Nonlocality tests of Bell Inequalities and of Hardy's "ladder theorem" without "supplementary assumptions"

We have experimentally tested the non local properties of the states generated by a high brilliance source of entanglement which virtually allows the direct measurement of the full set of photon pairs created by the basic QED process implied by the parametric quantum scattering. Standard Bell measurements and Bell's inequality violation test have been realized over the entire cone of emission of the degenerate pairs. By the same source we have verified the Hardy's ladder theory up to the 20th step and the contradiction between the standard quantum theory and the local realism has been tested for 41% of entangled pairs. Experimental realization of hyper-entangled two-photon states

We report on the the experimental realization of hyper-entangled two photon states, entangled in polarization and momentum. These states are produced by a high brilliance parametric source of entangled photon pairs with peculiar characteristics of flexibility in terms of state generation. The quality of the entanglement in the two degrees of freedom has been tested by multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry.

No Planet Around HD 219542 B

The star HD 219542 B has been reported by us (Desidera et al. 2003) to show low-amplitude radial velocity variations that could be due to the presence of a Saturn-mass planetary companion or to stellar activity phenomena. In this letter we present the results of the continuation of the radial velocity monitoring as well as a discussion of literature determinations of the chromospheric activity of the star (Wright et al. 2004). These new data indicate that the observed radial velocity variations are likely related to stellar activity. In particular, there are indications that HD 219542 B underwent a phase of enhanced stellar activity in 2002 while the activity level has been lower in both 2001 and 2003. Our 2003 radial velocity measurements now deviate from our preliminary orbital solution and the peak in the power spectrum at the proposed planet period is severely reduced by the inclusion of the new data. We therefore dismiss the planet hypothesis as the cause of the radial velocity variations.

Abundance differences between components of wide binaries

In this paper we present iron abundance analysis for 23 wide binaries with main sequence components in the temperture range 4900-6300 K, taken from the sample of the pairs currently included in the radial velocity planet search on going at the TNG. The use of a line-by-line differential analysis technique between the components of each pair allows to reach errors of about 0.02 dex in the iron content difference. Most of the pairs have abundance differences lower than 0.02 dex and there are no pairs with differences larger than 0.07 dex. The four cases of differences larger than 0.02 dex may be spouriuos because of the larger error bars affecting pairs with large temperature difference, cold stars and rotating stars. The pair HD 219542, previously reported by us to have different composition, results instead normal. For non-rotating stars warmer than 5500 K, we are able to exclude in most cases the ingestion of more than 1 Earth Mass of iron (about 5 Earth masses of meteoritic material) during the main sequence lifetime of the stars, placing more stringent limits (about 0.4 Earth masses of iron) in five cases of warm stars. This latter limit is similar to the estimates of rocky material accreted by the Sun during its main sequence lifetime. Combining the results of the present analysis with those for the Hyades and Pleiades, we conclude that the hypothesis that pollution by planetary material is the only responsible for the highest metallicity of the stars with planets may be rejected at more than 99% level of confidence if the incidence of planets in these samples is as high as 8% and similar to the field stars included in current radial velocity surveys. However, the significance of this result drops considerably if the incidence of planets around stars in binary systems and clusters is less than a half than around normal field stars.

Universal ultrabright source of entangled photon states: generation and tomographic analysis of Werner states and of Maximally Entangled Mixed States

A novel ultrabright parametric source of polarization entangled photon pairs with striking spatial characteristics is reported. The distribution of the output electromagnetic k-modes excited by Spontaneous Parametris Down Conversion and coupled to the output detectors can be very broad. It could coincide with the full set of phase-matched excited modes, at least in principle. In this case a relevant conditional quasi-pure output state should be realized. By these (approximate) states realized over a full Entanglement-Ring output distribution, the non local properties of the generated entanglement has been tested by standard Bell measurements and by Ou-Mandel interferometry. A novel ''mode-patchwork'' technique based on the quantum superposition principle is adopted to synthesize in a straightforward and reliable way any kind of mixed-states, of large conceptual and technological interest in modern Quantum Information. Tunable Werner states and Maximally Entangled Mixed States (MEMS) have indeed been created by the new technique and investigated by quantum tomography. A thorough study of the entropic and nonlocal properties of these states has been undertaken experimentally and theoretically, by a unifying variational approach.

Experimental Detection of Entanglement with Polarized Photons

We report on the first experimental realization of the entanglement witness for polarization entangled photons. It represents a recently discovered significant quantum information protocol which is based on few local measurements. The present demonstration has been applied to the so-called Werner states, a family of ''mixed'' quantum states that include both entangled and non entangled states. These states have been generated by a novel high brilliance source of entanglement which allows to continuously tune the degree of mixedness.

A search for planets in the metal-enriched binary HD 219542

The components of the wide binary HD 219542 were recently found to differ in metallicity by about 0.1 dex (Gratton et al. A&A 377, 123). In this paper, we present the results of 2 years of high precision radial velocity monitoring of these stars performed at the Telecopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) using the high resolution spectrograph SARG. No indication for radial velocity variations above the measurement errors (5 m/s) was found for the metal richer component A. This allows us to place upper mass-limits for planets around this star. HD 219542B instead shows a low amplitude variation with a 112 day period at a confidence level of about 96-97%. This might suggest the presence of a Saturn-mass planet, although it is still possible that these variations are due to moderate activity of the star. Tests based on variations of bisectors, stellar magnitude and line equivalent widths were inconclusive so far.

Violation of Bell inequalities and Quantum Tomography with Pure-states, Werner-states and Maximally Entangled Mixed States created by a Universal Quantum Entangler

Entangled pure-states, Werner-states and generalized mixed-states of any structure, spanning a 2x2 Hilbert space are created by a novel high-brilliance universal source of polarization-entangled photon pairs. The violation of a Bell inequality has been tested for the first time with a pure-state, indeed a conceptually relevant ideal condition, and with Werner-states. The generalized ''maximally entangled mixed states'' (MEMS) were also synthetized for the first time and their exotic properties investigated by means of a quantum tomographic technique.

Formation of terrestrial planets in close binary systems: the case of Alpha Centauri A

At present the possible existence of planets around the stars of a close binary system is still matter of debate. Can planetary bodies form in spite of the strong gravitational perturbations of the companion star? We study in this paper via numerical simulation the last stage of planetary formation, from embryos to terrestrial planets in the Alpha Cen system, the prototype of close binary systems. We find that Earth class planets can grow around Alpha Cen A on a time-scale of 50 Myr. In some of our numerical models the planets form directly in the habitable zone of the star in low eccentric orbits. In one simulation two of the final planets are in a 2:1 mean motion resonance that, however, becomes unstable after 200 Myr. During the formation process some planetary embryos fall into the stars possibly altering their metallicity.

Galactic orbits of stars with planets

We have reconstructed the galactic orbits of the parent stars of exoplanets. For comparison, we have recalculated the galactic orbits of stars from the Edvardsson et al.(1993) catalog. A comparison between the two samples indicates that stars with planets are not kinematically peculiar. At each perigalactic distance stars with planets have a metallicity systematically larger than the average for the comparison sample. We argue that this result favors scenarios where the presence of planets is the cause of the higher metallicity of stars with planets.
