Measurement and control of the interaction frequency shift in bosonic optical lattice clocks

We report precise measurements of inter-level interactions in a bosonic optical lattice clock based on $^{88}$Sr atoms. We observe a nonlinear density dependence of the clock shift, even without reaching quantum degeneracy. In a 2D lattice, the Rabi line shape exhibits an interaction sideband consistent with a collective spin model, while in a 1D lattice the shift is modified by density-induced dephasing. These findings, combined with a careful choice of interrogation detuning and atomic density, can enable operation at a net-zero systematic density shift in $^{88}$Sr lattice clocks. We discuss the implications of these findings in many-body physics, quantum simulation, and precision isotope shift measurements, which provide a powerful probe for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Analysis of spin-squeezing generation in cavity-coupled atomic ensembles with continuous measurements

We analyze the generation of spin-squeezed states via coupling of three-level atoms to an optical cavity and continuous quantum measurement of the transmitted cavity field in order to monitor the evolution of the atomic ensemble. Using analytical treatment and microscopic simulations of the dynamics, we show that one can achieve significant spin squeezing, favorably scaling with the number of atoms $N$. However, contrary to some previous literature, we clarify that it is not possible to obtain Heisenberg scaling without the continuous feedback that is proposed in optimal approaches. In fact, in the adiabatic cavity removal approximation and large $N$ limit, we find the scaling behavior $N^{-2/3}$ for spin squeezing and $N^{-1/3}$ for the corresponding protocol duration. These results can be obtained only by considering the curvature of the Bloch sphere, since linearizing the collective spin operators tangentially to its equator yields inaccurate predictions. With full simulations, we characterize how spin-squeezing generation depends on the system parameters and departs from the bad cavity regime, by gradually mixing with cavity-filling dynamics until metrological advantage is lost. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this spin-squeezing protocol to state-of-the-art optical clocks.

Observation of a Spinning Top in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Boundaries strongly affect the behavior of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a phenomenon particularly evident in elongated cigar-shaped traps where vortices tend to orient along a short direction to minimize energy. Remarkably, contributions to the angular momentum of these vortices are tightly confined to the region surrounding the core, in stark contrast to untrapped condensates where all atoms contribute $\hbar$. We develop a theoretical model and use this, in combination with numerical simulations, to show that such localized vortices precess in an analogous manner to that of a classical spinning top. We experimentally verify this spinning-top behavior with our real-time imaging technique that allows for the tracking of position and orientation of vortices as they dynamically evolve. Finally, we perform an in-depth numerical investigation of our real-time expansion and imaging method, with the aim of guiding future experimental implementation, as well as outlining directions for its improvement.
