Kinematic Emergence of the Page Curve in a Local Transverse-Field Ising Model

We present a controllable quantum spin-chain model that reproduces the Page curve (the rise-and-fall of bipartite entanglement expected in black-hole evaporation), using only local interactions and a kinematic reduction of the subsystem size. Two transverse-field Ising chains are coupled to form a pure bipartite state; Hawking-like evaporation is implemented by dynamically shrinking the 'system' chain and enlarging the 'environment' chain, while unitary real-time evolution is simulated with matrix product state (MPS) tensor networks. The characteristic Page curve profile emerges robustly under this controlled subsystem resizing and notably persists even when the explicit Hamiltonian coupling across the boundary is set to zero, demonstrating that shrinking Hilbert-space dimension alone can generate Page curve behaviour. We show that the detailed shape of the curve depends on the internal information dynamics: operation at criticality yields a smooth profile, whereas moving away from criticality distorts entanglement growth and decay. These results position locally interacting spin chains as a realistic platform for probing black-hole-inspired information dynamics on current quantum hardware.

Quantum Time: a novel resource for quantum information

Time in relativity theory has a status different from that adopted by standard quantum mechanics, where time is considered as a parameter measured with reference to an external absolute Newtonian frame. This status strongly restricts its role in the dynamics of systems and hinders any formulation to merge quantum mechanics with general relativity, specifically when considering quantum gravity. To overcome those limitations, several authors tried to construct an operator which is conjugate to the Hamiltonian of quantum systems implementing some essential features of the relativistic time. These formulations use the concept of internal or intrinsic time instead of the universal coordinate time used in textbooks. Furthermore, recently it is remarked that the consideration of time with relativistic features could enhance the analysis techniques in quantum information processing and have an impact on its status in causal orders and causal structures of quantum information. The role of clocks, their accuracy and stability has become an important issue in quantum information processing. This article present a substantiative review of recent works which reflect the possibility of utilizing quantum time, measured by quantum clock devised according to Page-Wootters scheme, to stand as a resource for quantum information processing.

Time and Quantum Clocks: a review of recent developments

In this review we present the problem of time in quantum physics, including a short history of the problem and the known objections about considering time a quantum observable. The need to deal with time as an observable is elaborated through some unresolved problems. The lack of a consistent theory of time is currently hindering the formulation of a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity. It is argued that the proposal set forth by several authors of considering an intrinsic measurement of quantum time, besides having the conventional external time, is compelling. Recently several suggestions have been put forward to revive the proposal of Page and Wootters (1983), elaborating and resolving some of the main ambiguities of the original proposal and opening new scope for understanding its content. The approach followed in these new contributions exposes the need to go beyond the limitations enforced by the conventional approach of quantum physics. The attitude of covariant loop quantum gravity, in which it is called to completely ignore time, is also discussed. This review could be a step forward in an endeavour to reform our outlook of the unification of the theory of relativity and quantum physics by furnishing the conceptual ground needed for this goal. Intentionally, some technical details are avoided since we aim to present the approaches to resolve the problem in a simple way with the clearest possible outlook. These can be looked up in the original references provided.

An intuitive picture of the Casimir effect

The Casimir effect, which predicts the emergence of an attractive force between two parallel, highly reflecting plates in vacuum, plays a vital role in various fields of physics, from quantum field theory and cosmology to nanophotonics and condensed matter physics. Nevertheless, Casimir forces still lack an intuitive explanation and current derivations rely on regularisation procedures to remove infinities. Starting from special relativity and treating space and time coordinates equivalently, this paper overcomes no-go theorems of quantum electrodynamics and obtains a local relativistic quantum description of the electromagnetic field in free space. When extended to cavities, our approach can be used to calculate Casimir forces directly in position space without the introduction of cut-off frequencies.
