Compilation of lessons learned from ESS cryomodule and benchmarking with projects in implementation phase

This document presents a deliverable of the project Innovate for Sustainable Accelerating Systems (iSAS), funded by the EU under its program HORIZON-INFRA-2023-TECH-01 via grant agreement n{\deg}101131435 (deliverable D16, WP5). It contains an analysis on elliptical cryomodules developed for the European Spallation Source (ESS) and a benchmark of high-beta cryomodules across six leading international facilities.

European Workshop on Photocathodes for Particle Accelerator Applications 2022: Summary Report

The European Workshop on Photocathodes for (particle) Accelerator Applications (EWPAA) brings together experts in the field of photocathode based electron sources for use in particle accelerators, with the aim of sharing their knowledge and latest research and development progress in this crucial field of particle accelerator science. The workshop is convened every other year, and is thus complementary to the P3 workshop (Photocathode Physics for Particle accelerators) run in the USA. Consequently, there is a workshop focusing on photocathodes for particle accelerator applications convened every year, either in Europe or the USA. The EWPAA 2022 is the 4th meeting in this workshop series. The event was hosted by the INFN LASA Institute in Milan in collaboration with University of Milano between September 20th and 22nd. The programme was organised with 7 working groups, with each oral contribution assigned to the most appropriate group. This report presents, summarised by the work group conveners, the innovative ideas, the challenges and the main points raised by each of the speakers.

Production of highly-polarized positrons using polarized electrons at MeV energies

The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized electron beam in a high-$Z$ target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/$c$, limited only by the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized positron beam physics to a wide community.

Virtual Compton Scattering and the Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton at Q^2=0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2

Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma). This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the determination of the structure functions P_LL-P_TT/epsilon and P_LT, and the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha_E(Q^2) and beta_M(Q^2) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2= 0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of the proton over the full measured Q^2-range, and point to their non-trivial behavior.

Status of the Super-B factory Design

The SuperB international team continues to optimize the design of an electron-positron collider, which will allow the enhanced study of the origins of flavor physics. The project combines the best features of a linear collider (high single-collision luminosity) and a storage-ring collider (high repetition rate), bringing together all accelerator physics aspects to make a very high luminosity of 10$^{36}$ cm$^{-2}$ sec$^{-1}$. This asymmetric-energy collider with a polarized electron beam will produce hundreds of millions of B-mesons at the $Υ$(4S) resonance. The present design is based on extremely low emittance beams colliding at a large Piwinski angle to allow very low $β_y^\star$ without the need for ultra short bunches. Use of crab-waist sextupoles will enhance the luminosity, suppressing dangerous resonances and allowing for a higher beam-beam parameter. The project has flexible beam parameters, improved dynamic aperture, and spin-rotators in the Low Energy Ring for longitudinal polarization of the electron beam at the Interaction Point. Optimized for best colliding-beam performance, the facility may also provide high-brightness photon beams for synchrotron radiation applications.

Error study of CERN Linac 4

LINAC 4 is a normal conducting H- structure proposed to intensify the proton flux currently available for the CERN accelerator chain. This linac is designed to accelerate a 65 mA beam up to 160 MeV to be injected into the CERN Proton Synchrotron Booster. The acceleration is performed up to 3 MeV by a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole resonating at 352 MHz followed by a serie of two drift tube systems (conventional Alvarez and Cell Coupled Drift Tube Linac) boosting the beam up to 90 MeV at 352 MHz and finished by a Side Coupled Linac at 704 MHz. Beam dynamics was studied and optimized performing end-to-end simulations. Robustness of this design was verified by modelling machine errors. This paper presents the results of this error study.

Statistical simulations of machine errors for LINAC4

LINAC 4 is a normal conducting H- linac proposed at CERN to provide a higher proton flux to the CERN accelerator chain. It should replace the existing LINAC 2 as injector to the Proton Synchrotron Booster and can also operate in the future as the front end of the SPL, a 3.5 GeV Superconductingg Proton Linac. LINAC 4 consists of a Radio-Frequency Quadrupole, a chopper line, a Drift Tube Linac (DTL) and a Cell Coupled DTL all operating at 352 MHz and finally a Side Coupled Linac at 704 MHz. Beam dynamics was studied and optimized performing end-to-end simulations. This paper presents statistical simulations of machine errors which were performed in order to validate the proposed design.

First electron beam polarization measurements with a Compton polarimeter at Jefferson Laboratory

A Compton polarimeter has been installed in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory. This letter reports on the first electron beam polarization measurements performed during the HAPPEX experiment at an electron energy of 3.3 GeV and an average current of 40 $μ$A. The heart of this device is a Fabry-Perot cavity which increased the luminosity for Compton scattering in the interaction region so much that a 1.4% statistical accuracy could be obtained within one hour, with a 3.3% total error.
