Nanofiber Fabry-Perot microresonator for non-linear optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics

We experimentally realize a Fabry-Perot-type optical microresonator near the cesium D2 line wavelength based on a tapered optical fiber, equipped with two fiber Bragg gratings which enclose a sub-wavelength diameter waist. Owing to the very low taper losses, the finesse of the resonator reaches F = 86 while the on-resonance transmission is T = 11 %. The characteristics of our resonator fulfill the requirements of non-linear optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics in the strong coupling regime. In combination with its demonstrated ease of use and its advantageous mode geometry, it thus opens a realm of applications.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Micro Vertex Detector

This document illustrates the technical layout and the expected performance of the Micro Vertex Detector (MVD) of the PANDA experiment. The MVD will detect charged particles as close as possible to the interaction zone. Design criteria and the optimisation process as well as the technical solutions chosen are discussed and the results of this process are subjected to extensive Monte Carlo physics studies. The route towards realisation of the detector is outlined.

Surface reconstruction and energy gap of superconducting V3Si(001)

A yet unknown surface reconstruction of V3Si(001), which is most likely induced by carbon, is used to investigate the quasi-particle energy gap at the atomic scale by a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope. The width of the gap was virtually not altered at and close to carbon impurities, nor did it change at different sites of the reconstructed surface lattice. A remarkable modification of the spectroscopic signature of the gap was induced, however, upon moving the tip of the microscope into controlled contact with the superconductor. Spectroscopy of the resulting normal-metal -- superconductor junction indicated the presence of Andreev reflections.

Neutron Beam Effects on Spin Exchange Polarized He-3

We have observed depolarization effects when high intensity cold neutron beams are incident on alkali-metal-spin-exchange polarized He-3 cells used as neutron spin filters. This was first observed as a reduction of the maximum attainable He-3 polarization and was attributed to a decrease of alkali-metal polarization, which led us to directly measure alkali-metal polarization and spin relaxation over a range of neutron fluxes at LANSCE and ILL. The data reveal a new alkali-metal spin-relaxation mechanism that approximately scales as the square root of the neutron capture-flux density incident on the cell. This is consistent with an effect proportional to the recombination-limited ion concentration, but is much larger than expected from earlier work.

A MaxBCG Catalog of 13,823 Galaxy Clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We present a catalog of galaxy clusters selected using the maxBCG redsequence method from Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometric data. This catalog includes 13,823 clusters with velocity dispersions greater than 400 km/s, and is the largest galaxy cluster catalog assembled to date. They are selected in an approximately volume-limited way from a 0.5 Gpc^3 region covering 7500 square degrees of sky between redshifts 0.1 and 0.3. (ABRIGDED)

Lifetimes of electrons in the Shockley surface state band of Ag(111)

We present a theoretical many-body analysis of the electron-electron (e-e) inelastic damping rate $Γ$ of electron-like excitations in the Shockley surface state band of Ag(111). It takes into account ab-initio band structures for both bulk and surface states. $Γ$ is found to increase more rapidly as a function of surface state energy E than previously reported, thus leading to an improved agreement with experimental data.

Theoretical analysis of STM-derived lifetimes of excitations in the Shockley surface state band of Ag(111)

We present a quantitative many-body analysis using the GW approximation of the decay rate $Γ$ due to electron-electron scattering of excitations in the Shockley surface state band of Ag(111), as measured using the scanning tunnelling microscope (STM). The calculations include the perturbing influence of the STM, which causes a Stark-shift of the surface state energy $E$ and concomitant increase in $Γ$. We find $Γ$ varies more rapidly with $E$ than recently found for image potential states, where the STM has been shown to significantly affect measured lifetimes. For the Shockley states, the Stark-shifts that occur under normal tunnelling conditions are relatively small and previous STM-derived lifetimes need not be corrected.

Dimension-Dependence of the Critical Exponent in Spherically Symmetric Gravitational Collapse

We study the critical behaviour of spherically symmetric scalar field collapse to black holes in spacetime dimensions other than four. We obtain reliable values for the scaling exponent in the supercritical region for dimensions in the range $3.5\leq D\leq 14$. The critical exponent increases monotonically to an asymptotic value at large $D$ of $γ\sim0.466$. The data is well fit by a simple exponential of the form: $γ\sim 0.466(1-e^{-0.408 D})$.

Higher Order Graviton Scattering in M(atrix) Theory

In matrix theory the effective action for graviton-graviton scattering is a double expansion in the relative velocity and inverse separation. We discuss the systematics of this expansion and subject matrix theory to a new test. Low energy supergravity predicts the coefficient of the $v^6/r^{14}$ term, a two-loop effect, in agreement with explicit matrix model calculation.

An Information Extraction Core System for Real World German Text Processing

This paper describes SMES, an information extraction core system for real world German text processing. The basic design criterion of the system is of providing a set of basic powerful, robust, and efficient natural language components and generic linguistic knowledge sources which can easily be customized for processing different tasks in a flexible manner.

Supersymmetric Cycles in Exceptional Holonomy Manifolds and Calabi-Yau 4-Folds

We derive in the SCFT and low energy effective action frameworks the necessary and sufficient conditions for supersymmetric cycles in exceptional holonomy manifolds and Calabi-Yau 4-folds. We show that the Cayley cycles in $Spin(7)$ holonomy eight-manifolds and the associative and coassociative cycles in $G_2$ holonomy seven-manifolds preserve half of the space-time supersymmetry. We find that while the holomorphic and special Lagrangian cycles in Calabi-Yau 4-folds preserve half of the space-time supersymmetry, the Cayley submanifolds are novel as they preserve only one quarter of it. We present some simple examples. Finally, we discuss the implications of these supersymmetric cycles on mirror symmetry in higher dimensions.

Interactions in the SL(2,R)/U(1) Black Hole Background

We calculate two- and three-point tachyon amplitudes of the SL(2,R)/U(1) two-dimensional Euclidean black hole for spherical topologies in the continuum approach proposed by Bershadsky and Kutasov. We find an interesting relation to the tachyon scattering amplitudes of standard non-critical string theory.

Nonperturbative Solution of the Super-Virasoro Constraints

We present the solution of the discrete super-Virasoro constraints to all orders of the genus expansion. Integrating over the fermionic variables we get a representation of the partition function in terms of the one-matrix model. We also obtain the nonperturbative solution of the super-Virasoro constraints in the double scaling limit but do not find agreement between our flows and the known supersymmetric extensions of KdV.

Double Scaling Limit of the Supervirasoro Constraints

This paper supersedes the preprint Superloop Equations in the Double Scaling Limit, CERN-TH-6575. It is an improved version with corrections in the derivation of the continuum limit, a clarification of the doubling of degrees of freedom for even potentials, and with a heuristic argument showing that the part of the free energy independent of fermion couplings in our model satisfies the KdV Hierarchy.
