Third-order non-Coulomb correction to the S-wave quarkonium wave functions at the origin

We compute the third-order correction to the S-wave quarkonium wave functions |ψ_n(0)|^2 at the origin from non-Coulomb potentials in the effective non-relativistic Lagrangian. Together with previous results on the Coulomb correction and the ultrasoft correction computed in a companion paper, this completes the third-order calculation up to a few unknown matching coefficients. Numerical estimates of the new correction for bottomonium and toponium are given.

NNNLO results on top-quark pair production near threshold

We present new results on the NNNLO top-antitop production cross section near threshold from potential and ultrasoft gluon corrections. The new non-logarithmic third-order terms are in the 10% range and lead to a significant reduction in the theoretical error.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

Ultrasoft contribution to quarkonium production and annihilation

We compute the third-order correction to electromagnetic S-wave quarkonium production and annihilation rates due to the emission and absorption of an ultrasoft gluon. Our result completes the analysis of the non-relativistic quarkonium bound-state dynamics in the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. The impact of the ultrasoft correction on the Upsilon(1S) leptonic width and the top quark-antiquark threshold production cross section is estimated.

Third-order Coulomb corrections to the S-wave Green function, energy levels and wave functions at the origin

We obtain analytic expressions for the third-order corrections due to the strong interaction Coulomb potential to the S-wave Green function, energy levels and wave functions at the origin for arbitrary principal quantum number n. Together with the known non-Coulomb correction this results in the complete spectrum of S-states up to order alpha_s^5. The numerical impact of these corrections on the Upsilon spectrum and the top quark pair production cross section near threshold is estimated.

Hadronic B decays

I briefly summarize the factorization approach to hadronic B decays emphasizing theoretical results that have become available recently. The discussion of its application to data is abridged, and only the determination of gamma=(71\pm 5) degrees from time-dependent CP asymmetries is included in some detail.

Spectator scattering at NLO in non-leptonic B decays: Tree amplitudes

We compute the 1-loop (alpha_s^2) correction to hard spectator scattering in non-leptonic B decay tree amplitudes. This forms part of the NNLO contribution to the QCD factorization formula for hadronic B decays, and introduces a new rescattering phase that corrects the leading-order result for direct CP asymmetries. Among the technical issues, we discuss the cancellation of infrared divergences, and the treatment of evanescent four-quark operators. The infrared finiteness of our result establishes factorization of spectator scattering at the 1-loop order. Depending on the values of hadronic input parameters, the new 1-loop correction may have a significant impact on tree-dominated decays such as B -> pi pi.

Enhanced electroweak penguin amplitude in B-->VV decays

We discuss a novel electromagnetic penguin contribution to the transverse helicity amplitudes in B decays to two vector mesons, which is enhanced by two powers of mB/Lambda relative to the standard penguin amplitudes. This leads to unique polarization signatures in penguin-dominated decay modes such as B-->rho K* similar to polarization effects in the radiative decay B-->K*gamma, and offers new opportunities to probe the magnitude and chirality of flavour-changing neutral current couplings to photons.

Heavy-to-light B meson form factors at large recoil energy -- spectator-scattering corrections

We complete the investigation of loop corrections to hard spectator-scattering in exclusive B meson to light meson transitions by computing the short-distance coefficient (jet-function) from the hard-collinear scale. Adding together the two coefficients from matching QCD to SCET_I to SCET_II, we investigate the size of loop effects on the ratios of heavy-to-light meson form factors at large recoil. We find the corrections from the hard and hard-collinear scales to be of approximately the same size, and significant, but the perturbative expansions appear to be well-behaved. Our calculation provides a non-trivial verification of the factorization arguments. We observe considerable differences between the predictions based on factorization in the heavy-quark limit and current QCD sum rule calculations of the form factors. We also include the hard-collinear correction in the B -> pi pi tree amplitudes, and find an enhancement of the colour-suppressed amplitude relative to the colour-allowed amplitude.

Power corrections to B\to X_u l ν(X_sγ) decay spectra in the "shape-function" region

Using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), we examine the 1/m_b corrections to the factorization formulas for inclusive semi-leptonic B decays in the endpoint region, where the hadronic final state consists of a single jet. At tree level, we find a new contribution from four-quark operators that was previously assumed absent. Beyond tree level many sub-leading shape-functions are needed to correctly describe the decay process.

Exclusive radiative and electroweak b->d and b->s penguin decays at NLO

We provide Standard Model expectations for the rare radiative decays B->K^* gamma, B->rho gamma and B-> omega gamma, and the electroweak penguin decays B->K^* l^+ l^- and B->rho l^+ l^- at the next-to-leading order (NLO), extending our previous results to b->d transitions. We consider branching fractions, isospin asymmetries and direct CP asymmetries. For the electroweak penguin decays, the lepton-invariant mass spectrum and forward-backward asymmetry is also included. Radiative and electroweak penguin transitions in b->d are mainly interesting in the search for new flavour-changing neutral current interactions, but in addition the B->rho gamma decays provide constraints on the CKM parameters (\barρ,\barη). The potential impact of these constraints is discussed.

Comment on ``B->M_1 M_2: Factorization, charming penguins, strong phases, and polarization''

We show that the factorization formula for non-leptonic B decays to two light flavor non-singlet mesons derived by Bauer et al. in the context of soft-collinear effective theory is equivalent to the corresponding formula in the QCD factorization approach. The apparent numerical differences in the analysis of B->pi+pi data performed by these authors, as compared to previous QCD factorization analyses, can largely be attributed to the neglect of known perturbative and power corrections.

Towards pair production near threshold with unstable particle effective theory

We illustrate the use of effective theory techniques to describe processes involving unstable particles close to resonance. First, we present the main ideas in the context of a scalar resonance in an Abelian gauge-Yukawa model. We then outline the necessary modifications to describe W-pair production close to threshold in electron-positron collisions.

Loop corrections to sub-leading heavy quark currents in SCET

We compute the one-loop (hard) matching correction to heavy-to-light transition currents in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) to sub-leading power in the SCET expansion parameter for an arbitrary Dirac structure of the QCD weak current.

Effective theory calculation of resonant high-energy scattering

Tests of the standard model and its hypothetical extensions require precise theoretical predictions for processes involving massive, unstable particles. It is well-known that ordinary weak-coupling perturbation theory breaks down due to intermediate singular propagators. Various pragmatic approaches have been developed to deal with this difficulty. In this paper we construct an effective field theory for resonant processes utilizing the hierarchy of scales between the mass of the unstable particle, M, and its width, Gamma. The effective theory allows calculations to be systematically arranged into a series in g^2 and Gamma/M, and preserves gauge invariance in every step. We demonstrate the applicability of this method by calculating explicitly the inclusive line shape of a scalar resonance in an abelian gauge-Yukawa model at next-to-leading order in Gamma/M and the weak couplings. We also discuss the extension to next-to-next-to-leading order and compute an interesting subset of these corrections.
