Strong Gravitational Lensing by the Super-massive cD Galaxy in Abell 3827

We have discovered strong gravitational lensing features in the core of the nearby cluster Abell 3827 by analyzing Gemini South GMOS images. The most prominent strong lensing feature is a highly-magnified, ring-shaped configuration of four images around the central cD galaxy. GMOS spectroscopic analysis puts this source at z~0.2. Located ~20" away from the central galaxy is a secondary tangential arc feature which has been identified as a background galaxy with z~0.4. We have modeled the gravitational potential of the cluster core, taking into account the mass from the cluster, the BCG and other galaxies. We derive a total mass of (2.7 +- 0.4) x 10^13 Msun within 37 h^-1 kpc. This mass is an order of magnitude larger than that derived from X-ray observations. The total mass derived from lensing data suggests that the BCG in this cluster is perhaps the most massive galaxy in the nearby Universe.

GEMINI 3D spectroscopy of BAL+IR+Fe II QSOs: II. IRAS 04505-2958 an explosive QSO with hypershell and a new scenario for galaxy formation and galaxy end

From a study of BAL + IR + Fe II QSOs (using deep Gemini GMOS-IFU spectroscopy) new results are presented: for IRAS 04505-2958. Specifically, we have studied in detail the out flow (OF) process and their associated structures, mainly at two large galactic scales: (i) two blobs/shells (S1, S2) at radius r = 1.1 and 2.2 kpc; and (ii) an external hypergiant shell (S3) at r = 11 kpc. In addition, the presence of two very extended hypergiant shells (S4, S5) at r = 80 kpc is discussed. From this GMOS study the following main results were obtained: (i) For the external hypergiant shell S3 the kinematics GMOS maps of the ionized gas show very similar features to those observed for the prototype of exploding external supergiant shell: in NGC 5514. (ii) The main knots K1, K2 and K3 -of this hypergiant shell S3- show a stellar population and emission line ratios associated with the presence of a starburst + OF/shocks. (iii) The internal shells S1 and S2 show structures, OF components and properties very similar to those detected in the nuclear shells of Mrk 231. (iv) The shells S1+S2 and S3 are aligned at PA = 131: i.e. suggesting that the OF process is in the blow-out phase with bipolar structure. In addition, the shells S4 and S5 (at 80-100 kpc scale) are aligned at PA = 40, i.e.: a bipolar OF perpendicular to the internal OF. Finally, the generation of UHE cosmic rays and neutrino/ dark-matter -associated with HyNe in BAL + IR + Fe II QSOs- is discussed.

Scattered-Light Echoes from the Historical Galactic Supernovae Cassiopeia A and Tycho (SN 1572)

We report the discovery of an extensive system of scattered light echo arclets associated with the recent supernovae in the local neighbourhood of the Milky Way: Tycho (SN 1572) and Cassiopeia A. Existing work suggests that the Tycho SN was a thermonuclear explosion while the Cas A supernova was a core collapse explosion. Precise classifications according to modern nomenclature require spectra of the outburst light. In the case of ancient SNe, this can only be done with spectroscopy of their light echo, where the discovery of the light echoes from the outburst light is the first step. Adjacent light echo positions suggest that Cas A and Tycho may share common scattering dust structures. If so, it is possible to measure precise distances between historical Galactic supernovae. On-going surveys that alert on the development of bright scattered-light echo features have the potential to reveal detailed spectroscopic information for many recent Galactic supernovae, both directly visible and obscured by dust in the Galactic plane.

Gemini GMOS IFU Spectroscopy of IRAS 04505-2958: A New Exploding BAL + IR + Fe II QSO

New results of a Programme of study of BAL + IR + Fe II QSOs (at low and high redshift) are presented. Which are based mainly on deep Gemini GMOS integral field unit (IFU/3D) spectroscopy. We have performed a detailed study of the kinematics, morphological, and physical conditions, in the BAL + IR + Fe II QSO: IRAS 04505-2958. From this study, some selected results are presented, mainly for the 3 expanding giant shells (observed with Gemini). In particular, the GMOS data suggest that the outflow (OF) process -in this IR QSO- generated multiple expanding hypergiant shells (from 10, to 100 kpc), in several extreme explosive events. These new Gemini GMOS data are in good agreement with our evolutionary, explosive and composite Model: where part of the ISM of the host galaxy is ejected in the form of multiple giant shells, mainly by HyN explosions. This process could generate satellite/companion galaxies, and even could expel a high fraction -or all- the host galaxy. In addition, this Model for AGN could give important clue about the physical processes that could explain the origin -in AGNs- of very energetic cosmic rays, detected by the P. Auger Observatory.

Spectral Identification of an Ancient Supernova using Light Echoes in the LMC

We report the successful identification of the type of the supernova responsible for the supernova remnant SNR 0509-675 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using Gemini spectra of surrounding light echoes. The ability to classify outbursts associated with centuries-old remnants provides a new window into several aspects of supernova research and is likely to be successful in providing new constraints on additional LMC supernovae as well as their historical counterparts in the Milky Way Galaxy (MWG). The combined spectrum of echo light from SNR 0509-675 shows broad emission and absorption lines consistent with a supernova (SN) spectrum. We create a spectral library consisting of 26 SNe Ia and 6 SN Ib/c that are time-integrated, dust-scattered by LMC dust, and reddened by the LMC and MWG. We fit these SN templates to the observed light echo spectrum using $χ^2$ minimization as well as correlation techniques, and we find that overluminous 91T-like SNe Ia with $\dm15<0.9$ match the observed spectrum best.

Deep GEMINI GMOS-IFU spectroscopy of BAL QSOs: I. Decoupling the BAL, QSO, starburst, NLR, supergiant bubbles and galactic wind in Mrk 231

In this work we present the first results of a study of BAL QSOs (at low and high redshift), based on very deep Gemini GMOS integral field spectroscopy. In particular, the results obtained for the nearest BAL IR QSO Mrk 231 are presented. Very deep three-dimensional spectra and maps clearly show that the BAL systems I and II are extended (reaching 1.4-1.6" = 1.2-1.3 kpc, from the nucleus) and clearly elongated at the position angle close to the radio jet PA. Which suggest that the BAL systems I and II are both associated with the radio jet, and supporting the bipolar jet-wind model for some BALs. For the nuclear region of Mrk 231, the QSO and host-galaxy components were modelled, using a new technique of decoupling 3D spectra. From this study, the following main results were found: (i) in the pure host galaxy spectrum an extreme nuclear starburst component was clearly observed, mainly as a very strong increase in the flux, at the blue wavelengths; (ii) the BAL system I is observed in the spectrum of the host galaxy; (iii) in the clean/pure QSO emission spectrum, only broad lines were detected. 3D GMOS individual spectra (specially in the IR Ca II triplet) and maps confirm the presence of an extreme and young nuclear starburst (8 < age < 15 Myr), which was detected mainly in a ring or toroid with a radius r = 0.3" = 200 pc, around the very nucleus. The physical properties of the four expanding nuclear bubbles were analysed, using the GMOS 3D spectra and maps. These results suggest that an important part of the nuclear NLR is generated by the OF process and the associated low velocity ionizing shocks.

Echoes from Ancient Supernovae in the Large Magellanic Cloud

In principle, the light from historical supernovae could still be visible as scattered-light echoes even centuries later. However, while echoes have been discovered around some nearby extragalactic supernovae well after the explosion, targeted searches have not recovered any echoes in the regions of historical Galactic supernovae. The discovery of echoes can allow us to pinpoint the supernova event both in position and age and, most importantly, allow us to acquire spectra of the echo light to type the supernova centuries after the direct light from the explosion first reached the Earth. Here we report on the discovery of three faint new variable surface brightness complexes with high apparent proper motion pointing back to well-defined positions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). These positions correspond to three of the six smallest (and likely youngest) previously catalogued supernova remnants, and are believed to be due to thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae. Using the distance and proper motions of these echo arcs, we estimate ages of 610 and 410 yr for the echoes #2 and #3.

IR mergers and IR QSOs with galactic winds. III. Mrk 231: composite outflow with multiple expanding bubbles and BALs (an exploding young QSO?)

A study of outflow (OF) and BAL systems in Mrk 231 (and in similar IR QSOs) is presented. This study is based mainly on 1D and 2D spectroscopy (obtained at La Palma/WHT, HST, IUE, ESO/NTT, KPNO, APO and CASLEO observatories) plus HST images. For Mrk 231 we report evidence that the extreme nuclear OF process has at least 3 main components, which are probably associated with: (i) the radio jet, at pc scale, and (ii(the extreme starburst at pc and kpc scale. This OF has generate 4 or more concentric expanding bubbles and the BAL systems. The variability of the short lived BAL-III system was studied. Finally, the IR colour diagram and the UV BAL system of IR+OF+FeII QSOs are analysed. We propose that the phase of young QSO is associated with:accretion of large amount of gas (by the SMBH)+extreme starburst+extreme composite OFs/BALs.

Large-order trend of the anomalous-dimensions spectrum of trilinear twist-3 quark operators

The anomalous dimensions of trilinear-quark operators are calculated at leading twist $t=3$ by diagonalizing the one-gluon exchange kernel of the renormalization-group type evolution equation for the nucleon distribution amplitude. This is done within a symmetrized basis of Appell polynomials of maximum degree $M$ for $M\gg 1$ (up to order 400) by combining analytical and numerical algorithms. The calculated anomalous dimensions form a degenerate system, whose upper envelope shows asymptotically logarithmic behavior.

Intrinsic Transverse Size Effect

Two recently proposed concepts to improve the perturbative calculation of exclusive amplitudes, gluonic radiative corrections (Sudakov factor) and confinement size effects (intrinsic transverse momentum) are combined to study the neutron magnetic form factor in the space-like region. We find that nucleon distribution amplitudes modelled on the basis of current QCD sum rules indicate overlap with the existing data at the highest measured values of momentum transfer. However, sizeable higher-order perturbative corrections (K-factor) and/or higher-twist contributions cannot be excluded, although they may be weaker than in the proton case.

A Critical Analysis of the Proton Form Factor with Sudakov Suppression and Intrinsic Transverse Momentum

The behavior of the proton magnetic form factor is studied within the modified hard scattering picture, which takes into account gluonic radiative corrections in terms of transverse separations. We parallel the analysis given previously by Li and make apparent a number of serious objections. The appropriate cut-off needed to render the form-factor calculation finite is both detailed and analyzed by considering different cut-off prescriptions. The use of the maximum interquark separation as a common infrared cut-off in the Sudakov suppression factor is proposed, since it avoids difficulties with the $α_{s}$-singularities and yields a proton form factor insensitive to the inclusion of the soft region which therefore can be confidently attributed to perturbative QCD. Results are presented for a variety of proton wave functions including also their intrinsic transverse momentum. It turns out that the perturbative contribution, although theoretically self-consistent for $Q^{2}$ larger than about $6$~GeV${}^{2}$ to $10$~GeV${}^{2}$, is too small compared to the data.

Evolution Effects on the Nucleon Distribution Amplitude

We study the Brodsky-Lepage evolution equation for the nucleon and construct an eigenfunction basis by including contributions of up to polynomial order $9$. By exployting the permutation symmetry $P_{13}$ of these eigenfunctions, a basis of symmetrized Appell polynomials can be constructed in which the diagonalization of the evolution kernel is considerably simplified. The anomalous dimensions are calculated and found to follow a power-law behavior. As an application, we consider the Brodsky-Huang-Lepage ansatz. An algorithm is developed to properly incorporate such higher order contributions in a systematic way.

Heterotic Approach to the Nucleon Distribution Amplitude

We give an in-depth analysis of the determination procedure of the recently proposed heterotic nucleon distribution amplitude which hybridizes the best features of the Chernyak-Ogloblin-Zhitnitsky and the Gari-Stefanis models. With respect to the QCD sum-rule constraints, optimized versions of these amplitudes are derived in terms of which a "hybridity" angle can be introduced to systematically classify all models.

On Proton and Delta Wave Functions

Physical wave functions for the nucleon and the $Δ^{+}$ isobar are presented, which unify the best features of previous models. With these wave functions we can calculate elastic form factors and the decays of the charmonium levels ${}^{3}S_{1}$, ${}^{3}P_{1}$, ${}^{3}P_{2}$ into $p\bar p$ in agreement with the data. A striking scaling behavior between $R=|G_{\text{M}}^{\text{n}}|/G_{\text{M}}^{\text{p}}$ and the coefficient $B_{4}$ of the Appell polynomial decomposition of the nucleon distribution amplitude is found; the implications for elastic nucleon cross sections are discussed.

Analysis of $Δ^{+}(1232)$ Isobar Observables, with Improved Quark Distribution Amplitudes

A model distribution amplitude for the $Δ^{+}(1232)$ isobar is proposed, derived on the basis of the QCD sum-rule calculations of Farrar et al. combined with those of Carlson and Poor. The transition form factor $γpΔ^{+}$ is calculated modeling the proton by selected distribution amplitudes. Furthermore, predictions are made for some exclusive charmonium decays into $Δ\barΔ$. The obtained results are compared with other theoretical models and with the available data.
