Lambda and Lambda-bar polarization in polarized DIS

We consider the polarization of Lambda + Lambda-bar baryons produced in polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering at leading order, with various spin configurations: longitudinally polarized leptons and unpolarized nucleon; unpolarized leptons and longitudinally or transversely polarized nucleons; longitudinally polarized leptons and nucleons. We show how the different results in the different cases are related to different aspects of the elementary dynamics and to the spin properties of the distribution and fragmentation functions and show how a combined analysis might give useful information. We give numerical results according to several sets of polarized fragmentation functions recently proposed.

Perspectives in Polarized Leptoproduction

We discuss specific observables that can be measured in deep inelastic leptoproduction in the case of 1-particle inclusive measurements, namely azimuthal asymmetries and power-suppressed (higher twist) corrections. These quantities contain information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of partons, with close connection to the gluon dynamics in hadrons.

Single transverse spin asymmetries for semi-inclusive pion production in DIS

We present a phenomenological approach to the description of single transverse spin asymmetries (STSA) in inclusive hadron production. It generalizes the pQCD formalism for high energies and large p_T inclusive hadron production processes, A+B -> C+X, by incorporating quark intrinsic motion in the spin dependent quark distribution and fragmentation functions. We concentrate here on spin and k_T effects in the fragmentation process of a polarized quark into the observed hadron, and give predictions for STSA in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, l + p -> pion + X and gamma^* + p -> pion + X.

Predictions for single spin asymmetries in lepton + p(transv. polarized) -> pion + X and gamma^* + p(transv. polarized) -> pion + X

Predictions for the single transverse spin asymmetry A_N in semi-inclusive DIS processes are given; non negligible values of A_N may arise from spin effects in the fragmentation of a polarized quark into a final hadron with a transverse momentum k_T with respect to the jet axis, the so-called Collins effect. The elementary single spin asymmetry of the fragmenting quark has been fixed in a previous paper, by fitting data on p(transv. polarized) + P -> pion + X, and the predictions given here are uniquely based on the assumption that the Collins effect is the only cause of the observed single spin asymmetries in p(transv. polarized) + p -> pion + X. Eventual spin and k_T dependences in quark distribution functions, the so-called Sivers effect, are also discussed.

Estimates of T-odd distribution and fragmentation functions

Estimates of the T-odd fragmentation and distribution functions, $H_1^\perp$ and $f_{1T}^{\perp}$, are presented. Our evaluations are based on a fit on experimental data of polarized proton-proton scattering. We use our estimates to make predictions for electron polarized-proton azimuthal asymmetries.

Single transverse spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production

A consistent phenomenological approach to the computation of transverse single spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production is presented, based on the assumed generalization of the QCD factorization theorem to the case in which quark intrinsic motion is taken into account. New k_T and spin dependent quark distribution and fragmentation functions are considered: some of them are fixed by fitting data on p(transv. polarized) + p -> pion + X and predictions are given for single spin asymmetries in l + p(transv. polarized) -> pion + X and gamma^* + p(transv. polarized) -> pion + X processes.

Time-reversal odd fragmentation and distribution functions in pp and ep single spin asymmetries

We present some estimates of T-odd fragmentation and distribution functions, $H_1^\perp$ and $f_{1T}^{\perp}$, evaluated on the basis of a fit on experimental data in p$^\uparrow$p. Assuming the T-odd fragmentation function to be responsible for the single spin asymmetry in pion production in p$^\uparrow$p, we find the ratio $H_1^{\perp}/D_1$ to be in good agreement with the experimental results from DELPHI data on Z -> 2$-jet decay. We use our estimates to make predictions for ep$^\uparrow$.

Determination of Radiative Widths of Scalar Mesons from Experimental Results on $γγ\toππ$

The scalar mesons in the 1 GeV region constitute the Higgs sector of the strong interactions. They are responsible for the masses of all light flavour hadrons. However, the composition of these scalar states is far from clear, despite decades of experimental effort. The two photon couplings of the $f_{0}$'s are a guide to their structure. Two photon results from Mark II, Crystal Ball and CELLO prompt a new Amplitude Analysis of $γγ\toπ^+π^-$, $π^0π^0$ cross-sections. Despite their currently limited angular coverage and lack of polarized photons, we use a methodology that provides the nearest one can presently achieve to a model-independent partial wave separation. We find two distinct classes of solutions. Both have very similar two photon couplings for the $f_0(980)$ and $f_0(400-1200)$. Hopefully these definitive results will be a spur to dynamical calculations that will bring us a better understanding of these important states.

Single spin asymmetries in polarized proton-proton, polarized antiproton-proton inclusive processes

Single spin asymmetries in polarized proton(antiproton) + proton -> pion + X have been measured to be large. They can be understood within perturbative QCD by introducing new k_perp and spin dependences in fragmentation and/or distribution functions. We discuss first how these effects in distribution functions alone can account for existing data and predict single spin asymmetries in other processes; then we see how similar effects in fragmentation functions alone can fit the existing data; finally we devise strategies to discriminate between the two contributions

Unquenching the scalar glueball

Computations in the quenched approximation on the lattice predict the lightest glueball to be a scalar in the 1.5-1.8 GeV region. Here we calculate the dynamical effect the coupling to two pseudoscalars has on the mass, width and decay pattern of such a scalar glueball. These hadronic interactions allow mixing with the $q \overline q$ scalar nonet, which is largely fixed by the well-established K_0^*(1430). This non-perturbative mixing means that, if the pure gluestate has a width to two pseudoscalar channels of ~100 MeV as predicted on the lattice, the resulting hadron has a width to these channels of only ~30 MeV with a large eta-eta component. Experimental results need to be reanalyzed in the light of these predictions to decide if either the f_0(1500) or an f_0(1710) coincides with this dressed glueball.

Which scalar meson is the glue-state ?

Preliminary results of a work in collaboration with M.R. Pennington are presented. Extending a scheme introduced by Tornqvist, we investigate a dynamical model in which the spectrum of scalar mesons can be derived, with the aim of locating the lightest glue-state. Adding hadronic interaction contributions to the bare propagator, to `dress' the bare quark-model $q \overline q$ states, we are able to write the amplitudes and the phase shifts in the approximation in which scalar resonances decay only into two pseudoscalar channels. The fit of these quantities to experimental data gives a satisfactory understanding of how hadronic interactions modify the underlying `bare' spectrum. In particular, we examine the case in which a glue-state is introduced into the model.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Inclusive Hadron Production

We consider a general formalism, previously developed to describe single spin asymmetries (SSA) in inclusive particle production at moderately large $p_T$ in hadron-hadron high-energy processes. In this approach SSA can originate from non perturbative, universal, quark distribution analyzing powers, provided the quark intrinsic motion is taken into account. A fit of the available data on $p^\uparrow p \to πX$ fixes simplified phenomenological expressions of these quark analyzing powers for the dominant (at large $x_F$) $u$ and $d$ quark contributions. We use the results of the fit as input to provide a possible scenario for SSA in a number of interesting processes (e.g. $p p \to γX$, $p p \to K X$) for which experimental results are or will soon be available.

Spin Measurements in lp -> hX Deep Inelastic Scattering

The production of hadrons in polarized lepton-nucleon deep inelastic scattering is discussed. The helicity density matrix of the hadron is computed within the QCD hard scattering formalism and its elements are shown to yield information on the spin structure of the nucleon and the spin dependence of the quark fragmentation process. The case of $ρ$ vector mesons is considered in more detail and estimates are given.

Chiral poles and zeros and the role of the left hand cut

It has been recently claimed that the Inverse Amplitude Method provides a reliable unitarisation of Chiral Perturbation Theory allowing resonance poles to be accurately uncovered. We illustrate the sensitivity of these claims to the treatment of the Adler zero and to assumptions about the left hand cut (and hence about the underlying exchange forces). Previously favoured methods are shown to mistreat the Adler zeros and violate crossing symmetry casting doubt on the precision of their phenomenology. A more reliable solution is proposed.

Polarized inclusive leptoproduction, $\ell N \to hX$, and the hadron helicity density matrix, $ρ(h)$: possible measurements and predictions

We discuss the production of hadrons in polarized lepton nucleon interactions and in the current jet fragmentation region; using the QCD hard scattering formalism we compute the helicity density matrix of the hadron and show how its elements, when measurable, can give information on the spin structure of the nucleon and the spin dependence of the quark fragmentation process. The cases of $ρ$ vector mesons and $Λ$ baryons are considered in more details and, within simplifying assumptions, some estimates are given.
