Electronic correlations in double ionization of atoms in pump-probe experiments

The ionization dynamics of a two-electron atom in an attosecond XUV-infrared pump-probe experiment is simulated by solving the time-dependent two-electron Schrödinger equation. A dramatic change of the double ionization (DI) yield with variation of the pump-probe delay is reported and the governing role of electron-electron correlations is shown. The results allow for a direct control of the DI yield and of the relative strength of double and single ionization.

Fluid Modes of a Spherically Confined Yukawa Plasma

The normal modes of a three-dimensional Yukawa plasma in an isotropic, harmonic confinement are investigated by solving the linearized cold fluid equations. The eigenmodes are found analytically and expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. It is found that the mode frequencies solely depend on the dimensionless plasma parameter $ξ=κR$, where $R$ is the plasma radius and $κ$ the inverse screening length. The eigenfrequencies increase monotonically with $ξ$ and saturate in the limit $ξ\to\infty$. Compared with the results in the Coulomb limit~[D. H. E. Dubin, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{66}, 2076 (1991)], we find a new class of modes characterized by the number $n$ which determines the number of radial nodes in the perturbed potential. These modes originate from the degenerate bulk modes of the Coulomb system. Analytical formulas for the eigenfrequencies are derived for limiting cases.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two-dimensional dipole systems

The superfluid to normal fluid transition of dipolar bosons in two dimensions is studied throughout the whole density range using path integral Monte Carlo simulations and summarized in the phase diagram. While at low densities, we find good agreement with the universal results depending only on the scattering length $a_s$, at moderate and high densities, the transition temperature is strongly affected by interactions and the elementary excitation spectrum. The results are expected to be of relevance to dipolar atomic and molecular systems and indirect excitons in quantum wells.

Nonlinear magnetoplasmons in strongly coupled Yukawa plasmas

The existence of plasma oscillations at multiples of the magnetoplasmon frequency in a strongly coupled two-dimensional magnetized Yukawa plasma is reported, based on extensive molecular dynamics simulations. These modes are the analogues of Bernstein modes which are renormalized by strong interparticle correlations. Their properties are theoretically explained by a dielectric function incorporating the combined effect of a magnetic field, strong correlations and finite temperature.

Efficient grid-based method in nonequilibrium Green's function calculations. Application to model atoms and molecules

We propose and apply the finite-element discrete variable representation to express the nonequilibrium Green's function for strongly inhomogeneous quantum systems. This method is highly favorable against a general basis approach with regard to numerical complexity, memory resources, and computation time. Its flexibility also allows for an accurate representation of spatially extended hamiltonians, and thus opens the way towards a direct solution of the two-time Schwinger/Keldysh/Kadanoff-Baym equations on spatial grids, including e.g. the description of highly excited states in atoms. As first benchmarks, we compute and characterize, in Hartree-Fock and second Born approximation, the ground states of the He atom, the H$_2$ molecule and the LiH molecule in one spatial dimension. Thereby, the ground-state/binding energies, densities and bond-lengths are compared with the direct solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Shell Structure of Confined Charges at Strong Coupling

A theoretical description of shell structure for charged particles in a harmonic trap is explored at strong coupling conditions of $Γ$ = 50 and 100. The theory is based on an extension of the hypernetted chain approximation to confined systems plus a phenomenological representation of associated bridge functions. Predictions are compared to corresponding Monte Carlo simulations and quantitative agreement for the radial density profile is obtained.

How spherical plasma crystals form

The correlation buildup and the formation dynamics of the shell structure in a spherically confined one-component plasma are studied. Using Langevin dynamics simulations the relaxation processes and characteristic time scales and their dependence on the pair interaction and dissipation in the plasma are investigated. While in systems with Coulomb interaction (e.g. trapped ions) in a harmonic confinement shell formation starts at the plasma edge and proceeds inward, this trend is significantly weakened for dusty plasmas with Yukawa interaction. With a suitable change of the confinement conditions the crystallization scenario can be externally controlled.

Quantum kinetic approach to time-resolved photoionization of atoms

Theoretical approaches to the photoionization of few-electron atoms are discussed. These include nonequilibrium Greens functions and wave function based approaches. In particular, the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock method is discussed and applied to a model one-dimensional atom with four electrons. We compute ground state energies and the time-dependent photoionization by the field a strong laser pulse with two different frequencies in the ultraviolet.

Theoretical Description of Coulomb Balls - Fluid Phase

A theoretical description for the radial density profile of a finite number of identical charged particles confined in a harmonic trap is developed for application over a wide range of Coulomb coupling (or, equivalently, temperatures) and particle numbers. A simple mean field approximation neglecting correlations yields a density profile which is monotonically decreasing with radius for all temperatures, in contrast to molecular dynamics simulations and experiments showing shell structure at lower temperatures. A more complete theoretical description including charge correlations is developed here by an extension of the hypernetted chain approximation, developed for bulk fluids, to the confined charges. The results reproduce all of the qualitative features observed in molecular dynamics simulations and experiments. These predictions are then tested quantitatively by comparison with new benchmark Monte Carlo simulations. Quantitative accuracy of the theory is obtained for the selected conditions by correcting the hypernetted chain approximation with a representation for the associated bridge functions.

Quantum breathing mode of trapped bosons and fermions at arbitrary coupling

An analysis of the quantum breathing behavior of few-particle Coulomb systems in one- and two-dimensional harmonic traps is presented. We report the existence of \emph{two independent breathing modes} and present exact numerical results for two particles at any coupling strength which smoothly connect the two known limits of an \emph {ideal} quantum and a strongly coupled \emph {classical} system. Substantial differences in the breathing frequency of two-dimensional fermions and bosons are observed which may be used as a sensitive experimental tool to probe confined interacting quantum systems.

Is diffusion anomalous in two-dimensional Yukawa liquids?

There have recently been many predictions of "superdiffusion" in two-dimensional strongly coupled Yukawa systems, both by computer simulations and in dusty plasma experiments, with substantially varying diffusion exponents. Here we show that the results crucially depend on the strength of dissipation and the time instant of the measurement. For sufficiently large friction even subdiffusion is possible. However, there are strong indications that, in the long-time limit, anomalous diffusion vanishes for dissipative as well as for frictionless systems.

Towards a theory of attosecond transient recorder

Laser assisted photoemission by a chirped subfemtosecond extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse is considered within an exactly solvable quantum-mechanical model. Special emphasis is given to the energy dependence of photoexcitation cross-section. The streaked spectra are analyzed within the classical picture of initial time-momentum distribution r_ini(p,t) of photoelectrons mapped to the final energy scale. The actual time-momentum distribution in the absence of the probe laser field is shown to be a poor choice for r_ini, and a more adequate ansatz is suggested. The semiclassical theory offers a simple practically useful approximation for streaked spectra. Its limitations for sufficiently long chirped XUV pulses are established.

Equation of state of strongly coupled quark--gluon plasma -- Path integral Monte Carlo results

A strongly coupled plasma of quark and gluon quasiparticles at temperatures from $ 1.1 T_c$ to $3 T_c$ is studied by path integral Monte Carlo simulations. This method extends previous classical nonrelativistic simulations based on a color Coulomb interaction to the quantum regime. We present the equation of state and find good agreement with lattice results. Further, pair distribution functions and color correlation functions are computed indicating strong correlations and liquid-like behavior.

Fast electron generation by Coulomb scattering on spatially correlated ions in a strong laser field

Electrons colliding with spatially fixed ions in strong laser fields are investigated by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Considering first simple one-dimensional model systems, the mechanisms and energy spectra of fast electrons are analyzed, starting from collisions on a single ion. By using these electrons as projectiles for a second and third collision, the maximum possible energy obtained can be significantly increased. We then generalize the analysis to 2D systems where additional angular degrees of freedom lead to a drastic loss of efficiency. This problem can be overcome by introducing external confinements, which allow to focus the electrons and increase the intensity of high-energy electrons.

Nonequilibrium Green function approach to photoionization processes in atoms

We present a quantum kinetic approach for the time-resolved description of many-body effects in photoionization processes in atoms. The method is based on the non-equilibrium Green functions formalism and solves the Keldysh/Kadanoff-Baym equations in second Born approximation. An approximation scheme is introduced and discussed, which provides a complete single-particle description of the continuum, while the atom is treated fully correlated.

Structure and Phase transitions of Yukawa balls

In this review, an overview of structural properties and phase transitions in finite spherical dusty (complex) plasma crystals -- so-called Yukawa balls -- is given. These novel kinds of Wigner crystals can be directly analyzed experimentally with video cameras. The experiments clearly reveal a shell structure and allow to determine the shell populations, to observe metastable states and transitions between configurations as well as phase transitions. The experimental observations of the static properties are well explained by a rather simple theoretical model which treats the dust particles as being confined by a parabolic potential and interacting via an isotropic Yukawa pair potential. The excitation properties of the Yukawa balls such as normal modes and the dynamic behavior, including the time-dependent formation of the crystal requires, in addition, to include the effect of friction between the dust particles and the neutral gas. Aside from first-principle molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations several analytical approaches are reviewed which include shell models and a continuum theory. A summary of recent results and theory-experiment comparisons is given and questions for future research activities are outlined.
