Entropy in some simple one-dimensional configurations

Continuing the discussion on negative entropy in Casimir-effect like configurations, we consider two simple one-dimensional examples. One is the s-wave contribution to a plasma sphere and the other a single delta function potential. Some information on generic background potential is gained applying Levinson's theorem. For the first example we find negative entropy. The one-dimensional examples are especially interesting as these do not require the subtraction of contributions growing with temperature faster than the classical limit.

Free energy and entropy for thin sheets

We calculate the entropy and the temperature dependent part of the free energy for a free standing plane plasma sheet and for the a free standing plane slab of finite thickness with dispersion described by the plasma model. In case the plasma sheet describes a charged fluid, the entropy is positive. In case it describes a polarizable dipole sheet, the entropy takes negative values in a certain parameter region. Negative entropy is also observed for the slab, however with the reservation that the contribution from the surface plasmons was not accounted for.

Casimir interaction of strained graphene

We calculate the Casimir interaction of two freestanding graphene samples under uniaxial strain. Our approach fully takes retardation and dispersion into account and is based on quantum field theoretical expressions for conductivities in terms of the polarization operator. The force shows a rather weak dependence on the realistic values of strain, changing just by a few percent in its maximum as compared to the non-strained case.

Nonperturbative theory of atom-surface interaction: Corrections at short separations

The nonperturbative expressions for the free energy and force of interaction between a ground-state atom and a real-material surface at any temperature are presented. The transition to the Matsubara representation is performed, whereupon the comparison is made with the commonly used perturbative results based on the standard Lifshitz theory. It is shown that the Lifshitz formulas for the free energy and force of an atom-surface interaction follow from the nonperturbative ones in the lowest order of the small parameter. Numerical computations of the free energy and force for the atoms of He${}^{\ast}$ and Na interacting with a surface of an Au plate have been performed using the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity of Au and highly accurate dynamic atomic polarizabilities in the framework of both the nonperturbative and perturbative theories. According to our results, the maximum deviations between the two theories are reached at the shortest atom-surface separations of about 1nm. Simple analytic expressions for the atom-surface free energy are derived in the classical limit and for an ideal-metal plane. In the lowest order of the small parameter, they are foundX// in agreement with the perturbative ones following from the standard Lifshitz theory. Possible applications of the obtained results in the theory of van der Waals adsorption are discussed.

Casimir and Casimir-Polder forces with dissipation from first principles

We consider Casimir-Polder and Casimir forces with finite dissipation by coupling heat baths to the dipoles introducing, this way, dissipation from 'first principles'. We derive a representation of the free energy as an integral over real frequencies, which can be viewd as an generalization of the 'remarkable formula' introduced by Ford et. al. 1985. For instance, we obtain a nonperturbative representation for the atom-atom and atom-wall interactions. We investigate several limiting cases. From the limit $T\to0$ we show that the third law of thermodynamics cannot be violated within the given approach, where the dissipation parameter cannot depend on temperature 'by construction'. We conclude, that the given approach is insufficient to resolve the thermodynamic puzzle connected with the Drude model when inserted into the Lifshitz formula. Further we consider the transition to Matsubara representation and discuss modifications of the contribution from the zeroth Matsubara frequency.

Vacuum and thermal energies for two oscillators interacting through a field

We consider a simple (1+1)-dimensional model for the Casimir-Polder interaction consisting of two oscillators coupled to a scalar field. We include dissipation in a first principles approach by allowing the oscillators to interact with heat baths. For this system, we derive an expression for the free energy in terms of real frequencies. From this representation, we derive the Matsubara representation for the case with dissipation. Further we consider the case of vanishing intrinsic frequencies of the oscillators. We show that in this case the contribution from the zeroth Matsubara frequency gets modified and no problems with the laws of thermodynamics appear.

Enhanced Casimir effect for doped graphene

We analyze the Casimir interaction of doped graphene. To this end we derive a simple expression for the finite temperature polarization tensor with a chemical potential. It is found that doping leads to a strong enhancement of the Casimir force reaching almost $60\%$ in quite realistic situations. This result should be important for planning and interpreting the Casimir measurements, especially taking into account that the Casimir interaction of undoped graphene is rather weak.

Casimir effect for Dirac lattices

We consider polarizable sheets, which recently received some attention, especially in context of the dispersion interaction of thin sheets like graphene. These sheets are modeled by a collection of delta function potentials and resemble "zero range potentials", known in quantum mechanics. We develop a theoretical description and apply the so-called "TGTG"-formula to calculate the interaction of two such lattices. Thereby we make use of the formulation of the scattering of waves off such sheets provided earlier. We consider all limiting cases, providing link to earlier results. Also, we discuss the relation to the pairwise summation method.

Quantum field theoretical description for the reflectivity of graphene

We derive the polarization tensor of graphene at nonzero temperature in (2+1)-dimensional space-time. The obtained tensor coincides with the previously known one at all Matsubara frequencies, but, in contrast to it, admits analytic continuation to the real frequency axis satisfying all physical requirements. Using the obtained representation for the polarization tensor, we develope quantum field theoretical description for the reflectivity of graphene. The analytic asymptotic expressions for the reflection coefficients and reflectivities at low and high frequencies are derived for both independent polarizations of the electromagnetic field. The dependencies of reflectivities on the frequency and angle of incidence are investigated. Numerical computations using the exact expressions for the polarization tensor are performed and application regions for the analytic asymptotic results are determined.

Surface plasmon on graphene at finite $T$

Using the recently developed polarization tensor in (2+1) dimensions for the electronic excitations of graphene, we investigate the influence of temperature on the surface plasmons on graphene. We consider non-zero mass gap, but zero chemical potential. Plasmons may exist for both polarizations, TE and TM, of the electromagnetic field. For TE, the momentum region, where the dispersion function is real, appears bounded from below, whereas for TM it is bounded from above. We discuss the similarities of these features with those found previously in the case with non-zero chemical potential, but zero temperature.

Surface plasmons for doped graphene

Within the Dirac model for the electronic excitations of graphene, we calculate the full polarization tensor with finite mass and chemical potential. It has, besides the (00)-component, a second form factor, which must be accounted for. We obtain explicit formulas for both form factors and for the reflection coefficients. Using these, we discuss the regions in the momentum-frequency plane where plasmons may exist and give numeric solutions for the plasmon dispersion relations. It turns out that plasmons exist for both, TE and TM polarizations over the whole range of the ratio of mass to chemical potential, except for zero chemical potential, where only a TE plasmon exists.

QFT over the finite line. Heat kernel coefficients, spectral zeta functions and selfadjoint extensions

Following the seminal works of Asorey-Ibort-Marmo and Muñoz-Castañeda-Asorey about selfadjoint extensions and quantum fields in bounded domains, we compute all the heat kernel coefficients for any strongly consistent selfadjoint extension of the Laplace operator over the finite line $[0,L]$. The derivative of the corresponding spectral zeta function at $s=0$ (partition function of the corresponding quantum field theory) is obtained. In order to compute the correct expression for the $a_{1/2}$ heat kernel coefficient, it is necessary to know in detail which non-negative selfadjoint extensions have zero modes and how many of them they have. The answer to this question leads us to analyse zeta function properties for the Von Neumann-Krein extension, the only extension with two zero modes.

Dirac lattices, zero-range potentials and self adjoint extension

We consider the electromagnetic field in the presence of polarizable point dipoles. In the corresponding effective Maxwell equation these dipoles are described by three dimensional delta function potentials. We review the approaches handling these: the selfadjoint extension, regularization/renormalisation and the zero range potential methods. Their close interrelations are discussed in detail and compared with the electrostatic approach which drops the contributions from the self fields. For a homogeneous two dimensional lattice of dipoles we write down the complete solutions, which allow, for example, for an easy numerical treatment of the scattering of the electromagnetic field on the lattice or for investigating plasmons. Using these formulas, we consider the limiting case of vanishing lattice spacing. For a scalar field and for the TE polarization of the electromagnetic field this transition is smooth and results in the results known from the continuous sheet. Especially for the TE polarization, we reproduce the results known from the hydrodynamic model describing a two dimensional electron gas. For the TM polarization, for polarizability parallel and perpendicular to the lattice, in both cases, the transition is singular. For the parallel polarizability this is surprising and different from the hydrodynamic model. For perpendicular polarizability this is what was known in literature. We also investigate the case when the transition is done with dipoles described by smeared delta function, i.e., keeping a regularization. Here, for TM polarization for parallel polarizability, when subsequently doing the limit of vanishing lattice spacing, we reproduce the result known from the hydrodynamic model. In case of perpendicular polarizability we need an additional renormalization to reproduce the result obtained previously by stepping back from the dipole approximation.

Low temperature expansion in the Lifshitz formula

The low temperature expansion of the free energy in a Casimir effect setup is considered in detail. The starting point is the Lifshitz formula in Matsubara representation and the basic method is its reformulation using the Abel-Plana formula making full use of the analytic properties. This provides a unified description of specific models. We re-derive the known results and, in a number of cases, we are able to go beyond. We also discuss the cases with dissipation. It is an aim of the paper to give a coherent exposition of the topic. The paper includes the derivations and should provide a self contained representation.

On the type of the temperature phase transition in O(N) models within a perturbative analysis

We investigate the type of the temperature phase transition in the $N$ component $\la ϕ^4$ ($O(N)$) model of scalar fields. Actual calculations are carried out in the beyond-super-daisy approximation (BSDA). The cases $N = 1$ and larger $N$ are considered separately. Using the solutions of gap equations we show that the character of the phase transition depends on the account for graphs BSDA. The role of different kinds of diagrams (especially the "sunset" one) is clarified. It is shown in a perturbation theory in the effective expansion parameter $N^{- 1/3}$ that the kind of the phase transition depends on the value of coupling $\la$. It turns from a weak first-order to the second-order one for increasing $\la$. This is in agreement with the observation found recently for the $O(1)$ model in Monte Carlo simulations on a lattice. Comparison with results of other authors is given.

Monoatomically thin polarizable sheets

We consider a flat lattice of dipoles modeled by harmonic oscillators interacting with the electromagnetic field in dipole approximation. Eliminating the variables from the coupled equations of motion, we come to effective Maxwell equations. These allow for taking the lattice spacing $a$ to zero. As a result, we obtain reflection coefficients for the scattering of electromagnetic waves off the sheet. These are a generalization of that known from the hydrodynamic model. For instance, we get a non trivial scattering for polarizability perpendicular to the sheet. Also we show that the case of a sheet polarizable parallel to the sheet can be obtained in a natural way from a plasma layer of finite thickness. As an alternative approach we discuss the elimination of the electromagnetic fields resulting in effective equations for the oscillators. These show, for $a\to 0$, divergent behavior, resulting from the electrostatic interaction of the dipoles.

Quantum vacuum interaction between two cosmic strings revisited

We reconsider the quantum vacuum interaction energy between two straight parallel cosmic strings. This problem was discussed several times in an approach treating both strings perturbatively and treating only one perturbatively. Here we point out that a simplifying assumption made in [1] can be justified and show that, despite the global character of the background, the perturbative approach delivers a correct result. We consider the applicability of the scattering methods, developed in the past decade for the Casimir effect, for the cosmic string and find it not applicable. We calculate the scattering T-operator on one string. Finally, we consider the vacuum interaction of two strings when each carries a two dimensional delta function potential.

Surface plasmon for graphene in the Dirac equation model

We consider single-layer plane graphene with electronic excitations described by the Dirac equation. Using a known representation of the polarization tensor in terms of the spinor loop we show the existence of surface modes, i.e., of undamped in time excitations of the \elm field, propagating along the graphene. These show up in the TE polarization and exist at zero temperature.
