On the asymptotic distinct prime partitions of integers

We discuss $Q(n)$, the number of ways a given integer $n$ may be written as a sum of distinct primes, and study its asymptotic form $Q_{as}(n)$ valid in the limit $n\to\infty$. We obtain $Q_{as}(n)$ by Laplace inverting the fermionic partition function of primes, in number theory called the generating function of the distinct prime partitions, in the saddle-point approximation. We find that our result of $Q_{as}(n)$, which includes two higher-order corrections to the leading term in its exponent and a pre-exponential correction factor, approximates the exact $Q(n)$ far better than its simple leading-order exponential form given so far in the literature.

Semiclassical treatment of symmetry breaking and bifurcations in a non-integrable potential

We have derived an analytical trace formula for the level density of the Hénon-Heiles potential using the improved stationary phase method, based on extensions of Gutzwiller's semiclassical path integral approach. This trace formula has the correct limit to the standard Gutzwiller trace formula for the isolated periodic orbits far from all (critical) symmetry-breaking points. It continuously joins all critical points at which an enhancement of the semiclassical amplitudes occurs. We found a good agreement between the semi- classical and the quantum oscillating level densities for the gross shell structures and for the energy shell corrections, solving the symmetry breaking problem at small energies.

A phenomenological approach to the equation of state of a unitary Fermi gas

We propose a phenomenological approach for the equation of state of a unitary Fermi gas. The universal equation of state is parametrised in terms of Fermi-Dirac integrals. This reproduces the experimental data over the accessible range of fugacity and normalised temperature, but cannot describe the superfluid phase transition found in the MIT experiment \cite{ku}. The most sensitive data for compressibility and specific heat at phase transition can, however, befitted by introducing into the grand partition function a pair of complex conjugate zeros lying in the complex fugacity plane slightly off the real axis.

Shell structure and orbit bifurcations in finite fermion systems

We first give an overview of the shell-correction method which was developed by V. M. Strutinsky as a practicable and efficient approximation to the general selfconsistent theory of finite fermion systems suggested by A. B. Migdal and collaborators. Then we present in more detail a semiclassical theory of shell effects, also developed by Strutinsky following original ideas of M. Gutzwiller. We emphasize, in particular, the influence of orbit bifurcations on shell structure. We first give a short overview of semiclassical trace formulae, which connect the shell oscillations of a quantum system with a sum over periodic orbits of the corresponding classical system, in what is usually called the "periodic orbit theory". We then present a case study in which the gross features of a typical double-humped nuclear fission barrier, including the effects of mass asymmetry, can be obtained in terms of the shortest periodic orbits of a cavity model with realistic deformations relevant for nuclear fission. Next we investigate shell structures in a spheroidal cavity model which is integrable and allows for far-going analytical computation. We show, in particular, how period-doubling bifurcations are closely connected to the existence of the so-called "superdeformed" energy minimum which corresponds to the fission isomer of actinide nuclei. Finally, we present a general class of radial power-law potentials which approximate well the shape of a Woods-Saxon potential in the bound region, give analytical trace formulae for it and discuss various limits (including the harmonic oscillator and the spherical box potentials).

Exact and asymptotic local virial theorems for finite fermionic systems

We investigate the particle and kinetic-energy densities for a system of $N$ fermions confined in a potential $V(\bfr)$. In an earlier paper [J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. {\bf 36}, 1111 (2003)], some exact and asymptotic relations involving the particle density and the kinetic-energy density locally, i.e. at any given point $\bfr$, were derived for isotropic harmonic oscillators in arbitrary dimensions. In this paper we show that these {\it local virial theorems} (LVT) also hold exactly for linear potentials in arbitrary dimensions and for the one-dimensional box. We also investigate the validity of these LVTs when they are applied to arbitrary smooth potentials. We formulate generalized LVTs that are supported by a semiclassical theory which relates the density oscillations to the closed non-periodic orbits of the classical system. We test the validity of these generalized theorems numerically for various local potentials. Although they formally are only valid asymptotically for large particle numbers $N$, we show that they practically are surprisingly accurate also for moderate values of $N$.

Semiclassical theory for spatial density oscillations in fermionic systems

We investigate the particle and kinetic-energy densities for a system of $N$ fermions bound in a local (mean-field) potential $V(\bfr)$. We generalize a recently developed semiclassical theory [J. Roccia and M. Brack, Phys. Rev.\ Lett. {\bf 100}, 200408 (2008)], in which the densities are calculated in terms of the closed orbits of the corresponding classical system, to $D>1$ dimensions. We regularize the semiclassical results $(i)$ for the U(1) symmetry breaking occurring for spherical systems at $r=0$ and $(ii)$ near the classical turning points where the Friedel oscillations are predominant and well reproduced by the shortest orbit going from $r$ to the closest turning point and back. For systems with spherical symmetry, we show that there exist two types of oscillations which can be attributed to radial and non-radial orbits, respectively. The semiclassical theory is tested against exact quantum-mechanical calculations for a variety of model potentials. We find a very good overall numerical agreement between semiclassical and exact numerical densities even for moderate particle numbers $N$. Using a "local virial theorem", shown to be valid (except for a small region around the classical turning points) for arbitrary local potentials, we can prove that the Thomas-Fermi functional $τ_{\text{TF}}[ρ]$ reproduces the oscillations in the quantum-mechanical densities to first order in the oscillating parts.

Fragmentation of the photoabsorption strength in neutral and charged metal microclusters

The line shape of the plasma resonance in both neutral and charged small sodium clusters is calculated. The overall properties of the multipeak structure observed in the photoabsorption cross section of spherical Na_8 and Na_20 neutral clusters can be understood in terms of Landau damping. Quantal configurations are shown to play an important role. In the case of charged Na_9+ and Na_21^+ clusters a single peak is predicted that carries most of the oscillator strength.

Fermionic ground state at unitarity and Haldane Exclusion Statistics

We consider a few-particle system of trapped neutral fermionic atoms at ultra-low temperatures, with the attractive interaction tuned to Feshbach resonance. We calculate the energies and the spatial densities of the few-body systems using a generalisation of the extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF) method, and assuming the particles obey the Haldane-Wu fractional exclusion statistics (FES) at unitarity. This method is different from the scaled ETF version given by Chang and Bertsch (Phys. Rev. A76,021603(R) (2007)). Our semiclassical FES results are consistent with the Monte-Carlo calculations of the above authors, but can hardly be distinguished from their over all scaling of the ETF result at unitarity.

Coupling of Surface and Volume Dipole Oscillations in C-60 Molecules

We first give a short review of the ``local-current approximation'' (LCA), derived from a general variation principle, which serves as a semiclassical description of strongly collective excitations in finite fermion systems starting from their quantum-mechanical mean-field ground state. We illustrate it for the example of coupled translational and compressional dipole excitations in metal clusters. We then discuss collective electronic dipole excitations in C$_{60}$ molecules (Buckminster fullerenes). We show that the coupling of the pure translational mode (``surface plasmon'') with compressional volume modes in the semiclasscial LCA yields semi-quantitative agreement with microscopic time-dependent density functional (TDLDA) calculations, while both theories yield qualitative agreement with the recent experimental observation of a ``volume plasmon''.

Super-shell structure in harmonically trapped fermionic gases and its semi-classical interpretation

It was recently shown in self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that a harmonically trapped dilute gas of fermionic atoms with a repulsive two-body interaction exhibits a pronounced {\it super-shell} structure: the shell fillings due to the spherical harmonic trapping potential are modulated by a beat mode. This changes the ``magic numbers'' occurring between the beat nodes by half a period. The length and amplitude of the beating mode depends on the strength of the interaction. We give a qualitative interpretation of the beat structure in terms of a semiclassical trace formula that uniformly describes the symmetry breaking U(3) $\to$ SO(3) in a 3D harmonic oscillator potential perturbed by an anharmonic term $\propto r^4$ with arbitrary strength. We show that at low Fermi energies (or particle numbers), the beating gross-shell structure of this system is dominated solely by the two-fold degenerate circular and (diametrically) pendulating orbits.

Supershell structure in trapped dilute Fermi gases

We show that a dilute harmonically trapped two-component gas of fermionic atoms with a weak repulsive interaction has a pronounced super-shell structure: the shell fillings due to the spherical harmonic trapping potential are modulated by a beat mode. This changes the ``magic numbers'' occurring between the beat nodes by half a period. The length and amplitude of this beating mode depend on the strength of the interaction. We give a simple interpretation of the beat structure in terms of a semiclassical trace formula for the symmetry breaking U(3) --> SO(3).

Level density of the Hénon-Heiles system above the critical barrier Energy

We discuss the coarse-grained level density of the Hénon-Heiles system above the barrier energy, where the system is nearly chaotic. We use periodic orbit theory to approximate its oscillating part semiclassically via Gutzwiller's semiclassical trace formula (extended by uniform approximations for the contributions of bifurcating orbits). Including only a few stable and unstable orbits, we reproduce the quantum-mechanical density of states very accurately. We also present a perturbative calculation of the stabilities of two infinite series of orbits (R$_n$ and L$_m$), emanating from the shortest librating straight-line orbit (A) in a bifurcation cascade just below the barrier, which at the barrier have two common asymptotic Lyapunov exponents $χ_{\rm R}$ and $χ_{\rm L}$.

Uniform semiclassical trace formula for U(3) --> SO(3) symmetry breaking

We develop a uniform semiclassical trace formula for the density of states of a three-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator (HO), perturbed by a term $\propto r^4$. This term breaks the U(3) symmetry of the HO, resulting in a spherical system with SO(3) symmetry. We first treat the anharmonic term in semiclassical perturbation theory by integration of the action of the perturbed periodic HO orbits over the manifold $\mathbb{C}$P$^2$ which characterizes their 4-fold degeneracy. Then we obtain an analytical uniform trace formula which in the limit of strong perturbations (or high energy) asymptotically goes over into the correct trace formula of the full anharmonic system with SO(3) symmetry, and in the limit $ε$ (or energy) $\to 0$ restores the HO trace formula with U(3) symmetry. We demonstrate that the gross-shell structure of this anharmonically perturbed system is dominated by the two-fold degenerate diameter and circular orbits, and {\it not} by the orbits with the largest classical degeneracy, which are the three-fold degenerate tori with rational ratios $ω_r:ω_ϕ=N:M$ of radial and angular frequencies. The same holds also for the limit of a purely quartic spherical potential $V(r)\propto r^4$.

Periodic orbit theory for the Hénon-Heiles system in the continuum region

We investigate the resonance spectrum of the Hénon-Heiles potential up to twice the barrier energy. The quantum spectrum is obtained by the method of complex coordinate rotation. We use periodic orbit theory to approximate the oscillating part of the resonance spectrum semiclassically and Strutinsky smoothing to obtain its smooth part. Although the system in this energy range is almost chaotic, it still contains stable periodic orbits. Using Gutzwiller's trace formula, complemented by a uniform approximation for a codimension-two bifurcation scenario, we are able to reproduce the coarse-grained quantum-mechanical density of states very accurately, including only a few stable and unstable orbits.

Uniform approximations for pitchfork bifurcation sequences

In non-integrable Hamiltonian systems with mixed phase space and discrete symmetries, sequences of pitchfork bifurcations of periodic orbits pave the way from integrability to chaos. In extending the semiclassical trace formula for the spectral density, we develop a uniform approximation for the combined contribution of pitchfork bifurcation pairs. For a two-dimensional double-well potential and the familiar Hénon-Heiles potential, we obtain very good agreement with exact quantum-mechanical calculations. We also consider the integrable limit of the scenario which corresponds to the bifurcation of a torus from an isolated periodic orbit. For the separable version of the Hénon-Heiles system we give an analytical uniform trace formula, which also yields the correct harmonic-oscillator SU(2) limit at low energies, and obtain excellent agreement with the slightly coarse-grained quantum-mechanical density of states.

Periodic orbit theory including spin degrees of freedom

We summarize recent developments of the semiclassical description of shell effects in finite fermion systems with explicit inclusion of spin degrees of freedom, in particluar in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. We present a new approach that makes use of spin coherent states and a correspondingly enlarged classical phase space. Taking suitable limits, we can recover some of the earlier approaches. Applications to some model systems are presented.

On the canonically invariant calculation of Maslov indices

After a short review of various ways to calculate the Maslov index appearing in semiclassical Gutzwiller type trace formulae, we discuss a coordinate-independent and canonically invariant formulation recently proposed by A Sugita (2000, 2001). We give explicit formulae for its ingredients and test them numerically for periodic orbits in several Hamiltonian systems with mixed dynamics. We demonstrate how the Maslov indices and their ingredients can be useful in the classification of periodic orbits in complicated bifurcation scenarios, for instance in a novel sequence of seven orbits born out of a tangent bifurcation in the Hénon-Heiles system.
