Spectroscopy of stripe order in La1.8Sr0.2NiO4 using resonant soft x-ray diffraction

Strong resonant enhancements of the charge-order and spin-order superstructure-diffraction intensities in La1.8Sr0.2NiO4 are observed when x-ray energies in the vicinity of the Ni L2,3 absorption edges are used. The pronounced photon-energy and polarization dependences of these diffraction intensities allow for a critical determination of the local symmetry of the ordered spin and charge carriers. We found that not only the antiferromagnetic order but also the charge-order superstructure resides within the NiO2 layers; the holes are mainly located on in-plane oxygens surrounding a Ni2+ site with the spins coupled antiparallel in close analogy to Zhang-Rice singlets in the cuprates.

High pressure diffraction studies on Ca2RuO4

We studied the crystal and magnetic structure of Ca2RuO4 by different diffraction techniques under high pressure. The observed first order phase transition at moderate pressure (0.5 GPa) between the insulating phase and the metallic high pressure phase is characterized by a broad region of phase coexistence. The following structural changes are observed as function of pressure: a) a discontinuous change of both the tilt and rotation angle of the RuO6-Octahedra at this transition, b) a gradual decrease of the tilt angle in the high pressure phase (p>0.5 GPa) and c) the disappearance of the tilt above 5.5GPa leading to a higher symmetry structure. By single crystal neutron diffraction at low temperature, the ferromagnetic component of the high pressure phase and a rearrangement of antiferromagnetic order in the low pressure phase was observed.

Crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_{4} : role of the orbital degree of freedom

The crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 (0<x<0.7) has been studied by diffraction techniques and high resolution capacitance dilatometry. There is no evidence for a structural phase transition like those found in isostructural cuprates or nickelates, but there are significant structural changes induced by the variation of temperature and doping which we attribute to a rearrangement of the orbital occupation.

Structural aspects of metamagnetism in Ca_{2-x}Sr_{x}RuO_4 (0.2 < x < 0.5): field tuning of orbital occupation

The crystal structure of Ca_{2-x}Sr_xRuO_4 with 0.2 < x < 1.0 has been studied by diffraction techniques and by high resolution capacitance dilatometry as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Upon cooling in zero magnetic field below about 25 K the structure shrinks along the c-direction and elongates in the a, b planes (0.2 < x < 1.0), whereas the opposite occurs upon cooling at high-field (x = 0.2 and 0.5). These findings indicate an orbital rearrangement driven by temperature and magnetic field, which accompanies the metamagnetic transition in these compounds.

Strongly Enhanced Magnetic Fluctuations in a Heavy-mass Layered Ruthenate

We have studied the magnetic excitations in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$, x=0.52 and 0.62, which exhibit an anomalous high susceptibility and heavy mass Fermi liquid behavior. Our inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal strongly enhanced magnetic fluctuations around an incommensurate wave vector (0.22,0,0) pointing to a magnetic instability. The magnetic fluctuations show no correlation in c-direction and also along the RuO$_2$-planes the signal is extremely broad, $Δq =0.45$ Å$^{-1}$. These fluctuations can quantitatively account for the high specific heat coefficient and relate to the high macroscopic susceptibility. The magnetic scattering is attributed to the $γ$-band, the active band for spin triplet superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Crystal and magnetic structure of LaTiO3 : evidence for non-degenerate $t_{2g}$-orbitals

The crystal and magnetic structure of LaTiO3 ~ has been studied by x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques using nearly stoichiometric samples. We find a strong structural anomaly near the antiferromagnetic ordering, T$_N$=146 K. In addition, the octahedra in LaTiO3 exhibit an intrinsic distortion which implies a splitting of the t2g-levels. Our results indicate that LaTiO3 should be considered as a Jahn-Teller system where the structural distortion and the resulting level splitting are enhanced by the magnetic ordering.

Anisotropy of the incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4: a study with polarized neutrons

The anisotropy of the magnetic incommensurate fluctuations in Sr2RuO4 has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering with polarized neutrons. We find a sizeable enhancement of the out of plane component by a factor of two for intermediate energy transfer which appears to decrease for higher energies. Our results qualitatively confirm calculations of the spin-orbit coupling, but the experimental anisotropy and its energy dependence are weaker than predicted.

Electron-phonon interaction in n-doped cuprates: an Inelastic X-ray Scattering study

Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) with very high (meV) energy resolution has become a valuable spectroscopic tool, complementing the well established coherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) technique for phonon dispersion investigations. In the study of crystalline systems IXS is a viable alternative to INS, especially in cases where only small samples are available. Using IXS, we have measured the phonon dispersion of Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+δ} along the [x,0,0] and [x,x,0] in-plane directions. Compared to the undoped parent compound, the two highest longitudinal optical (LO) phonon branches are shifted to lower energies because of Coulomb-screening effects brought about by the doped charge carriers. An additional anomalous softening of the highest branch is observed around q=(0.2,0,0). This anomalous softening, akin to what has been observed in other compounds, provides evidence for a strong electron-phonon coupling in the electron-doped high-temperature superconductors.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

Magnetic excitations in \srruo ~ have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. The magnetic fluctuations are dominated by incommensurate peaks related to the Fermi surface nesting of the quasi-one-dimensional $d_{xz}$- and $d_{yz}$-bands. The shape of the incommensurate signal agrees well with RPA calculations. At the incommensurate {\bf Q}-positions the energy spectrum considerably softens upon cooling pointing to a close magnetic instability : \srruo ~does not exhibit quantum criticality but is very close to it. $ω/ T$-scaling may be fitted to the data for temperatures above 30 K. Below the superconducting transition, the magnetic response at the nesting signal is not found to change in the energy range down to 0.4meV.

Anomalous spin density distribution on oxygen and Ru in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$: A polarised neutron diffraction study

By means of polarized neutron diffraction in a magnetic field of 7.0 T at 1.6 K an anomalously large magnetization density is observed on the in-plane oxygen in Ca$_{1.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$RuO$_4$. Field-induced moments of different ions are determined by refinement on the flipping ratios, yielding $μ$$_{Ru}$ = 0.346(11) $μ$$_B$, $μ_{O1}$ = 0.076(6) $μ$$_B$ and $μ_{O2}$ = 0.009(6) $μ$$_B$. The moment on the oxygen arises from the strong hybridization between the Ru-4d and O-2p orbitals. %The maximum entropy method is used for the %reconstruction of the magnetization density and reveals a strongly anisotropic The maximum entropy magnetization density reconstruction reveals a strongly anisotropic density at the Ru site, consistent with the distribution of the {\it xy} ($t_{2g}$ band) {\it d}-orbitals.

Lattice dynamics of CuGeO$_3$ : inelastic neutron scattering and model calculations

The lattice dynamics in CuGeO$_3$ has been analyzed by the combination of inelastic neutron scattering studies and lattice dynamical model calculations. We report an almost complete set of dispersion curves along the three orthorhombic directions and along [101]. The dispersion of branches associated with the modes directly involved in the spin-Peierls transition allows to explain the particular propagation vector of the structural distortion in the dimerized phase.

High-Energy Spin Dynamics in La$_{1.69}$Sr$_{0.31}$NiO$_4$

We have mapped out the spin dynamics in a stripe-ordered nickelate, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4}$ with $x \simeq 0.31$, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe spin-wave excitations up to 80 meV emerging from the incommensurate magnetic peaks with an almost isotropic spin-velocity: $\hbar c_s\sim 0.32$ eV Å, very similar to the velocity in the undoped, insulating parent compound, La$_{2}$NiO$_{4}$. We also discuss the similarities and differences of the inferred spin-excitation spectrum with those reported in superconducting high-$T_c$ cuprates.

Anomalous Dispersion of Longitudinal Optical Phonons in $\mathrm{\mathbf{Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+\bmδ}}}$ Determined by Inelastic X-ray Scattering

The phonon dispersions of $\mathrm{Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_{4+δ}}$ along the $[ξ,0,0]$ direction have been determined by inelastic x-ray scattering. Compared to the undoped parent compound, the two highest longitudinal phonon branches, associated with the Cu-O bond-stretching and out-of-plane oxygen vibration, are shifted to lower energies. Moreover, an anomalous softening of the bond-stretching band is observed around $\mathbf{q}=(0.2,0,0)$. These signatures provide evidence for strong electron-phonon coupling in this electron-doped high-temperature superconductor.

The oxygen isotope effect in the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}

We have measured the effect of oxygen isotope substitution on the ab-plane reflectance of underdoped YBCO. The frequency shift of the transverse optic phonons due to the substitution of O-16 by O-18 yields an isotope effect of the expected magnitude for copper-oxygen stretching modes with alpha=0.5 +- 0.1. The reflectance shoulder at 400 - 500 cm^-1 shows a much smaller exponent of alpha=0.1 +- 0.1 in the normal state and alpha=0.23+- 0.1 in the superconducting state. These observations suggest that the shoulder is of electronic origin and not due to a phonon mode as has been suggested recently.

Bond-Stretching-Phonon Anomalies in Stripe-Ordered La(1.69)Sr(0.31)NiO(4)

We report a neutron scattering study of bond-stretching phonons in La(1.69)Sr(0.31)NiO(4), a doped antiferromagnet in which the added holes order in diagonal stripes at 45 deg to the Ni-O bonds. For the highest-energy longitudinal optical mode along the bonds, a softening of 20% is observed between the Brillouin zone center and zone boundary. At 45 deg to the bonds, a splitting of the same magnitude is found across much of the zone. Surprisingly, the charge-ordering wave vector plays no apparent role in the anomalous dispersions. The implications for related anomalies in the cuprates are discussed.

Collective magnetic excitations in mixed-valence Sm0.83Y0.17S

The magnetic spectral response of black-phase mixed-valence Sm0.83Y0.17S has been measured by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal. Two magnetic peaks are observed in the energy range of the Sm2+ spin-orbit transition (25-40 meV). Both of them exhibit significant dispersion along the three main symmetry directions, reminiscent of the spin-orbit exciton branch found in pure divalent SmS. The results can be reproduced by a simple phenomenological model accounting for the existence of sizeable Sm-Sm exchange interactions, and a microscopic mechanism is proposed on the basis of the "local-bound-state" theory developed previously for SmB6.

Incommensurate magnetic ordering in Sr_2Ru_(1-x)Ti_xO_4

In $\rm Sr_2RuO_4$ the spin excitation spectrum is dominated by incommensurate fluctuations at q=(0.3 0.3 q$_z$), which arise from Fermi-surface nesting. We show that upon Ti substitution, known to suppress superconductivity, a short range magnetic order develops with a propagation vector (0.307 0.307 1). This finding confirms that superconducting $\rm Sr_2RuO_4$ is extremely close to an incommensurate spin density wave instability. In addition, the ordered moment in \srton ~ points along the c-direction, which indicates that the incommensurate spin fluctuations exhibit the anisotropy required to explain a p-wave spin triplet pairing.

Giant phonon anomalies in the bond-stretching branches in Ba_0.6K_0.4BiO_3

The dispersion of the longitudinal bond-stretching (BS) branches in superconducting Ba0.6K0.4BiO3 (BKBO) studied by inelastic neutron scattering reveals giant phonon anomalies. In the [110] and [111] directions these branches even split close to the middle of the zone, in contradiction to any harmonic lattice dynamical model with cubic symmetry. The additional low energy branch in the [111] direction ends at the R-point with a frequency near 10.5THz representing a doping induced renormalization of a breathing type vibration by about 40%, the strongest observed so far in any superconductor.
