The $A(K^-_{stop},π^\pmΣ^\mp)A'$ reaction on p-shell nuclei

This letter is concerned with the study of the $K^-_{stop}A\rightarrow π^\pmΣ^\mp A'$ reaction in p-shell nuclei, i.e., $^{6,7}Li$, $^9Be$, $^{13}C$ and $^{16}O$. The $π^\pmΣ^\mp / K^-_{stop}$ emission rates are reported as a function of $A$. These rates are discussed in comparison with previous findings. The ratio $π^-Σ^+/π^+Σ^-$ in p-shell nuclei is found to depart largely from that on hydrogen, which provides support for large in-medium effects possibly generated by the sub-threshold $Λ(1405)$. The continuum momentum spectra of prompt pions and free sigmas are also discussed as well as the $π^\pmΣ^\mp$ missing mass behavior and the link with the reaction mechanism. The apparatus used for the investigation is the FINUDA spectrometer operating at the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory (LNF-INFN, Italy).

Study of some two-body non-mesonic decays of $^4_Λ$He and $^5_Λ$He

The Non-Mesonic (NM) decay of $^4_Λ{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^5_Λ{\mathrm{He}}$ in two-body channels has been studied by the FINUDA Collaboration. Two-body NM decays of hypernuclei are rare and the existing observations and theoretical calculations are scarce. The $^4_Λ{\mathrm{He}}\rightarrow d+d,\; p+t$ decay channels simultaneously observed by FINUDA on several nuclei are compared: the $pt$ channel is the dominant one. The decay yields for the two decay channels are assessed for the first time: they are $(1.37\pm 0.37)\times 10^{-5}/K^-_{stop}$ and $(8.3\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-5}/K^-_{stop}$, respectively. Due to the capability of FINUDA of identifying $^5_Λ{\mathrm{He}}$ hypernuclei, a few $^5_Λ{\mathrm{He}}\rightarrow d+t$ decay events have also been observed. The branching ratio for this decay channel has been measured for the first time: $(3.0\pm 2.3)\times 10^{-3}$.

Hypernuclear spectroscopy with K$^-$ at rest on $^7$Li, $^9$Be, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$O

The FINUDA experiment collected data to study the production of hypernuclei on different nuclear targets. The hypernucleus formation occurred through the strangeness-exchange reaction $K^-_{stop} + \; ^AZ \rightarrow \; ^A_ΛZ + π^-$. From the analysis of the momentum of the emerging $π^-$, binding energies and formation probabilities of $^7_Λ$Li, $^9_Λ$Be, $^{13}_Λ$C and $^{16}_Λ$O have been measured and are here presented. The behavior of the formation probability as a function of the atomic mass number A is also discussed.

An improved determination of the two--nucleon induced non mesonic weak decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei

The decay of $Λ$-hypernuclei without pion emission, known as Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD), gives an effective tool to investigate $Δ$S=1 four-baryon interactions. It was theoretically suggested that the two-nucleon induced mechanism could play a substantial role in reproducing the observed NMWD decay rates and nucleon spectra, but at present no direct evidence of such a mechanism has been obtained. The FINUDA experiment, exploiting the possibility to detect both charged and neutral particles coming from the hypernucleus decay, has allowed us to deduce the relative weight of the two nucleon induced decay rate to the total NMWD rate. The value of $Γ_{2N}$/$Γ_{NMWD}$=0.24$\pm$${0.03_{stat}}^{+0.03_{sys}}_{-{0.02_{sys}}}$ has been deduced, with an error reduced by a factor more than two compared with the previous assessment.

Proton spectra from Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of p-shell Lambda-Hypernuclei and evidence for the two-nucleon induced process

New spectra from the FINUDA experiment of the Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD) proton kinetic energy for 9(Lambda)Be, 11(Lambda)B, 12(Lambda)C, 13(Lambda)C, 15 (Lambda)N and 16(Lambda)O are presented and discussed along with the published data on 5(Lambda)He and 7(Lambda)Li. Exploiting the large mass number range and the low energy threshold (15 MeV) for the proton detection of FINUDA, an evaluation of both Final State Interactions (FSI) and the two nucleon induced NMWD contributions to the decay process has been done. Based on this evaluation, a linear dependence of FSI on the hypernuclear mass number A is found and for the two nucleon stimulated decay rate the experimental value of Gamma2/Gammap=0.43+-0.25 is determined for the first time. A value for the two nucleon stimulated decay rate to the total decay rate Gamma2/GammaNMWD=0.24+-0.10 is also extracted.

New results on Mesonic Weak Decay of $p$-shell $Λ$-Hypernuclei

The FINUDA experiment performed a systematic study of the charged mesonic weak decay channel of $p$-shell $Λ$-hypernuclei. Negatively charged pion spectra from mesonic decay were measured with magnetic analysis for the first time for ${^{7}_ΛLi}$, ${^{9}_ΛBe}$, ${^{11}_ΛB}$ and ${^{15}_ΛN}$. The shape of the $π^{-}$ spectra was interpreted through a comparison with pion distorted wave calculations that take into account the structure of both hypernucleus and daughter nucleus. Branching ratios $Γ_{π^{-}}/Γ_{tot}$ were derived from the measured spectra and converted to $π^{-}$ decay rates $Γ_{π^{-}}$ by means of known or extrapolated total decay widths $Γ_{tot}$ of $p$-shell $Λ$-hypernuclei. Based on these measurements, the spin-parity assignment $1/2^+$ for ${^{7}_ΛLi}$ and $5/2^+$ for ${^{11}_ΛB}$ ground-state are confirmed and a spin-parity $3/2^+$ for ${^{15}_ΛN}$ ground-state is assigned for the first time.

Limits on Low Energy Photon-Photon Scattering from an Experiment on Magnetic Vacuum Birefringence

Experimental bounds on induced vacuum magnetic birefringence can be used to improve present photon-photon scattering limits in the electronvolt energy range. Measurements with the PVLAS apparatus (E. Zavattini {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. D {\bf77} (2008) 032006) at both $λ= 1064$ nm and 532 nm lead to bounds on the parameter {\it A$_{e}$}, describing non linear effects in QED, of $A_{e}^{(1064)} < 6.6\cdot10^{-21}$ T$^{-2}$ @ 1064 nm and $A_{e}^{(532)} < 6.3\cdot10^{-21}$ T$^{-2}$ @ 532 nm, respectively, at 95% confidence level, compared to the predicted value of $A_{e}=1.32\cdot10^{-24}$ T$^{-2}$. The total photon-photon scattering cross section may also be expressed in terms of $A_e$, setting bounds for unpolarized light of $σ_{γγ}^{(1064)} < 4.6\cdot10^{-62}$ m$^{2}$ and $σ_{γγ}^{(532)} < 2.7\cdot10^{-60}$ m$^{2}$. Compared to the expected QED scattering cross section these results are a factor of $\simeq2\cdot10^{7}$ higher and represent an improvement of a factor about 500 on previous bounds based on ellipticity measurements and of a factor of about $10^{10}$ on bounds based on direct stimulated scattering measurements.

New PVLAS results and limits on magnetically induced optical rotation and ellipticity in vacuum

IIn 2006 the PVLAS collaboration reported the observation of an optical rotation generated in vacuum by a magnetic field. To further check against possible instrumental artifacts several upgrades to the PVLAS apparatus have been made during the last year. Two data taking runs, at the wavelength of 1064 nm, have been performed in the new configuration with magnetic field strengths of 2.3 T and 5 T. The 2.3 T field value was chosen in order to avoid stray fields. The new observations do not show the presence of a rotation signal down to the levels of $1.2\cdot 10^{-8}$ rad at 5 T and $1.0\cdot 10^{-8}$ rad at 2.3 T (at 95% c.l.) with 45000 passes in the magnetic field zone. In the same conditions no ellipticity signal was detected down to $1.4\cdot 10^{-8}$ at 2.3 T (at 95% c.l.), whereas at 5 T a signal is still present. The physical nature of this ellipticity as due to an effect depending on $B^2$ can be excluded by the measurement at 2.3 T. These new results completely exclude the previously published magnetically induced vacuum dichroism results, indicating that they were instrumental artifacts. These new results therefore also exclude the particle interpretation of the previous PVLAS results as due to a spin zero boson. The background ellipticity at 2.3 T can be used to determine a new limit on the total photon-photon scattering cross section of $σ_{γγ} < 4.5 \cdot10^{-34}$ barn at 95% c.l..

Production of $^{6}_Λ$H and $^{7}_Λ$H with the (K$^{-}_{stop}$,$π^+$) reaction

The production of neutron rich $Λ$-hypernuclei via the ($K^-_stop$,$π^+$) reaction has been studied using data collected with the FINUDA spectrometer at the DA$Φ$NE $ϕ$-factory (LNF). The analysis of the inclusive $π^+$ momentum spectra is presented and an upper limit for the production of $^6_Λ$H and $^7_Λ$H from $^6$Li and $^7$Li, is assessed for the first time.

A study of the proton spectra following the capture of $K^-$ in $^6$Li and $^{12}$C with FINUDA

Momenta spectra of protons emitted following the capture of $K^-$ in $^6$Li and $^{12}$C have been measured with 1% resolution. The $^{12}$C spectrum is smooth whereas for $^6$Li a well defined peak appears at about 500 MeV/$c$. The first observation of a structure in this region was identified as a strange tribaryon or, possibly, a $\bar K$-nuclear state. The peak is correlated with a $π^-$ coming from $Σ^-$ decay in flight, selected by setting momenta larger than 275 MeV/$c$. The $Σ^-$ could be produced, together with a 500 MeV/$c$ proton, by the capture of a $K^-$ in a deuteron-cluster substructure of the $^6$Li nucleus. The capture rate for such a reaction is $(1.62\pm 0.23_{stat} ^{+0.71}_{-0.44}(sys))%/K^-_{stop}$, in agreement with the existing observations on $^4$He targets and with the hypothesis that the $^6$Li nucleus can be interpreted as a $(d+α)$ cluster.

Experimental observation of optical rotation generated in vacuum by a magnetic field

We report the experimental observation of a light polarization rotation in vacuum in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. Assuming that data distribution is Gaussian, the average measured rotation is (3.9+/-0.5)e-12 rad/pass, at 5 T with 44000 passes through a 1m long magnet, with lambda = 1064 nm. The relevance of this result in terms of the existence of a light, neutral, spin-zero particle is discussed.

Signal Processing in the PVLAS Experiment

Nonlinear interactions of light with light are well known in quantum electronics, and it is quite common to generate harmonic or subharmonic beams from a primary laser with photonic crystals. One suprising result of quantum electrodynamics is that because of the quantum fluctuations of charged fields, the same can happen in vacuum. The virtual charged particle pairs can be polarized by an external field and vacuum can thus become birefringent: the PVLAS experiment was originally meant to explore this strange quantum regime with optical methods. Since its inception PVLAS has found a new, additional goal: in fact vacuum can become a dichroic medium if we assume that it is filled with light neutral particles that couple to two photons, and thus PVLAS can search for exotic particles as well. PVLAS implements a complex signal processing scheme: here we describe the double data acquisition chain and the data analysis methods used to process the experimental data.

The pi -> pi pi process in nuclei and the restoration of chiral symmetry

The results of an extensive campaign of measurements of the pi -> pi pi process in the nucleon and nuclei at intermediate energies are presented. The measurements were motivated by the study of strong pi pi correlations in nuclei. The analysis relies on the composite ratio C_{pi pi}^A, which accounts for the clear effect of the nuclear medium on the (pi pi) system. The comparison of the C_{pi pi}^A distributions for the (pi pi)_{I=J=0} and (pi pi)_{I=0,J=2} systems to the model predictions indicates that the C_{pi pi}^A behavior in proximity of the 2m_pi threshold is explainable through the partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.

Mechanical and electrical noise in the PVLAS experiment

PVLAS is an experiment which aims at the direct detection of photon-field scattering: it employs optical methods and a large rotating superconducting magnet, and its large, compact structure is affected by both mechanical and electrical noises. This paper introduces briefly the data analysis methods used in the experiment and summarizes the mechanical and electrical noise situation.

Frequency locking to a high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity of a Frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser used as the optical phase modulator

We report on the frequency locking of a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser to a 45 000 finesse, 87-cm-long, Fabry-Perot cavity using a modified form of the Pound-Drever-Hall technique. Necessary signals, such as light phase modulation and frequency correction feedback, are fed direcly to the infrared pump laser. This is sufficient to achieve a stable locking of the 532 nm visible beam to the cavity, also showing that the doubling process does not degrade laser performances.

Optical production and detection of dark matter candidates

The PVLAS collaboration is at present running, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of I.N.F.N., Padova, Italy, a very sensitive optical ellipsometer capable of measuring the small rotations or ellipticities which can be acquired by a linearly polarized laser beam propagating in vacuum through a transverse magnetic feld (vacuum magnetic birefringence). The apparatus will also be able to set new limits on mass and coupling constant of light scalar/pseudoscalar particles coupling to two photons by both producing and detecting the hypothetical particles. The axion, introduced to explain parity conservation in strong interactions, is an example of this class of particles, all of which are considered possible dark matter candidates. The PVLAS apparatus consists of a very high finesse (> 140000), 6.4 m long, Fabry-Perot cavity immersed in an intense dipolar magnetic field (~6.5 T). A linearly polarized laser beam is frequency locked to the cavity and analysed, using a heterodyne technique, for rotation and/or ellipticity acquired within the magnetic field.
