Wilson Fermions on a Transverse Lattice

In the light-front formulation of field theory, it is possible to write down a chirally invariant mass term. It thus appears as if one could solve the species doubling problem on a light-front quantized transverse lattice in a chirally invariant way. However, upon introducing link fields and after renormalizing, one finds exactly the same LF Hamiltonian as if one had started from the standard Wilson action in the first place. The (light-front) chirally invariant transverse lattice regularization is thus not chirally invariant in the conventional sense. As an application of the Wilson formulation for fermions on a $\perp$ lattice, we calculate spectrum, distribution functions and distribution amplitudes for mesons below $2 GeV$ in a truncated Fock space.

Mesons in Nuclei in the Light-Front Mean Field Approximation and Deep-Inelastic Scattering

A light-front treatment for the scalar and vector meson momentum distribution functions is developed using a model in which the nucleus is treated a static source of radius $R$. The limit $R\to \infty$ corresponds to infinite nuclear matter. In this limit, the scalar mesons are shown to carry a vanishing momentum fraction of the nuclear plus momentum $k^+$, but the vector mesons carry a significant fraction, all occuring at the experimentally inaccessible value of $k^+=0$. This confirms earlier work. A study of the $R$ dependence for sizes of real nuclei shows that a fraction of the scalar and vector mesons could be observable.

Theta Dependence of Meson Masses in the Small Mass Limit of the Massive Schwinger Model

We present a continuum formulation for $θ$-vacua in the massive Schwinger model on the light-front, where $θ$ enters as a background electric field. The effective coupling of the external field is partially screened due to vacuum polarization processes. For small fermion masses and small $θ$ we calculate the mass of the meson and find agreement with results from bosonization.

A 3+1 Dimensional LF-Model with Spontaneous $χSB$

We investigate a 3+1 dimensional toy model that exhibits spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry, both in a light-front (LF) Hamiltonian and in a Euclidean Schwinger-Dyson (SD) formulation. We show that both formulations are completely equivalent --- provided the renormalization is properly done. For the model considered, this means that if one uses the same transverse momentum cutoff on the SD and LF formulations then the vertex mass in the LF calculation must be taken to be the same as the current quark mass in the SD calculation. The kinetic mass term in the LF calculation is renormalized non-trivially, which is eventually responsible for the mass generation of the physical fermion of the model.

An Estimate of Charge Symmetry Breaking in Nuclear Deep Inelastic Scattering

We estimate the magnitude of charge symmetry breaking effects in deep inelastic scattering from nuclei. The resulting contribution to systematic uncertainties in hadronic determinations of $sin^2θ_W$ are found to be less than the current experimental accuracy, but may be important in the analyses of more precise future experiments. We expect the largest nuclear charge symmetry breaking effects in the Paschos-Wolfenstein ratio $R^-$, where the resulting uncertainty in the determination of $sin^2 θ_W$ reaches $10^{-3}$.

Fermions and Condensates on the Light-Front

Light-Front quantization is one of the most promising and physical tools towards studying deep inelastic scattering on the basis of quark gluon degrees of freedom. The simplified vacuum structure (nontrivial vacuum effects can only appear in zero-mode degrees of freedom) and the physical basis allows for a description of hadrons that stays close to intuition. I am reviewing recent progress in understanding the deep connection between renormalization of light-front Hamiltonians, effective light-front Hamiltonians and nontrivial vacuum condensates.

On the calculation of hadron form factors from Euclidean Dyson-Schwinger equations

We apply Euclidean time methods to phenomenological Dyson-Schwinger models of hadrons. By performing a Fourier transform of the momentum space correlation function to Euclidean time and by taking the large Euclidean time limit, we project onto the lightest on-mass-shell hadron for given quantum numbers. The procedure, which actually resembles lattice gauge theory methods, allows the extraction of moments of structure functions, moments of light-cone wave functions and form factors without `ad hoc' extrapolations to the on-mass-shell points. We demonstrate the practicality of the procedure with the example of the pion form factor.

Calculating the $Q\bar{Q}$ Potential in 2+1 Dimensional Light-Front QCD

Pure glue QCD is formulated on a 2+1 dimensional transverse lattice, using discrete light-front quantization. The transverse component of the gauge fields is taken to be compact, but in a linearized approximation with an effective potential. The (rest-frame) $Q\bar{Q}$ potential is evaluated numerically using Lanzcos matrix diagonalization. We first discuss the strong coupling limit analytically and then present numerical results beyond the strong coupling limit. The physical origin of confinement on a transverse lattice depends on the orientation of the external charges: For longitudinally separated charges, confinement arises from the instantaneous Coulomb interaction and for transversely separated quarks a string of link-fields forms. In the general case one obtains a superposition of both effects. Despite the asymetry in the microscopic mechanism, already a very simple ansatz for the effective link-field potential provides an almost rotationally invariant $Q\bar{Q}$ potential. The momentum carried by the glue depends strongly on the orientation of the external charges, which might have observable consequences.

Trivial Vacua, High Orders in Perturbation Theory and Nontrivial Condensates

In the limit of an infinite number of colors, an analytic expression for the quark condensate in $QCD_{1+1}$ is derived as a function of the quark mass and the gauge coupling constant. For zero quark mass, a nonvanishing quark condensate is obtained. Nevertheless, it is shown that there is no phase transition as a function of the quark mass. It is furthermore shown that the expansion of $\langle 0 | \overlineψψ|0\rangle$ in the gauge coupling has zero radius of convergence but that the perturbation series is Borel summable with finite radius of convergence. The nonanalytic behavior $\langle 0 | \overlineψψ|0\rangle \stackrel{m_q\rightarrow0}{\sim} - N_C \sqrt{G^2}$ can only be obtained by summing the perturbation series to infinite order. The sum-rule calculation is based on masses and coupling constants calculated from 't Hooft's solution to $QCD_{1+1}$ which employs LF quantization and is thus based on a trivial vacuum. Nevertheless the chiral condensate remains nonvanishing in the chiral limit which is yet another example that seemingly trivial LF vacua are {\it not} in conflict with QCD sum-rule results.

A Model of Mesons based on $χ$SB in the Light-Front Frame

Spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is discussed in the light-cone framework. The essential ingredient is an infinite number of constituents near zero light-cone momentum. These high (light-cone) energy degrees of freedom freeze out and leave behind some explicit symmetry breaking in the low (light-cone) energy effective Hamiltonian. Connections with Regge theory and soft pion theorems are discussed. Taking the order parameter to be the 4-th component of a chiral 4-vector, the effect of the spontaneous symmetry breaking on meson masses and decay width is calculated and compared with experimental data.

Calculation and Interpretation of Hadron Correlation Functions in Lattice QCD

Several new developments in the calculation and interpretation of hadron density-density correlation functions are presented. The asymptotic behavior of correlation functions is determined from a tree diagram path integral. A method is developed to use this behavior to correct for leading image contributions on a finite periodic spatial lattice and to correct for the finite temporal extent of the lattice. Equal time correlation functions are shown to determine a sum of the ground state rms radius plus a polarization correction, and it is shown how to extract the hadron polarizability from unequal time correlation functions. Image-corrected correlation functions calculated in quenched lattice QCD are presented and used to determine the size of the pion and nucleon.

Polarized $q\toΛ$ Fragmentation Functions from $e^+e^-\toΛ+X^*$

Measurement of the helicity asymmetric cross section for semi-inclusive production of $Λ$-hyperons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation near the $Z^0$ resonance allows a complete determination of the spin-dependent fragmentation functions for the different quark flavors into the $Λ$. The parity violating, self analyzing, decay of the final state $Λ$ makes the experimental analysis of the helicity asymmetry possible. This experiment should be practical with present day technology at the LEP collider at CERN or at SLC at SLAC.

Stranger Still: Kaon Loops and Strange Quark Matrix Elements of the Nucleon

Intrinsic strangeness contributions to low-energy strange quark matrix elements of the nucleon are modelled using kaon loops and meson-nucleon vertex functions taken from nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon scattering. A comparison with pion loop contributions to the nucleon electromagnetic (EM) form factors indicates the presence of significant SU(3)-breaking in the mean-square charge radii. As a numerical consequence, the kaon loop contribution to the mean square Dirac strangeness radius is significantly smaller than could be observed with parity-violating elastic ep experiments planned for CEBAF, while the contribution to the Sachs radius is large enough to be observed with PV electron scattering from (0^+,0) nuclei. Kaon loops generate a strange magnetic moment of the same scale as the isoscalar EM magnetic moment and a strange axial vector form factor having roughly one-third magnitude extracted from nu p/nubar p elastic scattering. In the chiral limit, the loop contribution to the fraction of the nucleon's scalar density arising from strange quarks has roughly the same magnitude as the value extracted from analyses of Sigma_{πN}. The importance of satisfying the Ward-Takahashi Identity, not obeyed by previous calculations, is also illustrated, and the sensitivity of results to input parameters is analyzed.
