Renormalisation-group analysis of electromagnetic couplings in the pionless effective field theory

The Wilsonian renormalisation group is applied to a system of two nonrelativistic particles interacting via short-range forces and coupled to an external EM field. By demanding that a fully off-shell one-particle-irreducible 5-point amplitude is independent of the cutoff, a renormalisation group equation is derived for the interaction current density. This is solved to obtain the fixed point corresponding to the unitary limit. The scaling behaviour of perturbations around this point is analysed. Some of these terms are related by gauge invariance to terms in the effective-range expansion; others describe short-range physics that is not included in the two-body potential. We construct observables including the bound-state form factor and show how the scaling of the terms in the interaction current is reflected in the power counting for their contributions to observables.

New fixed points of the renormalisation group for two-body scattering

We outline a separable matrix ansatz for the potentials in effective field theories of nonrelativistic two-body systems with short-range interactions. We use this ansatz to construct new fixed points of the renormalisation-group equation for these potentials. New fixed points indicate a much richer structure than previously recognized in the RG flows of simple short-range potentials.

Effective short-range interaction for spin-singlet P-wave nucleon-nucleon scattering

Distorted-wave methods are used to remove the effects of one- and two-pion exchange up to order Q^3 from the empirical 1P1 phase shift. The one divergence that arises can be renormalised using an order-Q^2 counterterm which is provided by the (Weinberg) power counting appropriate to the effective field theory for this channel. The residual interaction is used to estimate the scale of the underlying physics.

Three and Four Harmonically Trapped Particles in an Effective Field Theory Framework

We study systems of few two-component fermions interacting via short-range interactions within a harmonic-oscillator trap. The dominant interactions, which are two-body, are organized according to the number of derivatives and defined in a two-body truncated model space made from a bound-state basis. Leading-order (LO) interactions are solved for exactly using the formalism of the No-Core Shell Model, whereas corrections are treated as many-body perturbations. We show explicitly that next-to-LO and next-to-next-to-LO interactions improve convergence as the model space increases. We present results at unitarity for three- and four-fermion systems, which show excellent agreement with the exact solution (for the three-body problem) and results obtained by others methods (in the four-body case). We also present results for finite scattering lengths and non-zero range of the interaction, including (at positive scattering length) observation of a change in the structure of the three-body ground state and extraction of the atom-dimer scattering length.

Exact renormalization group and many-fermion systems

The exact renormalization group methods is applied to many fermion systems with short-range attractive force. The strength of the attractive fermion-fermion interaction is determined from the vacuum scattering length. A set of approximate flow equations is derived including fermionic and bosonic fluctuations. The numerical solutions show a phase transition to a gapped phase. The inclusion of bosonic fluctuations is found to be significant only in the small-gap regime.

An Effective Field Theory for the Three-Body System

We study the scattering of a particle from a bound pair in an effective field theory using a distorted-wave renormalisation group method to find the power-counting for the three-body force terms. We find that three-body terms appear at lower orders than naively expected. They start with a marginal term that varies as a logarithm rather than a power of the energy scales in the problem. The marginal term has important implications for the three-body problem in nuclear physics.

Relativistic Faddeev approach to the NJL model at finite density

We study the nucleon solution of the relativistic Faddeev equation as a function of density in the framework of a generalized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We truncate the interacting two-body channels to the scalar diquark channel, the coupling constant of which is treated as a parameter. A 3-momentum cut-off is used to regularize the model. The Faddeev equation is solved numerically using the methods developed by Tjon and others. At zero density the nucleon is bound only for unrealistically large values of the scalar coupling and this binding energy decreases quickly with increasing density.

Scheming in Dimensional Regularization

We consider the most general loop integral that appears in non-relativistic effective field theories with no light particles. The divergences of this integral are in correspondence with simple poles in the space of complex space-time dimensions. Integrals related to the original integral by subtraction of one or more poles in dimensions other than D=4 lead to nonminimal subtraction schemes. Subtraction of all poles in correspondence with ultraviolet divergences of the loop integral leads naturally to a regularization scheme which is precisely equivalent to cutoff regularization. We therefore recover cutoff regularization from dimensional regularization with a nonminimal subtraction scheme. We then discuss the power-counting for non-relativistic effective field theories which arises in these alternative schemes.

Low-energy interaction of composite spin-half systems with scalar and vector fields

We consider a composite spin-half particle moving in spatially-varying scalar and vector fields. The vector field is assumed to couple to a conserved charge, but no assumption is made about either the structure of the composite or its coupling to the scalar field. A general form for the piece of the spin-orbit interaction of the composite with the scalar and vector fields which is first-order in momentum transfer ${\bf Q}$ and second-order in the fields is derived.

A nonlocal, covariant generalisation of the NJL model

We solve a nonlocal generalisation of the NJL model in the Hartree approximation. This model has a separable interaction, as suggested by instanton models of the QCD vacuum. The choice of form factor in this interaction is motivated by the confining nature of the vacuum. A conserved axial current is constructed in the chiral limit of the model and the pion properties are shown to satisfy the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation. For reasonable values of the parameters the model exhibits quark confinement.

Constraints on Four-Point Couplings in Low-Energy Meson Interactions

We investigate from first principles the introduction of isospin-1 vector and axial-vector fields into the nonlinear sigma model. Chiral symmetry is nonlinearly realised and spin-1 fields are assumed to transform homogeneously under chiral rotations. By requiring the Hamiltonian of the theory to be bounded from below we find inequalities relating three- and four-point meson couplings. This leads to a low-energy phenomenological Lagrangian for the nonanomalous sector of $πρa_1$ strong interactions.
