Discriminating New Physics Scenarios at NLC: The Role of Polarization

We explore the potential of the Next Linear Collider (NLC), operating in the $eγ$ mode, to disentangle new physics scenarios on single $W$ production. We study the effects related with the exchange of composite fermion in the reaction $eγ\to W ν_e$, and compare with those arising from trilinear gauge boson anomalous couplings. We stress the role played by the initial state polarization to increase the reach of this machine and to discriminate the possible origin of the new phenomena.

Bounds on Contact Interactions from LEP1 Data and the High-Q^2 HERA Events

A contact four-fermion interaction between light quarks and electrons has been evoked as a possible explanation for the excess of events observed by HERA at high-$Q^2$. We explore the 1-loop effects of such interaction in $Γ(Z^0 \to e^+ e^-)$ measured at LEP and impose strong bounds on the lower limit of the effective scale. Our results are able to discard some of the contact interactions as possible explanation for the HERA events.

Z Physics Constraints on Vector Leptoquarks

We analyze the constraints on vector leptoquarks coming from radiative corrections to $Z$ physics. We perform a global fitting to the LEP data including the oblique and non-universal contributions of the most general effective Lagrangian for vector leptoquarks, which exhibits the $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariance. We show that the $Z$ physics leads to stronger bounds on second and third generation vectors leptoquarks than the ones obtained from low energy and the current collider experiments.

Compositeness Effects in the Anomalous Weak-Magnetic Moment of Leptons

We investigate the effects induced by excited leptons, at the one-loop level, in the anomalous magnetic and weak-magnetic form factors of the leptons. Using a general effective Lagrangian approach to describe the couplings of the excited leptons, we compute their contributions to the weak-magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton, which can be measured on the $Z$ peak, and we compare it with the contributions to $g_μ- 2$, measured at low energies.

Excited Fermion Contribution to Z Physics at One Loop

We investigate the effects induced by excited leptons at the one-loop level in the observables measured on the $Z$ peak at LEP. Using a general effective Lagrangian approach to describe the couplings of the excited leptons, we compute their contributions to both oblique parameters and $Z$ partial widths. Our results show that the new effects are comparable to the present experimental sensitivity, but they do not lead to a significant improvement on the available constraints on the couplings and masses of these states.

Constraints on Quartic Vector-Boson Interactions from Z Physics

We obtain the constraints on possible anomalous quartic vector-boson vertices arising from the precision measurements at the $Z$ pole. In the framework of $SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$ chiral Lagrangians, we examine all effective operators of order $D=4$ that lead to four-gauge-boson interactions but do not induce anomalous trilinear vertices. We constrain the anomalous quartic interactions by evaluating their one-loop corrections to the $Z$ pole physics. Our analysis is performed in a generic $R_ξ$ gauge and it shows that only the operators that break the $SU(2)_C$ custodial symmetry get limits close to the theoretical expectations. Our results also indicate that these anomalous couplings are already out of reach of the Next Linear $e^+ e^-$ Collider, while the Large Hadron Collider could be able to further extend the bounds on some of these couplings.

$ν_τ$ Oscillation Experiments and Present Data

Our goal in this paper is to examine the discovery potential of laboratory experiments searching for the oscillation $ν_μ(ν_e) \rightarrow ν_τ$, in the light of recent data on solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, which we analyse together with the most restrictive results from laboratory experiments on neutrino oscillations in a four-neutrino framework.}

Stimulated Neutrino Conversion in the CERN Beam

We discuss the possibility of searching for anomalous magnetic transitions of neutrinos in the CERN beam induced by the absorption or emission of low-energy photons in a high-quality resonant cavity such as the LEP radio-frequency cavities. With the attainable sensitivities of the present CERN neutrino detectors, this experiment would impose strong limits on this transition and on the radiative decay lifetime of neutrinos with masses in the range of interest to the resolution of the dark matter solar and atmospheric neutrino puzzles.

Future $ν_τ$ Oscillation Experiments and Present Data

Our goal in this paper is to examine the discovery potential of laboratory experiments searching for the oscillation $ν_μ(ν_e) \rightarrow ν_τ$, in the light of recent data on solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, which we analyse together with the most restrictive results from laboratory experiments on neutrino oscillations. In order to explain simultaneously $all$ present results we use a four-neutrino framework, with an additional sterile neutrino. Our predictions are rather pessimistic for the upcoming experiments NOMAD and CHORUS, which, we find, are able to explore only a small area of the oscillation parameter space. On the other hand, the discovery potential of future experiments is much larger. We consider three examples. E803, which is approved to operate in the future Fermilab main injector beam line, MINOS, a proposed long-baseline experiment also using the Fermilab beam, and NAUSICAA, an improved detector which improves by an order of magnitude the performance of CHORUS/NOMAD and can be operated either at CERN or at Fermilab beams. We find that those experiments can cover a very substantial fraction of the oscillation parameter space, having thus a very good chance of discovering $both$ $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ and $ν_e \rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation modes.

SIGNATURES OF CP-VIOLATION IN THE PRESENCE OF MULTIPLE B-PAIR PRODUCTION AT HADRON COLLIDER

We calculate the production of 2 b-quark pairs in hadron collisions. Sources of multiple pairs are multiple interactions and higher order perturbative QCD mechanisms. We subsequently investigate the competing effects of multiple b-pair production on measurements of CP-violation: i) the increase in event rate with multiple b-pair cross sections which may reach values of order 1 barn in the presence of multiple interactions and ii) the dilution of $b$ versus $\bar b$ tagging efficiency because of the presence of events with 4 $B$-mesons. The impact of multiple $B$-meson production is small unless the cross section for producing a single pair exceeds 1~mb. We show that even for larger values of the cross section the competing effects i) and ii) roughly compensate so that there is no loss in the precision with which CP-violating CKM angles can be determined.

Bounds on Scalar Leptoquarks from Z Physics

We analyse the constraints on scalar leptoquarks coming from radiative corrections to $Z$ physics. We perform a global fitting to the LEP data including the contributions of the most general effective Lagrangian for scalar leptoquarks, which exhibits the $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariance. We show that the bounds on leptoquarks that couple to the top quark are much stronger than the ones obtained from low energy experiments.

$ε_b$ Constraints on Self--Couplings of Vector Bosons

We analyze the constraints on possible anomalous contributions to the $W^+W^-Z$ vertex coming from non-universal radiative corrections to the $Z \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ width. We parametrize these corrections in terms of $ε_b$ and use the LEP data to establish the allowed values for the anomalous triple couplings. We examine all CP conserving effective operators that exhibit $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ gauge invariance and do not give any tree level contribution to the present experimental observables. For some of these operators our constraints are comparable with the bounds coming from a global fit of the oblique parameters, which evidences the increasing relevance of the precise measurement of the $b$--quark parameters at LEP for the search of new physics.

On the Precision of the Computation of the QCD Corrections to Electroweak Vacuum Polarizations

We demonstrate that the dispersive computation of the threshold enhancements to heavy quark vacuum polarizations is unstable. Because of the slow convergence of the dispersion relations the result critically depends on the intermediate energy region where the non-relativistic approximation, intrinsic to threshold calculations, is invalid. We discuss other ambiguities precluding a reliable calculation of the threshold contribution to the vacuum polarizations. In the absence of a solution prudence should force one to assign an error to the radiative corrections not far below the level of the pertubative O($αα_s$) contributions. This may preclude the extraction of the Higgs mass from precision measurements.

Searching for an Invisibly Decaying Higgs Boson in E^+E^-, E-Gamma, and Gamma-Gamma Collisions

Higgs bosons can have a substantial ``invisible'' branching ratio in many extensions of the Standard Model, such as models where the Higgs bosons decay predominantly into light or massless weakly interacting Goldstone bosons. In this work, we examine the production mechanisms and backgrounds for invisibly decaying Higgs bosons at the Next Linear $e^+e^-$ Collider operating in the modes $e^+e^-$, $eγ$, and $γγ$. We demonstrate that such machine is much more efficient to survey for invisibly decaying Higgs bosons than the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

Searching for Exotic Tau Decays

We discuss the potential of $τ$-charm and B factories for the search of new physics through the study of rare $τ$ decays. We consider decays that involve the violation of lepton flavour conservation. Such decays bear a close relationship to the physics of neutrino mass and the properties of the lepton sector of the electroweak theory.

Quartic Anomalous Couplings in $eγ$ Colliders

We study the production of gauge boson pairs at the next generation of linear $e^+e^-$ colliders operating in the $eγ$ mode. The processes $eγ\rightarrow VV^\prime F$ ($V,V^\prime =W$, $Z$, or $γ$ and $F=e$ or $ν$) can give valuable information on possible deviations of the quartic vector boson couplings from the Standard Model predictions. We establish the range of the new couplings that can be explored in these colliders based on a $3σ$ effect in the total cross section. We also present several kinematical distributions of the final state particles that could manifest the underlying new dynamics. Our results show that an $eγ$ collider can extend considerably the bounds on anomalous interactions coming from oblique radiative corrections and from direct searches in $e^+e^-$ colliders.

Identifying the Higgs Boson in Electron--Photon Collisions

We analyze the production and detection of the Higgs boson in the next generation of linear $e^+e^-$ colliders operating in the $eγ$ mode. In particular, we study the production mechanism $e + γ\rightarrow e γγ\rightarrow e + H$, where one photon is generated via the laser backscattering mechanism, while the other is radiated via the usual bremsstrahlung process. We show that this is the most important mechanism for Higgs boson production in a $500$ GeV $eγ$ collider for $M_H\raisebox{-.4ex}{\rlap{$\sim$}} \raisebox{.4ex}{$>$}140$ GeV. We also study the signals and backgrounds for detection of the Higgs in the different decay channels, $b \bar b$, $W^+W^-$, and $ZZ$, and suggest kinematical cuts to improve the signature of an intermediate mass Higgs boson.

Measuring the Gamma-Gamma Coupling of the Higgs at Linear Colliders

Observing the production of the Higgs particle in the $γ$-$γ$ mode of a linear $e^+e^-$ collider allows for the measurement of the $Hγγ$ coupling. We point out that for the intermediate Higgs mass range this measurement is considerably more challenging than previously believed. The $b \bar b$ signature receives a large background from the production of heavy quark pairs by resolved photons. We quantify the experimental requirements needed to make a meaningful measurement in the presence of this background.
