On the infinite tame-wild dichotomy conjecture and related problemns

We prove the tame-wild dichotomy conjecture, due to D. Simson, for infinite dimensional algebras and coalgebras. The key part of the approach is proving new representation theoretic characterizations local finiteness. Among other, we show that the Ext quiver of the category ${\rm f.d.-}A$ of finite dimensional representations of an arbitrary algebra $A$ is locally finite (i.e. $\dim(\Ext^1(S,T))<\infty$ for all simple finite dimensional $A$-modules $S,T$) if and only if for every dimension vector $\underline{d}$, the representations of $A$ of dimension vector $\underline{d}$ are all contained in a finite subcategory (a category of modules over a finite dimensional quotient algebra). This allows one reduce the tame/wild problem to the finite dimensional case and Drozd's classical result. Using this, we also prove a local-global principle for tame/wild (in the sense of non-commutative localization): a category of comodules is tame/not wild if and only if every ``finite" localization is so. We give the relations to Simson's f.c.tame/f.c.wild dichotomy, and use the methods and various embeddings we obtain to give connections to other problems in the literature. We list several questions that naturally arise.

Triangular matrix coalgebras and applications

We study generalized comatrix coalgebras and upper triangular comatrix coalgebras, which are not only a dualization but also an extension of classical generalized matrix algebras. We use these to answer several questions on Noetherian and Artinian type notions in the theory of coalgebras, and to give complete connections between these. We also solve completely the so called finite splitting problem for coalgebras: we show that a coalgebra $C$ has the property that the rational part of every finitely generated left $C^*$-module splits off if and only if $C$ has the form $C=\left(\begin{array}{cc} D & M \\ 0 & E \end{array}\right)$, an upper triangular matrix coalgebra, for a serial coalgebra $D$ whose Ext-quiver is a finite union of cycles, a finite dimensional coalgebra $E$ and a finite dimensional $D$-$E$-bicomodule $M$.

Complete Path Algebras and Rational Modules

We study rational modules over complete path and monomial algebras, and the problem of when rational modules over the dual $C^*$ of a coalgebra $C$ are closed under extensions, equivalently, when is the functor $Rat$ a torsion functor. We show that coreflexivity, closure under extensions of finite dimensional rational modules and of arbitrary modules are Morita invariant, and that they are preserved by subcoalgebras. We obtain new large classes of examples of coalgebras with torsion functor, coming from monomial coalgebras, and answer some questions in the literature.

Quiver Algebras, Path Coalgebras and co-reflexivity

We study the connection between two combinatorial notions associated to a quiver: the quiver algebra and the path coalgebra. We show that the quiver coalgebra can be recovered from the quiver algebra as a certain type of finite dual, and we show precisely when the path coalgebra is the classical finite dual of the quiver algebra, and when all finite dimensional quiver representations arise as comodules over the path coalgebra. We discuss when the quiver algebra can be recovered as the rational part of the dual of the path coalgebra. Similar results are obtained for incidence (co)algebras. We also study connections to the notion of coreflexive (co)algebras, and give a partial answer to an open problem concerning tensor products of coreflexive coalgebras.

Path subcoalgebras, finiteness properties and quantum groups

We study subcoalgebras of path coalgebras that are spanned by paths (called path subcoalgebras) and subcoalgebras of incidence coalgebras, and propose a unifying approach for these classes. We discuss the left quasi-co-Frobenius and the left co-Frobenius properties for these coalgebras. We classify the left co-Frobenius path subcoalgebras, showing that they are direct sums of certain path subcoalgebras arising from the infinite line quiver or from cyclic quivers. We also discuss the coreflexive property for the considered classes of coalgebras. Finally, we investigate which of the co-Frobenius path subcoalgebras can be endowed with Hopf algebra structures, in order to produce some quantum groups with non-zero integrals, and classify all these structures over a field with primitive roots of unity of any order. These turn out to be liftings of quantum lines over certain not necessarily abelian groups.

On two conjectures of Faith

We prove that a profinite algebra whose left (right) cyclic modules are torsionless is finite dimensional and QF. We give a relative version of the notion of left (right) PF ring for pseudocompact algebras and prove it is left-right symmetric and dual to the notion of quasi-co-Frobenius coalgebras. We also prove two ring theoretic conjectures of Faith, in the setting (and supplementary hypothesis) of profinite algebras: any profinite semiartinian selfinjective algebra is finite dimensional and QF, and any FGF profinite algebra is finite dimensional QF.

Equivalence of categories, Gruson-Jensen duality, and applications

For coalgebras $C$ over a field, we study when the categories ${}^C\Mm$ of left $C$-comodules and $\Mm^C$ of right $C$-comodules are symmetric categories, in the sense that there is a duality between the categories of finitely presented unitary left $R$-modules and finitely presented unitary left $L$-modules, where $R$ and $L$ are the functor rings associated to the finitely accessible categories ${}^C\Mm$ and $\Mm^C$.

The Dickson Subcategory Splitting Conjecture for Pseudocompact Algebras

Let $A$ be a pseudocompact (or profinite) algebra, so $A=C^*$ where $C$ is a coalgebra. We show that the if the semiartinian part (the "Dickson" part) of every $A$-module $M$ splits off in $M$, then $A$ is semiartinian, also giving a positive answer in the case of algebras arising as dual of coalgebras (pseudocompact algebras), to a well known conjecture of Faith.

The splitting problem for coalgebras: a direct approach

In this note we give a different and direct short proof to a previous result of Nastasescu and Torrecillas in \cite{NT} stating that if the rational part of any right $C^*$ module $M$ is a direct sumand in $M$ then $C$ must be finite dimensional (the splitting problem for coalgebras).

Characterisation of PF rings by the Finite Topology on duals of R-Modules

In this paper we study the properties of the finite topology on the dual of a module over an arbitrary ring. We aim to give conditions when certain properties of the field case are can be still found here. Investigating the correspondence between the closed submodules of the dual $M^{*}$ of a module $M$ and the submodules of $M$, we prove some characterisations of PF rings: the up stated correspondence is an anti isomorphism of lattices iff $R$ is a PF ring.
