Experimental proposal for measuring the Gouy phase of matter waves

The Schrödinger equation for an atomic beam predicts that it must have a phase anomaly near the beam waist analogous to the Gouy phase of an electromagnetic beam. We propose here a feasible experiment which allows for the direct determination of this anomalous phase using Ramsey interferometry with Rydberg atoms. Possible experimental limitations are discussed and shown to be completely under control within the present day technology. We also discuss how this finding can open the possibility to use the spatial mode wavefunctions of atoms as q-dits, since the Gouy phase is an essential ingredient for making rotations in the quantum states.

Residual entanglement and sudden death: A direct connection

We explore the results of [V. Coffman, et al., Phys. Rev. A 61 (2000) 052306] derived for general tripartite states in a dynamical context. We study a class of physically motivated tripartite systems. We show that whenever entanglement sudden death occurs in one of the partitions residual entanglement will appear. For fourpartite systems however, the appearance of residual entanglement is not conditioned by sudden death of entanglement. We can only say that if sudden death of entanglement occurs in some partition there will certainly be residual entanglement.

Systematic Implementation of Implicit Regularization for Multi-Loop Feynman Diagrams

Implicit Regularization (IReg) is a candidate to become an invariant framework in momentum space to perform Feynman diagram calculations to arbitrary loop order. In this work we present a systematic implementation of our method that automatically displays the terms to be subtracted by Bogoliubov's recursion formula. Therefore, we achieve a twofold objective: we show that the IReg program respects unitarity, locality and Lorentz invariance and we show that our method is consistent since we are able to display the divergent content of a multi-loop amplitude in a well defined set of basic divergent integrals in one loop momentum only which is the essence of IReg. Moreover, we conjecture that momentum routing invariance in the loops, which has been shown to be connected with gauge symmetry, is a fundamental symmetry of any Feynman diagram in a renormalizable quantum field theory.

Quantum gravitational contributions to the beta function of quantum electrodynamics

We show in a diagrammatic and regularization independent analysis that the quadratic contribu- tion to the beta function which has been conjectured to render quantum electrodynamics asymp- totically free near the Planck scale has its origin in a surface term. Such surface term is intrinsically arbitrarily valued and it is argued to vanish in a consistent treatment of the model.

Degree of information accessibility: a precursor of the quantum--classical transition

One of the fundamental problems with the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics, according to Bohr, is the fact that "our usual description of physical phenomena is based entirely on the idea that the phenomena concerned may be observed without disturbing them appreciably". Furthermore in his articles discussing the subject Bohr argues that the action of the probe will be affected by the system and inasmuch the system will be affected by the probe. Specifically in Gedanken experiments he tests the wave-particle duality of the system and implicitly assumes that the probe is also a quantum system. A universal character can only be attributed to Quantum Mechanics provided a complementarity relation is also valid for the probe. As a consequence the state system-probe becomes entangled. In the past fourty years complementarity tests have been proposed. However, much less attention has been paid to the study of an arbitrary probe system. In the present contribution, we fill in this gap and show that the key ingredient for the quantum-classical transition is not necessarily the information generated by the system-probe interaction but rather by its accessibility. Our results have been successfully tested in the interferometric experiment. Our results also allow for a simple physical interpretation of the physics of Ramsey Zones where one photon (average) interacts with a two level atom in a classical manner, i.e., no entanglement is generated.

Ultraviolet and Infrared Divergences in Implicit Regularization: a Consistent Approach

Implicit Regularization is a 4-dimensional regularization initially conceived to treat ultraviolet divergences. It has been successfully tested in several instances in the literature, more specifically in those where Dimensional Regularization does not apply. In the present contribution we extend the method to handle infrared divergences as well. We show that the essential steps which rendered Implicit Regularization adequate in the case of ultraviolet divergences have their counterpart for infrared ones. Moreover we show that a new scale appears, typically an infrared scale which is completely independent of the ultraviolet one. Examples are given.

Indirect evidence for the Gouy phase for matter waves

We show that the well known geometric phase, the Gouy phase in optics can be defined for matter waves in vacuum as well. In particular we show that the underlying physics for the "matter waves" Gouy phase is the generalized Schroedinger-Robertson uncertainty principle, more specifically, the off diagonal elements of the covariance matrix. Recent experiments involving the diffraction of fullerene molecules and the uncertainty principle are shown to be quantitatively consistent with the existence of a Gouy phase for matter waves.

On the Casimir energy for a massive quantum scalar field and the Cosmological constant

We present a rigorous, regularization independent local quantum field theoretic treatment of the Casimir effect for a quantum scalar field of mass $μ\ne0$ which yields closed form expressions for the energy density and pressure. As an application we show that there exist special states of the quantum field at fixed cosmic time, in which the expectation value of the renormalized energy-momentum tensor is independent of the space coordinate and is of the perfect fluid form $g_{μ,ν}ρ_{vac}$ with $ρ_{vac}>0$, thus providing a quantum field theoretic foundation of the Cosmological constant. Using some values of $μ$ suggested in the literature for the hypothetical axion particle, there results a model for dark energy which is consistent with past and future evolution and is also in good agreement with experimental data.

Multipartite entanglement control via Quantum Zeno Effect

We develop a protocol based on 2M pairwise interacting qubits, which through Quantum Zeno Effect controls the entanglement distribution of the system. We also show that if the coupling constants are different the QZE may be used to achieve perfect entanglement swap.

Gauge invariance and the CPT and Lorentz violating induced Chern-Simons-like term in extended QED

The radiative induction of the CPT and Lorentz violating Chern-Simons (CS) term is reassessed. The massless and massive models are studied. Special attention is given to the preservation of gauge symmetry at higher orders in the background vector $b_μ$ when radiative corrections are considered. Both the study of the odd and even parity sectors of the complete vacuum polarization tensor at one-loop order and a non-perturbative analysis show that this symmetry must be preserved by the quantum corrections. As a complement we obtain that transversality of the polarization tensor does not fix the value of the coefficient of the induced CS term.

Control of state and state entanglement with a single auxiliary subsystem

We present a strategy to control the evolution of a quantum system. The novel aspect of this protocol is the use of a \emph{single auxiliary subsystem}. Two applications are given, one which allows for state preservation and another which controls the degree of entanglement of a given initial state.

Quantifying the decay of quantum properties in single-mode states

The dissipative dynamics of Gaussian squeezed states (GSS) and coherent superposition states (CSS) are analytically obtained and compared. Time scales for sustaining different quantum properties such as squeezing, negativity of the Wigner function or photon number distribution are calculated. Some of these characteristic times also depend on initial conditions. For example, in the particular case of squeezing, we find that while the squeezing of CSS is only visible for small enough values of the field intensity, in GSS it is independent of this quantity, which may be experimentally advantageous. The asymptotic dynamics however is quite similar as revealed by the time evolution of the fidelity between states of the two classes.

Incomplete Entanglement: consequences for the QZE

We show that the Quantum Zeno Effect prevails even if the entanglement with the measuring probe is not complete. The dynamics towards the asymptotic regime as a function of $N$, the number of measurements, reveals surprising results: the transition probability, for some values of the coupling to the measuring probe, may decrease much faster than the normal QZE.

Exciton BCS or BEC state in a semiconductor bilayer system?

We calculate the off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO) terms of the exciton--exciton correlation function of a semiconductor bilayer system with Coulomb interaction and a transverse magnetic field. We show that the formation of a BEC state is very sensitive to the width of the interaction in momentum space. This dependence is analytically derived and represents the key physical ingredient for the formation (or not) of an exciton condensate state.

Implicit regularization beyond one loop order: gauge field theories

We extend a constrained version of Implicit Regularization (CIR) beyond one loop order for gauge field theories. In this framework, the ultraviolet content of the model is displayed in terms of momentum loop integrals order by order in perturbation theory for any Feynman diagram, while the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identities are controlled by finite surface terms. To illustrate, we apply CIR to massless abelian Gauge Field Theories (scalar and spinorial QED) to two loop order and calculate the two-loop beta-function of the spinorial QED.
