Bosonic excitations and electron pairing in an electron-doped cuprate superconductor

Superconductivity originates from the coupling between charge carriers and bosonic excitations of either phononic or electronic origin. Identifying the most relevant pairing glue is a key step towards a clear understanding of the unconventional superconductivity. Here, by applying the ultrafast optical spectroscopy on the electron-doped cuprates La$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, we discern a bosonic mode of electronic origin that has the strongest coupling with the charge carriers near $T_c$. We argue that this mode is associated with the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, and can fully account for the superconducting pairing. Our work may help to establish a quantitative relation between bosonic excitations and superconducting pairing in electron-doped cuprates, and pave the way for systematic exploration of superconductivity and other collective phenomena in all correlated materials.

Unraveling photoinduced spin dynamics in topological insulator Bi2Se3

We report on time-resolved ultrafast optical spectroscopy study of the topological insulator (TI) Bi$_2$Se$_3$. We unravel that a net spin polarization can not only be generated using circularly polarized light via interband transitions between topological surface states (SSs), but also via transitions between SSs and bulk states. Our experiment demonstrates that tuning photon energy or temperature can essentially allow for photoexcitation of spin-polarized electrons to unoccupied topological SSs with two distinct spin relaxation times ($\sim$25 fs and $\sim$300 fs), depending on the coupling between SSs and bulk states. The intrinsic mechanism leading to such distinctive spin dynamics is the scattering in SSs and bulk states which is dominated by $E_g^2$ and $A_{1g}^1$ phonon modes, respectively. These findings are suggestive of novel ways to manipulate the photoinduced coherent spins in TIs.

Multiaperture $UBVRIzJHK$ Photometry of Galaxies in the Coma Cluster

We present a set of $UBVRIzJHK_s$ photometry for 745 $J+H$ band selected objects in a $22.5' \times 29.2'$ region centered on the core of the Coma cluster. This includes 516 galaxies and is at least 80% complete to H=16, with a spectroscopically complete sample of 111 cluster members (nearly all with morphological classification) for $H < 14.5$. For each object we present total \cite{kron80} magnitudes and aperture photometry. As an example, we use these data to derive color-magnitude relations for Coma early-type galaxies, measure the intrinsic scatter of these relations and its dependence on galaxy mass, and address the issue of color gradients. We find that the color gradients are mild and that the intrinsic scatter about the color-magnitude relation is small ($\sim 0.05$ mag in $U-V$ and less than $\sim 0.03$ in $B-R$, $V-I$ or $J-K$). There is no evidence that the intrinsic scatter varies with galaxy luminosity, suggesting that the cluster red sequence is established at early epochs over a range of $\sim 100$ in stellar mass.
