Coherent states on the Grassmannian $U(4)/U(2)^2$: Oscillator realization and bilayer fractional quantum Hall systems

Bilayer quantum Hall (BLQH) systems, which underlie a $U(4)$ symmetry, display unique quantum coherence effects. We study coherent states (CS) on the complex Grassmannian $\mathbb G_2^4=U(4)/U(2)^2$, orthonormal basis, $U(4)$ generators and their matrix elements in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal H_λ(\mathbb G_2^4)$ of analytic square-integrable holomorphic functions on $\mathbb G_2^4$, which carries a unitary irreducible representation of $U(4)$ with index $λ\in\mathbb N$. A many-body representation of the previous construction is introduced through an oscillator realization of the $U(4)$ Lie algebra generators in terms of eight boson operators. This particle picture allows us for a physical interpretation of our abstract mathematical construction in the BLQH jargon. In particular, the index $λ$ is related to the number of flux quanta bound to a bi-fermion in the composite fermion picture of Jain for fractions of the filling factor $ν=2$. The simpler, and better known, case of spin-$s$ CS on the Riemann-Bloch sphere $\mathbb{S}^2=U(2)/U(1)^2$ is also treated in parallel, of which Grassmannian $\mathbb G_2^4$-CS can be regarded as a generalized (matrix) version.

Coherent States of Accelerated Relativistic Quantum Particles, Vacuum Radiation and the Spontaneous Breakdown of the Conformal SU(2,2) Symmetry

We give a quantum mechanical description of accelerated relativistic particles in the framework of Coherent States (CS) of the (3+1)-dimensional conformal group SU(2,2), with the role of accelerations played by special conformal transformations and with the role of (proper) time translations played by dilations. The accelerated ground state $\tildeϕ_0$ of first quantization is a CS of the conformal group. We compute the distribution function giving the occupation number of each energy level in $\tildeϕ_0$ and, with it, the partition function Z, mean energy E and entropy S, which resemble that of an "Einstein Solid". An effective temperature T can be assigned to this "accelerated ensemble" through the thermodynamic expression dE/dS, which leads to a (non linear) relation between acceleration and temperature different from Unruh's (linear) formula. Then we construct the corresponding conformal-SU(2,2)-invariant second quantized theory and its spontaneous breakdown when selecting Poincaré-invariant degenerated θ-vacua (namely, coherent states of conformal zero modes). Special conformal transformations (accelerations) destabilize the Poincaré vacuum and make it to radiate.

Symmetry group of massive Yang-Mills theories without Higgs and their quantization

We analyze the symmetry group of massive Yang-Mills theories and their quantization strongly motivated by an already proposed alternative to the Standard Model of electroweak interactions without Higgs. In these models the mass generation of the intermediate vector bosons is based on a non-Abelian Stueckelberg mechanism where the dynamics of the Goldstone-like bosons is addressed by a partial-trace Non-Linear-Sigma piece of the Lagrangian. In spite of the high non-linearity of the scalar sector, the existence of an infinite number of symmetries, extending the traditional gauge group, allows us to sketch a group-theoretical quantization algorithm specially suited to non-linear systems, which departs from usual canonical quantization. On the quantum representation space of this extended symmetry group, a quantum Hamiltonian preserving the representation is given, whose classical analog reproduces the equations of motion.

Symmetries of Non-Linear Systems: Group Approach to their Quantization

We report briefly on an approach to quantum theory entirely based on symmetry grounds which improves Geometric Quantization in some respects and provides an alternative to the canonical framework. The present scheme, being typically non-perturbative, is primarily intended for non-linear systems, although needless to say that finding the basic symmetry associated with a given (quantum) physical problem is in general a difficult task, which many times nearly emulates the complexity of finding the actual (classical) solutions. Apart from some interesting examples related to the electromagnetic and gravitational particle interactions, where an algebraic version of the equivalence principle naturally arises, we attempt to the quantum description of non-linear sigma models. In particular, we present the actual quantization of the partial-trace non-linear SU(2) sigma model as a representative case of non-linear quantum field theory.

Extended MacMahon-Schwinger's Master Theorem and Conformal Wavelets in Complex Minkowski Space

We construct the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) on the homogeneous space (Cartan domain) D_4=SO(4,2)/(SO(4)\times SO(2)) of the conformal group SO(4,2) (locally isomorphic to SU(2,2)) in 1+3 dimensions. The manifold D_4 can be mapped one-to-one onto the future tube domain C^4_+ of the complex Minkowski space through a Cayley transformation, where other kind of (electromagnetic) wavelets have already been proposed in the literature. We study the unitary irreducible representations of the conformal group on the Hilbert spaces L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ) and L^2_h(C^4_+,d\tildeν_λ) of square integrable holomorphic functions with scale dimension λand continuous mass spectrum, prove the isomorphism (equivariance) between both Hilbert spaces, admissibility and tight-frame conditions, provide reconstruction formulas and orthonormal basis of homogeneous polynomials and discuss symmetry properties and the Euclidean limit of the proposed conformal wavelets. For that purpose, we firstly state and prove a λ-extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem (SMT), which turns out to be a useful mathematical tool for us, particularly as a generating function for the unitary-representation functions of the conformal group and for the derivation of the reproducing (Bergman) kernel of L^2_h(D_4,dν_λ). SMT is related to MacMahon's Master Theorem (MMT) and an extension of both in terms of Louck's SU(N) solid harmonics is also provided for completeness. Convergence conditions are also studied.

Non-Canonical Perturbation Theory of Non-Linear Sigma Models

We explore the O(N)-invariant Non-Linear Sigma Model (NLSM) in a different perturbative regime from the usual relativistic-free-field one, by using non-canonical basic commutation relations adapted to the underlying O(N) symmetry of the system, which also account for the non-trivial (non-flat) geometry and topology of the target manifold.

Conformal Spinning Quantum Particles in Complex Minkowski Space as Constrained Nonlinear Sigma Models in U(2,2) and Born's Reciprocity

We revise the use of 8-dimensional conformal, complex (Cartan) domains as a base for the construction of conformally invariant quantum (field) theory, either as phase or configuration spaces. We follow a gauge-invariant Lagrangian approach (of nonlinear sigma-model type) and use a generalized Dirac method for the quantization of constrained systems, which resembles in some aspects the standard approach to quantizing coadjoint orbits of a group G. Physical wave functions, Haar measures, orthonormal basis and reproducing (Bergman) kernels are explicitly calculated in and holomorphic picture in these Cartan domains for both scalar and spinning quantum particles. Similarities and differences with other results in the literature are also discussed and an extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem is commented in connection with closure relations. An adaptation of the Born's Reciprocity Principle (BRP) to the conformal relativity, the replacement of space-time by the 8-dimensional conformal domain at short distances and the existence of a maximal acceleration are also put forward.

A Quantizable Model of Massive Gauge Vector Bosons without Higgs

We incorporate the parameters of the gauge group G into the gauge theory of interactions through a non-linear partial-trace sigma-model Lagrangian on G/H. The minimal coupling of the new (Goldstone-like) scalar bosons provides mass terms to those intermediate vector bosons associated with the quotient G/H, without spoiling gauge invariance, remaining the H-vector potentials massless. The main virtue of a partial trace on G/H, rather than on the entire G, is that we can find an infinite-dimensional symmetry, with non-trivial Noether invariants, which ensures quantum integrability in a non-canonical quantization scheme. The present formalism is explicitly applied to the case G=SU(2)x U(1), as a Higgs-less alternative to the Standard Model of electroweak interactions, although it can also be used in low-energy phenomenological models for strong interactions.

Thermal Vacuum Radiation in Spontaneously Broken Second-Quantized Theories on Curved Phase Spaces of Constant Curvature

We construct second-quantized (field) theories on coset spaces of pseudo-unitary groups U(p,q)$. The existence of degenerated quantum vacua (coherent states of zero modes) leads to a breakdown of the original pseudo-unitary symmetry. The action of some spontaneously broken symmetry transformations destabilize the vacuum and make it to radiate. We study the structure of this thermal radiation for curved phase spaces of constant curvature: complex projective spaces CP^{N-1}=SU(N)/U(N-1) and open complex balls CD^{N-1}=SU(1,N-1)/U(N-1). Positive curvature is related to generalized Fermi-Dirac (FD) statistics, whereas negative curvature is connected with generalized Bose-Einstein (BE) statistics, the standard cases being recovered for N=2. We also make some comments on the contribution of the vacuum (dark) energy to the cosmological constant and the phenomenon of inflation.

Group-quantization of non-linear sigma models: particle on S^2 revisited

We present the quantum mechanics of "partial-trace" non-linear sigma models, on the grounds of a fully symmetry-based procedure. After the general scheme is sketched, the particular example of a particle on the two-sphere is explicitly developed. As a remarkable feature, no explicit constraint treatment is required nor ordering ambiguities do appear. Moreover, the energy spectrum is recovered without extra terms in the curvature of the sphere.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking: Higgs-less Mass Generation and Radiation Phenomena

Gauge symmetries generally appear as a constraint algebra, under which one expects all physical states to be singlets. However, quantum anomalies and boundary conditions introduce central charges and change this picture, thus causing gauge/diffeomorphism modes to become physical. We expose a cohomological (Higgs-less) generation of mass in U(N)-gauge invariant Yang-Mills theories through non-trivial representations of the gauge group. This situation is also present in black hole evaporation, where the Virasoro algebra turns out to be the relevant subalgebra of surface deformations of the horizon of an arbitrary black hole.

Modular Invariance on the Torus and Abelian Chern-Simons Theory

The implementation of modular invariance on the torus as a phase space at the quantum level is discussed in a group-theoretical framework. Unlike the classical case, at the quantum level some restrictions on the parameters of the theory should be imposed to ensure modular invariance. Two cases must be considered, depending on the cohomology class of the symplectic form on the torus. If it is of integer cohomology class $n$, then full modular invariance is achieved at the quantum level only for those wave functions on the torus which are periodic if $n$ is even, or antiperiodic if $n$ is odd. If the symplectic form is of rational cohomology class $\frac{n}{r}$, a similar result holds --the wave functions must be either periodic or antiperiodic on a torus $r$ times larger in both direccions, depending on the parity of $nr$. Application of these results to the Abelian Chern-Simons is discussed.

Higher-U(2,2)-spin fields and higher-dimensional W-gravities: quantum AdS space and radiation phenomena

A physical and geometrical interpretation of previously introduced tensor operator algebras of U(2,2) in terms of algebras of higher-conformal-spin quantum fields on the anti-de Sitter space AdS_5 is provided. These are higher-dimensional W-like algebras and constitute a potential gauge guide principle towards the formulation of induced conformal gravities (Wess-Zumino-Witten-like models) in realistic dimensions. Some remarks on quantum (Moyal) deformations are given and potentially tractable versions of noncommutative AdS spaces are also sketched. The role of conformal symmetry in the microscopic description of Unruh and Hawking's radiation effects is discussed.

Promoting finite to infinite symmetries: the 3+1-dimensional analogue of the Virasoro algebra and higher-spin fields

Infinite enlargements of finite pseudo-unitary symmetries are explicitly provided in this letter. The particular case of u(2,2)=so(4,2)+u(1) constitutes a (Virasoro-like) infinite-dimensional generalization of the 3+1-dimensional conformal symmetry, in addition to matter fields with all conformal spins. These algebras provide a new arena for integrable field models in higher dimensions; for example, Anti-de Sitter and conformal gauge theories of higher-so(4,2)-spin fields. A proposal for a non-commutative geometrical interpretation of space is also outlined.

Algebraic characterization of constraints and generation of mass in gauge theories

The possibility of non-trivial representations of the gauge group on wavefunctionals of a gauge invariant quantum field theory leads to a generation of mass for intermediate vector and tensor bosons. The mass parameters "m" show up as central charges in the algebra of constraints, which then become of second-class nature. The gauge group coordinates acquire dynamics outside the null-mass shell and provide the longitudinal field degrees of freedom that massless bosons need to form massive bosons.

Quantum Field Theory in a Symmetric Curved Space from a Second Quantization on a Group

In this article we propose a `second quantization' scheme especially suitable to deal with non-trivial, highly symmetric phase spaces, implemented within a more general Group Approach to Quantization, which recovers the standard Quantum Field Theory (QFT) for ordinary relativistic linear fields. We emphasize, among its main virtues, greater suitability in characterizing vacuum states in a QFT on a highly symmetric curved space-time and the absence of the usual requirement of global hyperbolicity. This can be achieved in the special case of the Anti-de Sitter universe, on which we explicitly construct a QFT.

Structure Constants for New Infinite-Dimensional Lie Algebras of U(N+,N-) Tensor Operators and Applications

The structure constants for Moyal brackets of an infinite basis of functions on the algebraic manifolds M of pseudo-unitary groups U(N_+,N_-) are provided. They generalize the Virasoro and W_\infty algebras to higher dimensions. The connection with volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on M, higher generalized-spin and tensor operator algebras of U(N_+,N_-) is discussed. These centrally-extended, infinite-dimensional Lie-algebras provide also the arena for non-linear integrable field theories in higher dimensions, residual gauge symmetries of higher-extended objects in the light-cone gauge and C^*-algebras for tractable non-commutative versions of symmetric curved spaces.

Gauge Transformation Properties of Vector and Tensor Potentials Revisited: a Group Quantization Approach

The possibility of non-trivial representations of the gauge group on wavefunctionals of a gauge invariant quantum field theory leads to a generation of mass for intermediate vector and tensor bosons. The mass parameters m show up as central charges in the algebra of constraints, which then become of second-class nature. The gauge group coordinates acquire dynamics outside the null-mass shell and provide the longitudinal field degrees of freedom that massless bosons need to form massive bosons. This is a `non-Higgs' mechanism that could provide new clues for the best understanding of the symmetry breaking mechanism in unified field theories. A unified quantization of massless and massive non-Abelian Yang-Mills, linear Gravity and Abelian two-form gauge field theories are fully developed from this new approach, where a cohomological origin of mass is pointed out.
