Vacuum solutions in the Einstein-Aether Theory

The Einstein-Aether (EA) theory belongs to a class of modified gravity theories characterized by the introduction of a time-like unit vector field, called aether. In this scenario, a preferred frame arises as a natural consequence of a broken Lorentz invariance. In the present work we have obtained and analyzed some exact solutions allowed by this theory for two particular cases of perfect fluid, both with Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) symmetry: (i) a fluid with constant energy density ($p=-ρ_0$), and (ii) a fluid with zero energy density ($ρ_0=0$), corresponding to the vacuum solution with and without cosmological constant ($Λ$), respectively. Our solutions show that the EA and GR theories do not differentiate each other only by the coupling constants. This difference is clearly shown because of the existence of singularities that there are not in GR theory. This characteristic appears in the solutions with $p=-ρ_0$ as well as with $ρ_0=0$, where this last one depends only on the aether field. Besides, we consider the term of the EA theory in the Raychaudhuri equation and discuss the meaning of the strong energy condition in this scenario and found that this depends on aether field. The solutions admit an expanding or contracting system. A bounce, a singular, a constant and an accelerated expansion solutions were also obtained, exhibiting the richness of the EA theory from the dynamic point of view of a collapsing system or of a cosmological model. The analysis of energy conditions, considering an effective fluid shows that the term of the aether contributes significantly for the accelerated expansion of the system for the case in which the energy density is constant. On the other hand, for the vacuum case ($ρ_0=0$), the energy conditions are all satisfied for the aether fluid.

J-PAS: The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey

The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) is a narrow band, very wide field Cosmological Survey to be carried out from the Javalambre Observatory in Spain with a purpose-built, dedicated 2.5m telescope and a 4.7 sq.deg. camera with 1.2Gpix. Starting in late 2015, J-PAS will observe 8500sq.deg. of Northern Sky and measure $0.003(1+z)$ photo-z for $9\times10^7$ LRG and ELG galaxies plus several million QSOs, sampling an effective volume of $\sim 14$ Gpc$^3$ up to $z=1.3$ and becoming the first radial BAO experiment to reach Stage IV. J-PAS will detect $7\times 10^5$ galaxy clusters and groups, setting constrains on Dark Energy which rival those obtained from its BAO measurements. Thanks to the superb characteristics of the site (seeing ~0.7 arcsec), J-PAS is expected to obtain a deep, sub-arcsec image of the Northern sky, which combined with its unique photo-z precision will produce one of the most powerful cosmological lensing surveys before the arrival of Euclid. J-PAS unprecedented spectral time domain information will enable a self-contained SN survey that, without the need for external spectroscopic follow-up, will detect, classify and measure $σ_z\sim 0.5\%$ redshifts for $\sim 4000$ SNeIa and $\sim 900$ core-collapse SNe. The key to the J-PAS potential is its innovative approach: a contiguous system of 54 filters with $145Å$ width, placed $100Å$ apart over a multi-degree FoV is a powerful "redshift machine", with the survey speed of a 4000 multiplexing low resolution spectrograph, but many times cheaper and much faster to build. The J-PAS camera is equivalent to a 4.7 sq.deg. "IFU" and it will produce a time-resolved, 3D image of the Northern Sky with a very wide range of Astrophysical applications in Galaxy Evolution, the nearby Universe and the study of resolved stellar populations.

Cosmology with Hu-Sawicki gravity in Palatini Formalism

Cosmological models based on f(R)-gravity may exhibit a natural acceleration mechanism without introducing a dark energy component. In this paper, we investigate cosmological consequences of the so-called Hu-Sawicki f(R)-gravity in the Palatini formalism. We derive theoretical constraints on the model parameters and perform a statistical analysis to determine the parametric space allowed by current observational data. We find that this class of models is indistinguishable from the standard ΛCDM model at the background level. Differently, from previous results in the metric approach, we show that these scenarios are able to produce the sequence of radiation-dominated, matter-dominated, and accelerating periods without need of dark energy.

Cosmological Consequences of Exponential Gravity in Palatini Formalism

We investigate cosmological consequences of a class of exponential $f(R)$ gravity in the Palatini formalism. By using the current largest type Ia Supernova sample along with determinations of the cosmic expansion at intermediary and high-$z$ we impose tight constraints on the model parameters. Differently from other $f(R)$ models, we find solutions of transient acceleration, in which the large-scale modification of gravity will drive the Universe to a new decelerated era in the future. We also show that a viable cosmological history with the usual matter-dominated era followed by an accelerating phase is predicted for some intervals of model parameters.
