The Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph: the green light for Galaxy Kinematics

Planetary nebulae are now well established as probes of galaxy dynamics and as standard candles in distance determinations. Motivated by the need to improve the efficiency of planetary nebulae searches and the speed with which their radial velocities are determined, a dedicated instrument - the Planetary Nebulae Spectrograph or PN.S - has been designed and commissioned at the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. The high optical efficiency of the spectrograph results in the detection of typically ~ 150 PN in galaxies at the distance of the Virgo cluster in one night of observations. In the same observation the radial velocities are obtained with an accuracy of ~ 20 km/s

Optical (VRI) Photometry in the Field of the Galaxy Cluster AC 118 at z=0.31

We present new photometric V-, R- and I-band data for the rich galaxy cluster AC 118 at z=0.31. The new photometry covers an area of 8.6x8.6 arcmin$^2$, corresponding to 2.9$\times$2.9 Mpc$^2$ (H$_0=50$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, q$_0=0.5$ and $Λ= 0$). The data have been collected for a project aimed at studying galaxy evolution through the color-magnitude relation and the fundamental plane. We provide a catalogue including all the sources (N = 1206) detected in the cluster field. The galaxy sample is complete to V=22.8 mag (N_gal=574), R=22.3 mag (N_gal=649) and I=20.8 mag (N_gal=419). We give aperture magnitudes within a fixed aperture of 4.4 arcsec and Kron magnitudes. We also give photometric redshifts for 459 sources for which additional U- and K-band photometry is available. We derive and discuss the V- and R-band luminosity functions. The catalogue, which is distributed in electronic form, is intended as a tool for studies in galaxy evolution.

Optical and Near-Infrared Structural Properties of Cluster Galaxies at $z \sim 0.3$

Structural parameters (half-light radius $r_e$, mean effective surface brightness $<μ>_e$, and Sersic index n) are derived for a sample of galaxies in the rich cluster AC 118 at z=0.31: so far the largest (N=93) sample of galaxies at intermediate-redshift with structural parameters measured in the near-infrared. The parameters are obtained in two optical wavebands (V and R) and in the K-band. The distributions of $r_e$ at z=0.31 match those for the Coma cluster both in the optical and in the NIR. The similarity of the two distributions proves that the galaxies at the bright end of the luminosity function did not significantly change their sizes since $z\sim0.3$ to the present epoch. The ratio of the optical to the NIR half-light radius shows a marked trend with the Sersic index n. In galaxies with $n\gtrsim4$ (typical bright ellipticals) $r_{e,NIR}\sim 0.6 r_{e,opt}$, while the average ratio is 0.8 for galaxies with lower n (typical disk systems). Moreover, the NIR Sersic index is systematically larger than in the optical for $n\lesssim4$. These results, translated into optical and optical-NIR color gradients, imply that the optical color gradients at $z\sim$0.3 are similar to those of nearby galaxies. The optical-NIR color gradients are larger, ranging from -0.73 mag/dex for $n\lesssim4$ to -0.35 mag/dex for $n\gtrsim4$. We discuss these results in terms of 'pure age' and 'pure metallicity' gradient models. The lack of any major change in $r_{e,NIR}$ since $z\sim0.3$ suggests that merging involving bright galaxies did not play a significant role in the last $\sim$4.4 Gyr.

NGC 1399: a complex dynamical case

Evidence for a disturbed velocity structure in the outer regions of the galaxy NGC1399 comes from a re-analysis of the planetary nebulae data from Arnaboldi et al. (1994). We find a strong rotation along a P.A.=140 degrees for R<=140'' which is followed by a rapid drop off at larger radii, where the velocity dispersion starts to increase. This kinematical behavior can be interpreted as an indication for an interaction scenario. Interaction is advocated in previous analysis of the halo regions of this system, based on different dynamical tracers such as globular clusters and X-rays, but in all these studies the mass distribution is derived under the equilibrium hypothesis, which is not appropriate when an interaction takes place. Here we attempt a non-equilibrium dynamical analysis of NGC1399: with a simple model and under the impulse approximation, we show that the observed kinematics is consistent with an energy injection caused by a flyby encounter of NGC 1399 with the nearby system NGC 1404. In this approach, we find a mass-to-light ratio, M/L_B=26 within R=400'', which is about half of that requested when equilibrium is assumed, i.e. M/L_B=56.

Microlensing search towards M31

We present the first results of the analysis of data collected during the 1998-99 observational campaign at the 1.3 meter McGraw-Hill Telescope, towards the Andromeda galaxy (M31), aimed to the detection of gravitational microlensing effects as a probe of the presence of dark matter in our and in M31 halo. The analysis is performed using the pixel lensing technique, which consists in the study of flux variations of unresolved sources and has been proposed and implemented by the AGAPE collaboration. We carry out a shape analysis by demanding that the detected flux variations be achromatic and compatible with a Paczynski light curve. We apply the Durbin-Watson hypothesis test to the residuals. Furthermore, we consider the background of variables sources. Finally five candidate microlensing events emerge from our selection. Comparing with the predictions of a Monte Carlo simulation, assuming a standard spherical model for the M31 and Galactic haloes, and typical values for the MACHO mass, we find that our events are only marginally consistent with the distribution of observable parameters predicted by the simulation.

Intracluster Planetary Nebulae in Virgo: Photometric selection, spectroscopic validation and cluster depth

We have imaged an empty area of 34'x34' one and a half degree north of the Virgo cluster core to survey for intracluster planetary nebula candidates. We have implemented and tested a fully automatic procedure for the selection of emission line objects in wide-field images, based on the on-off technique from Ciardullo and Jacoby. Freeman et al. have spectroscopically confirmed a sample of intracluster planetary nebulae in one Virgo field. We use the photometric and morphological properties of this sample to test our selection procedure. In our newly surveyed Virgo field, 75 objects were identified as best candidates for intracluster PNe. The luminosity function of the spectroscopically confirmed PNe shows a brighter cut-off than the planetary nebula luminosity function for the inner regions of M87. Such a brighter cut-off is also observed in the newly surveyed field and indicates a smaller distance modulus, implying that the front end of the Virgo cluster is closer to us by a significant amount: 14% closer (2.1 Mpc) than M87 for the spectroscopic field, using the PN luminosity function distance of 14.9 Mpc to M87, and 19% closer (2.8 Mpc) than M87 for the newly surveyed field. Independent distance indicators (Tully-Fisher relation for Virgo spirals and surface brightness fluctuations for Virgo ellipticals) agree with these findings. From these two Virgo cluster fields there is no evidence that the surface luminosity density for the diffuse stellar component in the cluster decreases with radius. The luminosity surface density of the diffuse stellar population is comparable to that of the galaxies.

Detection, photometry and slitless radial velocities of 535 planetary nebulae in the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 4697

We have detected 535 planetary nebulae (PNs) in NGC 4697, using the classic on-band, off-band filter technique with the Focal Reducer and Spectrograph (FORS) at the Cassegrain focus of the first 8-meter telescope unit of the ESO Very Large Telescope. From our photometry we have built the [O III] 5007 planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) of NGC 4697. It indicates a distance of 10.5 Mpc, substantially smaller than a previous estimate of 24 Mpc used in earlier dynamical studies. The PNLF also provides an estimate of the specific PN formation rate. Combining the information from on-band images with PN positions on dispersed, slitless grism images, we have obtained radial velocities for 531 of the 535 PNs. They provide kinematic information up to a distance of almost three effective radii from the nucleus. Some rotation is detected in the outer regions, but the rotation curve of this galaxy appears to drop beyond one effective radius. Assuming an isotropic velocity distribution, the velocity dispersion profile is consistent with no dark matter within three effective radii of the nucleus (however, some dark matter can be present if the velocity distribution is anisotropic). We obtain a blue mass-to-light ratio of 11. Earlier M/L ratios for NGC 4697 were too small, because of the too large distance used for their derivation.

Fitting planes to early-type galaxies: MIST for the determination of the Fundamental Plane

The present study deals with the problem of deriving the coefficients of the fundamental plane (FP) of early-type galaxies. We introduce statistical models of the FP and relative fitting methods: the MIST (Measurement errors and Intrinsic Scatter Three dimensional) fits. The MIST fits account for the measurement errors on the variables and their correlations as well as for the intrinsic scatter. We show that the lack of a model of the intrinsic scatter of the FP is the origin of the systematic differences between the various fitting methods. We also address the problem of estimating the uncertainties of the FP coefficients and determine a simple relation between the sample size and the expected accuracy of the coefficients. The present study leads to define a `minimum sample size' for a correct estimate of the uncertainties. For N < 30, both theoretical formulae and re-sampling techniques, like the bootstrap, do not give reliable estimates. The question of the 'universality' of the FP is addressed by applying the MIST fits to ten samples of cluster galaxies. The FP slopes are actually consistent between the different samples, but, due to the large uncertainties, they could also hide significant systematic differences. The feasibility of the measurement of the possible variations of the FP slopes as a function of redshift is also proved.

Discovery of 9 Ly alpha emitters at redshift z~3.1 using narrow-band imaging and VLT spectroscopy

Narrow-band imaging surveys aimed at detecting the faint emission from the 5007 [O III] line of intracluster planetary nebulae in Virgo also probe high redshift z=3.1 Ly alpha emitters. Here we report on the spectroscopic identification of 9 Ly alpha emitters at z=3.13, obtained with the FORS spectrograph at Unit 1 of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT UT1). The spectra of these high redshift objects show a narrow, isolated Ly alpha emission with very faint (frequently undetected) continuum, indicating a large equivalent width. No other features are visible in our spectra. Our Ly alpha emitters are quite similar to those found by Hu (1998), Cowie & Hu (1998) and Hu et al. (1998). Using simple population synthesis models, on the assumption that these sources are regions of star formation, we conclude that the nebulae are nearly optically thick and must have a very low dust content, in order to explain the high observed Ly alpha equivalent widths. For the cosmological and star formation parameters we adopted, the total stellar mass produced would seem to correspond to the formation of rather small galaxies, some of which are perhaps destined to merge. The implied star formation density in our sampled comoving volume is probably somewhat smaller than, but of the same order of magnitude as the star formation density at z=3 derived by other authors from Lyman-break galaxy surveys. This result agrees with the expectation that the Ly alpha emitters are a low-metallicity (or low-dust) tail in a distribution of star forming regions at high redshifts. Finally, the Ly alpha emitters may contribute as many H-ionizing photons as QSOs at z=3.

Extragalactic planetary nebulae as mass tracers: biases in the estimate of dynamical quantities

Planetary Nebulae (PNe) are very important kinematical tracers of the outer regions of early-type galaxies, where the integrated light techniques fail. Under ad hoc assumptions, they allow measurements of rotation velocity and velocity dispersion profile from descrete radial velocity fields. We present the results on the precision allowed by different set of radial velocity samples, discuss the hypotheses in the analysis of descrete velocity fields and their impact on the inferred kinematics of the stellar population.

Intracluster Planetary Nebulae in the Virgo Cluster

We briefly describe the properties of the confirmed spectroscopic sample of intracluster planetary nebulae recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. We find 23 bonafide intracluster planetary nebulae and 8 high redshift (z ~ 3.1) Lyalpha emitters identified by their broad asymmetric emission line.

Structure and kinematics of the peculiar galaxy NGC 128

This is a multiband photometric and spectroscopic study of the peculiar S0 galaxy NGC128. We present results from broad (B and R) and narrow band optical CCD photometry, near (NIR) and far (FIR) infrared observations, long slit spectroscopy, and Fabry-Perot interferometry (CIGALE). The peculiar peanut shape morphology of the galaxy is observed both at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. The stellar disk is thick and distorted (arc-bended), with a color asymmetry along the major axis due to the presence of a large amount of dust, estimated through NIR and FIR data of ~6x10^6 M_sun, in the region of interaction with the companion galaxy NGC127. The color maps are nearly uniform over the whole galaxy, but for the major axis asymmetry, and a small gradient toward the center indicating the presence of a redder disk-like component. The H_alpha image indeed reveals the existence of a tilted gaseous ``disk'' around the center, oriented with the major axis toward the companion galaxy NGC127. Long slit and CIGALE data confirm the presence of gas in a disk-like component counter-rotating and inclined approximately of 50 deg. to the line of sight. The mass of the gas disk in the inner region is ~2.7x10^4 M_sun. The stellar velocity field is cylindrical up to the last measured points of the derived rotation curves, while the velocity dispersion profiles are typical for an S0 galaxy, but for an extended constant behaviour along the minor axis.

The stellar dynamics and mass of NGC 1316 using the radial velocities of planetary nebulae

We present a study of the kinematics of the outer regions of the early-type galaxy NGC 1316, based on radial velocity measurements of 43 planetary nebulae as well as deep integrated-light absorption line spectra. The smoothed velocity field of NGC 1316 indicates fast rotation at a distance of 16 kpc, possibly associated with an elongated feature orthogonal to the inner dust lanes. The mean square stellar velocity is approximately independent of radius, and the estimated total mass of the system is 2.6 x 10^11 M_sun within a radius of 16 kpc, implying an integrated mass-to-light ratio of M/L_B = 8.

The Galactic globular cluster NGC 1851: its dynamical and evolutionary properties

We have completely mapped the globular cluster NGC 1851 with VI CCD photometry, obtaining a CMD for ca. 20500 stars. From the apparent luminosity of the HB we derive a distance modulus (m-M)o=15.44+/-0.20. The presence of 7 "supra-HB" stars is confirmed. Six of them are identified as evolved descendants from HB progenitors. Synthetic HR diagrams demonstrate that the problem of the HB morphology could be solved by assuming a bimodal efficiency of the mass loss along the RGB. We find evidence that the radial distribution of the blue HB stars is different from that of the red HB and SGB stars. The first measurement of the mean absolute I magnitude for 22 known RR Lyr variables ( =0.12+/-0.20 at [Fe/H]=-1.28), is given. We found 7 new RR Lyr candidates (6 ab type and 1 c type), lowering the ratio N(c)/N(ab) to 0.38. From a sample of 25 globular clusters (including NGC 1851) a new calibration for DV(bump,HB) as a function of metallicity is derived, and we find some evidence for an age-metallicity relation among GCs. We identify 13 blue straggler stars, which do not show any sign of variability. The blue stragglers are less concentrated than the SGB stars with similar magnitudes for r>80". Finally, a radial dependence of the LF, a sign of mass segregation, is found. Transforming the LF into a mass function and correcting for mass segregation by means of multi-mass King-Michie models, we find a global MF exponent x(0)=0.2+/-0.3.

The Luminosity and Mass Function of the Globular Cluster NGC1261

I-band CCD images of two large regions of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 1261 have been used to construct stellar luminosity functions (LF) for 14000 stars in three annuli from 1.4' from the cluster center to the tidal radius. The LFs extend to M_I~8 and tend to steepen from the inner to the outer annulus, in agreement with the predictions of the multimass King-Michie model that we have calculated for this cluster. The LFs have been transformed into mass functions. Once corrected for mass segregation the global mass function of NGC 1261 has a slope x_0=0.8+/-0.5

More evidence for an intracluster planetary nebulae population in the Virgo cluster

We surveyed a 50 sq arcmin region in the Virgo cluster core to search for intergalactic planetary nebulae, and found 11 candidates in the surveyed area. The measured fluxes of these unresolved sources are consistent with these objects being planetary nebulae from an intracluster population of stars. We compute the cumulative luminosity function of these 11 planetary nebula candidates. If we assume that they belong to the Virgo cluster, their cumulative luminosity function is in good agreement with planetary nebula luminosity function simulations. This comparison allows us to estimate the surface mass density of the intracluster stellar population at the surveyed field in the cluster core.
