Fermion Masses, Mixing Angles and Supersymmetric SO(10) Unification

We reanalyse the problem of fermion masses in supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified models. In the minimal model, both low energy Higgs doublets belong to the same {\bf{10}} representation of SO(10) implying the unification not only of the gauge but also of the third generation Yukawa couplings. These models predict large values of $\tanβ\sim 50$. In this paper we study the effects of departing from the minimal conditions in order to see if we can find models with a reduced value of $\tanβ$. In order to maintain predictability, however, we try to do this with the addition of only one new parameter. We still assume that the fermion masses arise from interactions of the spinor representations with a single ${\bf 10}$ representation, but this ${\bf 10}$ now only contains a part of the two light Higgs doublets. This enables us to introduce one new parameter $ω=λ_b/λ_t$. For values of $ω\ll 1$ we can in principle reduce the value of $\tanβ$. In fact, $ω$ is an overall factor which multiplies the down quark and charged lepton Yukawa matrices. Thus the theory is still highly constrained. We show that the first generation quark masses and the CP-violation parameter $ε_K$ yield strong constraints on the phenomenologically allowed models. In the end, we find that large values of $\tanβ$ are still preferred.

Higgs and Supersymmetric Particle Signals at the Infrared Fixed Point of the Top Quark Mass

We study the properties of the Higgs and supersymmetric particle spectrum associated with the infrared fixed point solution of the top quark mass in the MSSM. We concentrate on the possible detection of these particles, analysing the deviations from the Standard Model predictions for the leptonic and hadronic variables measured at LEP and for the decay rate $b\rightarrow sγ$. We consider the low and moderate $\tan β$ regime, and we study both, the cases of universal and non--universal soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at high energies. In the first case, for any given value of the top quark mass, the Higgs and sparticle spectra are completely determined as a function of two soft supersymmetry breaking parameters. In the case of non--universality, instead, the strong correlations between the sparticle masses are relaxed, allowing a richer structure for the precision data variables. We show, however, that the requirement that the low energy theory proceeds from a grand unified theory with a local symmetry group including $SU(5)$, strongly constrains the set of possible indirect experimental signatures. As a general feature, whenever a significant deviation from the Standard Model value of the precision data variables is predicted, a light sparticle, visible at LEP2, appears in the spectrum.

The Infrared Fixed Point of the Top Quark Mass and its Implications within the MSSM

We analyse the general features of the Higgs and supersymmetric particle spectrum associated with the infrared fixed point solution of the top quark mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We consider the constraints on the mass parameters, which are derived from the condition of a proper radiative electroweak symmetry breaking in the low and moderate $\tanβ$ regime. In the case of universal soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at the high energy scale, the radiative $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ breaking, together with the top quark Yukawa fixed point structure imply that, for any given value of the top quark mass, the Higgs and supersymmetric particle spectrum is fully determined as a function of only two supersymmetry breaking parameters. We show that, for the interesting range of top quark mass values $M_t\simeq 175\pm 10$ GeV, both a light chargino and a light stop may be present in the spectrum. In addition, for a given top quark mass, the infrared fixed point solution of the top quark Yukawa coupling minimizes the value of the lightest CP-even Higgs mass $m_h$. The resulting upper bounds on $m_h$ read $m_h \leq 90 \;(105) \;(120)$ GeV for $M_t \leq 165 \;(175) \;(185)$ GeV.

Soft Supersymmetry Breaking Parameters and Minimal SO(10) Unification

The minimal supersymmetric SO(10) model, in which not only the gauge but also the third generation fermion Yukawa couplings are unified, provides a simple and highly predictive theoretical scenario for the understanding of the origin of the low energy gauge interactions and fermion masses. In the framework of the MSSM, with universal soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at the grand unification scale, large values of the universal gaugino mass $M_{1/2}\geq 300$ GeV are needed in order to induce a proper breakdown of the electroweak symmetry. In addition, in order to obtain acceptable experimental values for both the pole bottom mass and the $b\rightarrow sγ$ decay rate, even larger values of the gaugino masses are required. The model is strongly constrained by theoretical and phenomenological requirements and a heavy top quark, with mass $M_t\geq 170$ GeV, is hard to accomodate within this scheme. However, we show that to accommodate a top quark mass $M_t\simeq180$ GeV, it is sufficient to relax the condition of universality of the scalar soft SUSY breaking parameters at the grand unification scale. Still, the requirement of a heavy top quark demands a very heavy squark spectrum, unless specific relations between the soft SUSY breaking parameters are fulfilled.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and Bottom-Top Yukawa Unification

The condition of unification of gauge couplings in the minimal supersymmetric standard model provides successful predictions for the weak mixing angle as a function of the strong gauge coupling and the supersymmetric threshold scale. In addition, in some scenarios, e.g.\ in the minimal SO(10) model, the tau lepton and the bottom and top quark Yukawa couplings unify at the grand unification scale. The condition of Yukawa unification leads naturally to large values of $\tanβ$, implying a proper top quark--bottom quark mass hierarchy. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of unification of the Yukawa couplings, in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model with (assumed) universal mass parameters at the unification scale and with radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry. We show that strong correlations between the parameters $μ_0$ and $M_{1/2}$ appear within this scheme. These correlations have relevant implications for the sparticle spectrum, which presents several characteristic features. In addition, we show that due to large corrections to the running bottom quark mass induced through the supersymmetry breaking sector of the theory, the predicted top quark mass and $\tanβ$ values are significantly lower than those previously estimated in the literature.

Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking and the Infrared Fixed Point of the Top Quark Mass

The infrared quasi fixed point solution for the top quark mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model explains in a natural way large values of the top quark mass and appears as a prediction in many interesting theoretical schemes. Moreover, as has been recently pointed out, for moderate values of $\tanβ$, in order to achieve gauge and bottom-tau Yukawa coupling unification, the top quark mass must be within $10 \%$ of its fixed point value. In this work we show that the convergence of the top quark mass to its fixed point value has relevant consequences for the (assumed) universal soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at the grand unification scale. In particular, we show that the low energy parameters do not depend on $A_0$ and $B_0$ but on the combination $δ= B_0 - A_0/2$. Hence, there is a reduction in the number of independent parameters. Most interesting, the radiative $SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ breaking condition implies strong correlations between the supersymmetric mass parameter $μ$ and the supersymmetry breaking parameters $δ$ and $M_{1/2}$ or $m_0$. These correlations, which become stronger for $\tanβ< 2$, may have some fundamental origin, which would imply the need of a reformulation of the naive fine tuning criteria.

Infrared Fixed Point Solution for the Top Quark Mass and Unification of Couplings in the MSSM

We analyze the implications of the infrared quasi fixed point solution for the top quark mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. This solution could explain in a natural way the relatively large value of the top quark mass and, if confirmed experimentally, may be suggestive of the onset of nonperturbative physics at very high energy scales. In the framework of grand unification, the expected bottom quark - tau lepton Yukawa coupling unification is very sensitive to the fixed point structure of the top quark mass. For the presently allowed values of the electroweak parameters and the bottom quark mass, the Yukawa coupling unification implies that the top quark mass must be within ten percent of its fixed point values.

The $τ$ neutrino as a Majorana particle

A Majorana mass term for the $τ$ neutrino would induce neutrino - antineutrino mixing and thereby a process which violates fermion number by two units. We study the possibility of distinguishing between a massive Majorana and a Dirac $τ$ neutrino, by measuring fermion number violating processes in a deep inelastic scattering experiment $νp \rightarrow τX$. We show that, if the neutrino beam is obtained from the decay of high energetic pions, the probability of obtaining "wrong sign" $τ$ leptons is suppressed by a factor ${\cal{O}}(m_{ν_τ}^2 θ^2/m_μ^2)$ instead of the naively expected suppression factor $θ^2 m_{ν_τ}^2/E_ν^2$, where $E_ν$ is the $τ$ neutrino energy, $m_{ν_τ}$ and $m_μ$ are the $τ$-neutrino and muon masses, respectively, and $θ$ is the $ν_μ$ - $ν_τ$ mixing angle. If $m_{ν_τ}$ is of the order of 10 MeV and $θ$ is of the order of $0.01 - 0.04$ (the present bounds are ($m_{ν_τ} < 35 MeV, θ< 0.04$) the next round of experiments may be able to distinguish between Majorana and Dirac $τ$-neutrinos.

Unification of Couplings and the Top Quark Sector in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

I analyze the predictions for the strong gauge coupling, $α_3(M_Z) $, and the top quark and light Higgs masses in the framework of gauge and bottom-tau Yukawa coupling unification in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. These predictions depend on the effective supersymmetric threshold scale $T_{SUSY}$, which is only very slightly dependent on the squark and slepton masses, and strongly dependent on the Higgsino masses as well as on the mass ratio of the gauginos of the strong and weak interactions. Within the minimal supersymmetry breaking scheme and for supersymmetric masses below or of the order of 1 TeV, I obtain $α_3(M_Z) \geq 0.116$, while, if the running bottom quark mass at the physical mass is constrained to be $ m_b(M_b) \leq 4.1 $GeV, then, for moderate values of $\tan β$, perturbative unification is achieved only if $α_3(M_Z) \leq 0.124$. Unification of gauge and bottom-tau Yukawa couplings yield predictions for the top quark mass, 140 GeV $\leq M_t \leq 210 $ GeV for $1 \leq \tan β\leq 30$, which are remarkably close to the infrared quasi fixed point values for this quantity. For the light Higgs mass I obtain $m_h \leq 130(165)$ GeV if the characteristic squark mass is below 1 (10) TeV.

Light Gluinos and Unification of Couplings

We analyze the implications of the light gluino scenario for the unification of gauge and Yukawa couplings within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Within this scheme all fermionic supersymmetric particles are naturally light, while the scalar partners of quarks and leptons, together with the heavy Higgs doublet may be heavy. This implies both a bound on $\tanβ< 2.3$, in order to fulfill the experimental constraints on the chargino masses, and a strong correlation between $\sin^2θ_W(M_Z)$ and $α_3(M_Z)$, due to the suppression of the supersymmetric threshold corrections to the low energy values of the gauge couplings. Assuming the scalar sparticles to be lighter than 10 TeV, the physical top quark mass is constrained to be 145 GeV $< M_T <$ 210 GeV for $\tanβ>1$, while the strong gauge coupling values, $0.122\leqα_3(M_Z) \leq 0.133$, are in good agreement with the measured LEP ones. We also show that a relaxation of some of the conventional assumptions is necessary in order to achieve radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry within the grand unification scheme.

On the Unification of Couplings in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

The unification of gauge and Yukawa couplings within the minimal supersymmetric standard model is studied at the two loop level. We derive an expression for the effective scale, $T_{SUSY}$, which characterizes the supersymmetric particle threshold corrections to the gauge couplings, and demonstrate that $T_{SUSY}$ is only slightly dependent on the squark and slepton masses, and strongly dependent on the Higgsino masses as well as on the mass ratio of the gauginos of the strong and weak interactions. Moreover, the value of the top quark Yukawa coupling necessary to achieve the unification of bottom and tau Yukawa couplings is also governed by $T_{SUSY}$, and it yields predictions for the top quark mass which are close to the quasi infrared fixed point results associated with the triviality bounds on this quantity. From the requirement of perturbative consistency of the top quark Yukawa sector of the theory, we obtain constraints on the allowed splitting of the supersymmetric spectrum, which, for certain values of the running bottom quark mass, are stronger than those ones coming from the experimental constraints on the strong gauge coupling.

On the Finite Temperature Effective Potential in Scalar QED with N Flavors

The effective potential of scalar quantum electrodynamics with N flavors of complex scalar fields is studied, by performing a self consistent 1/N expansion up to next to leading order in $1/N$. Starting from the broken phase at zero temperature, the theory exhibits a phase transition to the symmetric phase at some finite temperature $T_c$. We work in general covariant gauges and demonstrate the gauge invariance of both, the critical temperature $T_c$ and the minimization condition at any finite temperature T. Furthermore, the only minimum of the potential is at zero scalar vacuum expectation value for any temperature $T \geq T_c$ and varies continuously to nonzero values for temperatures below $T_c$, implying the existence of a second order phase transition.
