Kaonic 3He and 4He X-ray measurements in SIDDHARTA

The strong-interaction shift of kaonic 3He and 4He 2p states was measured using gaseous targets for the first time in the SIDDHARTA experiment. The determined shift of kaonic 4He is much smaller than the values obtained in the experiments performed in 70's and 80's. Thus, the problems in kaonic helium (the "kaonic helium puzzle") was definitely solved by our measurements. The first observation of the kaonic 3He X-rays was also achieved. The shift both of kaonic 3He and 4He was found to be as small as a few eV.

A New Measurement of Kaonic Hydrogen X rays

The $\bar{K}N$ system at threshold is a sensitive testing ground for low energy QCD, especially for the explicit chiral symmetry breaking. Therefore, we have measured the $K$-series x rays of kaonic hydrogen atoms at the DA$Φ$NE electron-positron collider of Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, and have determined the most precise values of the strong-interaction energy-level shift and width of the $1s$ atomic state. As x-ray detectors, we used large-area silicon drift detectors having excellent energy and timing resolution, which were developed especially for the SIDDHARTA experiment. The shift and width were determined to be $ε_{1s} = -283 \pm 36 \pm 6 {(syst)}$ eV and $Γ_{1s} = 541 \pm 89 {(stat)} \pm 22 {(syst)}$ eV, respectively. The new values will provide vital constraints on the theoretical description of the low-energy $\bar{K}N$ interaction.

First measurement of kaonic helium-3 X-rays

The first observation of the kaonic 3He 3d - 2p transition was made using slow K- mesons stopped in a gaseous 3He target. The kaonic atom X-rays were detected with large-area silicon drift detectors using the timing information of the K+K- pairs of phi-meson decays produced by the DAFNE e+e- collider. The strong interaction shift of the kaonic 3He 2p state was determined to be -2+-2 (stat)+-4 (syst) eV.

Measurement of the in-medium K0 inclusive cross section in pi- -induced reactions at 1.15 GeV/c

The K0 meson production by pi- mesons of 1.15 GeV/c momentum on C, Al, Cu, Sn and Pb nuclear targets was measured with the FOPI spectrometer at the SIS accelerator of GSI. Inclusive production cross-sections and the momentum distributions of K0 mesons are compared to scaled elementary production cross-sections and to predictions of theoretical models describing the in-medium production of kaons. The data represent a new reference for those models, which are widely used for interpretation of the strangeness-production in heavy-ion collisions. The presented results demonstrate the sensitivity of the kaon production to the reaction amplitudes inside nuclei and point to the existence of a repulsive KN-potential of 20+-5 MeV at normal nuclear matter density.

New experimental limit on Pauli Exclusion Principle violation by electrons (the VIP experiment)

The Pauli Exclusion Principle is one of the basic principles of modern physics and is at the very basis of our understanding of matter: thus it is fundamental importance to test the limits of its validity. Here we present the VIP (Violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle) experiment, where we search for anomalous X-rays emitted by copper atoms in a conductor: any detection of these anomalous X-rays would mark a Pauli-forbidden transition. ] VIP is currently taking data at the Gran Sasso underground laboratories, and its scientific goal is to improve by at least four orders of magnitude the previous limit on the probability of Pauli violating transitions, bringing it into the 10**-29 - 10**-30 region. First experimental results, together with future plans, are presented.

Precision measurement of the $3d \to 2p$ x-ray energy in kaonic $^4$He

We have measured the Balmer-series x-rays of kaonic $^4$He atoms using novel large-area silicon drift x-ray detectors in order to study the low-energy $\bar{K}$-nucleus strong interaction. The energy of the $3d \to 2p$ transition was determined to be 6467 $\pm$ 3 (stat) $\pm$ 2 (syst) eV. The resulting strong-interaction energy-level shift is in agreement with theoretical calculations, thus eliminating a long-standing discrepancy between theory and experiment.

New experimental limit on Pauli Exclusion Principle violation by electrons (the VIP experiment)

The Pauli exclusion principle (PEP) represents one of the basic principles of modern physics and, even if there are no compelling reasons to doubt its validity, it still spurs a lively debate, because an intuitive, elementary explanation is still missing, and because of its unique stand among the basic symmetries of physics. A new limit on the probability that PEP is violated by electrons was estabilished by the VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle) Collaboration, using the method of searching for PEP forbidden atomic transitions in copper. The preliminary value, ${1/2}β^{2} \textless 4.5\times 10^{-28}$, represents an improvement of about two orders of magnitude of the previous limit. The goal of VIP is to push this limit at the level of $10^{-30}$.

VIP: An Experiment to Search for a Violation of the Pauli Exclusion Principle

The Pauli Exclusion Principle is a basic principle of Quantum Mechanics, and its validity has never been seriously challenged. However, given its fundamental standing, it is very important to check it as thoroughly as possible. Here we describe the VIP (VIolation of the Pauli exclusion principle) experiment, an improved version of the Ramberg and Snow experiment (E. Ramberg and G. Snow, {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 238}, 438 (1990)); VIP has just completed the installation at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory, and aims to test the Pauli Exclusion Principle for electrons with unprecedented accuracy, down to $β^2/2 \approx 10^{-30} - 10^{-31}$. We report preliminary experimental results and briefly discuss some of the implications of a possible violation.

On kaonic deuterium. Quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant approach

We study kaonic deuterium, the bound K^-d state A_(K d). Within a quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant approach we derive the energy level displacement of the ground state of kaonic deuterium in terms of the amplitude of K^-d scattering for arbitrary relative momenta. Near threshold our formula reduces to the well-known DGBT formula. The S-wave amplitude of K^-d scattering near threshold is defined by the resonances Lambda(1405), Sigma(1750) and a smooth elastic background, and the inelastic channels K^- d -> NY and K^- d -> NY pion, with Y = Sigma^(+/-), Sigma^0 and Lambda^0, where the final-state interactions play an important role. The Ericson-Weise formula for the S-wave scattering length of K^-d scattering is derived. The total width of the energy level of the ground state of kaonic deuterium is estimated using the theoretical predictions of the partial widths of the two-body decays A_(Kd) -> NY and experimental data on the rates of the NY-pair production in the reactions K^-d -> NY. We obtain Gamma_{1s} = (630 +/-100) eV. For the shift of the energy level of the ground state of kaonic deuterium we predict epsilon_(1s) = (353 +/-60)eV.

On kaonic hydrogen. Phenomenological quantum field theoretic model revisited

We argue that due to isospin and U-spin invariance of strong low-energy interactions the S-wave scattering lengths a^0_0 and a^1_0 of bar-KN scattering with isospin I=0 and I = 1 satisfy the low-energy theorem a^0_0 + 3 a^1_0 = 0 valid to leading order in chiral expansion. In the model of strong low-energy bar-KN interactions at threshold (EPJA 21,11 (2004)) we revisit the contribution of the Sigma(1750) resonance, which does not saturate the low-energy theorem a^0_0 + 3 a^1_0 = 0, and replace it by the baryon background with properties of an SU(3) octet. We calculate the S-wave scattering amplitudes of K^-N and K^-d scattering at threshold. We calculate the energy level displacements of the ground states of kaonic hydrogen and kaonic deuterium. The result obtained for kaonic hydrogen agrees well with recent experimental data by the DEAR Collaboration. We analyse the cross sections for elastic and inelastic K^-p scattering for laboratory momenta of the incident K^- meson from the domain 70 MeV/c < p_K < 150 MeV/c. The theoretical results agree with the available experimental data within two standard deviations.

Recent Theoretical Studies on Hadronic Atoms

A report contains a review of recent theoretical investigations on kaonic atoms carried out at Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. We discuss (1) a phenomenological quantum field theoretic model for bar-K N interactions at threshold of the reactions K^-p -> K^-p, K^-n -> K^-n and K^-d ->K^-d, and (2) the energy level displacements of the ground and nP excited states of kaonic hydrogen, (3) the contribution of the sigma-term to the shift of the energy level of the ground state of kaonic hydrogen, (4) the isospin-breaking and dispersive corrections to the energy level displacement of the ground state of kaonic hydrogen, (5) the radiative transitions nP -> 1S + γ, induced by strong low-energy interactions and enhanced by the Coulomb interaction, in kaonic hydrogen and kaonic deuterium, (6) Perspectives and (7) Comments on the approach, where we adduce our recent results obtained after the Workshop EXA05.

Energy level displacement of excited np states of kaonic hydrogen

We compute the energy level displacement of the excited np states of kaonic hydrogen within the quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant model of strong low-energy bar-KN interactions suggested in EPJA21, 11 (2004). For the width of the energy level of the excited 2p state of kaonic hydrogen, caused by strong low-energy interactions, we find Gamma_2p = 2 meV. This result is important for the theoretical analysis of the X-ray yields in kaonic hydrogen.

On isospin-breaking corrections to the energy level displacement of the ground state of kaonic hydrogen

In the model of low-energy bar-K N interactions near threshold (EPJA 21, 11 (2004); 25, 79 (2005)) we calculate isospin-breaking corrections to the energy level displacement of the ground state of kaonic hydrogen, investigated by Meissner, Raha and Rusetsky (EPJC 35, 349 (2004)) within the non-relativistic effective Lagrangian approach based on ChPT by Gasser and Leutwyler. Our results agree well with those by Meißner et al.. In addition we calculate the dispersive corrections, caused by the transition K^-p -> bar-K^0n ->K^-p with the bar-K^0n pair on-mass shell. We show also how hypothesis on the dominant role of the bar-K^0n-cusp for the S-wave amplitude of low-energy K^-p scattering near threshold, used by Meissner et al., can be realized in our approach. The result agrees fully with that by Meissner et al..

Quantum field theoretic model of metastable resonant spin-singlet state of the np pair

The np pair in the spin-singlet state is treated as a Cooper np-pair within the extension of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei, describing the deuteron as a Cooper np-pair in the spin-triplet state. For the Cooper np-pair in the spin-singlet state we compute the binding energy and express the S-wave scattering length of np scattering in the spin-singlet state in terms of the binding energy. The theoretical value of the S-wave scattering length of np scattering agrees well with the experimental data.

From Solar Proton Burning to Pionic Deuterium through the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei

Within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model of light nuclei (the NNJL model), describing strong low-energy nuclear interactions, we compute the width of the energy level of the ground state of pionic deuterium. The theoretical value fits well the experimental data. Using the cross sections for the reactions nu_e + d -> p + p + e^- and nu_e + d -> p + n + nu_e, computed in the NNJL model, and the experimental values of the events of these reactions, detected by the SNO Collaboration, we compute the boron neutrino fluxes. The theoretical values agree well with the experimental data and the theoretical predictions within the Standard Solar Model by Bahcall. We argue the applicability of the constraints on the astrophysical factor for the solar proton burning, imposed by helioseismology, to the width of the energy level of the ground state of pionic deuterium. We show that the experimental data on the width satisfy these constraints. This testifies an indirect measurement of the recommended value of the astrophysical factor for the solar proton burning in terrestrial laboratories in terms of the width of the energy level of the ground state of pionic deuterium.

On kaonic hydrogen. Quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant approach

We study kaonic hydrogen, the bound K^-p state A_(Kp). Within a quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant approach we derive the energy level displacement of the ground state of kaonic hydrogen in terms of the amplitude of K^-p scattering for arbitrary relative momenta. The amplitude of low-energy K^-p scattering near threshold is defined by the contributions of three resonances Lambda(1405), Lambda(1800) and Sigma^0(1750) and a smooth elastic background. The amplitudes of inelastic channels of low-energy K^-p scattering fit experimental data on near threshold behaviour of the cross sections and the experimental data by the DEAR Collaboration. We use the soft-pion technique (leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory) for the calculation of the partial width of the radiative decay of pionic hydrogen A_(pi p) -> n + gamma and the Panofsky ratio. The theoretical prediction for the Panofsky ratio agrees well with experimental data. We apply the soft-kaon technique (leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory) to the calculation of the partial widths of radiative decays of kaonic hydrogen A_(Kp) -> Lambda^0 + gamma and A_(Kp) -> Sigma^0 + gamma. We show that the contribution of these decays to the width of the energy level of the ground state of kaonic hydrogen is less than 1%.
