Heavy elements abundances in turn-off stars and early subgiants in NGC 6752

High resolution spectra (R > 40 000) for 9 main sequence turn-off stars and 9 subgiants in the globular cluster NGC 6752 were acquired with UVES on the VLT-Kueyen (UT2). These data have been used to determine the abundances of some heavy elements (strontium, yttrium, barium and europium). This paper presents for the first time accurate results for heavy elements in this globular cluster. We did not find any systematic effect between the abundances found in turn-off stars, subgiants, and giants. We obtain the following mean abundances for these elements in our sample (turn-off stars and subgiants): [Sr/Fe] = 0.06 +/- 0.16, [Y/Fe] = -0.01 +/- 0.12, [Ba/Fe] = 0.18 +/- 0.11, and [Eu/Fe] = 0.41 +/- 0.09. The dispersion in the abundance ratios of the different elements is low and can be totally explained by uncertainties in their derivation. These ratios are in agreement with the values found in field halo stars with the same metallicity. We did not observe any correlation between the [n-capture/Fe] ratios and the star-to-star variations of the O and Na abundances. The [Ba/Eu] and [Sr/Ba] ratios show clearly that this globular cluster has also been uniformly enriched by r- and s-process synthesis.

Nitrogen Abundances in High-z DLAs

Determination of chemical abundances for elements produced mainly by Type I SNae and intermediate mass stars in high redshift DLAs probes the early chemical build-up on time-scales comparable with their production. Nitrogen shows a peculiar behaviour never detected before in any other class of objects. For [N/H] < -3 there is a plateau with [N/Si]= -1.45(\pm 0.05). We interpret this as empirical evidence for primary N production by massive stars in young systems where AGB stars have not yet had time to make their contribution. The plateau provides the observational integrated yields for N production by massive stars which are theoretically rather uncertain. High N/Si and solar [alpha/iron-peak] ratios are observed at high redshift and place at an earlier epoch the onset of star formation. On the other hand, low N/Si, i.e. young objects, are observed also at relatively low redshifts. These evidences suggest that DLAs started to be formed at a very early epoch but their formation has been extended up to later times.

Early stages of Nitrogen enrichment in galaxies: Clues from measurements in damped Lyman alpha systems

We present 4 new measurements of nitrogen abundances and one upper limit in damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) obtained by means of high resolution (FWHM \~ 7 km/s) UVES/VLT spectra. In addition to these measurements we have compiled data from all DLAs with measurements of nitrogen and alpha-capture elements (O, S or Si) available in the literature, including all HIRES/Keck and UVES/VLT data for a total of 33 systems, i.e. the largest sample investigated so far. We find that [N/alpha] ratios are distributed in two groups: 75% of the DLAs show a mean value of [N/alpha] = -0.87 with a scatter of 0.16 dex, while the remaining 25% shows ratios clustered at [N/alpha] = -1.45 with an even lower dispersion of 0.05 dex. The high [N/alpha] plateau is consistent with the one observed in metal-poor HII regions of blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies ([N/alpha] = -0.73 +/- 0.13), while the [N/alpha] ~ -1.5 values are the lowest ever observed in any astrophysical site. These low [N/alpha] ratios are real and not due to ionization effects. They provide a crucial evidence against the primary production of N by massive stars as responsible for the plateau at -0.9/-0.7 dex observed in DLAs and BCD galaxies. The transition between the low-N ([N/alpha] ~ -1.5) and high-N ([N/alpha] ~ -0.9) DLAs occurs at a nitrogen abundance of [N/H] ~ -2.8, suggesting that the separation may result from some peculiarity of the nitrogen enrichment history. The [N/alpha] ~ -1.5 values and their low dispersion are consistent with a modest production of primary N in massive stars; however, due to the limited sample, specially for the low-N DLAs, we cannot exclude a primary origin in intermediate mass stars as responsible for the low N abundances observed.

Extremely metal-poor Lyman limit system at z = 2.917 toward the quasar HE 0940-1050

We report on detailed Monte Carlo inversion analysis of the Lyman limit system observed at z = 2.917 in the VLT/UVES spectrum of the quasar HE 0940-1050. Metal absorption lines of carbon and silicon in three ionization stages and numerous atomic hydrogen lines have been analyzed simultaneously. It is found that in order to match the observations, the shape of the ultraviolet background ionizing spectrum of Haardt & Madau (1996) should be modified: a spectrum with a higher intensity of the emission feature at 3 Ryd is required. It is also found that synthetic galactic spectra (or different mixtures of them with power law spectra) cannot reproduce the observations, indicating that the stellar contribution to the ionizing background is negligible at z ~= 3. For the first time a very low carbon abundance of [C/H] = -2.93+/-0.13 and the abundance ratio [Si/C] = 0.35+/-0.15 are directly measured in the Lyman limit system with N(H I) = 3.2 10^{17} cm^{-2}. If the absorber at z = 2.917 provides an example of a pristine gas enriched by the nucleosynthetic products of early generations of stars, then the measured value of [Si/C] seems to indicate that the initial mass functions for these stellar populations are constrained to intermediate masses, M_up <= 25M_solar.

The lithium content of the globular cluster NGC 6397

We make use of high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 12 turn-off stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397 to measure its lithium content. We conclude that they all have the same lithium abundance A(Li) = 2.34 with a standard deviation of 0.056 dex. We use this result, together with Monte Carlo simulations, to estimate that the maximum allowed intrinsic scatter is of the order of 0.035 dex. This is a new stringent constraint to be fulfilled by stellar models which predict Li depletion. We argue that although a mild depletion of 0.1 -- 0.2 dex, as predicted by recent models, cannot be ruled out, there is no compelling reason for it. This fact, together with the good agreement with the Li abundance observed in field stars, supports the primordial origin of lithium in metal-poor stars. Taking the above value as the primordial lithium abundance implies a cosmic baryonic density which is either Omega_b h^2 = 0.016 +/- 0.004 or Omega_b h^2 = 0.005 ^{+0.0026}_{-0.0006}, from the predictions of standard big bang nucleosynthesis. The high baryonic density solution is in agreement with recent results on the primordial abundance of deuterium and 3He and on the estimates derived from the fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background.

Metal abundances and kinematics of quasar absorbers.- I. Absorption systems toward J2233-606

The metal line profiles of different ions observed in high HI column density systems [N(HI) > 10^{16} cm^{-2}] in quasar spectra can be used to constrain the ionization structure and kinematic characteristics of the absorbers. For these purposes, a modified Monte Carlo Inversion (MCI) procedure was applied to the study of three absorption systems in the spectrum of the HDF-South quasar J2233-606 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. The MCI does not confirm variations of metal abundances within separate systems which were discussed in the literature. Instead, we found that an assumption of a homogeneous metal content and a unique photoionizing background is sufficient to describe the observed complex metal profiles. It was also found that the linear size L and the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v measured within the absorbers obey a scaling relation, namely, sigma_v increases with increasing L, and that metal abundance is inversely proportional to the linear size of the system: the highest metallicity was measured in the system with the smallest L.

An astrophysical oscillator strength for the SII 94.7 nm resonance line and S abundances in DLAs

By using UV spectra for the O star HD 93521 taken with the ORFEUS II echelle spectrograph, we determine an ``astrophysical'' f value for the SII 94.7 nm line: f = 0.00498 (+0.00172)(-0.00138), error at 1 sigma level. This is almost a factor of 30 smaller than the guessed value found in the Kurucz database (f=0.1472), which was up to now the only one available for this transition. We use our ``astrophysical'' f to investigate the S abundance in two Damped Ly-alpha absorption systems (DLAs) observed with UVES at the ESO 8.2m Kueyen telescope. In the case of the absorber at zabs=3.02486 towards QSO 0347-3819 we find a sulphur column density which is consistent, within errors, with that determined by Centurion et al by means of the 125.9 nm line, thus providing an external check on the accuracy of our f value. For the damped absorber at zabs=4.4680 towards BR J0307-4945 we determine a high value of the S abundance, which, however, is probably the result of blending with Ly-alpha forest lines.

VLT/Uves Observations of the Dla at Z=3.39 towards QSO 0000-2621

UVES observations at ESO/VLT of the DLA at z=3.39 towards QSO 0000-2621 provided refined abundances for Fe, Si, N, Ni, and new abundances for O, Ar, P, Zn, Cr, H2. These determinations confirm that the system has remarkable properties with the lowest metallicity, a very low H2 molecular fraction and it has no detectable presence of dust. The [alpha/Fe-peak] ratio is ~ 0.1 challenging current models of chemical evolution. The O/Ar and O/S ratios are the same as those observed in BCGs, suggesting a universal IMF.

The O-Na and Mg-Al Anticorrelations in Turn-Off and early Subgiants in Globular Clusters

High dispersion spectra (R>40,000) for a quite large number of stars at the main sequence turn-off and at the base of the subgiant branch in NGC6397 and NGC6752 were obtained with the UVES on Kueyen (VLT UT2). The [Fe/H] values we found are -2.03+/-0.02+/-0.04 and -1.42+/-0.02+/-0.04 for NGC6397 and NGC6752 respectively, where the first error bars refer to internal errors and the second ones to systematic errors. In both clusters the [Fe/H] obtained for TO-stars agree perfectly (within a few per cents) with that obtained for stars at the base of the RGB. The [O/Fe]=0.21+/-0.05 value we obtain for NGC6397 is quite low, but it agrees with previous results obtained for giants in this cluster; also, the star-to-star scatter in both O and Fe is very small, indicating that this small mass cluster is chemically very homogenous. On the other side, our results show clearly and for the first time that the O-Na anticorrelation (up to now seen only for stars on the red giant branches of globular clusters) is present among unevolved stars in the globular cluster NGC6752, a more massive cluster than NGC6397. A similar anticorrelation is present also for Mg and Al, and C and N. It is very difficult to explain the observed Na-O, and Mg-Al anticorrelation in NGC6752 stars by a deep mixing scenario; we think it requires some non internal mechanism.

Molecular hydrogen abundance in the dust-free damped Ly-alpha galaxy at z = 3.4

New results from the search for H2 absorption in the damped Ly-alpha galaxy at redshift z = 3.4 toward QSO 0000-2620 (z_em = 4.1) are reported. The high-resolution (lambda/Delta lambda = 48,000) spectra of Q0000-2620 were obtained using the Ultraviolet - Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the 8.2m ESO Kueyen telescope. The ortho-H2 column density is found to be N(J=1) = (5.55 +/- 1.35) 10^{13} cm^{-2} (2sigma C.L.). The combination of N(J=1) with the limits available for other low rotational levels restricts the excitation temperature T_ex in the range (290-540) K. This gives the total H2 column density of N(H2) = (8.75 +/- 1.25) 10^{13} cm^{-2} and the corresponding fraction of hydrogen atoms bound in molecules of f(H2) = (6.8 +/- 2.0) 10^{-8}.

UVES observations of QSO 0000-2620: Molecular hydrogen abundance in the damped Ly-alpha system at z_abs = 3.3901

We have discovered molecular hydrogen in a fourth quasar damped Ly-alpha system (hereafter DLA). The UVES spectrograph on the 8.2m ESO Kueyen telescope has allowed the detection of H2 in gas with low metallicity, Z/Z_solar ~= 10^{-2}, and high neutral hydrogen column density, N(HI) ~= 2.6*10^{21} cm^{-2}, at redshift z_abs = 3.3901 toward QSO 0000-2620. The measured H2 fractional abundance of f(H2) ~= 4*10^{-8} is lower than a typical value for Galactic interstellar clouds of high N(HI) column density by a factor of (2-3)*10^6. Since H2 molecules are formed efficiently on dust grains, it implies that the dust condensation in this DLA is negligible, and hence the abundances derived from metal absorption lines are the actual ones. The obtained f(H2) value leads to an estimate of the dust number density of < n_d >_DLA ~= 10^{-3}*< n_d >_ISM, which is consistent with the dust-to-gas ratio k <= 1.6 10^{-3} derived independently from the [Cr/Zn] and [Fe/Zn] ratios.

Abundances of metal-weak thick-disc candidates

High resolution spectra of 5 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars suggested by Beers & Sommer-Larsen (1995) are analyzed to determine their chemical abundances. The low abundance of all the objects has been confirmed with metallicity reaching [Fe/H]=-2.9. However, for three objects, the astrometric data from the Hipparcos catalogue suggests they are true halo members. The remaining two, for which proper-motion data are not available, may have disc-like kinematics. It is therefore clear that it is useful to address properties of putative metal-weak thick-disc stars only if they possess full kinematic data. For CS 22894-19 the abundance pattern similar to those of typical halo stars is found, suggesting that chemical composition is not a useful discriminant between thick-disc and halo stars. CS 29529-12 is found to be C enhanced with [C/Fe]=+1.0; other chemical peculiarities involve the s process elements: [Sr/Fe]=-0.65 and [Ba/Fe]=+0.62, leading to a high [Ba/Sr] considerably larger than what is found in more metal-rich carbon-rich stars, but similar to LP 706-7 and LP 625-44 discussed by Norris et al (1997a). Hipparcos data have been used to calculate the space velocities of 25 candidate metal-weak thick-disc stars, thus allowing us to identify 3 bona fide members, which support the existence of a metal-poor tail of the thick-disc, at variance with a claim to the contrary by Ryan & Lambert (1995).

Nitrogen Abundances in Damped Ly alpha Galaxies

Nitrogen abundances have been derived in Damped Ly alpha (DLA) galaxies at Zabs = 2.309, 2.827 and 3.025 toward the QSOs 0100+1300, 1425+6039 and 0347-3819 respectively. The behaviour of nitrogen relative to iron-peak and alpha-elements has been investigated by considering all the extant NI determinations for a total of 9 DLA galaxies. We have estimated the fraction of iron locked into dust grains to convert the observed [N/Fe] ratios into overall (dust plus gas) relative abundances, [N/Fe]corr. The ratios [N/alpha] have been mostly determined by using sulphur as a tracer of alpha-elements which is unaffected by dust. The [N/Fe] and [N/alpha] ratios show high dispersions, of one order of magnitude or more, which have no equivalent in other element-to-element ratios in DLAs. The lowest values of the [N/Fe]corr and [N/alpha] ratios are at variance with the values measured in Galactic halo stars of similar metallicity suggesting that part of the DLA galaxies do not follow the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. The DLA nitrogen abundances and their dispersion show some similarities with those observed in dwarf galaxies. The behaviour of nitrogen abundance ratios can be ascribed, in general to the delayed release of nitrogen in the course of evolution. However it is difficult to conciliate this interpretation with the lowest [N/alpha] values measured, since an expected enhancement of alpha-elements respect to the iron-peak elements is not observed simultaneously in these DLA galaxies. In two cases, relatively high [N/alpha] values are observed which require also a more complex chemical evolution to be explained.

Optical follow-up of GRB 970508

We report on the results of optical follow-up observations of the counterpart of GRB 970508, starting 7 hours after the event. Multi-color U, B, V, R$_{c}$ and I$_{c}$ band observations were obtained during the first three consecutive nights. The counterpart was monitored regularly in R$_{c}$ until $\sim$ 4 months after the burst. The light curve after the maximum follows a decline that can be fitted with a power law with exponent $α$ = --1.141 $\pm$ 0.014. Deviations from a smooth power law decay are moderate (r.m.s. = 0.15 magnitude). We find no flattening of the light curve at late times. The optical afterglow fluence is a significant fraction, $\sim$ 5%, of the GRB fluence. The optical energy distribution can be well represented by a power law, the slope of which changed at the time of the maximum (the spectrum became redder).

The $z=0.558$ absorption system towards PKS 0118-272: A candidate Damped Ly $α$ system at low redshift

We present a spectroscopic and imaging study of the z=0.558 MgII absorption system towards the BL Lac PKS 0118-272. At the absorber redshift we detect lines of the low ionization species MgI, MgII, CaII, TiII, MnII, and FeII. The column densities of these species are typical of the interstellar gas in the disk of the Galaxy. By assuming dust-free gas with solar abundances we infer N(HI) > 2.5 x 10^19 cm^-2. The high value of this conservative lower limit indicates that the absorber is a Damped Ly alpha system. We find [Ti/Fe] = +0.3, in agreement with [Ti/Fe] measurements in DLA absorbers, but [Mn/Fe] = +0.4, at variance with the values [Mn/Fe]<0 common to DLA systems. The measured [Ti/Fe] and [Mn/Fe] ratios match remarkably well the differential depletion pattern of low-density interstellar clouds in the Galaxy. Unlike high-redshift DLA systems (z>2), the z=0.558 absorber seems to originate in a galaxy that has already attained the abundances and dust content of present-day disk galaxies. The analysis of our imaging data lends support to the presence of an intervening galaxy. After careful subtraction of the BL Lac image, an object at 1.6 arcsec from PKS 0118-272 is detected. At the absorber redshift the projected distance (14 h_50^-1 kpc) and the absolute magnitude (M_R ~ -22.3) of this companion are consistent with those found for galaxies associated with low-redshift DLA systems.
