INTEGRAL observations of the PSR B1259-63 / SS2883 system after the 2004 periastron passage

The millisecond pulsar PSR B1259-63 and the Be star SS2883 are situated in a highly eccentric binary system, with orbital period ~3.4 years. We report on hard X-ray observations obtained with the INTEGRAL satellite close to the 2004 periastron passage. These are the first imaging observations of this system in the hard X-ray range (>20 keV) and allow the emission of PSR B1259-63 to be separated from that of a nearby unidentified variable source which may have contaminated previous hard X-ray observations of this system. Using the IBIS/ISGRI instrument we measured a flux of ~2--6 mCrab in the 20--200 keV range, with a power law spectrum of photon index of 1.3 +/- 0.5.

Variability of X-ray pulsars in a hard energy band observed with INTEGRAL

We present the first results of the observations of the X-ray pulsars LMC X-4, 4U0352+309 and EXO1722-363 performed with the INTEGRAL observatory. The LMC X-4 was investigated during the whole superorbital cycle ($\sim$30 days) and it was found that its period was not stable at this time scale. We detected a variable X-ray flux (18-60 keV) from the pulsar EXO1722-363, which could be connected with the orbital motion in the binary system. A more accurate position and the estimate of the orbital period for this source are reported. We also investigated a hard X-ray spectrum of 4U0352+309 (X Persei) measured with INTEGRAL and report the detection of the cyclotron absorption line at about 29 keV.

INTEGRAL broadband spectroscopy of Vela X-1

The wind-accreting X-ray binary pulsar and cyclotron line source Vela X-1 has been observed extensively during INTEGRAL Core Program observations of the Vela region in June-July and November-December 2003. In the latter set of observations the source showed intense flaring -- see also Staubert et al. (2004), these proceedings. We present early results on time averaged and time resolved spectra, of both epochs of observations. A cyclotron line feature at ~53 keV is clearly detected in the INTEGRAL spectra and its broad shape is resolved in SPI spectra. The remaining issues in the calibration of the instruments do not allow to resolve the question of the disputed line feature at 20-25 keV. During the first main flare the average luminosity increases by a factor of \~10, but the spectral shape remains very similar, except for a moderate softening.

The INTEGRAL LMXRB Monitoring Programme

Our collaboration is responsible for the study of a sample of 72 low mass X-ray binaries (LMXRB) using the INTEGRAL Core Programme data. In this paper we describe the monitoring programme we have started and the current variability and spectral results on a sample of 8 persistently bright LMXRBs hosting a neutron star (Z and Atoll sources). Current results show that among our sample of sources there seems to be no important difference in the variability of Z sources with respect to Atolls and the first colour-colour and hardness intensity diagrams built in the "traditional" energy bands display the expected patterns. Z sources seem to be harder than the bright Atolls of our sample (above 20 keV) and present no evident cut-off until about 50 keV. A hint of a non-thermal hard tail is seen in Sco X-1 with ISGRI and SPI, similarly to what was previously detected by D'Amico et al. (2001) with RXTE. These results, even if preliminary, show the importance of such a programme and the potential underlying it to understand these sources as a class.

Scientific Performance of the ISDC Quick Look Analysis

The INTEGRAL Science Data Centre (ISDC) routinely monitors the Near Real Time data (NRT) from the INTEGRAL satellite. A first scientific analysis is made in order to check for the detection of new, transient or highly variable sources in the data. Of primary importance for this work is the Interactive Quick Look Analysis (IQLA), which produces JEM-X and ISGRI images and monitors them for interesting astrophysical events

First results on the HMXRB Pulsar SAXJ2103.5+4545 with INTEGRAL

We report on the preliminary timing and spectral analysis of the High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsar SAXJ2103.5+4545 as observed with INTEGRAL during the Galactic Pla n Scan of the Core Program. The source shows a hard spectrum, being detected up to 100 keV. The timing analysis performed on IBIS/ISGRI data shows evidence for a spin-up wi th respect to previous observations, performed in 1997 and 1999 with BeppoSAX an d RossiXTE.

INTEGRAL and RXTE observations of broad-line radio galaxy 3C 111

3C 111 is an X-ray bright broad-line radio galaxy which is classified as a Fanaroff-Riley type II source with a double-lobe/single jet morphology, and reported superluminal motion. It is a well-known X-ray source, and was observed by every major X-ray observatory since HEAO-1. In this paper we present the results of the RXTE and INTEGRAL data analysis and compare them with the results of the previous observations.

INTEGRAL-RXTE observations of Cygnus X-1

We present first results from contemporaneous observations of Cygnus X-1 with INTEGRAL and RXTE, made during INTEGRAL's performance verification phase in 2002 November and December. Consistent with earlier results, the 3-250 keV data are well described by Comptonization spectra from a Compton corona with a temperature of kT~50-90 keV and an optical depth of tau~1.0-1.3 plus reflection from a cold or mildly ionized slab with a covering factor of Omega/2pi~0.2-0.3. A soft excess below 10 keV, interpreted as emission from the accretion disk, is seen to decrease during the 1.5 months spanned by our observations. Our results indicate a remarkable consistency among the independently calibrated detectors, with the remaining issues being mainly related to the flux calibration of INTEGRAL.

Simultaneous observations of the quasar 3C 273 with INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton and RXTE

INTEGRAL has observed the bright quasar 3C 273 on 3 epochs in January 2003 as one of the first observations of the open programme. The observation on January 5 was simultaneous with RXTE and XMM-Newton observations. We present here a first analysis of the continuum emission as observed by these 3 satellites in the band from 3 keV to 500 keV. The continuum spectral energy distribution of 3C 273 was observed to be weak and steep in the high energies during this campaign. We present the actual status of the cross calibrations between the instruments on the three platforms using the calibrations available in June 2003.

First INTEGRAL Observations of Eight Persistent Neutron Star Low Mass X-ray Binaries

Early results from the INTEGRAL Core Program, for a sample of eight persistently bright neutron star low mass X-ray binaries in the energy range from 5 keV to 200 keV are presented. It is shown that INTEGRAL efficiently detects sources and that spectra may be obtained up to several hundreds of keV by combining data from three of the four INTEGRAL instruments: JEM-X, IBIS and SPI. For the source GX 17+2 it is shown that the spectrum extends well above 100 keV with a flattening of the spectrum above 30 keV. This might suggest a non-thermal comptonisation emission, but uncertainties in the current data reduction and background determination do not allow firm conclusions to be drawn.
