Bulgarian national input to the European Strategy for Particle Physics

The present document summarizes the view and the vision of the Bulgarian subatomic physics scientific community for the development of the field of subatomic physics from the Bulgarian national perspective. It outlines the present activities and the strengths and weaknesses of the research field, together with the interests of the community for the future development of the technological and scientific landscape.

Kaon physics with a high-intensity proton driver

We study opportunities for future high-precision experiments in kaon physics using a high-intensity proton driver, which could be part of the front-end of a muon storage ring complex. We discuss in particular the rare decays $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$, $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$, $K_L\toπ^0e^+e^-$, and lepton-flavour violating modes such as $K_L\toμe$ and $K\toπμe$. The outstanding physics potential and long-term interest of these modes is emphasized. We review status and prospects of current and planned experiments for the processes under consideration, and indicate possible improvements and strategies towards achieving the necessary higher sensitivity. Finally, we outline the machine requirements needed to perform these high-precision kaon experiments in the context of a muon storage ring facility.

Neutrino oscillations in the early Universe

We discuss the oscillations effects on neutrinos in the early Universe and update the cosmological constraints on the oscillation parameters. It is shown that sterile LOW solution to the solar neutrino problem is almost completely excluded from cosmological nucleosynthesis considerations. Two possibilities for the relaxation of this constraint are discussed: high primordial helium-4 yield and a relic lepton asymmetry present at nucleosynthesis epoch. The numerical analysis proved that Y_p=0.25 only relaxes the constraint on LOW solution, while L > 10^{-5} is capable to remove it.

Charged-Lepton-Flavour Violation in Kaon Decays in Supersymmetric Theories

We discuss rare kaon decays that violate charged-lepton flavour conservation in supersymmetric theories with and without R parity, in view of possible experiments using an intense proton source as envisaged for a neutrino factory. In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, such decays are generated by box diagrams involving charginos and neutralinos, but the limits from μ-> e γ, μ-e conversion and Δm_K constrain the branching ratios to challengingly small values. However, this is no longer the case in R-violating theories, where such decays may occur at tree level at rates close to the present experimental limits. Within this framework, we obtain bounds on products of LL\bar{E} and LQ\bar{D} operators from the experimental upper limits on K^0 -> μ^\pm e^\mp and K^{\pm,0} -> π^{\pm,0} μ^\pm e^\mp decays. We also note the possibility of like-sign lepton decays K^\pm -> π^\mp \ell^\pm \ell^\pm in the presence of non-zero \tilde{b}_L-\tilde{b}_R mixing. We conclude that rare kaon decays violating charged-lepton flavour conservation could be an interesting signature of R violation.

On the Oscillation Length Resonance in the Transitions of Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos Crossing the Earth Core

Assuming two-neutrino mixing takes place in vacuum, we study in detail the conditions under which the $ν_2 \to ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ \to ν_{e}$ ($ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$) transitions in the Earth are strongly enhanced by the neutrino oscillation length resonance when the neutrinos cross the Earth core. We show, in particular, that the neutrino oscillation length resonance is operative also in the $\barν_μ \to \barν_{s}$ transitions at small mixing angles. The properties of the $ν_2 \to ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ \to ν_{e}$ ($ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$) transition probabilities in the corresponding resonance regions are examined. Some implications of our results for the transitions of solar and atmospheric neutrinos traversing the Earth core, relevant for the interpretation of the results of the solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, are also discussed.
