Proposal of thermal neutron flux monitors based on vibrating wire

Two types of neutron monitors with fine spatial resolution are proposed based on vibrating wire. In the first type, neutrons interact with the vibrating wire, heat it, and lead to the change of natural frequency, which can be precisely measured. To increase the heat deposition during the neutron scattering, use of gadolinium layer which has the highest thermal neutron capture cross section among all elements is proposed. The second type of the monitor uses vibrating wire as a resonant target. Besides the measurement of beam profile according to the average signal, the differential signal synchronized with the wire oscillations defines the gradient of beam profile. Spatial resolution of the monitor is defined by the diameter of the wire.

Space-charge compensation experiments at IOTA ring

Space-charge effects belong to the category of the most long-standing issues in beam physics, and even today, after several decades of very active exploration and development of counter-measures, they still pose the most profound limitations on performance of high intensity proton accelerators. We briefly consider past experience in active compensation of these effects and present in detail the progress towards experimental studies of novel schemes of space-charge compensation at the Fermilab's IOTA ring.

Experimental Proof of Adjustable Single-Knob Ion Beam Emittance Partitioning

The performance of accelerators profits from phase space tailoring by coupling of planes. The previously applied techniques swap the emittances among the three planes but the set of available emittances is fixed. In contrast to these emittance exchange scenarios the emittance transfer scenario presented here allows for arbitrarily changing the set of emittances as long as the product of the emittances is preserved. This letter is on the first experimental demonstration of transverse emittance transfer along an ion beam line. The amount of transfer is chosen by setting just one single magnetic field value. The envelope-functions (beta) and -slopes (alpha) of the finally uncorrelated and re-partitioned beam at the exit of the transfer line do not depend on the amount of transfer.

Investigation Of Breakdown Induced Surface Damage On 805 Mhz Pillbox Cavity Interior Surfaces

The MuCool Test Area (MTA) at Fermilab is a facility to develop the technology required for ionization cooling for a future Muon Collider and/or Neutrino Factory. As part of this research program, we have tested two 805 MHz vacuum RF cavities in a multi-Tesla magnetic field to study the effects of the static magnetic field on the cavity operation. This study gives useful information on field emitters in the cavity, dark current, surface conditioning, breakdown mechanisms and material properties of the cavity. All these factors determine the maximum accelerating gradient in the cavity. This paper discusses the image processing technique for quantitative estimation of spark damage spot distribution on cavity interior surfaces. The distribution is compared with the electric field distribution predicted by a computer code calculation. The local spark density is proportional to probability of surface breakdown and shows a power law dependence on the maximum electric field (E). This E dependence is consistent with the dark current calculated from the Fowler-Nordheim equation.
