Tunneling transition to the Pomeron regime

We point out that, in some models of small-x hard processes, the transition to the Pomeron regime occurs through a sudden tunneling effect, rather than a slow diffusion process. We explain the basis for such a feature and we illustrate it for the BFKL equation with running coupling by gluon rapidity versus scale correlation plots.

Expanding running coupling effects in the hard Pomeron

We study QCD hard processes at scales of order k^2 > Lambda^2 in the limit in which the beta-function coefficient - b is taken to be small, but alphas(k) is kept fixed. The (nonperturbative) Pomeron is exponentially suppressed in this limit, making it possible to define purely perturbative high-energy Green's functions. The hard Pomeron exponent acquires diffusion and running coupling corrections which can be expanded in the b parameter and turn out to be dependent on the effective coupling b alphas^2 Y. We provide a general setup for this b-expansion and we calculate the first few terms both analytically and numerically.

Towards Collinear Evolution Equations in Electroweak Theory

We consider electroweak radiative corrections to hard inclusive processes at the TeV scale, and we investigate how collinear logarithms factorize in a spontaneously broken gauge theory, similarly to the DGLAP analysis in QCD. Due to the uncancelled double logs noticed previously, we find a factorization pattern which is qualitatively different from the analogous one in QCD. New types of splitting functions emerge which are needed to describe the initial beam charges and are infrared-sensitive, that is dependent on an infrared cutoff provided, ultimately, by the symmetry breaking scale. We derive such splitting functions at one-loop level in the example of SU(2) gauge theory, and we also discuss the structure functions' evolution equations, under the assumption that isospin breaking terms present in the Ward identities of the theory are sufficiently subleading at higher orders.

Electroweak double logarithms in inclusive observables for a generic initial state

High energy observables are characterized by large electroweak radiative corrections of infrared origin; double logarithms are present even for inclusive cross sections, thus violating the Bloch Nordsieck theorem. This effect, related to the initial states carrying nonabelian isospin charges, is here investigated for {\sl any} inclusive cross section in the SU(2)$\otimes$U(1) symmetric limit, that is appropriate for energies much higher than the weak scale. We develop a general formalism allowing to calculate the all order double log resummed cross sections once the hard (tree level) ones are known. The relevant cases of fermion-fermion, fermion-boson and boson-boson scattering are discussed.

Electroweak Bloch-Nordsieck violation at the TeV scale: "strong" weak interactions ?

Hard processes at the TeV scale exhibit enhanced (double log) EW corrections even for inclusive observables, leading to violation of the Bloch-Nordsieck theorem. This effect, previously related to the non abelian nature of free EW charges in the initial state (e- e+, e- p, p p ...), is here investigated for fermion initiated hard processes and to all orders in EW couplings. We find that the effect is important, especially for lepton initiated processes, producing weak effects that in some cases compete in magnitude with the strong ones. We show that this (double log) BN violating effect has a universal energy dependence, related to the Sudakov form factor in the adjoint representation. The role of this form factor is to suppress cross section differences within a weak isospin doublet, so that at very large energy the cross sections for left-handed electron-positron and neutrino-positron scattering become equal. Finally, we briefly discuss the phenomenological relevance of our results for future colliders.

Bloch-Nordsieck violating electroweak corrections to inclusive TeV scale hard processes

We point out that, since the colliders initial states (e+ e-,p p, p pbar, ... ) carry a definite nonabelian flavor, electroweak radiative corrections to inclusive hard cross sections at the TeV scale are affected by peculiar Bloch-Nordsieck violating double logs. We recall the setup of soft cancellation theorems, and we analyze the magnitude of the noncancelling terms in the example of electron - positron annihilation into hadrons.

A collinear model for small-x physics

We propose a simple model for studying small-x physics in which we take only the collinearly enhanced part of leading and subleading kernels, for all possible transverse momentum orderings. The small-x equation reduces to a second order differential equation in t=log k^2/Lambda^2 space, whose perturbative and strong-coupling features are investigated both analytically and numerically. For two-scale processes, we clarify the transition mechanism between the perturbative, non Regge regime and the strong-coupling Pomeron behavior.

Renormalization Group Improved Small-x Equation

We propose and analyze an improved small-x equation which incorporates exact leading and next-to-leading BFKL kernels on one hand and renormalization group constraints in the relevant collinear limits on the other. We work out in detail the recently proposed omega-expansion of the solution, derive the Green's function factorization properties and discuss both the gluon anomalous dimension and the hard pomeron. The resummed results are stable, nearly renormalization-scheme independent, and join smoothly with the fixed order perturbative regime. Two critical hard pomeron exponents are provided, which - for reasonable strong-coupling extrapolations - are argued to provide bounds on the pomeron intercept.

The BFKL Equation at Next-to-Leading Order and Beyond

On the basis of a renormalization group analysis of the kernel and of the solutions of the BFKL equation with subleading corrections, we propose and calculate a novel expansion of a properly defined effective eigenvalue function. We argue that in this formulation the collinear properties of the kernel are taken into account to all orders, and that the ensuing next-to-leading truncation provides a much more stable estimate of hard Pomeron and of resummed anomalous dimensions.

k-Factorization and Impact Factors at Next-to-leading Level

We further analyse,at next-to-leading log(s) level, the form of k-factorization and the definition of impact factors previously proposed by one of us,and we generalize them to the case of hard colourless probes. We then calculate the finite one-loop corrections to quark and gluon impact factors and we find them universal, and given by the same K factor which occurs in the soft timelike splitting functions.

Irreducible part of the next-to-leading BFKL kernel

On the basis of previous work by Fadin, Lipatov, and collaborators, and of our group, we extract the "irreducible" part of the next-to-leading (NL) BFKL kernel, we compute its (IR finite) eigenvalue function, and we discuss its implications for small-x structure functions. We find consistent running coupling effects and sizable NL corrections to the Pomeron intercept and to the gluon anomalous dimension. The qualitative effect of such corrections is to smooth out the small-x rise of structure functions at low values of Q2. A more quantitative analysis will be possible after the extraction of some additional, energy-scale dependent contributions to the kernel, which are not treated here.

k-Factorization and Small-x Anomalous Dimensions

We investigate the consistency requirements of the next-to leading BFKL equation with the renormalization group, with particular emphasis on running coupling effects and NL anomalous dimensions. We show that, despite some model dependence of the bare hard Pomeron, such consistency holds at leading twist level, provided the effective variable $α_s(t) log(1/x)$ is not too large. We give a unified view of resummation formulas for coefficient functions and anomalous dimensions in the Q_0-scheme and we discuss in detail the new one for the $q\bar{q}$ contributions to the gluon channel.

Model (In)dependent Features of the Hard Pomeron

We discuss the small-x behaviour of the next-to-leading BFKL equation, depending on various smoothing out procedures of the running coupling constant at low momenta. While scaling violations (with resummed and calculable anomalous dimensions) turn out to be always consistent with the renormalization group, we argue that the nature and the location of the so-called hard Pomeron are dependent on the smoothing out procedure, and thus really on soft hadronic interactions.

(2+1)-Gravity Solutions with Spinning Particles

We derive, in 2+1 dimensions, classical solutions for metric and motion of two or more spinning particles, in the conformal Coulomb gauge introduced previously. The solutions are exact in the $N$-body static case, and are perturbative in the particles' velocities in the dynamic two-body case. A natural boundary for the existence of our gauge choice is provided by some ``CTC horizons'' encircling the particles, within which closed timelike curves occur.

Non Abelian $q\bar{q}$ contributions to small-$x$ anomalous dimensions

By using $\k$-factorization, we derive resummation formulas for the non-abelian $q\bar{q}$ contributions to both heavy flavour production by gluon fusion, and to the next-to-leading BFKL kernel. By combining this result with previous ones by Fadin et al. on the virtual terms, we also compute in closed form the complete $q\bar{q}$ contribution to the gluon anomalous dimension in the $Q_0$-scheme. We find that $q\bar{q}$ resummation effects are important for heavy flavour production, but are instead small in the anomalous dimension eigenvalues, because of a cancellation between abelian and non abelian contributions.

Small$-x$ Resummation Effects in Electroweak Processes

We investigate small$-x$ resummation effects in QCD coefficient functions for $Z_0g$ and $Wg$ fusion processes, and we compare them with the known ones of $γg$ type. We find a strong process dependence, that we argue to be due to the possible presence of collinear singularities for either small or large $\k$ of the exchanged gluon. For top quark production, we find that the $gg\ra t\bar{t}$ and $Z_0g\ra t\bar{t}$ channels have larger resummation enhancements than the $Wg\ra t\bar{t}$ one.

Solving The N-Body Problem in (2+1)-Gravity

We construct a non-perturbative, single-valued solution for the metric and the motion of $N$ interacting particles in $2+1$-Gravity. The solution is explicit for two particles with any speed and for any number of particles with small speed. It is based on a mapping from multivalued Minkowskian coordinates to single-valued ones, which solves the non-abelian monodromies due to particles' momenta. The two and three-body cases are treated in detail.

Non-Perturbative Particle Dynamics

We construct a non-perturbative, single-valued solution for the metric and the motion of two interacting particles in ($2+1$)-Gravity, by using a Coulomb gauge of conformal type. The method provides the mapping from multivalued ( minkowskian ) coordinates to single-valued ones, which solves the non-abelian monodromies due to particles's momenta and can be applied also to the general N-body case.
