A class of Finsler surfaces whose geodesics are circles

We determine all Finsler metrics of Randers type for which the Riemannian part is a scalar multiple of the Euclidean metric, on an open subset of the Euclidean plane, whose geodesics are circles. We show that the Riemannian part must be of constant Gaussian curvature, and that for every such Riemannian metric there is a class of Randers metrics satisfying the condition, determined up to the addition of a total derivative, depending on a single parameter. As one of several applications we exhibit a Finsler metric whose geodesics are the oriented horocycles in the Poincare disk, in each of the two possible orientations.

Hilbert forms for a Finsler metrizable projective class of sprays

The projective Finsler metrizability problem deals with the question whether a projective-equivalence class of sprays is the geodesic class of a (locally or globally defined) Finsler function. In this paper we use Hilbert-type forms to state a number of different ways of specifying necessary and sufficient conditions for this to be the case, and we show that they are equivalent. We also address several related issues of interest including path spaces, Jacobi fields, totally-geodesic submanifolds of a spray space, and the equivalence of path geometries and projective-equivalence classes of sprays.

The multiplier approach to the projective Finsler metrizability problem

This paper is concerned with the problem of determining whether a projective-equivalence class of sprays is the geodesic class of a Finsler function. We address both the local and the global aspects of this problem. We present our results entirely in terms of a multiplier, that is, a type (0,2) tensor field along the tangent bundle projection. In the course of the analysis we consider several related issues of interest including the positivity and strong convexity of positively-homogeneous functions, the relation to the so-called Rapcsák conditions, some peculiarities of the two-dimensional case, and geodesic convexity for sprays.

Homogeneity and projective equivalence of differential equation fields

We propose definitions of homogeneity and projective equivalence for systems of ordinary differential equations of order greater than two, which allow us to generalize the concept of a spray (for systems of order two). We show that the Euler-Lagrange fields of parametric Lagrangians of order greater than one which are regular (in a natural sense that we define) form a projective equivalence class of homogeneous systems. We show further that the geodesics, or base integral curves, of projectively equivalent homogeneous differential equation fields are the same apart from orientation-preserving reparametrization; that is, homogeneous differential equation fields determine systems of paths.

Involutive distributions and dynamical systems of second-order type

We investigate the existence of coordinate transformations which bring a given vector field on a manifold equipped with an involutive distribution into the form of a second-order differential equation field with parameters. We define associated connections and we give a coordinate-independent criterion for determining whether the vector field is of quadratic type. Further, we investigate the underlying global bundle structure of the manifold under consideration, induced by the vector field and the involutive distribution.

The Cartan form for constrained Lagrangian systems and the nonholonomic Noether theorem

This paper deals with conservation laws for mechanical systems with nonholonomic constraints. It uses a Lagrangian formulation of nonholonomic systems and a Cartan form approach. We present what we believe to be the most general relations between symmetries and first integrals. We discuss the so-called nonholonomic Noether theorem in terms of our formalism, and we give applications to Riemannian submanifolds, to Lagrangians of mechanical type, and to the determination of quadratic first integrals.

Reduction of invariant constrained systems using anholonomic frames

We analyze two reduction methods for nonholonomic systems that are invariant under the action of a Lie group on the configuration space. Our approach for obtaining the reduced equations is entirely based on the observation that the dynamics can be represented by a second-order differential equations vector field and that in both cases the reduced dynamics can be described by expressing that vector field in terms of an appropriately chosen anholonomic frame.

Holonomy of a class of bundles with fibre metrics

This paper is concerned with the holonomy of a class of spaces which includes Landsberg spaces of Finsler geometry. The methods used are those of Lie groupoids and algebroids as developed by Mackenzie. We prove a version of the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for such spaces. The paper ends with a discussion of how the results may be extended to Finsler spaces and homogeneous nonlinear connections in general.

The inverse problem for Lagrangian systems with certain non-conservative forces

We discuss two generalizations of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations, one in which a given mechanical system can be brought into the form of Lagrangian equations with non-conservative forces of a generalized Rayleigh dissipation type, the other leading to Lagrangian equations with so-called gyroscopic forces. Our approach focusses primarily on obtaining coordinate-free conditions for the existence of a suitable non-singular multiplier matrix, which will lead to an equivalent representation of a given system of second-order equations as one of these Lagrangian systems with non-conservative forces.

Anholonomic frames in constrained dynamics

We demonstrate the usefulness of anholonomic frames in the contexts of nonholonomic and vakonomic systems. We take a consistently differential-geometric approach. As an application, we investigate the conditions under which the dynamics of the two systems will be consistent. A few illustrative examples confirm the results.

Reduction and reconstruction aspects of second-order dynamical systems with symmetry

We examine the reduction process of a system of second-order ordinary differential equations which is invariant under a Lie group action. With the aid of connection theory, we explain why the associated vector field decomposes in three parts and we show how the integral curves of the original system can be reconstructed from the reduced dynamics. An illustrative example confirms the results.

Routh's procedure for non-Abelian symmetry groups

We extend Routh's reduction procedure to an arbitrary Lagrangian system (that is, one whose Lagrangian is not necessarily the difference of kinetic and potential energies) with a symmetry group which is not necessarily Abelian. To do so we analyse the restriction of the Euler-Lagrange field to a level set of momentum in velocity phase space. We present a new method of analysis based on the use of quasi-velocities. We discuss the reconstruction of solutions of the full Euler-Lagrange equations from those of the reduced equations.

Invariant Lagrangians, mechanical connections and the Lagrange-Poincare equations

We deal with Lagrangian systems that are invariant under the action of a symmetry group. The mechanical connection is a principal connection that is associated to Lagrangians which have a kinetic energy function that is defined by a Riemannian metric. In this paper we extend this notion to arbitrary Lagrangians. We then derive the reduced Lagrange-Poincare equations in a new fashion and we show how solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations can be reconstructed with the help of the mechanical connection. Illustrative examples confirm the theory.

The inverse problem for invariant Lagrangians on a Lie group

We discuss the problem of the existence of a regular invariant Lagrangian for a given system of invariant second-order differential equations on a Lie group $G$, using approaches based on the Helmholtz conditions. Although we deal with the problem directly on $TG$, our main result relies on a reduction of the system on $TG$ to a system on the Lie algebra of $G$. We conclude with some illustrative examples.

The fundamental form of a homogeneous Lagrangian in two independent variables

We construct, for a homogeneous Lagrangian of arbitrary order in two independent variables, a differential 2-form with the property that it is closed precisely when the Lagrangian is null. This is similar to the property of the `fundamental Lepage equivalent' associated with first-order Lagrangians defined on jets of sections of a fibred manifold.
