Nonlinear Hydrodynamics of Disentangled Flux-Line Liquids

In this paper we use non-Gaussian hydrodynamics to study the magnetic response of a flux-line liquid in the mixed state of a type-II superconductor. Both the derivation of our model, which goes beyond conventional Gaussian flux liquid hydrodynamics, and its relationship to other approaches used in the literature are discussed. We focus on the response to a transverse tilting field which is controlled by the tilt modulus, c44, of the flux array. We show that interaction effects can enhance c44 even in infinitely thick clean materials. This enhancement can be interpreted as the appearance of a disentangled flux-liquid fraction. In contrast to earlier work, our theory incorporates the nonlocality of the intervortex interaction in the field direction. This nonlocality is crucial for obtaining a nonvanishing renormalization of the tilt modulus in the thermodynamic limit of thick samples.

Nonequilibrium Steady States of Driven Periodic Media

We study a periodic medium driven over a random or periodic substrate. Our work is based on nonequilibrium continuum hydrodynamic equations of motion, which we derive microscopically. We argue that in the random case instabilities will always destroy the LRO of the lattice. In most, if not all, cases, the stable driven ordered state is a transverse smectic, with ordering wavevector perpendicular to the velocity. It consists of a periodic array of flowing liquid channels, with transverse displacements and density (``permeation mode'') as hydrodynamic variables. We present dynamic functional renormalization group calculations in two and three dimensions for an approximate model of the smectic. The finite temperature behavior is much less glassy than in equilibrium, owing to a disorder-driven effective ``heating'' (allowed by the absence of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem). This, in conjunction with the permeation mode, leads to a fundamentally analytic transverse response for $T>0$. Our results are compared to recent experiments and other theoretical work.

Comment on "Moving Glass Phase of Driven Lattices"

We consider a periodic lattice rapidly driven through a quenched random potential as a model of a moving Abrikosov lattice. In addition to the transverse phonon displacements $u_y$, we consider the displacements $u_x$ along the direction of motion, which were assumed to be small in earlier treatments. We show that these displacements are in fact divergent even on large length scales and therefore lead to a breakdown of the elastic model along the direction of motion. We propose that the resulting phase is a moving "smectic" with translational order that is quasi-long-range transverse and liquid-like parallel to the direction of motion.

Dynamical Transition in Sliding Charge-density Waves with Quenched Disorder

We have studied numerically the dynamics of sliding charge-density waves (CDWs) in the presence of impurities in d=1,2. The model considered exhibits a first order dynamical transition at a critical driving force $F_c$ between ``rough'' (disorder dominated) $(F F_c)$ sliding phases where disorder is washed out by the external drive. The effective model for the sliding CDWs in the presence of impurities can be mapped onto that of a magnetic flux line pinned by columnar defects and tilted by an applied field. The dynamical transition of sliding CDWs corresponds to the transverse Meissner effect of the tilted flux line.

Glassy Motion of Elastic Manifolds

We discuss the low-temperature dynamics of an elastic manifold driven through a random medium. For driving forces well below the $T=0$ depinning force, the medium advances via thermally activated hops over the energy barriers separating favorable metastable states. We show that the distribution of waiting times for these hopping processes scales as a power-law. This power-law distribution naturally yields a nonlinear glassy response for the driven medium, $v\sim\exp(-{\rm const}\times F^{-μ})$.

Theory of Double-Sided Flux Decorations

A novel two-sided Bitter decoration technique was recently employed by Yao et al. to study the structure of the magnetic vortex array in high-temperature superconductors. Here we discuss the analysis of such experiments. We show that two-sided decorations can be used to infer {\it quantitative} information about the bulk properties of flux arrays, and discuss how a least squares analysis of the local density differences can be used to bring the two sides into registry. Information about the tilt, compressional and shear moduli of bulk vortex configurations can be extracted from these measurements.

Interface Motion in Random Media at Finite Temperature

We have studied numerically the dynamics of a driven elastic interface in a random medium, focusing on the thermal rounding of the depinning transition and on the behavior in the $T=0$ pinned phase. Thermal effects are quantitatively more important than expected from simple dimensional estimates. For sufficient low temperature the creep velocity at a driving force equal to the $T=0$ depinning force exhibits a power-law dependence on $T$, in agreement with earlier theoretical and numerical predictions for CDW's. We have also examined the dynamics in the $T=0$ pinned phase resulting from slowly increasing the driving force towards threshold. The distribution of avalanche sizes $S_\|$ decays as $S_\|^{-1-κ}$, with $κ= 0.05\pm 0.05$, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.

AC Response of Flux-Line Liquid in High $T_c$ Superconductors

We use a hydrodynamics theory to discuss the response of a viscous flux-line liquid to an ac perturbation applied at the surface of the sample. The theory incorporates viscoelastic effects and describes the crossover between liquid-like and solid-like response of the vortex array as the frequency of the perturbation increases. A large viscosity from flux-line interactions and entanglement leads to viscous screening of surface fields. As a result, two frequency-dependent length scales are needed to describe the penetration of an ac field. For large viscosities the imaginary part of the ac permeability can exihibit, in addition to the well-know peak associated with flux diffusion across the sample, a new low-frequency peak corresponding to the transition from solid-like to liquid-like behavior.

Low-Temperatures Vortex Dynamics in Twinned Superconductors

We discuss the low-temperature dynamics of magnetic flux lines in samples with a family of parallel twin planes. A current applied along the twin planes drives flux motion in the direction transverse to the planes and acts like an electric field applied to {\it one-dimensional} carriers in disordered semiconductors. As in flux arrays with columnar pins, there is a regime where the dynamics is dominated by superkink excitations that correspond to Mott variable range hopping (VRH) of carriers. In one dimension, however, rare events, such as large regions void of twin planes, can impede VRH and dominate transport in samples that are sufficiently long in the direction of flux motion. In short samples rare regions can be responsible for mesoscopic effects.

Modification of the Magnetic Flux-Line Interaction at a Superconductor's Surface

The pair interaction between magnetic flux lines in a semi-infinite slab of an anisotropic type-II superconductor in an external field is derived in the London limit. The case where the applied field is normal to the superconductor/vacuum interface is considered. The presence of stray fields near the surface leads to an additional contribution to the repulsive interaction between flux lines that vanishes exponentially with the distance from the interface. The pair interaction is used to obtain the continuum elastic energy of a distorted semi-infinite flux-line array. The presence of the superconductor/vacuum interface yields surface contributions to the compressional and tilt elastic constants.
