Exact Absorption Probability in the Extremal Six-Dimensional Dyonic String Background

We show that the minimally coupled massless scalar wave equation in the background of an six-dimensional extremal dyonic string (or D1-D5 brane intersection) is exactly solvable, in terms of Mathieu functions. Using this fact, we calculate absorption probabilities for these scalar waves, and present the explicit results for the first few low energy corrections to the leading-order expressions. For a specific tuning of the dyonic charges one can reach a domain where the low energy absorption probability goes to zero with inverse powers of the logarithm of the energy. This is a dividing domain between the regime where the low energy absorption probability approaches zero with positive powers of energy and the regime where the probability is an oscillatory function of the logarithm of the energy. By the conjectured AdS/CFT correspondence, these results shed novel light on the strongly coupled two-dimensional field theory away from its infrared conformally invariant fixed point (the strongly coupled ``non-critical'' string).

Physics Implications of Flat Directions in Free Fermionic Superstring Models I: Mass Spectrum and Couplings

From the "top-down" approach we investigate physics implications of the class of D- and F- flat directions formed from non-Abelian singlets which are proven flat to all orders in the nonrenormalizable superpotential, for a prototype quasi-realistic free fermionic string model with the standard model gauge group and three families (CHL5). These flat directions have at least an additional U(1)' unbroken at the string scale. For each flat direction, the complete set of effective mass terms and effective trilinear superpotential terms in the observable sector are computed to all orders in the VEV's of the fields in the flat direction. The "string selection-rules" disallow a large number of couplings allowed by gauge invariance, resulting in a massless spectrum with a large number of exotics, in most cases excluded by experiment, thus signifying a generic flaw of these models. Nevertheless, the resulting trilinear couplings of the massless spectrum possess a number of interesting features which we analyse for two representative flat directions: for the fermion texture; baryon- and lepton-number violating couplings; R-parity breaking; non-canonical mu terms; and the possibility of electroweak and intermediate scale symmetry breaking scenarios for U(1)'. The gauge coupling predictions are obtained in the electroweak scale case. Fermion masses possess t-b and tau-mu universality, with the string scale Yukawa couplings g and $g/\sqrt{2}$, respectively. Fermion textures are present for certain flat directions, but only in the down-quark sector. Baryon- and lepton- number violating couplings can trigger proton-decay, $N-{\bar N}$ oscillations, leptoquark interactions and R-parity violation, leading to the absence of a stable LSP.

Physics Implications of Flat Directions in Free Fermionic Superstring Models II: Renormalization Group Analysis

We continue the investigation of the physics implications of a class of flat directions for a prototype quasi-realistic free fermionic string model (CHL5), building upon the results of the previous paper in which the complete mass spectrum and effective trilinear couplings of the observable sector were calculated to all orders in the superpotential. We introduce soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters into the model, and investigate the gauge symmetry breaking patterns and the renormalization group analysis for two representative flat directions, which leave an additional $U(1)'$ as well as the SM gauge group unbroken at the string scale. We study symmetry breaking patterns that lead to a phenomenologically acceptable $Z-Z'$ hierarchy, $M_{Z^{'}} \sim {\cal O}(1~{\rm TeV})$ and $ 10^{12}~{\rm GeV}$ for electroweak and intermediate scale $U(1)^{'}$ symmetry breaking, respectively, and the associated mass spectra after electroweak symmetry breaking. The fermion mass spectrum exhibits unrealistic features, including massless exotic fermions, but has an interesting $d$-quark hierarchy and associated CKM matrix in one case. There are (some) non-canonical effective $μ$ terms, which lead to a non-minimal Higgs sector with more than two Higgs doublets involved in the symmetry breaking, and a rich structure of Higgs particles, charginos, and neutralinos, some of which, however, are massless or ultralight. In the electroweak scale cases the scale of supersymmetry breaking is set by the $Z^{'}$ mass, with the sparticle masses in the several TeV range.

Non-Extreme Black Holes of Five Dimensional N=2 AdS Supergravity

We derive and analyse the full set of equations of motion for non-extreme static black holes (including examples with the spatial curvatures k=-1 and k=0) in D=5 N=2 gauged supergravity by employing the techniques of "very special geometry". These solutions turn out to differ from those in the ungauged supergravity only in the non-extremality function, which has an additional term (proportional to the gauge coupling g), responsible for the appearance of naked singularities in the BPS-saturated limit. We derive an explicit solution for the STU model of gauged supergravity which is incidentally also a solution of D=5 N=4 and N=8 gauged supergravity. This solution is specified by three charges, the asymptotic negative cosmological constant (minimum of the potential) and a non-extremality parameter. While its BPS-saturated limit has a naked singularity, we find a lower bound on the non-extremality parameter (or equivalently on the ADM mass) for which the non-extreme solutions are regular. When this bound is saturated the extreme (non-supersymmetric) solution has zero Hawking temperature and finite entropy. Analogous qualitative features are expected to emerge for black hole solutions in D=4 gauged supergravity as well.

Decoupling Limit, Lens Spaces and Taub-NUT: D=4 Black Hole Microscopics from D=5 Black Holes

We study the space-times of non-extremal intersecting p-brane configurations in M-theory, where one of the components in the intersection is a ``NUT,'' i.e. a configuration of the Taub-NUT type. Such a Taub-NUT configuration corresponds, upon compactification to D=4, to a Gross-Perry-Sorkin (GPS) monopole. We show that in the decoupling limit of the CFT/AdS correspondence, the 4-dimensional transverse space of the NUT configuration in D=5 is foliated by surfaces that are cyclic lens spaces S^3/Z_N, where N is the quantised monopole charge. By contrast, in D=4 the 3-dimensional transverse space of the GPS monopole is foliated by 2-spheres. This observation provides a straightforward interpretation of the microscopics of a D=4 string-theory black hole, with a GPS monopole as one of its constituents, in terms of the corresponding D=5 black hole with no monopole. Using the fact that the near-horizon region of the NUT solution is a lens space, we show that if the effect of the Kaluza-Klein massive modes is neglected, p-brane configurations can be obtained from flat space-time by means of a sequence of dimensional reductions and oxidations, and U-duality transformations.

Spacetimes of Boosted p-branes, and CFT in Infinite-momentum Frame

We study the spacetimes of the near-horizon regions in D3-brane, M2-brane and M5-brane configurations, in cases where there is a pp-wave propagating along a direction in the world-volume. While non-extremal configurations of this kind locally have the same Carter-Novotny-Horsky-type metrics as those without the wave, taking the BPS limit results instead in Kaigorodov-type metrics, which are homogeneous, but preserve 1/4 of the supersymmetry, and have global and local structures that are quite different from the corresponding anti-de Sitter spacetimes associated with solutions where there is no pp-wave. We show that the momentum density of the system is non-vanishing and held fixed under the gravity decoupling limit. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence, M-theory and type IIB theory in the near-horizon region of these boosted BPS-configurations specifies the corresponding CFT on the boundary in an infinitely-boosted frame with constant momentum density. We model the microstates of such boosted configurations (which account for the microscopic counting of near-extremal black holes in D=7, D=9 and D=6) by those of a boosted dilute massless gas in a d=4, d=3 and d=6 spacetime respectively. Thus we obtain a simple description for the entropy of 2-charge black holes in D=7,9 and 6 dimensions. The paper includes constructions of generalisations of the Kaigorodov and Carter-Novotny-Horsky metrics in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, and an investigation of their properties.

Electroweak Breaking and the mu problem in Supergravity Models with an Additional U(1)

We consider electroweak symmetry breaking in supersymmetric models with an extra non-anomalous U(1)' gauge symmetry and an extra standard-model singlet scalar S. For appropriate charges the U(1)' forbids an elementary mu term, but an effective mu is generated by the VEV of S, leading to a natural solution to the mu problem. There are a variety of scenarios leading to acceptably small Z-Z' mixing and other phenomenological consequences, all of which involve some but not excessive fine tuning. One class, driven by a large trilinear soft supersymmetry breaking term, implies small mixing, a light Z' (e.g., 200 GeV), and an electroweak phase transition that may be first order at tree level. In another class, with m_S^2 < 0 (radiative breaking), the typical scale of dimensional parameters, including M_{Z'} and the effective mu, is O(1 TeV), but the electroweak scale is smaller due to cancellations. We relate the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters at the electroweak scale to those at the string scale, choosing Yukawa couplings as determined within a class of string models. We find that one does not obtain either scenario for universal soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters at the string scale and no exotic multiplets contributing to the renormalization group equations. However, either scenario is possible when the assumption of universal soft breaking is relaxed. Radiative breaking can also be generated by exotics, which are expected in most string models.

Sigma model of near-extreme rotating black holes and their microstates

Five-dimensional non-extreme rotating black holes with large NS-NS five-brane and fundamental string charge are shown to be described by a conformal sigma model, which is a marginal integrable deformation of six-dimensional SL(2,R) x SU(2) WZW model. The two WZW levels are equal to the five-brane charge, while the parameters of the two marginal deformations generated by the left and right chiral SU(2) currents are proportional to the two angular momentum components of the black hole. The near-horizon description is effectively in terms of a free fundamental string whose tension is rescaled by the five-brane charge. The microstates are identified with those of left and right moving superconformal string oscillations in the four directions transverse to the five-brane. Their statistical entropy reproduces precisely the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the rotating black hole.

Intermediate Scales, Mu Parameter, and Fermion Masses from String Models

We address intermediate scales within a class of string models. The intermediate scales occur due to the SM singlets S_i acquiring non-zero VEVs due to radiative breaking; the mass-square (m_i)^2 of S_i is driven negative at mu_{RAD} due to order(1) Yukawa couplings of S_i to exotic particles (calculable in a class of string models). The actual VEV of S_i depends on the relative magnitude of the non-renormalizable terms of the type (S_i)^{K+3}/M^K in the superpotential. We mainly consider the case in which the S_i are charged under an additional non-anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry and the VEVs occur along F- and D-flat directions. We explore various scenarios in detail, depending on the type of Yukawa couplings to the exotic particles and on the initial boundary values of the soft SUSY breaking parameters. We then address the implications of these scenarios for the mu parameter and the fermionic masses of the standard model.

Classification of Flat Directions in Perturbative Heterotic Superstring Vacua with Anomalous U(1)

We develop techniques to classify D- and F-flat directions for N=1 supersymmetric string vacua of the perturbative heterotic string theory, which possess an anomalous U(1) gauge group at the tree level. Genus-one corrections generate a Fayet-Iliopoulos term for the D-term of U(1)_A, which is canceled by non-zero vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of certain massless multiplets in such a way that the anomalous U(1) is broken, while maintaining the D- and F-flatness of the effective field theory. A systematic analysis of flat directions is given for non-zero VEVs of non-Abelian singlets, and the techniques are illustrated for a specific model. The approach sets the stage to classify the D- and F-flat directions for a large class of perturbative string vacua. This classification is a prerequisite to address systematically the phenomenological consequences of these models.

Z' Physics and Supersymmetry

We review the status of heavy neutral gauge bosons, Z', with emphasis on constraints that arise in supersymmetric models, especially those motivated from superstring compactifications. We first summarize the current phenomenological constraints and the prospects for Z' detection and diagnostics at the LHC and NLC. After elaborating on the status and (lack of) predictive power for general models with an additional Z', we concentrate on motivations and successes for Z' physics in supersymmetric theories in general and in a class of superstring models in particular. We review phenomenologically viable scenarios with the Z' mass in the electroweak or in the intermediate scale region.

Non-extreme black holes from non-extreme intersecting M-branes

We present non-extreme generalisations of intersecting p-brane solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity which upon toroidal compactification reduce to non-extreme static black holes in dimensions D=4, D=5 and 5<D<10, parameterized by four, three and two charges, respectively. The D=4 black holes are obtained either from non-extreme configuration of three intersecting five-branes with a boost along the common string or from non-extreme intersecting system of two two-branes and two five-branes. The D=5 black holes arise from three intersecting two-branes or from a system of intersecting two-brane and five-brane with a boost along the common string. Five-brane and two-brane with a boost along one direction reduce to black holes in D=6 and D=9, respectively, while D=7 black hole can be interpreted in terms of non-extreme configuration of two intersecting two-branes. We discuss the expressions for the corresponding masses and entropies.

General class of BPS saturated dyonic black holes as exact superstring solutions

We show that a four-parameter generating solution for a general class of four-dimensional, spherically-symmetric, static, dyonic BPS saturated solutions of leading-order effective equations of toroidally compactified heterotic or type II superstring theory are exact string solutions. The corresponding ten-dimensional background defines a conformal sigma-model which is a particular case of a `chiral null model' with curved `transverse' part. The exact conformal invariance is a consequence of the chiral null structure of the `electric' part of the model and the N=4 world-sheet supersymmetry of its transverse `magnetic' part. The sigma-model action has a remarkable covariance under both target space and the electromagnetic $S$-duality transformations, and it illustrates the relation between string-string duality in six dimensions and $S$-duality in four dimensions. In general, there exists a large class of exact six-dimensional superstring solutions described by chiral null models with four-dimensional transverse parts represented by N=4 supersymmetric sigma-models with metrics conformal to hyper-Kahler ones.

Discovery and Identification of Extra Gauge Bosons

The discovery potential and diagnostic abilities of proposed future colliders for new heavy neutral ($Z'$) and charged ($W'$) gauge bosons are summarized. Typical bounds achievable on $M_{Z',W'}$ at the TEVATRON, DI-TEVATRON, LHC, 500 GeV NLC, and 1 TeV NLC are $\sim$1~TeV, $\sim$2~TeV, $\sim$4~TeV, 1--3~TeV, and 2--6~TeV, respectively. For $M_{Z'} \sim$1 TeV the LHC will have the capability to determine the magnitude of normalized $Z'$ quark and lepton couplings to around $10-20\%$, while the NLC would allow for determination of the couplings (including their signs) with a factor of 2 larger error-bars, provided heavy flavor tagging and longitudinal polarization of the electron beam is available.

Kahler Potentials For Orbifolds With Continuous Wilson Lines And The Symmetries Of The String Action.

By employing the symmetries of the underlying conformal field theory, the tree-level Kähler potentials for untwisted moduli of the heterotic string compactifications on orbifolds with continuous Wilson lines are derived. These symmetries act linearly on bosonic (toroidal and $E_8\times E_8$ gauge) string coordinates as well as on the untwisted (toroidal and continuous Wilson lines) moduli; they correspond to the scaling of toroidal moduli, the axionic shift of toroidal moduli and the shift of the continuous Wilson line moduli. In turn such symmetries provide sufficient constraints to determine the form of the low-energy effective action associated with the untwisted moduli up to a multiplicative factor.

Reconstruction of the Extended Gauge Structure from $Z'$ Observables at Future Colliders

The discovery of a new neutral gauge boson $Z'$ with a mass in the TeV region would allow for determination of gauge couplings of the $Z'$ to ordinary quarks and leptons in a model independent way. We show that these couplings in turn would allow us to determine the nature of the extended gauge structure. As a prime example we study the $E_6$ group. In this case two discrete constraints on experimentally determined couplings have to be satisfied. If so, the couplings would then uniquely determine the two parameters, $\tan β$ and $δ$, which fully specify the nature of the $Z'$ within $E_6$. If the $Z'$ is part of the $E_6$ gauge structure, then for $M_{Z'}=1$ TeV $\tan β$ and $δ$ could be determined to around $10\%$ at the future colliders. The NLC provides a unique determination of the two constraints as well as of $\tan β$ and $δ$, though with slightly larger error bars than at the LHC. On the other hand, since the LHC primarily determines three out of four normalized couplings, it provides weaker constraints for the underlying gauge structure.

Comparison of Diagnostic Z' Physics at Future pp and e+e- Colliders

We present recent developments in the diagnostic study of heavy gauge bosons at future $pp$ (CERN LHC) and $e^+e^-$ (NLC) colliders with the emphasis on the model independent determination of gauge couplings of $Z'$ to quarks and leptons. The analysis reflects a complementary diagnostic power of the LHC and the NLC (c.m. energy 500 GeV, integrated luminosity 20 fb$^{-1} $). At the NLC for $M_{Z'} \sim 1 $ TeV {\it all } the quark and lepton charges can be determined to around $10-20 \%$, provided heavy flavor tagging and longitudinal polarization of the electron beam is available. At the LHC primarily the magnitude of three (out of four) normalized couplings can be determined, however typical uncertainties are by a factor $\sim 2$ smaller than at the NLC.

Diagnostic Power of Future Colliders for Z'Couplings to Quarks and Leptons: e+e- versus pp Colliders

We study the diagnostic power of future $e^+e^-$ colliders with ${\sqrt {s}} = 500$ GeV (the New Large Collider ($NLC$)) for a model independent determination of the $Z'$ gauge couplings to quarks and leptons. The interference of the $Z'$ propagator with the photon and the $Z$ propagator in the two-fermion final state probes are sensitive to the magnitude as well as relative signs of quark and lepton charges. For $Z'$ with $M_{Z'} \sim 1 $ TeV {\it all } the quark and lepton charges can be determined to around $10-20 \%$, provided heavy flavor tagging and longitudinal polarization of the electron beam is available. The errors are $2-10$ times larger without polarization, and very little information can be obtained about quark charges without heavy flavor tagging. We point out the complementarity of future hadron colliders. At the CERN Large Hadron Collider ($LHC$) primarily the magnitude of three out of four corresponding couplings can be measured; however, their error-bars are typically by a factor of $\sim 2$ smaller than those at the $NLC$.
