Extreme-ultraviolet optical response of atomically-thin molybdenum disulfide

We report multi-angle reflectivity measurements in the extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) range for mono- and bilayer MoS$_2$ on a Si$_3$N$_4$ substrate. Using a single-sheet 2D conductivity model, we extract the complex optical response of the MoS$_2$ bilayer between 25 and 90 eV and derive an effective refractive index by introducing a thickness equal to the interlayer spacing. The MoS$_2$ monolayer response is consistently reproduced either by halving the 2D conductivity or the effective thickness, indicating a robust scaling with layer number. The resulting optical constants display a broad resonance at the Mo N$_{2,3}$ edge with no signatures of sharp core-exciton features despite the reduced dimensionality. First-principles calculations reproduce the experimental results and show that local-field (Hartree) effects dominate the XUV response, while screened-exchange (SEX) contributions remain weak and mainly induce spectral shifts. Our analysis demonstrates that excitonic effects play a minor role in the XUV optical response of atomically thin MoS$_2$, highlighting key differences with respect to the visible and infrared regimes, and calling for a reassessment of the use of Mo-based transition metal dichalcogenides in attosecond spectroscopy and XUV excitonics.

Euclid. III. The NISP Instrument

The Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) on board the Euclid satellite provides multiband photometry and R>=450 slitless grism spectroscopy in the 950-2020nm wavelength range. In this reference article we illuminate the background of NISP's functional and calibration requirements, describe the instrument's integral components, and provide all its key properties. We also sketch the processes needed to understand how NISP operates and is calibrated, and its technical potentials and limitations. Links to articles providing more details and technical background are included. NISP's 16 HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detectors with a plate scale of 0.3" pix^-1 deliver a field-of-view of 0.57deg^2. In photo mode, NISP reaches a limiting magnitude of ~24.5AB mag in three photometric exposures of about 100s exposure time, for point sources and with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 5. For spectroscopy, NISP's point-source sensitivity is a SNR = 3.5 detection of an emission line with flux ~2x10^-16erg/s/cm^2 integrated over two resolution elements of 13.4A, in 3x560s grism exposures at 1.6 mu (redshifted Ha). Our calibration includes on-ground and in-flight characterisation and monitoring of detector baseline, dark current, non-linearity, and sensitivity, to guarantee a relative photometric accuracy of better than 1.5%, and relative spectrophotometry to better than 0.7%. The wavelength calibration must be better than 5A. NISP is the state-of-the-art instrument in the NIR for all science beyond small areas available from HST and JWST - and an enormous advance due to its combination of field size and high throughput of telescope and instrument. During Euclid's 6-year survey covering 14000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky, NISP will be the backbone for determining distances of more than a billion galaxies. Its NIR data will become a rich reference imaging and spectroscopy data set for the coming decades.

Exciton-Exciton transitions involving strongly bound excitons: an ab initio approach

In pump-probe spectroscopy, two laser pulses are employed to garner dynamical information from the sample of interest. The pump initiates the optical process by exciting a portion of the sample from the electronic ground state to an accessible electronic excited state, an exciton. Thereafter, the probe interacts with the already excited sample. The change in the absorbance after pump provides information on transitions between the excited states and their dynamics. In this work we study these exciton-exciton transitions by means of an ab initio real time propagation scheme based on dynamical Berry phase formulation. The results are then analyzed taking advantage of a Fermi-golden rule approach formulated in the excitonic basis-set and in terms of the symmetries of the excitonic states. Using bulk LiF and 2D hBN as two prototype materials, we discuss the selection rules for transitions involving strongly bound excitons, for which the hydrogen model cannot be used.

The CCD Controller and Detector

All the scientific instruments of the Italian National Telescope "Galileo" (TNG). as well as the tracking systems and the Shack-Hartmann wavefront systems use CCDs as detectors. The CCD procurement is crucial to optimize the instruments performance, and, of course, equal importance assumes the design and realization of controllers able to drive various kinds of CCDs with a very low readout noise. Detectors characterization is of fundamental importance when they have to be used in scientific instrumentation. Various CCDs have been assembled in cryostats and tested at our laboratory in order to select the suitable detector for the optical instruments of the TNG. The relevant phases of the group activity are here described, as well as the commissioning at the telescope and the work that is in progress.

The commissioning phase

In May 1997 a consistent part of the services and structures committed to the industry had already been released to the commissioning group. The telescope itself was, with the exception of the Nasmyth derotators, motors and all the optics groups, basically ready in its mechanical parts to accept the integration of all services and control equipment. Also the verification of the cabling (interlocks, data-nets, power and controls) already mounted was started in the same period. Starting from June 1998 (telescope first-light date) the telescope went gradually in use, several nights per week, in order to test and tune the tracking and pointing system, the optics and the first derotator system (Nasmyth A station). At the end of the commissioning period and with the first scientific instruments mounted (April 1999) also the first routinely observations started. In this moment the telescope is doing astronomy 80% of time and the complete first-light instrumentation is mounted.

CCDs for the instrumentation of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo

Most of the scientific instrumentation as well as the tracking systems and the Shack- Hartmann wavefront analysers at the Italian National Telescope Galileo use CCDs as detectors. The characterization of detectors is of fundamental importance for their correct utilization in scientific instrumentation. We report on the measurement of the electro-optical characteristics of CCDs that will be used in the scientific instrumentation at the Italian National Telescope. In particular we will show and compare the quantum eÆciency, the charge transfer eÆciency, the dark current, the read out noise the uniformity and the linearity of two sets of CCDs manufactured by EEV and LORAL. Finally, we will show the preliminary tests done at the telescope with the optical imager that has a mosaic of two EEV chips.

Euclid Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer instrument flight model presentation, performance and ground calibration results summary

The NISP (Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer) is one of the two Euclid instruments. It operates in the near-IR spectral region (950-2020nm) as a photometer and spectrometer. The instrument is composed of: a cold (135 K) optomechanical subsystem consisting of a Silicon carbide structure, an optical assembly, a filter wheel mechanism, a grism wheel mechanism, a calibration unit, and a thermal control system, a detection system based on a mosaic of 16 H2RG with their front-end readout electronic, and a warm electronic system (290 K) composed of a data processing / detector control unit and of an instrument control unit that interfaces with the spacecraft via a 1553 bus for command and control and via Spacewire links for science data. This paper presents: the final architecture of the flight model instrument and subsystems, and the performance and the ground calibration measurement done at NISP level and at Euclid Payload Module level at operational cold temperature.

Real-time ab initio description of the photon-echo mechanisms in extended systems: the case study of bulk GaAs

In this paper we present an ab initio real-time analysis of free polarization decay and photon echo in extended systems. As a prototype material, we study bulk GaAs driven by ultra-short laser pulses of 10 fs (energy spread of 0.4 eV), with frequency tuned in the continuum of the optical spectrum. We compute the electronic polarization P(t), and define a computational procedure to extract the echo signal in the dipole approximation. Results are obtained in both the low and high field regime, and compared with a two-levels system (TLS) model, with parameters extracted from the ab initio simulations. ab initio results are in optimal agreement with the TLS in the low-field case, whereas some differences are observed in the high-field regime where the multi-band nature of GaAs becomes relevant. In the high field regime we compute the pulse area, and look for fluences with pulse area close to π. We highlight that such fluences are well below the damage threshold of GaAs. However a unique value of the area cannot be defined, due to the strong dependence of the transition dipoles in the energy window excited by the laser pulse.

Work function, deformation potential, and collapse of Landau levels in strained graphene and silicene

We perform a systematic {\it ab initio} study of the work function and its uniform strain dependence for graphene and silicene for both tensile and compressive strains. The Poisson ratios associated with armchair and zigzag strains are also computed. Based on these results, we obtain the deformation potential, crucial for straintronics, as a function of the applied strain. Further, we propose a particular experimental setup with a special strain configuration that generates only the electric field, while the pseudomagnetic field is absent. Then, applying a real magnetic field, one should be able to realize experimentally the spectacular phenomenon of the collapse of Landau levels in graphene or related two-dimensional materials.

Aqueye+: a new ultrafast single photon counter for optical high time resolution astrophysics

Aqueye+ is a new ultrafast optical single photon counter, based on single photon avalanche photodiodes (SPAD) and a 4-fold split-pupil concept. It is a completely revisited version of its predecessor, Aqueye, successfully mounted at the 182 cm Copernicus telescope in Asiago. Here we will present the new technological features implemented on Aqueye+, namely a state of the art timing system, a dedicated and optimized optical train, a high sensitivity and high frame rate field camera and remote control, which will give Aqueye plus much superior performances with respect to its predecessor, unparalleled by any other existing fast photometer. The instrument will host also an optical vorticity module to achieve high performance astronomical coronography and a real time acquisition of atmospheric seeing unit. The present paper describes the instrument and its first performances.
