Pairing of a harmonically trapped fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas

The fermionic Tonks-Girardeau (FTG) gas is a one-dimensional spin-polarized Fermi gas with infinitely strong attractive zero-range odd-wave interactions, arising from a confinement-induced resonance reachable via a three-dimensional p-wave Feshbach resonance. We investigate the off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) of the FTG gas subjected to a longitudinal harmonic confinement by analyzing the two-particle reduced density matrix for which we derive a closed-form expression. Using a variational approach and numerical diagonalization we find that the largest eigenvalue of the two-body density matrix is of order N/2, where N is the total particle number, and hence a partial ODLRO is present for a FTG gas in the trap.

Bosonization, Pairing, and Superconductivity of the Fermionic Tonks-Girardeau Gas

We determine some exact static and time-dependent properties of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau (FTG) gas, a spin-aligned one-dimensional Fermi gas with infinitely strongly attractive zero-range odd-wave interactions. We show that the two-particle reduced density matrix exhibits maximal off-diagonal long-range order, and on a ring an FTG gas with an even number of atoms has a highly degenerate ground state with quantization of Coriolis rotational flux and high sensitivity to rotation and to external fields and accelerations. For a gas initially under harmonic confinement we show that during an expansion the momentum distribution undergoes a "dynamical bosonization", approaching that of an ideal Bose gas without violating the Pauli exclusion principle.

Fermi-Bose mapping for one-dimensional Bose gases

One-dimensional Bose gases are considered, interacting either through the hard-core potentials or through the contact delta potentials. Interest in these gases gained momentum because of the recent experimental realization of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases in traps with tightly confined radial motion, achieving the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) regime of strongly interacting atoms. For such gases the Fermi-Bose mapping of wavefunctions is applicable. The aim of the present communication is to give a brief survey of the problem and to demonstrate the generality of this mapping by emphasizing that: (i) It is valid for nonequilibrium wavefunctions, described by the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, not merely for stationary wavefunctions. (ii) It gives the whole spectrum of all excited states, not merely the ground state. (iii) It applies to the Lieb-Liniger gas with the contact interaction, not merely to the TG gas of impenetrable bosons.

Static and Dynamic Properties of Trapped Fermionic Tonks-Girardeau Gases

We investigate some exact static and dynamic properties of one-dimensional fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gases in tight de Broglie waveguides with attractive p-wave interactions induced by a Feshbach resonance. A closed form solution for the one-body density matrix for harmonic trapping is analyzed in terms of its natural orbitals, with the surprising result that for odd, but not for even, numbers of fermions the maximally occupied natural orbital coincides with the ground harmonic oscillator orbital and has the maximally allowed fermionic occupancy of unity. The exact dynamics of the trapped gas following turnoff of the p-wave interactions are explored.

Theory of spinor Fermi and Bose gases in tight atom waveguides

Divergence-free pseudopotentials for spatially even and odd-wave interactions in spinor Fermi gases in tight atom waveguides are derived. The Fermi-Bose mapping method is used to relate the effectively one-dimensional fermionic many-body problem to that of a spinor Bose gas. Depending on the relative magnitudes of the even and odd-wave interactions, the N-atom ground state may have total spin S=0, S=N/2, and possibly also intermediate values, the case S=N/2 applying near a p-wave Feshbach resonance, where the N-fermion ground state is space-antisymmetric and spin-symmetric. In this case the fermionic ground state maps to the spinless bosonic Lieb-Liniger gas. An external magnetic field with a longitudinal gradient causes a Stern-Gerlach spatial separation of the corresponding trapped Fermi gas with respect to various values of $S_z$.

Effective interactions, Fermi-Bose duality, and ground states of ultracold atomic vapors in tight de Broglie waveguides

Derivation of effective zero-range one-dimensional (1D) interactions between atoms in tight waveguides is reviewed, as is the Fermi-Bose mapping method for determination of exact and strongly-correlated states of ultracold bosonic and fermionic atomic vapors in such waveguides, including spin degrees of freedom. Odd-wave 1D interactions derived from 3D p-wave scattering are included as well as the usual even-wave interactions derived from 3D s-wave scattering, with emphasis on the role of 3D Feshbach resonances for selectively enhancing s-wave or p-wave interactions. A duality between 1D fermions and bosons with zero-range interactions suggested by Cheon and Shigehara is shown to hold for the effective 1D dynamics of a spinor Fermi gas with both even and odd-wave interactions and that of a spinor Bose gas with even and odd-wave interactions, with even(odd)-wave Bose coupling constants inversely related to odd(even)-wave Fermi coupling constants. Some recent applications of Fermi-Bose mapping to determination of many-body ground states of Bose gases and of both magnetically trapped, spin-aligned and optically trapped, spin-free Fermi gases are described, and a new generalized Fermi-Bose mapping is used to determine the phase diagram of ground-state total spin of the spinor Fermi gas as a function of the even and odd-wave coupling constants.

Fermi-Bose mapping and N-particle ground state of spin-polarized fermions in tight atom waveguides

A K-matrix for waveguide confined spin-polarized fermionic atoms recently computed by Granger and Blume is identified, in the low-energy domain, with a contact condition for one-dimensional (1D) spinless fermions. Difficulties in consistently formulating the contact conditions in terms of interaction potentials are discussed and a rigorous alternative variational reformulation is constructed. A duality between 1D fermions and bosons with zero-range interactions suggested by Cheon and Shigehara is shown to hold for the effective 1D dynamics of a spin-polarized Fermi gas with 3D p-wave interactions and that of a Bose gas with 3D s-wave interactions in a tight waveguide. This generalizes the mapping from impenetrable bosons (TG gas) to free fermions and is used to derive the equation of state of an ultracold spin-polarized fermionic vapor in a tight waveguide. Near a 1D confinement-induced resonance one has a "fermionic TG gas" which maps to an ideal Bose gas.

Dynamics of Lieb-Liniger Gases

It is proved that the Lieb-Liniger (LL) cusp condition implementing the delta function interaction in one-dimensional Bose gases is dynamically conserved under phase imprinting by pulses of arbitrary spatial form and the subsequent many-body dynamics in the thermodynamic limit is expressed approximately in terms of solutions of the time-dependent single-particle Schrodinger equation for a set of time-dependent orbitals evolving from an initial LL-Fermi sea. As an illustrative application, generation of gray solitons in a LL gas on a ring by a phase-imprinting pulse is studied.

Interference of a thermal Tonks gas on a ring

A nonzero temperature generalization of the Fermi-Bose mapping theorem is used to study the exact quantum statistical dynamics of a one-dimensional gas of impenetrable bosons on a ring. We investigate the interference produced when an initially trapped gas localized on one side of the ring is released, split via an optical-dipole grating, and recombined on the other side of the ring. Nonzero temperature is shown not to be a limitation to obtaining high visibility fringes.

Crossover from one to three dimensions for a gas of hard-core bosons

We develop a variational theory of the crossover from the one-dimensional (1D) regime to the 3D regime for ultra-cold Bose gases in thin waveguides. Within the 1D regime we map out the parameter space for fermionization, which may span the full 1D regime for suitable transverse confinement.

Bose-Fermi variational theory of the BEC-Tonks crossover

A number-conserving hybrid Bose-Fermi variational theory is developed and applied to investigation of the BEC-Tonks gas crossover in toroidal and long cylindrical traps of high aspect ratio, where strong many-body correlations and condensate depletion occur.

Quantum mechanics of one-dimensional trapped Tonks gases

Several experimental groups are currently working towards realizing quasi-one-dimensional (1D) atom waveguides and loading them with ultracold atoms. The dynamics becomes truly 1D in a regime (Tonks gas) of low temperatures and densities and large positive scattering lengths for which the transverse mode becomes frozen, in which case the many-body Schrodinger dynamics becomes exactly soluble via a Fermi-Bose mapping theorem. In this paper we review our recent work on the exact ground state and quantum dynamics of 1D Tonks gases and assess the possibility of approaching the Tonks regime using Bessel beam optical dipole traps.

Measurement of one-particle correlations and momentum distributions for trapped 1D gases

van Hove's theory of scattering of probe particles by a macroscopic target is generalized so as to relate the differential cross section for atomic ejection via stimulated Raman transitions to one-particle momentum-time correlations and momentum distributions of 1D trapped gases. This method is well suited to probing the longitudinal momentum distributions of 1D gases in situ, and examples are given for bosonic and fermionic atoms.

Comment on "Strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in harmonic traps"

A recent paper of Tanatar and Erkan [Phys. Rev. A 62, 053601 (2000)] discusses a density functional approach to the impenetrable point Bose gas in one dimension and an equation for the order parameter of the system, due originally to Kolomeisky et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 1146 (2000)], is derived. We comment on the regime of validity of such a model and on qualitative differences between predictions of the density functional approach and known exact results.

Ground state properties of a one-dimensional condensate of hard core bosons in a harmonic trap

The exact N-particle ground state wave function for a one-dimensional condensate of hard core bosons in a harmonic trap is employed to obtain accurate numerical results for the one-particle density matrix, occupation number distribution of the natural orbitals, and momentum distribution. Our results show that the occupation of the lowest orbital varies as N^{0.59}, in contrast to N^{0.5} for a spatially uniform system, and N for a true BEC.

Efficient Algorithm for Optimal Control of Mixed-State Quantum Systems

In [1] Zhu and Rabitz presented a rapidly convergent iterative algorithm for optimal control of the expectation value of a positive definite observable in a pure-state quantum system. In this paper we generalize this algorithm to a quantum statistical mechanics setting and show that it is both efficient in the mixed-state case and effective in achieving the control objective of maximizing the ensemble average of arbitrary observables in the cases studied.
