Electronic Structure of ZnCNi3

According to a recent report by Park et al, ZnCNi3 is isostructural and isovalent to the superconducting (Tc = 8 K) anti-perovskite, MgCNi3, but shows no indication of a superconducting transition down to 2K. A comparison of calculated electronic structures shows that the main features of MgCNi3, particularly the van Hove singularity near the Fermi energy, are preserved in ZnCNi3. Thus the reported lack of superconductivity in ZnCNi3 is not explainable in terms of Tc being driven to a very low value by a small Fermi level density of states. We propose that the lack of superconductivity, the small value of the linear specific heat coefficient, gamma, and the discrepancy between theoretical and experimental lattice constants can all be explained if the material is assumed to be a C-deficient alpha-ZnCNi3 similar to the analogous non-superconducting phase of MgCNi3.

Nesting, spin-fluctuations, and odd-gap superconductivity in NaxCoO2 yH2O

We have calculated the one-electron susceptibility of hydrated NaxCoO2 and find strong nesting nearly commensurate with a 2X2 superstructure. The nesting involves about 70% of all electrons at the Fermi level and is robust with respect to doping. This nesting creates a tendency to a charge density wave compatible with the charge order often seen at x approx 0.5, which is usually ascribed to electrostatic repulsion of Na ions. In the spin channel, it gives rise to strong spin-fluctuations, which should be important for superconductivity. The superconducting state most compatible with this nesting structure is an odd-gap triplet s-wave state.

Structural Aspects of Magnetic Coupling in CaCu3Mn4O12 and CaCu3Ti4O12

Two perovskite-derived materials, CaCu3Mn4O12 and CaCu3Ti4O12, have drawn much recent interest due to their magnetoresistive, dielectric, and magnetoelectronic characteristics. Here we present initial theoretical insights into each of these points, based on first principles, density functional based calculations. Our results predict CCMO to have a spin-asymmetric energy gap, which leads to distinct temperature- and magnetic field-dependent changes in properties, and helps to account for its observed negative magnetoresistivity. We have studied CCTO primarily to gain insight into the exchange coupling in both these compounds, where the conventional superexchange coupling vanishes by symmetry for both nearest and next nearest Cu-Cu neighbors, a consequence of the structure. In CCTO, it is necessary to go to 5th Cu-Cu neighbors to obtain a (superexchange) coupling that can provide the coupling necessary to give three dimensional order. Non-superexchange mechanisms may be necessary to describe the magnetic coupling in this structural class.

MgCNi3 : Complex behavior in a strongly coupled superconductor

Polycrystalline samples of the recently discovered MgCNi3 superconductor were investigated by transport, ac susceptibility, dc magnetization and specific heat measurements in magnetic fields up to 16 T. Consistent results were obtained for the temperature dependence of the upper critical field H_c2(T) from resistance, ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. A WHH like temperature dependence of H_c2(T) and the quadratic relationship H_c2(0) ~ T_c^2 point to an effective predominant single band behavior near the quasi clean limit. Evidence for strong electron-phonon and electron-paramagnon coupling was found analyzing the specific heat data. The corresponding s- and p-wave scenarios are briefly discussed using calculated densities of states of different Fermi surface sheets.

Superconductivity Near Ferromagnetism in MgCNi3

An unusual quasi-two-dimensional heavy band mass van Hove singularity (vHs) lies very near the Fermi energy in MgCNi3, recently reported to superconduct at 8.5 K. This compound is strongly exchange enhanced and is unstable to ferromagnetism upon hole doping with 12% Mg --> Na or Li. The 1/4-depleted fcc (frustrated) Ni sublattice and lack of Fermi surface nesting argues against competing antiferromagnetic and charge density wave instabilities. We identify an essentially infinite mass along the M-Gamma line, leading to quasi-two-dimensionality of this vHs may promote unconventional p-wave pairing that could coexist with superconductivity.
