Conformal Kaehler submanifolds

This paper presents two results in the realm of conformal Kaehler submanifolds. These are conformal immersions of Kaehler manifolds into the standard flat Euclidean space. The proofs are obtained by making a rather strong use of several facts and techniques developed by S. Chion and M. Dajczer for the study of isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds into the standard hyperbolic space.

On Einstein submanifolds of Euclidean space

Let the warped product $M^n=L^m\times_\varphi F^{n-m}$, $n\geq m+3\geq 8$, of Riemannian manifolds be an Einstein manifold with Ricci curvature $\rho$ that admits an isometric immersion into Euclidean space with codimension two. Under the assumption that $L^m$ is also Einstein, but not of constant sectional curvature, it is shown that $\rho=0$ and that the submanifold is locally a cylinder with an Euclidean factor of dimension at least $n-m$. Hence $L^m$ is also Ricci flat. If $M^n$ is complete, then the same conclusion holds globally if the assumption on $L^m$ is replaced by the much weaker condition that either its scalar curvature $S_L$ is constant or that $S_L\leq (2m-n)\rho$.

Kaehler submanifolds of the real hyperbolic space

The local classification of Kaehler submanifolds $M^{2n}$ of the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{2n+p}$ with low codimension $2\leq p\leq n-1$ under only intrinsic assumptions remains a wide open problem. The situation is quite different for submanifolds in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2n+p}$, $2\leq p\leq n-1$, since Florit, Hui and Zheng have shown that the codimension has to be $p=n-1$ and then that any submanifold is just part of an extrinsic product of two-dimensional umbilical spheres in $\mathbb{S}^{3n-1}\subset\mathbb{R}^{3n}$. The main result of this paper is a version for Kaehler manifolds isometrically immersed into the hyperbolic ambient space of the result for spherical submanifolds. Besides, we generalize several results obtained by Dajczer and Vlachos.

Real Kaehler submanifolds in codimension up to four

Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}$ be an isometric immersion of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 5$ into Euclidean space with complex rank at least $5$ everywhere. Our main result is that, along each connected component of an open dense subset of $M^{2n}$, either $f$ is holomorphic in $\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}\cong\mathbb{C}^{n+2}$ or it is in a unique way a composition $f=F\circ h$ of isometric immersions. In the latter case, we have that $h\colon M^{2n}\to N^{2n+2}$ is holomorphic and $F\colon N^{2n+2}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+4}$ belongs to the class, by now quite well understood, of non-holomorphic Kaehler submanifold in codimension two. Moreover, the submanifold $F$ is minimal if and only if $f$ is minimal.

Minimal real Kaehler submanifolds

We show that generic rank conditions on the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+p}$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 2$ into Euclidean space with low codimension $p$ implies that the submanifold has to be minimal. If $M^{2n}$ if simply connected, this amounts to the existence of a one-parameter associated family of isometric minimal immersions unless $f$ is holomorphic.

A class of Einstein submanifolds of Euclidean space

In this paper we give local and global parametric classifications of a class of Einstein submanifolds of Euclidean space. The highlight is for submanifolds of codimension two since in this case our assumptions are only of intrinsic nature.

Conformal infinitesimal variations of submanifolds

This paper belongs to the realm of conformal geometry and deals with Euclidean submanifolds that admit smooth variations that are infinitesimally conformal. Conformal variations of Euclidean submanifolds is a classical subject in differential geometry. In fact, already in 1917 Cartan classified parametrically the Euclidean hypersurfaces that admit nontrivial conformal variations. Our first main result is a Fundamental theorem for conformal infinitesimal variations. The second is a rigidity theorem for Euclidean submanifolds that lie in low codimension.

On constant curvature submanifolds of space forms

We prove a converse to well-known results by E. Cartan and J. D. Moore. Let $f\colon M^n_c\to\Q^{n+p}_{\tilde c}$ be an isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature $c$ into a space form of curvature $\tilde c$, and free of weak-umbilic points if $c>\tilde{c}$. We show that the substantial codimension of $f$ is $p=n-1$ if, as shown by Cartan and Moore, the first normal bundle possesses the lowest possible rank $n-1$. These submanifolds are of a class that has been extensively studied due to their many properties. For instance, they are holonomic and admit Bäcklund and Ribaucour transformations.

Isometric immersions with flat normal bundle between space forms

We investigate the behavior of the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion of a space form with negative curvature into a space form so that the extrinsic curvature is negative. If the immersion has flat normal bundle, we prove that its second fundamental form grows exponentially.

Infinitesimal variations of submanifolds

This paper deals with the subject of infinitesimal variations of Euclidean submanifolds with arbitrary dimension and codimension. The main goal is to establish a Fundamental theorem for these geometric objects. Similar to the theory of isometric immersions in Euclidean space, we prove that a system of three equations for a certain pair of tensors are the integrability conditions for the differential equation that determines the infinitesimal variations. In addition, we give some rigidity results when the submanifold is intrinsically a Riemannian product of manifolds.

Conformal infinitesimal variations of Euclidean hypersurfaces

In the realm of conformal geometry, we give a classification of the Euclidean hypersurfaces that admit a non-trivial conformal infinitesimal variation. In the restricted case of conformal variations, such a classification was obtained by E. Cartan in 1917. The case of infinitesimal isometric variations was done by U. Sbrana in 1908. In particular, we show that the class of hypersurfaces that allow a conformal infinitesimal variation is much larger than the one considered by Cartan.

Conformal Kaehler Euclidean submanifolds

Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+\ell}$, $n \geq 5$, denote a conformal immersion into Euclidean space with codimension $\ell$ of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n$ and free of flat points. For codimensions $\ell=1,2$ we show that such a submanifold can always be locally obtained in a rather simple way, namely, from an isometric immersion of the Kaehler manifold $M^{2n}$ into either $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}$ or $\mathbb{R}^{2n+2}$, the latter being a class of submanifolds already extensively studied.

Holomorphicity of real Kaehler submanifolds

Let $f\colon M^{2n}\to\mathbb{R}^{2n+p}$ denote an isometric immersion of a Kaehler manifold of complex dimension $n\geq 2$ into Euclidean space with codimension $p$. If $2p\leq 2n-1$, we show that generic rank conditions on the second fundamental form of the submanifold imply that $f$ has to be a minimal submanifold. In fact, for codimension $p\leq 11$ we prove that $f$ must be holomorphic with respect to some complex structure in the ambient space.

Genuine infinitesimal bendings of submanifolds

A basic question in submanifold theory is whether a given isometric immersion $f\colon M^n\to\R^{n+p}$ of a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ into Euclidean space with low codimension $p$ admits, locally or globally, a genuine infinitesimal bending. That is, if there exists a genuine smooth variation of $f$ by immersions that are isometric up to the first order. Until now only the hypersurface case $p=1$ was well understood. We show that a strong necessary local condition to admit such a bending is the submanifold to be ruled and give a lower bound for the dimension of the rulings. In the global case, we describe the situation of compact submanifolds of dimension $n\geq 5$ in codimension $p=2$.

A new class of austere submanifolds

Austere submanifolds of Euclidean space were introduced in 1982 by Harvey and Lawson in their foundational work on calibrated geometries. In general, the austerity condition is much stronger than minimality since it express that the nonzero eigenvalues of the shape operator of the submanifold appear in opposite pairs for any normal vector at any point. Thereafter, the challenging task of finding non-trivial explicit examples, other than minimal immersions of Kaehler manifolds, only turned out submanifolds of rank two, and these are of limited interest in the sense that in this special situation austerity is equivalent to minimality. In this paper, we present the first explicitly given family of austere non-Kaehler submanifolds of higher rank, and these are produced from holomorphic data by means of a Weierstrass type parametrization.

A class of complete minimal submanifolds and their associated families of genuine deformations

Concerning the problem of classifying complete submanifolds of Euclidean space with codimension two admitting genuine isometric deformations, until now the only known examples with the maximal possible rank four are the real Kaehler minimal submanifolds classified by Dajczer-Gromoll \cite{dg3} in parametric form. These submanifolds behave like minimal surfaces, namely, if simple connected either they admit a nontrivial one-parameter associated family of isometric deformations or are holomorphic. In this paper, we characterize a new class of complete minimal genuinely deformable Euclidean submanifolds of rank four but now the structure of their second fundamental and the way it gets modified while deforming is quite more involved than in the Kaehler case. This can be seen as a strong indication that the above classification problem is quite challenging. Being minimal, the submanifolds we introduced are also interesting by themselves. In particular, because associated to any complete holomorphic curve in $\C^N$ there is such a submanifold and, beside, the manifold in general is not Kaehler.

Einstein submanifolds with flat normal bundle in space forms are holonomic

A well-known result asserts that any isometric immersion with flat normal bundle of a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature into a space form is (at least locally) holonomic. In this note, we show that this conclusion remains valid for the larger class of Einstein manifolds. As an application, when assuming that the index of relative nullity of the immersion is a positive constant we conclude that the submanifold has the structure of a generalized cylinder over a submanifold with flat normal bundle.
