Precision spectroscopy of the $A^2\Pi$ $\leftarrow$ $X^2\Sigma^+$ transition in BaF

High-resolution spectroscopy on the $A^2\Pi$ - $X^2\Sigma^+$ electronic system of $^{138}$Ba$^{19}$F is performed using a cold molecular beam produced by a buffer gas source. The hyperfine structure in both $X^2\Sigma^+$ ground and $A^2\Pi$ excited states is fully resolved and absolute transition frequencies of individual components are measured at the sub-MHz level making use of frequency-comb laser calibration. Sets of molecular constants for the $X^2\Sigma^+$($v=0,1$) and $A^2\Pi$($v=0,1$) levels are determined, with improved accuracy for the $T_{v',v''}$ band origins and spin-orbit interaction constants for the $A^2\Pi$ excited states, that represent the presently measured highly accurate transitions for low-$J$ states as well as previously determined transition frequencies in Fourier-transform emission studies for rotational levels as high as $J \geq 100$. The extracted molecular constants reproduce the measured transition frequencies at the experimental absolute accuracy of 1 MHz. The work is of relevance for future laser cooling schemes, and is performed in the context of a measurement of the electron dipole moment for which BaF is a target system.

Lifetime Measurements of the $A^2Π_{1/2}$ and $A^2Π_{3/2}$ States in BaF

Time resolved detection of laser induced fluorescence from pulsed excitation of electronic states in barium monofluoride (BaF) molecules has been performed in order to determine the lifetimes of the $A^2Π_{1/2}$ and $A^2Π_{3/2}$ states. The method permits control over experimental parameters such that systematic biases in the interpretation of the data can be controlled to below $10^{-3}$ relative accuracy. The statistically limited values for the lifetimes of the $A^2Π_{1/2}(ν=0)$ and $A^2Π_{3/2}(ν=0)$ states are 57.1(3) ns and 47.9(7)~ns, respectively. The ratio of these values is in good agreement with scaling for the different excitation energies. The investigated molecular states are of relevance for an experimental search for a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron in BaF.

GRB030406 an extremely hard burst outside of the INTEGRAL field of view

Using the IBIS Compton mode, the INTEGRAL satellite is able to detect and localize bright and hard GRBs, which happen outside of the nominal INTEGRAL telescopes field of view. We have developed a method of analyzing such INTEGRAL data to obtain the burst location and spectra. We present the results for the case of GRB030406. The burst is localized with the Compton events, and the location is consistent with the previous Interplanetary Network position. A spectral analysis is possible with the detailed modeling of the detector response for such a far off-axis source with the offset of 36.9 $^\circ$. The average spectrum of the burst is extremely hard: the photon index above 400 \kev is -1.7, with no evidence of a break up to 1.1 \mev at 90% confidence level.

INTEGRAL observations of OAO 1657-415: gamma-ray tomography of a B supergiant

OAO 1657-415 is an accreting pulsar in an eclipsing binary system. We analyzed the INTEGRAL core program observations of this object and obtained the eclipse light curve in the soft gamma-ray band between 15 and 40 keV. We note that the gamma rays from the pulsar allow to probe the density profile of the outer layers of the B supergiant companion. We find that the density profile of the outer layer can be described by a power law with the index $α= 8.5$. We also note that the fit hints toward smaller inclinations of the system within the allowed range 60-90 degrees.
