On the Incidence of Strong MgII Absorbers Along GRB Sightlines

We report on a survey for strong (rest equivalent width W_r >= 1A), intervening MgII systems along the sightlines to long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The GRB spectra which comprise the survey have a heterogeneous mix of resolution and wavelength coverage, but we implement a strict, uniform set of search criteria to derive a well-defined statistical sample. We identify 15 strong MgII absorbers along 14 GRB sightlines (nearly every sightline exhibits at least one absorber) with spectra covering a total pathlength Delta z = 15.5 at a mean redshift = 1.1. In contrast, the predicted incidence of such absorber systems along the same path length to quasar sightlines is only 3.8. The roughly four times higher incidence along GRB sightlines is inconsistent with a statistical fluctuation at greater than 99.9% c.l. Several effects could explain the result: (i) dust within the MgII absorbers obscures faint quasars giving a lower observed incidence along quasar sightlines; (ii) the gas is intrinsic to the GRB event; (iii) the GRB are gravitationally lensed by these absorbers. We present strong arguments against the first two effects and also consider lensing to be an unlikely explanation. The results suggest that at least one of our fundamental beliefs on absorption line research is flawed.

Detection of Wolf-Rayet stars in host galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs): are GRBs produced by runaway massive stars ejected from high stellar density regions ?

We have obtained deep spectroscopic observations of several nearby gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies revealing for the first time the presence of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars and numerous O stars located in rich and compact clusters or star forming regions. Surprisingly, high spatial resolution imaging shows that the GRBs and the associated supernovae did not occur in these regions, but several hundreds of parsec away. Considering various scenarios for GRB progenitors, we do not find any simple explanation of why they should be preferentially born in regions with low stellar densities. All the examined GRBs and associated SNe have occurred 400 to 800 pc from very high density stellar environments including large numbers of WR stars. Such distances can be travelled through at velocities of 100 km/s or larger, assuming the travel time to be the typical life time of WR stars. It leads us to suggest that GRB progenitors may be runaway massive stars ejected from compact massive star clusters. The ejection from such super star clusters may lead to a spin-up of these stars, producing the loss of the hydrogen and/or helium envelopes leading to the origin of the type Ibc supernovae associated with GRBs. If this scenario applies tocd text/Sc all GRBs, it provides a natural explanation of the very small fraction of massive stars that emit a GRB at the end of their life. An alternative to this scenario could be a binary origin for GRBs, but this still requires an explanation of why it would preferentially occur in low stellar density regions.

A new comprehensive set of elemental abundances in DLAs - II. Data analysis and chemical variation studies

We present new elemental abundance studies of seven damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs). Together with the four DLAs analyzed in Dessauges-Zavadsky et al. (2004), we have a sample of eleven DLA galaxies with uniquely comprehensive and homogeneous abundance measurements. These observations allow one to study the abundance patterns of 22 elements and the chemical variations in the interstellar medium of galaxies outside the Local Group. Comparing the gas-phase abundance ratios of these high redshift galaxies, we found that they show low RMS dispersions, reaching only up 2-3 times the statistical errors for the majority of elements. This uniformity is remarkable given that the quasar sightlines cross gaseous regions with HI column densities spanning over one order of magnitude and metallicities ranging from 1/55 to 1/5 solar. The gas-phase abundance patterns of interstellar medium clouds within the DLA galaxies detected along the velocity profiles show, on the other hand, a high dispersion in several abundance ratios, indicating that chemical variations seem to be more confined to individual clouds within the DLA galaxies than to integrated profiles. The analysis of the cloud-to-cloud chemical variations within seven individual DLAs reveals that five of them show statistically significant variations, higher than 0.2 dex at more than 3 sigma. The sources of these variations are both the differential dust depletion and/or ionization effects; however, no evidence for variations due to different star formation histories could be highlighted. These observations place large constraints on the mixing timescales of protogalaxies and on scenarios of galaxy formation within the CDM hierarchical theory. Finally, we provide an astrophysical determination of the oscillator strength of the NiII 1317 transition.

A comprehensive set of elemental abundances in damped Ly-alpha systems: revealing the nature of these high-redshift galaxies

By combining our UVES-VLT spectra of a sample of four damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) toward the quasars Q0100+13, Q1331+17, Q2231-00 and Q2343+12 with the existing HIRES-Keck spectra, we covered the total spectral range from 3150 to 10000 A for the four quasars. This large wavelength coverage and the high quality of the spectra allowed us to measure the column densities of up to 21 ions, namely of 15 elements - N, O, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn. Such a large amount of information is necessary to constrain the photoionization and dust depletion effects, two important steps in order to derive the intrinsic chemical abundance patterns of DLAs. We evaluated the photoionization effects with the help of the Al+/Al++, Fe+/Fe++, N0/N+ and Ar/Si,S ratios, and computed dust corrections. Our analysis revealed that the DLA toward Q2343+12 requires important ionization corrections. The access to the complete series of relatively robust intrinsic elemental abundances in the other three DLAs allowed us to constrain their star formation history, their age and their star formation rate by a detailed comparison with a grid of chemical evolution models for spiral and dwarf irregular galaxies. Our results show that the galaxies associated with these three DLAs in the redshift interval z_abs = 1.7-2.5 are either outer regions of spiral disks (radius >= 8 kpc) or dwarf irregular galaxies (with a bursting or continuous star formation history) with ages varying from some 50 Myr only to >~ 3.5 Gyr and with moderate star formation rates per unit area of -2.1 < log ψ< -1.5 M_{sol} yr^{-1} kpc^{-2}.

A Homogeneous Sample of Sub-DLAs I: Construction of the Sample and Chemical Abundance Measurements

In this first paper of a series, we report on the use of quasar spectra obtained with the UVES high resolution spectrograph and available through the ESO VLT archive to build the first sample of sub-DLA systems, absorbers with HI column densities > 10^{19} cm^{-2} but lower than the classical definition of damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) 2x10^{20} cm^{-2}. A systematic investigation of the properties of these systems and a comparison with those of the DLAs (Paper II of this series; Peroux et al. 2003b) is expected to provide new clues on the association of high column density absorbers with galaxies and on the overall evolution of the neutral hydrogen gas mass and metal content in the Universe. In the spectra of 22 quasars which were found suitable for a sub-DLA search, we identified 12 sub-DLAs and 1 borderline case between the DLA and sub-DLA systems in the redshift interval z = 1.8-4.3. We measured the column densities of HI and up to 16 ions of low-, intermediate- and high-ionization. We further investigated the significance of the ionization corrections in the determination of the chemical abundances from the low-ionization ions in the sub-DLA HI column density range. Using the predictions of different ion ratios as a function of the ionization parameter computed with the CLOUDY software package, we have estimated that with the exception of one case, the ionization corrections to the abundances of 9 systems for which we were able to constrain the ionization parameter, are lower than 0.2 dex for all of the elements except AlII and ZnII down to HI column densities of log N(HI) = 19.3 cm^{-2}. We finally present the first sub-DLA chemical abundance database which contains the abundance measurements of 11 different elements (O, C, Si, N, S, Mg, Al, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Cr).

Chemical Evolution of Damped Lyman Alpha Systems

By means of detailed chemical evolution models for galaxies of different morphological types (i.e. spirals, irregular/starburst galaxies and ellipticals) we study the nature of Damped Lyman-Alpha systems. Our concern is to infer which systems represent likely candidates for the DLA population and which do not. By focusing on individual systems, we can derive some constraints on both the nature of the associated galaxy and its age. Our results indicate that, owing to their high metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios, big spheroids represent unlikely DLA candidates whereas spirals (observed at different galactocentric distances) and irregulars are ideal sites where DLA absorptions can occur.

Metal abundances and kinematics of quasar absorbers - II. Absorption systems toward Q0347-3819 and APM BR J0307-4945

Detailed Monte Carlo Inversion analysis of the spectral lines from three Lyman limit systems (LLS) [N(HI) > 10^{17} cm^-2] and nine lower N(HI) systems [2 10^{14} < N(HI) < 2 10^{16} cm^-2] observed in the VLT/UVES spectra of Q0347-3819 (in the range 2.21 <= z <= 3.14) and of APM BR J0307-4945 (at z = 4.21 and 4.81) is presented. Combined with the results from a previous work, the analyzed LLSs show that they are a heterogeneous population originating in different environments. A functional dependence of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion sigma_v on the absorber size L is confirmed: the majority of the analyzed systems follow the scaling relation sigma_v ~ (N_H L)^{0.3} (with N_H being the total gas column density). This means that most absorbers may be related to virialized systems like galaxies or their halos. Previously noted enhancement of the metal content in small size systems is also confirmed: metallicities of Z ~ (1/3-1/2)Z_solar are found in systems with L < 0.4 kpc, whereas we observe much lower metal abundances in systems with larger linear sizes. For the first time in LLSs, a pronounced [alpha-element/iron-peak] enrichment is revealed: the absorber at z = 2.21 shows [O/Fe] = 0.65+/-0.11, [Si/Fe] = 0.51+/-0.11, and [Mg/Fe] = 0.38+/-0.11. Several absorption systems exhibit characteristics which are very similar to that observed in high-velocity clouds in the Milky Way and may be considered as high-redshift counterparts of Galactic HVCs.

New detections of Mn, Ti and Mg in damped Ly-alpha systems: Toward reconciling the dust/nucleosynthesis degeneracy

We have combined new high resolution UVES-VLT observations of a sample of four damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) at redshifts between z_abs = 1.7-2.5 with the existing HIRES-Keck spectra to undertake a comprehensive study of their physical conditions and their abundances of up to 15 elements. In this paper, we present abundance measurements for Mn, Ti and Mg which are among the first presented in the literature at these redshifts. We confirm the underabundance of Mn with respect to Fe as observed in lower redshift DLAs and a trend with decreasing metallicity very similar to the one observed in Galactic metal-poor stars. This agreement between the Mn/Fe ratios in DLAs and in Galactic stars suggests that the DLAs and the Milky Way share some similarities in their star formation histories. However, these similarities must be cautiously interpreted and investigated in light of all of the elements observed in the DLAs. We have obtained a first measurement and a significant upper limit of the Ti abundance at z_abs ~ 2 from the TiII lines at lambda_rest > 3000 A, and we discuss how the relative abundance of this highly depleted element can be used to prove unambiguously any enhancement of the abundance of the alpha-elements relative to Fe-peak elements. We present the abundances of Mg for two DLAs in addition to the single Mg measurement existing in the literature. Contrary to the trend expected from differential depletion, the [Mg/Si,S] ratios tend to be over-solar. The effect is at the level of the measurement errors, but worth investigating in a larger sample because it could be suggestive of a peculiar nucleosynthesis effect.

A new constraint on cosmological variability of the proton-to-electron mass ratio

Exotic cosmologies predict variability of the fundamental physical constants over the cosmic time. Using the VLT/UVES high resolution spectra of the quasar Q0347-3819 and unblended electronic - vibrational - rotational lines of the H2 molecule identified at z = 3.025 we test possible changes in the proton - to - electron mass ratio mu_0 = m_p/m_e over the period of 11 Gyr. We obtained a new constraint on the time - averaged variation rate of mu_0 of |d mu /d t /mu_0| < 5 10^{-15} yr^{-1} (1 sigma c.l.). The estimated 1 sigma uncertainty interval of the |Delta mu/mu_0| ratio of about 0.004% implies that since the time when the H2 spectrum was formed at z = 3.025, mu_0 has not changed by more than a few thousands of a percent.

H2, D/H and the CMBR Temperature at z = 3.025 Toward QSO 0347-3819

A new molecular hydrogen cloud has been identified at z = 3.025 in the absorption-line spectrum of the quasar 0347-3819 observed with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope. At the same redshift numerous metal lines and the DI Ly-5, Ly-8, Ly-10, and Ly-12 lines were detected. The simultaneous analysis of metal and hydrogen lines yielded D/H = (3.75 +/- 0.25) 10^{-5}. This value is consistent with SBBN if the baryon-to-photon ratio, eta, lies within the range 4.4 10^{-10} <= eta <= 5.3 10^{-10}, implying Omega_b h^2_{100} = 0.018 +/- 0.002 (1 sigma c.l.). The population of the ground state rotational levels of H2 from J = 0 to 5 revealed a Galactic-type UV radiation field in the H2-bearing cloud ruling out UV pumping as an important mechanism for CII. Accounting for two other important excitation mechanisms such as collisions and FIR photon absorption, we were able to measure for the first time the temperature of the cosmic background radiation at z > 3, T_{CMBR} = 12.1^{+1.7}_{-3.2} K, from the analysis of the CII fine-structure lines. This result supports the value of T_{CMBR} = 10.968 +/- 0.004 K predicted at z = 3.025 by the hot Big Bang cosmology.

The cosmic microwave background radiation temperature at z = 3.025 toward QSO 0347--3819

From the analysis of the CII fine-structure population ratio in the damped Ly_alpha system at z = 3.025 toward the quasar Q0347--3819 we derive an upper bound of 14.6 (+/- 0.2) K on the cosmic microwave background temperature regardless the presence of other different excitation mechanisms. The analysis of the ground state rotational level populations of H_2 detected in the system reveals a Galactic-type UV radiation field ruling out UV pumping as an important excitation mechanism for CII. The low dust content estimated from the Cr/Zn ratio indicates that the IR dust emission can also be neglected. When the collisional excitation is considered, we measure a temperature for the cosmic background radiation of T = 12.1 (+1.7, -3.2) K. The results are in agreement with the T = 10.968 (+/-) 0.004 K predicted by the hot Big Bang cosmology at z = 3.025.

Molecular hydrogen, deuterium and metal abundances in the damped Ly-alpha system at z = 3.025 toward QSO 0347-3819

We have detected in high resolution spectra of the quasar Q0347--3819 obtained with the UVES spectrograph at the VLT/Kueyen telescope over 80 absorption features in the Lyman and Werner H2 bands at the redshift of a damped Ly-alpha system at z = 3.025. The z = 3.025 system spans over 80 km/s and exhibits a multicomponent velocity structure in the metal lines. The main component at z = 3.024855 shows a total H2 column density N(H2) = (4.10\pm0.21)*10^{14} cm^{-2} and a fractional molecular abundance f(H2) = (1.94\pm0.10)*10^{-6} derived from the H2 lines arising from J=0 to 5 rotational levels of the ground electronic-vibrational state. For the first time we unambiguously reveal a pronounced [alpha-element/iron-peak] enhancement of [O,Si/Zn] = 0.6\pm0.1 (6 sigma c.l.) at high redshift. The simultaneous analysis of metal and hydrogen lines leads to D/H = (3.75\pm0.25)*10^{-5}. This value is consistent with standard big bang nucleosynthesis if the baryon-to-photon ratio, eta, lies within the range 4.37*10^{-10} <= eta <= 5.32*10^{-10}, implying 0.016 <= Omega_b h^2_100 <= 0.020.

UVES observations of a damped Ly-alpha system at z_abs = 4.466 towards the quasar APM BR J0307-4945

We present the first high-resolution (6.2 to 7.7 km/s FWHM) spectra of the APM BR J0307-4945 quasar at z_em = 4.73 obtained with UVES on the 8.2m VLT Kueyen telescope. We focus our analysis on a damped Ly-alpha (DLA) system at z_abs = 4.466 with a neutral hydrogen column density N(HI) = (4.68 +/- 0.97) 10^{20} cm^{-2}. It is the most distant DLA system known to the present date, observed when the age of the universe was only 1.3 Gyr. It shows complex low- and high-ionization line profiles spanning ~240 and 300 km/s in velocity space respectively. We derive accurate abundances for N, O, Al, Si and Fe, and place a lower limit on C and an upper limit on Ni: [N/H] = -3.07 +/- 0.15, [O/H] = -1.63 +/- 0.19, [Al/H] = -1.79 +/- 0.11, [Si/H] = -1.54 +/- 0.11, [Fe/H] = -1.97 +/- 0.19, [C/H] > -1.63 and [Ni/H] < -2.35. The derived high metallicity, 1/90 solar, shows that this very young absorber (< 1.3 Gyr) has already experienced a significant metal enrichment. The [O/Si] ratio is nearly solar suggesting a limited amount of dust, the relative [Si,O/Fe] abundance ratios show a similar enhancement as observed in the Milky Way stars with comparable metallicities, and the [N/O] ratio is very low. All these results point to an enrichment pattern dominated by Type II supernovae which suggests a Milky Way type evolutionary model.
