Pion scattering in the isospin I=2 channel from elongated lattices

Pion-pion elastic scattering in the isospin I=2 channel is investigated in two-flavor dynamical lattice QCD. Six ensembles are used with lattices elongated in one of the spatial dimensions at two quark masses corresponding to a pion mass of 315 MeV and 226 MeV. The energy of the low-lying states below the inelastic threshold are extracted in each case using the standard variational method. The extracted finite-volume spectrum is fitted by the inverse amplitude method simultaneously for both quark masses and extrapolated thereafter to the physical point. The resulting phase-shifts and scattering length are compared with those from experiment, leading-order chiral perturbation theory and other lattice studies. Our calculations match the experimental results.

S- and p-wave structure of $S=-1$ meson-baryon scattering in the resonance region

We perform a simultaneous analysis of s- and p-waves of the $S=-1$ meson-baryon scattering amplitude using all low-energy experimental data. For the first time, differential cross section data are included for chiral unitary coupled-channel models. From this model s- and p-wave amplitudes are extracted and we observe both well-known $I(J^P)=0(1/2^-)$ s-wave states as well as a new $I(J^P)=1(1/2^+)$ state absent in quark models and lattice QCD results. Multiple statistical and phenomenological tests suggest that, while the data clearly require an $I=1$ p-wave resonance, the new state just accounts for the absence of the decuplet $\Sigma(1385)3/2^+$ in the model.

Three-body Unitarity with Isobars Revisited

The particle exchange model of hadron interactions can be used to describe three-body scattering under the isobar assumption. In this study we start from the 3->3 scattering amplitude for spinless particles, which contains an isobar-spectator scattering amplitude. Using a Bethe-Salpeter Ansatz for the latter, we derive a relativistic three-dimensional scattering equation that manifestly fulfills three-body unitarity and two-body unitarity for the sub-amplitudes. This property holds for energies above breakup and also in the presence of resonances in the sub-amplitudes.

Role of the strange quark in the rho(770) meson

Recently, the GWU lattice group has evaluated high-precision phase-shift data for $\pi\pi$ scattering in the $I = 1$, $J = 1$ channel. Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory describes these data well around the resonance region and for different pion masses. Moreover, it allows to extrapolate to the physical point and estimate the effect of the missing $K\bar{K}$ channel in the two-flavor lattice calculation. The absence of the strange quark in the lattice data leads to a lower $\rho$ mass, and the analysis with U$\chi$PT shows that the $K \bar{K}$ channel indeed pushes the $\pi\pi$-scattering phase shift upward, having a surprisingly large effect on the $\rho$-mass. The inelasticity is shown to be compatible with the experimental data. The analysis is then extended to all available two-flavor lattice simulations and similar mass shifts are observed. Chiral extrapolations of $N_f = 2 + 1$ lattice simulations for the $\rho(770)$ are also reported.

The pole structure of the Lambda(1405) in a recent QCD simulation

The $\Lambda(1405)$ baryon is difficult to detect in experiment, absent in many quark model calculations, and supposedly manifested through a two-pole structure. Its uncommon properties made it subject to numerous experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Lattice-QCD eigenvalues for different quark masses were recently reported by the Adelaide group. We compare these eigenvalues to predictions of a model based on Unitary Chiral Perturbation Theory. The UCHPT calculation predicts the quark mass dependence remarkably well. It also explains the overlap pattern with different meson-baryon components, mainly $\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar KN$, at different quark masses. More accurate lattice QCD data are required to draw definite conclusions on the nature of the $\Lambda(1405)$.

Chiral Dynamics and S-wave Contributions in Semileptonic B decays

The flavor-changing neutral current process $b\to s l^+l^-$ is beneficial to testing the standard model and hunting for new physics scenarios. In exclusive decay modes like $B\to K^*(892)l^+l^-$, the S-wave effects may not be negligible and thus have to be reliably estimated. Using the scalar form factors derived from dispersion relations in two channels and matched to Chiral Perturbation Theory, we investigate the S-wave contributions in $\bar B^0\to K^- \pi^+ l^+l^-$, with the $K\pi$ invariant mass lying in the vicinity of the mass of $K^*(892)$, and the $B_s\to K^- K^+ l^+l^-$ with $m_{KK}\sim m_{\phi}$. We find that the S-wave will modify differential decay widths by about 10% in the process of $\bar B^0\to K^- \pi^+ l^+l^-$ and about 5% in $B_s\to K^- K^+ l^+l^-$. A forward-backward asymmetry for the charged kaon in the final state arises from the interference between the S-wave and P-wave contributions. The measurement of this asymmetry offers a new way to determine the variation of the $K\pi$ S-wave phase versus the invariant mass.

Chiral unitary theory of scalar mesons in a finite volume

We develop a scheme for the extraction of the properties of the scalar mesons $f_0(600)$, $f_0(980)$, and $a_0(980)$ from lattice QCD data. This scheme is based on a two-channel chiral unitary approach with fully relativistic propagators in a finite volume. In order to discuss the feasibility of finding the mass and width of the scalar resonances, we analyze synthetic lattice data with a fixed error assigned, and show that the framework can be indeed used for an accurate determination of resonance pole positions in the multi-channel scattering.

Helicity Amplitudes of the Lambda(1670) and two Lambda(1405) as dynamically generated resonances

We determine the helicity amplitudes A_1/2 and radiative decay widths in the transition Lambda(1670) to gamma Y (Y=Lambda or Sigma^0). The Lambda(1670) is treated as a dynamically generated resonance in meson-baryon chiral dynamics. We obtain the radiative decay widths of the Lambda(1670) to gamma Lambda as 3 \pm 2 keV and to gamma Sigma^0 as 120 \pm 50 keV. Also, the Q^2 dependence of the helicity amplitudes A_1/2 is calculated. We find that the K Xi component in the Lambda(1670) structure, mainly responsible for the dynamical generation of this resonance, is also responsible for the significant suppression of the decay ratio Gamma_{gamma Lambda}/Gamma_{gamma Sigma^0}. A measurement of the ratio would, thus, provide direct access to the nature of the Lambda(1670). To compare the result for the Lambda(1670), we calculate the helicity amplitudes A_1/2 for the two states of the Lambda(1405). Also, the analytic continuation of Feynman parameterized integrals of more complicated loop amplitudes to the complex plane is developed which allows for an internally consistent evaluation of A_1/2.

The phase and pole structure of the N*(1535) in piN-->piN and gammaN-->piN

The nature of some baryonic resonances is still an unresolved issue. The case of the N*(1535) is particularly interesting in this respect due to the nearby etaN threshold and interference with the N*(1650). The N*(1535) has been described as a threshold effect, as a genuine 3-quark resonance, or as dynamically generated from the interaction of the octet of baryons with the octet of mesons. In the scheme of dynamical generation, predictions for the interaction of the N*(1535) with the photon can be made. In this study, we simultaneously analyze the role of the N*(1535) in the piN-->piN and gammaN-->piN reactions and compare to the respective amplitudes from partial wave analyses. This test is very sensitive to the meson-baryon components of the N*(1535).

The role of the background in the extraction of resonance contributions from meson-baryon scattering

The separation of background and resonance contributions in pion-nucleon scattering is an often discussed issue. We investigate to what extent the background can be separated from the pole contribution. For illustration we use results from an analytic model for the meson-baryon interaction derived from meson exchange. We focus on the two distinct cases of an elastic and a highly inelastic resonance, namely the Delta(1232) and the Delta*(1700). Our results are also relevant for studies of dynamically generated resonances and attempts to extract bare quantities from hadronic models to be compared to quark model results.

The s-wave pion-nucleus optical potential

We calculate the s-wave part of the pion-nucleus optical potential using a unitarized chiral approach that has been previously used to simultaneously describe pionic hydrogen and deuterium data as well as low energy pi N scattering in the vacuum. This energy dependent model allows for additional isoscalar parts in the potential from multiple rescattering. We consider Pauli blocking and pion polarization in an asymmetric nuclear matter environment. Also, higher order corrections of the pi N amplitude are included. The model can accommodate the repulsion required by phenomenological fits, though the theoretical uncertainties are bigger than previously thought. At the same time, we also find an enhancement of the isovector part compatible with empirical determinations.

Charge fluctuations and electric mass in a hot meson gas

Net-Charge fluctuations in a hadron gas are studied using an effective hadronic interaction. The emphasis of this work is to investigate the corrections of hadronic interactions to the charge fluctuations of a non-interacting resonance gas. Several methods, such as loop, density and virial expansions are employed. The calculations are also extended to SU(3) and some resummation schemes are considered. Although the various corrections are sizable individually, they cancel to a large extent. As a consequence we find that charge fluctuations are rather well described by the free resonance gas.

The radiative decay of the $Λ(1405)$ and its two-pole structure

We evaluate theoretically the radiative decay widths into $γΛ$ and $γΣ^0$ of the two poles of the $Λ(1405)$ found in chiral unitary theories and we find quite different results for each of the two poles. We show that, depending on which reaction is used to measure the $Λ(1405)$ radiative decays, one gives more weight to one or the other pole, resulting in quite different shapes in the $γΛ(Σ^0)$ invariant mass distributions. Our results for the high-energy pole agree with those of the empirical determination of the $γΛ$ and $γΣ^0$ radiative widths (based on an isobar model fitting of the $K^-p$ atom data), which are sometimes referred to as ``experimental data''. We have made a detailed study of the $K^-p\toπ^0γΛ(Σ^0)$ and $π^-p\to K^0γΛ(Σ^0)$ reactions and have shown that they, indeed, lead to different shapes for the $γΛ(Σ^0)$ invariant mass distributions.

Recent developments in chiral dynamics of hadrons and hadrons in nuclei

In this talk I present recent developments in the field of hadronic physics and hadrons in the nuclear medium. I review the unitary chiral approach to meson baryon interaction and address the topics of the two dynamically generated $Λ(1405)$ resonances, with experiments testing it, the $Λ(1520)$ and $Δ(1700)$ resonances, plus the $Λ(1520)$, $Σ(1385)$ and $ω$ in the nuclear medium.

Radiative decay of the Delta(1700)

Electromagnetic properties provide information about the structure of strongly interacting systems and allow for independent tests of hadronic models. The radiative decay of the Delta(1700) is studied, which appears dynamically generated in a coupled channel approach from the rescattering of the (3/2^+) decuplet of baryons with the (0^-) octet of pseudoscalar mesons. The radiative decay is predicted from the well-known couplings of the photon to the mesons and hadrons which constitute this resonance in the dynamical picture.

Clues to the nature of the Delta^*(1700) resonance from pion- and photon-induced reactions

We make a study of the (pi^- p --> K^0 pi^0 Lambda), (pi^+ p --> K^+ pi^+ Lambda), (K^+\bar{K}^0 p), (K^+ pi^+ Sigma^0), (K^+ pi^0 Sigma^+), and (eta pi^+ p) reactions, in which the basic dynamics is given by the excitation of the Delta^*(1700) resonance which subsequently decays into (K Sigma^*(1385)) or (Delta(1232) eta). In a similar way we also study the (gamma p --> K^0 pi^+ Lambda), (K^+ pi^- Sigma^+), (K^+ pi^+ Sigma^-), (K^0 pi^0 Sigma^+), and (eta pi^0 p) related reactions. The cross sections are proportional to the square of the coupling of Delta^*(1700) to (Sigma^*K), (Delta eta) for which there is no experimental information but which is provided in the context of coupled channels chiral unitary theory where the Delta^*(1700) is dynamically generated. Within present theoretical and experimental uncertainties one can claim a global qualitative agreement between theory and experiment. We provide a list of items which need to be improved in order to make further progress along these lines.

Radiative decay of the Lambda(1520)

A recently developed non-perturbative chiral approach to dynamically generate the (3/2^-) baryon resonances has been extended to investigate the radiative decays Lambda^*(1520) --> gamma Lambda(1116) and Lambda^*(1520) --> gamma Sigma^0(1193). We show that the Lambda^*(1520) decay into gamma Lambda is an ideal test for the need of extra components of the resonance beyond those provided by the chiral approach since the largest meson-baryon components give no contribution to this decay. The case is different for gamma Sigma decay where the theory agrees with experiment, though the large uncertainties of these data call for more precise measurements.

Chiral dynamics in the gamma p --> pi^0 eta p and gamma p --> pi^0 K^0 Sigma^+ reactions

Using a chiral unitary approach for meson-baryon scattering in the strangeness zero sector, where the $N^*(1535)$ resonance is dynamically generated, we study the reactions $γp \to π^0 ηp$ and $γp \to π^0 K^0 Σ^+$ at photon energies at which the final states are produced close to threshold. Among several reaction mechanisms, we find the most important is the excitation of the $Δ^*(1700)$ state which subsequently decays into a pseudoscalar meson and a baryon belonging to the $Δ(1232)$ decuplet. Hence, the reaction provides useful information with which to test current theories of the dynamical generation of the low-lying $3/2^-$ states. The first reaction is shown to lead to sizable cross sections and the $N^*(1535)$ resonance shape is seen clearly in the $ηp$ invariant mass distribution. The same dynamical model is shown to lead to much smaller cross sections at low energies in the second reaction. Predictions are made for cross sections and invariant mass distributions which can be compared with forthcoming experiments at ELSA.
