Spin excitations of the correlated semiconductor FeSi probed by THz radiation

By direct measurements of the complex optical conductivity $σ(ν)$ of FeSi we have discovered a broad absorption peak centered at frequency $ν_{0}(4.2 K) \approx 32 cm^{-1}$ that develops at temperatures below 20 K. This feature is caused by spin-polaronic states formed in the middle of the gap in the electronic density of states. We observe the spin excitations between the electronic levels split by the exchange field of $H_{e}=34\pm 6 T$. Spin fluctuations are identified as the main factor determining the formation of the spin polarons and the rich magnetic phase diagram of FeSi.

Electrodynamic Response of the Charge Ordering Phase: Dielectric and Optical Studies of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

We report on the anisotropic response, the charge and lattice dynamics of normal and charge-ordered phases with horizontal stripes in single crystals of the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 determined by dc resistivity, dielectric and optical spectroscopy. An overdamped Drude response and a small conductivity anisotropy observed in optics is consistent with a weakly temperature dependent dc conductivity and anisotropy at high temperatures. The splitting of the molecular vibrations nu27(Bu) evidences the abrupt onset of static charge order below TCO=136 K. The drop of optical conductivity measured within the ab plane of the crystal is characterized by an isotropic gap that opens of approximately 75 meV with several phonons becoming pronounced below. Conversely, the dc conductivity anisotropy rises steeply, attaining at 50 K a value 25 times larger than at high temperatures. The dielectric response within this plane reveals two broad relaxation modes of strength Deltaepsilon_LD ~= 5000 and Deltaepsilon_SD ~= 400, centered at 1 kHz < f_LD < 100 MHz and f_SD ~= 1 MHz. The anisotropy of the large-mode (LD) mean relaxation time closely follows the temperature behavior of the respective dc conductivity ratio. We argue that this phason-like excitation is best described as a long-wavelength excitation of a 2kF bond-charge density wave expected theoretically for layered quarter-filled electronic systems with horizontal stripes. Conversely, based on the theoretically expected ferroelectric-like nature of the charge-ordered phase, we associate the small-mode (SD) relaxation with the motion of domain-wall pairs, created at the interface between two types of domains, along the a and b axes. We also consider other possible theoretical interpretations and discuss their limitations.

Comprehensive transport studies of anisotropy and ordering phenomena in quasi-one-dimensional (TMTTF)2X salts (X = PF6, AsF6, SbF6; BF4, ClO4, ReO4)

The temperature dependent dc resistivity of the quasi-one-dimensional organic salts (TMTTF)2X ( X = PF6, AsF6, SbF6; BF4, ClO4, ReO4) has been measured in all three crystal directions in order to investigate anisotropy, localization effects, charge and anion ordering phenomena at low temperatures. For all compounds and directions we extract the transport mechanisms in different regimes. The data are thoroughly analyzed, related to structural properties, and extensively discussed in view of previous studies and latest theories. It becomes apparent that the anions have a severe influence on the physical properties of the TMTTF salts.

Optical investigations of the chemical pressurized EuFe2(As1-xPx)2: an s-wave superconductor with strong interband interaction

Superconducting EuFe2(As0.82P0.18)2 single crystals are investigated by infrared spectroscopy in a wide frequency range. Below Tc=28K a superconducting gap forms at 2Δ_{0} = 9.5 meV = 3.8 k_B T_c causing the reflectivity to sharply rise to unity at low frequency. In the range of the gap the optical conductivity can be perfectly described by BCS theory with an $s$-wave gap and no nodes. From our analysis of the temperature dependent conductivity and spectral weight at T>T_c, we deduce an increased interband coupling between hole- and electron-sheets on the Fermi surface when $T$ approaches T_c.

Bandwidth tuning triggers interplay of charge order and superconductivity in two-dimensional organic materials

We observe charge-order fluctuations in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $β^{\prime\prime}$-(BEDT-TTF)2 SF5 CH2 CF2 SO3 both by means of vibrational spectroscopy, locally probing the fluctuating charge order, and investigating the in-plane dynamical response by infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The decrease of effective electronic interaction in an isostructural metal suppresses both charge-order fluctuations and superconductivity, pointing on their interplay. We compare the results of our experiments with calculations on the extended Hubbard model.

Two-band BCS superconductivity in Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2

The conductivity and permittivity optical spectra of iron-pnictide Ba(Fe0.9Co0.1)2As2 film (Tc=20 K) are analyzed. In the superconducting state, at all temperatures up to Tc the temperature dependences of the magnetic field penetration depth and of the superconducting condensate density are well described within the generalized two-band BCS model with intraband and interband pairing interactions considered. It is shown that the smaller superconducting energy gap 2Δ = 3.7 meV develops in the electronic subsystem while the larger gap 2Δ >= 7 meV opens in the hole subsystem. The normal state parameters (plasma frequencies and scattering rates) of electron and hole conduction bands are determined. At all temperatures the obtained data are consistent with the results of electronic photoemission experiments on Ba(Fe1-x Cox)2As2.

Nodes in the Order Parameter of Superconducting Iron Pnictides Observed by Infrared Spectroscopy

The temperature and frequency dependences of the conductivity are derived from optical reflection and transmission measurements of electron doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals and films. The data is consistent with gap nodes or possibly a very small gap in the crossover region between these two possibilities. This can arise when one of the several pockets known to exist in these systems has extended s-wave gap symmetry with an anisotropic piece canceling or nearly so the isotropic part in some momentum direction. Alternatively, a node can be lifted by impurity scattering which reduces anisotropy. We find that the smaller gap on the hole pocket at the $Γ$ point in the Brillouin zone is isotropic s-wave while the electron pocket at the $M$ point has a larger gap which is anisotropic and falls in the crossover region.

Eliashberg Analysis of Optical Spectra Reveals Strong Coupling of Charge Carriers to Spin Fluctuations in Superconducting Iron Pnictides

The temperature and frequency dependences of the optical conductivity of Co and Ni-doped BaFe2As2 are analyzed and the electron-boson spectral density a2F(w) extracted using Eliashberg's formalism. The characteristic energy of a large peak in the spectrum around 10 meV coincide with the resonance peak in the spin excitation spectra, giving compelling evidence that in iron-based superconductors spin fluctuations strongly couple to the charge carriers and mediate superconductivity. In addition the spectrum is found to evolve with temperature towards a less structured background at higher energies as in the spin susceptibility.

Electrodynamics of electron doped iron-pnictide superconductors: Normal state properties

The electrodynamic properties of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_As$_{2}$ single crystals have been investigated by reflectivity measurements in a wide frequency range. In the metallic state, the optical conductivity consists of a broad incoherent background and a narrow Drude-like component which determines the transport properties; only the latter contribution strongly depends on the composition and temperature. This subsystem reveals a $T^2$ behavior in the dc resistivity and scattering rate disclosing a hidden Fermi-liquid behavior in the 122 iron-pnictide family. An extended Drude analysis yields the frequency dependence of the effective mass (with $m^*/m_b\approx 5$ in the static limit) and scattering rate that does not disclose a simple power law. The spectral weight shifts to lower energies upon cooling; a significant fraction is not recovered within the infrared range of frequencies.

Collective Excitations in the Charge-Ordered Phase of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3

The charge response of charge-ordered state in the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 is characterized by dc resistivity, dielectric and optical spectroscopy in different crystallographic directions within the two-dimensional conduction layer. Two dielectric modes are detected. The large mode is related to the phason-like excitation of the 2kF bond-charge density wave which forms in the ab plane. The small dielectric mode is associated with the motion of domain-wall pairs along the a- and b-axes between two types of domains which are created due to inversion symmetry breaking.

Universal Decomposition of the Low-Frequency Conductivity Spectra of Iron-Pnictides Uncovering Fermi-Liquid Behavior

Infrared reflectivity measurements on 122 iron-pnictides reveal the existence of two electronic subsystems. The one gapped due to the spin-density-wave transition in the parent materials, such as EuFe$_2$As$_{2}$, is responsible for superconductivity in the doped compounds, like Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$. Analyzing the dc resistivity and scattering rate of this contribution, a hidden $T^2$ dependence is found, indicating that superconductivity evolves out of a Fermi-liquid state. The second subsystem gives rise to incoherent background, present in all 122 compounds, which is basically temperature independent, but affected by the superconducting transition.

Direct observation of a nodeless superconducting energy gap in the optical conductivity of iron-pnictides

The temperature-dependent optical reflectivity and complex transmissivity of an epitaxially grown Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_2$As$_2$ thin film were measured and the optical conductivity and permittivity evaluated over a wide frequency range. The opening of the superconducting gap $2Δ_0 = 3.7$ meV below $T_c\approx 20$ K is {\em directly} observed by a completely vanishing optical conductivity. The temperature and frequency dependent electrodynamic properties of Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_2$As$_2$ in the superconducting state agree well with the BCS predictions with no nodes in the order parameter. The spectral weight of the condensate $1.94\times 10^7 {\rm cm}^{-2}$ corresponds to a London penetration depth $λ_L=3600$ Å.

Superfluid density of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}M_x$)$_2$As$_2$ from optical experiments

The temperature dependence of the $ab$-plane optical reflectivity of Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$ single crystals is measured in a wide spectral range. Upon entering the superconducting regime, the reflectivity in both compounds increases considerably at low frequency, leading to a clear gap in the optical conductivity below 100 cm$^{-1}$. From the analysis of the complex conductivity spectra we obtain the penetration depth $λ(T)=(3500\pm 350)$ Åfor Ba(Fe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08})_2$As$_{2}$ and $(3000\pm 300)$ Åfor Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05})_2$As$_{2}$. The calculated superfluid density $ρ_s$ of both compounds nicely fits the scaling relation $ρ_s=(125\pm 25)σ_{dc}T_c$.

Origin of Low-Energy Excitations in Charge-Ordered Manganites

The low-energy excitations in the charge-ordered phase of polycrystalline La0.25Ca0.75MnO3 are explored by frequency-domain terahertz spectroscopy. In the frequency range from 4 cm^-1 to 700 cm^-1 (energies 0.4 meV to 90 meV) and at temperatures down to 5 K, we do not detect any feature that can be associated with the collective response of the spatially modulated charge continuum. In the antiferromagnetically ordered phase, broad absorption bands appear in the conductivity and permittivity spectra around 30 cm^-1 and 100 cm^-1 which are assigned to former acoustic phonons optically activated due to a fourfold superstructure in the crystal lattice. Our results indicate that characteristic energies of collective excitations of the charge-ordered phase in La0:25Ca0:75MnO3, if any, lie below 1 meV. At our lowest frequencies of only few wavenumbers a strong relaxation is observed above 100 K connected to the formation of the charge-ordered state.

Deconfinement transition and dimensional crossover in the Bechgaard-Fabre salts: pressure- and temperature-dependent optical investigations

The infrared response of the organic conductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and the Mott insulator (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ are investigated as a function of temperature and pressure and for the polarization parallel and perpendicular to the molecular stacks. By applying external pressure on (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$, the Mott gap rapidly diminishes until the deconfinement transition occurs when the gap energy is approximately twice the interchain transfer integral. In its deconfined state (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ exhibits a crossover from a quasi-one-dimensional to a higher-dimensional metal upon reducing the temperature. For (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ this dimensional crossover is observed either with increase in external pressure or with decrease in temperature. We quantitatively determine the dimensional crossover line in the pressure-temperature diagram based on the degree of coherence in the optical response perpendicular to the molecular stacks.

Pressure-induced structural phase transition in the Bechgaard-Fabre salts

The crystal structures of the quasi-one-dimensional organic salts (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ were studied by pressure-dependent x-ray diffraction up to 10 GPa at room temperature. The unit-cell parameters exhibit a clear anomaly due to a structural phase transition at 8.5 and 5.5 GPa for (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$, respectively.

Effects of the magnetic orderings on the dynamical conductivity: optical investigations of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

The magnetic, transport and optical properties of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been investigated parallel and perpendicular to the $ab$-plane. The anisotropy $ρ_c/ρ_{ab}\approx 8$ depends only slightly on temperature. In both orientations, the spin-density wave transition at $T_{\rm SDW}=189$ K shows up as a considerable increase in the dc resistivity. Susceptibility measurements evidence the magnetic order of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments at $T_N=19$ K with little influence on the electronic transport taking place in the FeAs layers. Polarization-dependent infrared spectroscopy reveals strongly anisotropic optical properties and yields a carrier density of only $4.2\times 10^{21} {\rm cm}^{-3}$ and a bandmass of $m_b=2m_0$. A sizeable Drude contribution is present at all temperatures and narrows upon cooling. Below $T_{\rm SDW}$, the spin-density-wave gap develops in the in-plane optical conductivity; no appreciable change is detected for the perpendicular polarization. Modifications in the phonon features are associated with changes of the electronic properties at $T_{\rm SDW}$. The extended Drude analysis yields a linear behavior of the frequency-dependent scattering rate below $T_{\rm SDW}$, indicating an interaction between the charge carriers and spin fluctuations in the spin-density-wave state.

Direct Observation of Quantum Coherence in Single-Molecule Magnets

Direct evidence of quantum coherence in a single-molecule magnet in frozen solution is reported with coherence times as long as T2 = 630 ns. We can strongly increase the coherence time by modifying the matrix in which the single-molecule magnets are embedded. The electron spins are coupled to the proton nuclear spins of both the molecule itself and interestingly, also to those of the solvent. The clear observation of Rabi oscillations indicates that we can manipulate the spin coherently, an essential prerequisite for performing quantum computations.
