Vanishing RKKY interactions in Ce-based cage compounds

We report the results of thermodynamic measurements in external magnetic field of the cubic Ce-based cage compounds Ce$T_{2}$Cd$_{20}$ ($T$ = Ni,Pd). Our analysis of the heat-capacity data shows that the $\Gamma_7$ doublet is the ground state multiplet of the Ce$^{3+}$ ions. Consequently, for the $\Gamma_7$ doublet it can be theoretically shown that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the localized Ce moments mediated by the conduction electrons, must vanish at temperatures much lower than the energy separating the ground state doublet from the first excited $\Gamma_8$ quartet. Our findings provide an insight as to why no long range order has been observed in these compounds down to temperatures in the millikelvin range.

Heat capacity of URu$_{2-x}$Os$_x$Si$_2$ at low temperatures

We perform measurements of the heat capacity as a function of temperature in URu$_{2-x}$Os$_x$Si$_2$ alloys. Our experimental results show that the critical temperature of the second-order phase transition increases while the value of the Sommerfeld coefficient in the ordered state decreases with an increase in osmium concentration. We also observe the increase in the values of the heat capacity at the critical temperature as well as a broadening of the critical fluctuations region with an increase in $x$. We analyze the experimental data using the Haule-Kotliar model which, in particular, identifies the 'hidden order' transition in the parent material URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a transition to a state with nonzero hexadecapole moment. We demonstrate that our experimental results are consistent with the predictions of that model.

Quantum criticality in Ce$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$CoIn$_5$

Motivated by the possibility of observing the co-existence between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity in heavy-fermion Ce$_{1-x}$Sm$_x$CoIn$_5$ alloys, we studied how the samarium substitution on the cerium site affects the magnetic field-tuned-quantum criticality of stoicheometric CeCoIn$_5$ by performing specific heat and resistivity measurements. By applying an external magnetic field, we have observed Fermi-liquid to non-Fermi-liquid crossovers in the temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat normalized by temperature and of the resistivity. We obtained the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) by extrapolating to zero temperature the temperature - magnetic field dependence at which the crossovers take place. Furthermore, a scaling analysis of the electronic specific heat is used to confirm the existence of the QCP. We have found that the magnitude of the magnetic-field-induced QCP decreases with increasing samarium concentration. Our analysis of heat capacity and resistivity data reveals a zero-field QCP for $x_\textrm{cr} \approx 0.15$, which falls inside the region where Sm ions antiferromagnetism and superconductivity co-exist.

Evolution of non-Kramers Doublets in Magnetic Field PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$ and PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$

Praseodymium-based 1-2-20 cage compounds Pr$T_2X_{20}$ ($T$ is generally Ti, V, Nb, Ru, Rh, Ir; and $X$ is either Al, Zn or Cd) provide yet another platform to study non-trivial electronic states of matter ranging from topological and magnetic orders to unconventional multipolar orders and superconductivity. In this paper, we report measurements of the electronic heat capacity in two Pr-based 1-2-20 materials: PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$ and PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$. We find that the lowest energy multiplet of the Pr $4f^2$ valence configuration is a $\Gamma_3$ non-Kramers doublet and the first excited triplet is assumed to be a magnetic $\Gamma_5$. By analyzing the dependence of the energy splitting between the ground and first excited singlet states on external magnetic field, we found that the maximum in the heat capacity corresponding to the Schottky anomaly in PrPd$_2$Cd$_{20}$, unlike PrNi$_2$Cd$_{20}$, shows pronounced linear dependence on external magnetic field at higher field values. This effect is associated with the exchange interactions between the field-induced magnetic dipole moments.

Kondo-induced giant isotropic negative thermal expansion

Negative thermal expansion is an unusual phenomenon appearing in only a handful of materials, but pursuit and mastery of the phenomenon holds great promise for applications across disciplines and industries. Here we report use of X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction to investigate the 4f-electronic properties in Y-doped SmS and employ the Kondo volume collapse model to interpret the results. Our measurements reveal an unparalleled decrease of the bulk Sm valence by over 20% at low temperatures in the mixed-valent golden phase, which we show is caused by a strong coupling between an emergent Kondo lattice state and a large isotropic volume change. The amplitude and temperature range of the negative thermal expansion appear strongly dependent on the Y concentration and the associated chemical disorder, providing control over the observed effect. This finding opens new avenues for the design of Kondo lattice materials with tunable, giant and isotropic negative thermal expansion.

Schottky anomaly and short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in filled skutterudites Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$

By performing a series of thermodynamic measurements in an applied magnetic field $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, we investigated the effects of Eu substitution on the Pr sites in filled skutterudite compound Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($ 0 \leq x \leq 1$). A heat capacity Schottky anomaly is present over the whole doping range. For the samples with $x > 0.5$, these Schottky anomaly peaks shift to lower temperature with increasing $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. We argue that this behavior reflects the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu moments, as the AFM transition is suppressed by $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. The Schottky peaks in the samples with $x \leq 0.5$ shift to higher temperatures with increasing magnetic field, signaling the presence of an internal magnetic field due to short-range AFM correlations induced by magnetic moments of neighboring Eu sites. In low $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, the Schottky gaps show a non-linear relationship with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$ as the magnetic moments become weakly magnetized. In high $H_{\textrm{ext}}$, the magnetic moments of Eu sites become completely aligned with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$. Thus, increasing $H_{\textrm{ext}}$ does not further increase the magnetization, hence the Schottky gaps increase linearly with $H_{\textrm{ext}}$

Gyrotropic Hall effect in Berry-curved materials

We study the ac Hall response induced by passage of dc transport current in two- and three-dimensional metals with gyrotropic point groups -- the gyrotropic Hall effect -- and consider the phenomenon of current-induced optical activity in noncentrosymmetric metals as a physical application of our theory. While the effect is expected to be present in single crystals of any noncentrosymmetric metal, we expect it to be strongest in enantiomorphic Weyl semimetals. Using the semiclassical kinetic equation approach we present several mechanisms underlying the gyrotropic Hall effect. Amongst them, the intrinsic mechanism is determined by the Berry curvature dipole, while extrinsic impurity-induced processes are related to skew scattering and side jump phenomena. In general, the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions can be of similar magnitude. We discuss the gyrotropic Hall effect for all frequencies of practical interest, from the DC transport limit, to optical frequencies. We show that for frequencies that are small compared to relevant band splittings, the trace of the gyrotropic Hall tensor in three-dimensional materials is proportional to a topological, quantized Berry charge, and therefore is robust in gyrotropic Weyl systems. This implies that polycrystals of strongly gyrotropic Weyl semimetals will demonstrate strong current-induced optical activity, whereas the response vanishes for polycrystalline ordinary metals. Therefore, the current-induced optical activity can be considered a valuable tool in identifying the topological nature of a material.

Short-range antiferromagnetic correlations in the superconducting state of filled skutterudite alloys Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$

Motivated by current research efforts towards exploring the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in multiband electronic systems, we have investigated the effects of Eu substitution through thermodynamic measurements on the superconducting filled skutterudite alloys Pr$_{1-x}$Eu$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$. An increase in Eu concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature consistent with an increase of magnetic entropy due to Eu local moments. While the low-temperature heat capacity anomaly is present over the whole doping range, we find that in alloys with $x\leq0.5$ the Schottky peaks in the heat capacity in the superconducting state appear to be due to Zeeman splitting by an internal magnetic field. Our theoretical modeling suggests that this field is a result of the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations between the europium ions. For the samples with $x > 0.5$, the peaks in the heat capacity signal the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Eu moments.

Zero-Field Quantum Critical Point in Ce$_{0.91}$Yb$_{0.09}$CoIn$_5$

We present results of specific heat, electrical resistance, and magnetoresistivity measurements on single crystals of the heavy-fermion superconducting alloy Ce$_{0.91}$Yb$_{0.09}$CoIn$_5$. Non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid crossovers are clearly observed in the temperature dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma$ and resistivity data. Furthermore, we show that the Yb-doped sample with $x=0.09$ exhibits universality due to an underlying quantum phase transition without an applied magnetic field by utilizing the scaling analysis of $\gamma$. Fitting of the heat capacity and resistivity data based on existing theoretical models indicates that the zero-field quantum critical point is of antiferromagnetic origin. Finally, we found that at zero magnetic field the system undergoes a third-order phase transition at the temperature $T_{c3}\approx 7$ K.

Relationship between critical current and flux-flow resistivity in the mixed state of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We studied the temperature and magnetic field dependence of vortex dissipation and critical current in the mixed-state of unconventional superconducting alloys Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($0.044 \leq x \leq 0.100$) through current-voltage measurements. Our results reveal that all the electric field $E$ vs current density $j$ curves in the Ohmic regime merge to one point ($j_0,E_0$) and that there is a simple relationship between the critical current density $j_c$ and flux-flow resistivity $\rho_{\rm ff}$: $\rho_{\rm ff}/\rho_{\rm n} = (1- j_{c}/j_{0})^{-1}$, where $\rho_{\rm n}=E_0/j_0$ is the normal-state resistivity just above the superconducting transition. In addition, $E_0$ is positive for all five dopings, reflecting the abnormal behavior of the flux-flow resistivity $\rho_{\rm ff}$: it increases with decreasing magnetic field. In contrast, $E_0$ is negative for the conventional superconductor Nb since, as expected, $\rho_{\rm ff}$ decreases with decreasing magnetic field. Furthermore, in the under-doped and over-doped single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, the parameter $E_0$ remains temperature independent, while it decreases with increasing temperature for the single crystals around optimal doping ($ 0.060\leq x\leq 0.072 $). This result points to the co-existence of superconductivity with some other phase around optimal doping.

Phase diagram for the trapped p-wave fermionic superfluid with population imbalance

We consider the problem of spin-triplet p-wave superfluid pairing with total spin projection $m_s=0$ in atomic Fermi gas across the Feshbach resonance. We allow for imbalanced populations and take into account the effects due to presence of a parabolic trapping potential. Within the mean-field approximation for the one- and two-channel pairing models we show that depending on the distance from the center of a trap at least two superfluid states will have the lowest energy. Superfluid shells which emerge in a trap may have two out of three angular components of the p-wave superfluid order parameter equal to zero.

Universality and unconventional enhancement of flux-flow resistivity in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

Measurements of the current-voltage characteristics were performed on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with doping level $0.044 \leq x \leq 0.1$. An unconventional increase in the flux-flow resistivity $\rho_{\rm ff}$ with decreasing magnetic field was observed across this doping range. Such an abnormal field dependence of flux-flow resistivity is in contrast with the linear field dependence of $\rho_{\rm ff}$ in conventional type-II superconductors, but is similar to the behavior recently observed in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. A significantly enhanced $\rho_{\rm ff}$ was found for the x=0.06 single crystals, implying a strong single-particle energy dissipation around the vortex cores. At different temperatures and fields and for a given doping concentration, the normalized $\rho_{\rm ff}$ scales with normalized field and temperature. The doping level dependence of these parameters strongly suggests that the abnormal upturn flux-flow resisitivity is likely related to the enhancement of spin fluctuations around the vortex cores of the optimally doped samples.

Kondo insulator SmB6 under strain: surface dominated conduction near room temperature

SmB6 is a strongly correlated mixed-valence Kondo insulator with a newly discovered surface state, proposed to be of non-trivial topological origin. However, the surface state dominates electrical conduction only below T* ~ 4 K limiting its scientific investigation and device application. Here, we report the enhancement of T * in SmB6 under the application of tensile strain. With 0.7% tensile strain we report surface dominated conduction at up to a temperature of 240 K, persisting even after the strain has been removed. This can be explained in the framework of strain-tuned temporal and spatial fluctuations of f-electron configurations, which might be generally applied to other mixed-valence materials. We note that this amount of strain can be indued in epitaxial SmB6 films via substrate in potential device applications.

Multiband superconductivity in the correlated electron filled skutterudite system Pr(1-x)Ce(x)Pt4Ge12

Studies of superconductivity in multiband correlated electronic systems has become one of the central topics in condensed matter/materials physics. In this paper, we present the results of thermodynamic measurements on the superconducting filled skutterudite system Pr$_{1-x}$Ce$_x$Pt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ ($ 0 \leq x \leq 0.2$) to investigate how substitution of Ce at Pr sites affects superconductivity. We find that an increase in Ce concentration leads to a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature from $T_{c}\sim 7.9$ K for $x=0$ to $T_c\sim 0.6$ K for $x=0.14$. Our analysis of the specific heat data for $x\leq 0.07$ reveals that superconductivity must develop in at least two bands: the superconducting order parameter has nodes on one Fermi pocket and remains fully gapped on the other. Both the nodal and nodeless gap values decrease, with the nodal gap being suppressed more strongly, with Ce substitution. Ultimately, the higher Ce concentration samples ($x>0.07$) display a nodeless gap only.

Anomalous Hall Effect on the surface of topological Kondo insulators

We calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}$ of the surface states {in cubic topological Kondo insulators}. We consider a generic model for the surface states with three Dirac cones on the (001) surface. The Fermi velocity, the Fermi momentum and the Zeeman energy in different Dirac pockets may be unequal. The microscopic impurity potential mediates mixed intra and interband extrinsic scattering processes. Our calculation of $\sigma_{xy}$ is based on the Kubo-Streda diagrammatic approach. It includes diffractive skew scattering contributions originating from the rare two-impurity complexes. Remarkably, these contributions yield anomalous Hall conductivity that is independent of impurity concentration, and thus is of the same order as other known extrinsic side jump and skew scattering terms. We discuss various special cases of our results and the experimental relevance of our study in the context of the recent hysteretic magnetotransport data in SmB$_6$ samples.

Magnetic penetration depth in disordered iron-based superconductors

We study the effect of disorder on the London penetration depth in iron-based superconductors. The theory is based on a two-band model with quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces, which allows for the coexistence region in the phase diagram between magnetic and superconducting states in the presence of intraband and interband scattering. Within the quasiclassical approximation we derive and solve Eilenberger's equations, which include a weak external magnetic field, and provide analytical expressions for the penetration depth in the various limiting cases. A complete numerical analysis of the doping and temperature dependence of the London penetration depth reveals the crucial effect of disorder scattering, which is especially pronounced in the coexistence phase. The experimental implications of our results are discussed.

Orbital and Pauli limiting effects in heavily doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We investigated the thermodynamic properties of the Fe-based lightly disordered superconductor Ba$_{0.05}$K$_{0.95}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in external magnetic field H applied along the FeAs layers (H//ab planes). The superconducting (SC) transition temperature for this doping level is T$_c$ = 6.6 K. Our analysis of the specific heat C(T,H) measured for T < T$_c$ implies a sign change of the superconducting order parameter across different Fermi pockets. We provide experimental evidence for the three components superconducting order parameter. We find that all three components have values which are comparable with the previously reported ones for the stochiometric compound KFe$_2$As$_2$. Our data for C(T,H) and resistivity rho(T,H) can be interpreted in favor of the dominant orbital contribution to the pair-breaking mechanism at low fields, while Pauli limiting effect dominates at high fields, giving rise to a gapless superconducting state with only the leading non-zero gap.

Quantum criticality and superconducting pairing in Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 alloys

In this paper we review some of our recent experimental and theoretical results on transport and thermodynamic properties of heavy-fermion alloys Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5. Charge transport measurements under magnetic field and pressure on these single crystalline alloys revealed that: (i) relatively small Yb substitution suppresses the field induced quantum critical point, with a complete suppression for nominal Yb doping x>0.20; (ii) the superconducting transition temperature Tc and Kondo lattice coherence temperature T* decrease with x, yet they remain finite over the wide range of Yb concentrations; (iii) both Tc and T* increase with pressure; (iv) there are two contributions to resistivity, which show different temperature and pressure dependences, implying that both heavy and light quasiparticles contribute to inelastic scattering. We also analyzed theoretically the pressure dependence of both T* and Tc within the composite pairing theory. In the purely static limit, when we ignore the lattice dynamics, we find that the composite pairing mechanism necessarily causes opposite behaviors of T* and Tc with pressure: if T* grows with pressure, Tc must decrease with pressure and vice versa.
