Shear viscosity in $ϕ^4$ theory from an extended ladder resummation

We study shear viscosity in weakly coupled hot $ϕ^4$ theory using the CTP formalism . We show that the viscosity can be obtained as the integral of a three-point function. Non-perturbative corrections to the bare one-loop result can be obtained by solving a decoupled Schwinger-Dyson type integral equation for this vertex. This integral equation represents the resummation of an infinite series of ladder diagrams which contribute to the leading order result. It can be shown that this integral equation has exactly the same form as the Boltzmann equation. We show that the integral equation for the viscosity can be reexpressed by writing the vertex as a combination of polarization tensors. An expression for this polarization tensor can be obtained by solving another Schwinger-Dyson type integral equation. This procedure results in an expression for the viscosity that represents a non-perturbative resummation of contributions to the viscosity which includes certain non-ladder graphs, as well as the usual ladders. We discuss the motivation for this resummation. We show that these resummations can also be obtained by writing the viscosity as an integral equation involving a single four-point function. Finally, we show that when the viscosity is expressed in terms of a four-point function, it is possible to further extend the set of graphs included in the resummation by treating vertex and propagator corrections self-consistently. We discuss the significance of such a self-consistent resummation and show that the integral equation contains cancellations between vertex and propagator corrections.

Four-Point Spectral Functions and Ward Identities in Hot QED

We derive spectral representations for the different components of the 4-point function at finite temperature in the real time formalism in terms of five real spectral densities. We explicitly calculate all these functions in QED in the hard thermal loop approximation. The Ward identities obeyed by the 1-loop 3- and 4-point functions in real time and their spectral functions are derived. We compare our results with those derived previously in the imaginary-time formalism for retarded functions in hot QCD, and we discuss the generalization of our results to non-equilibrium situations.

Evaluating Real Time Finite Temperature Feynman Amplitudes

We construct a program to calculate Feynman amplitudes at finite temperature in the real time Keldysh formalism using the symbolic manipulation program {\it Mathematica}. As an example, the usefulness of this program is demonstrated by proving the finite temperature Ward identity for QED in a second order effective theory.

Two-Loop Quantum Corrections of Scalar QED with Non-Minimal Chern-Simons Coupling

We investigate two-loop quantum corrections to non-minimally coupled Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. The non-minimal gauge interaction represents the magnetic moment interaction between the charged scalar and the electromagnetic field. We show that the one-loop renormalizability of the theory found in previous work does not survive to the two-loop level. However, with an appropriate choice of the non-minimal coupling constant, it is possible to renormalize the two-loop effective potential and hence render it potentially useful for a detailed analysis of spontaneous symmetry breaking induced by radiative corrections.

A New Formulation of a 1+1 Dimensional Field Theory Constrained to a Box

We consider a 1+1 dimensional field theory constrained to a finite box of length L. Traditionally, calculations in a box are done by replacing the integrals over the spatial momenta by discrete sums and then evaluating sums and doing analytic continuations. We show that it is also possible to do such calculations using an analogy to finite temperature field theory. We develop a formalism that is similar to the closed time path formulation of finite temperature field theory. Our technique can be used to calculate spatially retarded green functions, without evaluating sums or doing analytic continuations. We calculate the self energy in a simple scalar theory as an example.

Ward Identities in Non-equilibrium QED

We verify the QED Ward identity for the two- and three -point functions at non-equilibrium in the HTL limit. We use the Keldysh formalism of real time finite temperature field theory. We obtain an identity of the same form as the Ward identity for a set of one loop self-energy and one loop three-point vertex diagrams which are constructed from HTL effective propagators and vertices.

Non-Equilibrium HTL Resummation

We present an extension of the HTL resummation technique to non-equilibrium situations, starting from the real time formalism in the Keldysh representation. As an example we calculate the HTL photon self energy, from which we derive the resummed photon propagator. This propagator is applied to the computation of the interaction rate of a hard electron in a non-equilibrium QED plasma. In particular we show the absence of of pinch singularities in these quantities. Finally we show that the Ward identities relating the HTL electron self energy to the HTL electron-photon vertex hold as in equilibrium.

Three-Point Functions at Finite Temperature

We study 3-point functions at finite temperature in the closed time path formalism. We give a general decomposition of the eight component tensor in terms of seven vertex functions. We derive a spectral representation for these seven functions in terms of two independent real spectral functions. We derive relationships between the seven functions and obtain a representation of the vertex tensor that greatly simplifies calculations in real time.

Massless Scalar QED with Non-minimal Chern Simons Coupling

2+1 dimensional massless scalar QED with $(ϕ^*ϕ)^3$ scalar self-coupling is modified by the addition of a non- minimal Chern-Simons term that couples the dual of the electromagnetic field strength to the covariant current of the complex scalar field. The theory is shown to be fully one- loop renormalizable. The one loop effective potential for the scalar field gives rise to spontaneous symmetry breaking which induces masses for both the scalar and vector fields. At high temperature there is a symmetry restoring phase transition.
