An improved formalism for measuring the dark matter subhalos mass by its gravitational wake

We reexamined the framework used to determine the dark matter mass of a subhalo using the gravitational effects of its passage upon the stellar halo of a host. In particular, we aim to include different density distribution functions for the perturber and a non homogeneous background due to the host's halo gravitational potential. We have used a sample of K giant and RRLyrae stars based on Gaia DR3 data and two different set of simulations, to test the new formalism. From our analysis, we found that the inclusion of a nonhomogeneous background improves substantially the estimation of the subhalo dark matter mass. The methodology is not sufficiently sensitive to discriminate between different density distribution functions for the perturber, however, in the case of the observational data, the inclussion of the cloud's circular velocity is a fundamental tool to complement the analysis. The results obtained including the host halo potential agree with the independent previous measurements or with the reported value for the subhalo dark matter mass in the simulations. These results show that it is possible to measure the mass of smaller subhalos through their gravitational wake, even for subhalos closer to their host, with distances lower than 30 kpc.

A determination of the LMC dark matter subhalo mass using the MW halo stars in its gravitational wake

Our goal is to study the gravitational effects caused by the passage of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in its orbit on the stellar halo of the Milky Way (MW). We employed the Gaia Data Release 3 to construct a halo tracers data set consisting of K-Giant stars and RR-Lyrae variables. Additionally, we have compared the data with a theoretical model to estimate the DM subhalo mass. We have improved the characterisation of the local wake and the collective response due to the LMC orbit. On the other hand, we have estimated for the first time the dark subhalo mass of the Large Magellanic Cloud, of the order of $1.7\times 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$, comparable to previously reported values in the literature.

Dark matter, supernova neutrinos and other backgrounds in direct dark matter searches. The ANDES laboratory prospects

Dark Matter particles can be detected directly via their elastic scattering with nuclei. Next generation experiments can eventually find physical evidences about dark matter candidates. With this motivation in mind, we have calculated the expected signals of dark matter particles in xenon detectors. The calculations were performed by considering different masses and parameters within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Since the detectors can also detect neutrinos, we have analyzed the supernova neutrino signal including a sterile neutrino in the formalism. Using this 3+1 scheme, we make predictions for both the normal and inverse mass hierarchy. In order to perform a study of the response of planned direct-detection experiments, to be located in ANDES (Agua Negra Deep Experimental Site), we have calculated the neutrino contributions to the background by taken into account reactor's neutrinos and geoneutrinos at the site of the lab. As a test detector, we take a Xenon1T-like array.

Neutrino interactions in liquid scintillators including active-sterile neutrino mixing

Neutrinos play an important role in core-collapse supernova events since they are a key piece to understand the explosion mechanisms. The analysis of the neutrino fluxes can bring answers to neutrino's related problems e.g.: mass hierarchy, spectral splitting, sterile neutrinos, etc. In this work we study the impact of neutrino oscillations and the possible existence of eV sterile neutrinos upon the supernova neutrino flux $F_ν(E)$. We have calculated the energy distribution of the neutrino flux from a supernova and the total number of events which would be detected in a liquid scintillator. We also present an analysis for the conversion probabilities as a function of the active-sterile neutrino mixing parameters. Finally, we have carried out a statistical analysis to extract values for the mixing parameters of the model.

MSSM WIMPs-nucleon cross section for E$_χ<$ 500 GeV

Among dark-matter candidates are the WIMPs (Weekly Interacting Massive Particles). Low-threshold detectors could directly detect dark-matter by measuring the energy deposited by the particles. In this work we examine the cross section for the elastic scattering of WIMPs on nucleons, in the spin-dependent and spin-independent channels. WIMPs are taken as neutralinos in the context of the minimal super-symmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM). The dependence of the results with the adopted MSSM parameters is discussed.

The cosmological lithium problem, varying constants and the $H_0$ tension

In this work we show that the cosmological lithium problem and the $H_0$ tension could be eased at the same time by allowing variations in the fundamental constants. We compute the primordial abundances of light elements resulting from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis considering the fine structure constant, the Higgs' vacuum expectation value and Newton's constant as free parameters. Using the observational data for abundances, we set constraints on the variations of the fundamental constants. An interpretation of the results in terms of the number of effective relativistic species gives $N_{\rm eff}=4.04\pm0.12$. If one extrapolates the fit of {\sffamily Planck} considering this $N_{\rm eff}$, the value of the inferred Hubble's constant shifts to $H_0=(71.85\pm0.77)\,\text{km}\,\text{s}^{-1} \text{Mpc}^{-1}$, compatible with current direct determinations.

Limits on active-sterile neutrino mixing parameters using heavy nuclei abundances

The production of heavy-mass elements due to the rapid neutron-capture mechanism (r-process) is associated with astrophysical scenarios, such as supernovae and neutron-star mergers. In the r-process the capture of neutrons is followed by $β$-decays until nuclear stability is reached. A key element in the chain of nuclear weak-decays leading to the production of isotopes may be the change of the parameters controlling the neutrino sector, due to the mixing of active and sterile species. In this work we have addressed this question and calculated $β$-decay rates for the nuclei involved in the r-process chains as a function of the neutrino mixing parameters. These rates were then used in the calculation of the abundance of the heavy elements produced in core-collapse supernova and in neutron-star mergers, starting from different initial mass-fraction distributions. The analysis shows that the core-collapse supernova environment contributes with approximately $30\%$ of the total heavy nuclei abundance while the neutron-star merger contributes with about $70\%$ of it. Using available experimental data we have performed a statistical analysis to set limits on the active-sterile neutrino mixing angle and found a best-fit value $\sin^2 2θ_{14}=0.22$, a value comparable with those found in other studies reported in the literature.

Neutrino mixing in nuclear rapid neutron-capture processes

A possible mechanism for the formation of heavy-mass elements in supernovae is the rapid neutron-capture-mechanism (r-process). It depends upon the electron-fraction $Y_e$, a quantity which is determined by beta-decay-rates. In this paper, we focus on the calculation of electroweak decay-rates in presence of massive neutrinos. The resulting expressions are then used to calculate nuclear reactions entering the rapid-neutron capture. We fix the astrophysical parameters to the case of a core-collapse supernova. The neutrino sector includes a mass scheme and mixing angles for active neutrinos, and also by including the mixing between active and sterile neutrinos. The results of the calculations show that the predicted abundances of heavy-mass nuclei are indeed affected by the neutrino mixing.

Effects of neutrino mixing upon electron fraction in core collapse supernovae

The inclusion of massive neutrinos affects the cross sections involved in the formation of heavy nuclei, modifying their abundances. Rapid neutron capture processes (r-process) are often associated with explosive events such as core-collapse supernovae. In this work we study the effects of active and sterile neutrino oscillations and interactions, upon the calculation of neutrino fluxes, the baryonic density and the electron fraction of the material. We have considered two different initial distribution functions of the neutrinos and different combinations of mixing parameters (including θ 34 = 0). We use the formalism of density matrices for the calculations and included the effects of neutrino oscillations, interactions with matter and self-neutrino interactions. We found that the interactions of the neutrinos with matter and with themselves change the electron fraction, affecting the onset of the r-process.

Neutrino induced reactions in core-collapse supernovae: effects on the electron fraction

Neutrino induced reactions are a basic ingredient in astrophysical processes like star evolution. The existence of neutrino oscillations affects the rate of nuclear electroweak decays which participates in the chain of events that determines the fate of the star. Among the processes of interest, the production of heavy elements in core-collapse supernovae is strongly dependent upon neutrino properties, like the mixing between different species of neutrinos. In this work we study the effects of neutrino oscillations upon the electron fraction as a function of the neutrino mixing parameters, for two schemes: the $1+1$ scheme (one active neutrino and one sterile neutrino) and the $2+1$ scheme (two active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino). We have performed this analysis considering a core-collapse supernovae and determined the physical conditions needed to activate the nuclear reaction chains involved in the r-process. We found that the interactions of the neutrinos with matter and among themselves and the initial amount of sterile neutrinos in the neutrino-sphere might change the electron fraction, therefore affecting the onset of the r-process. We have set constrains on the active-sterile neutrino mixing parameters. They are the square-mass-difference $Δm^2_{14} $, the mixing angle $\sin^2 2θ_{14}$, and the hindrance factor $ξ_s $ for the occupation of sterile neutrinos. The calculations have been performed for different values of $X_α$, which is the fraction of $α$-particles. For $X_α=0$ the r-process is taking place if $Δm^2_{14} \geq 2 \, {\rm eV}^2 $, $\sin^2 2θ_{14} < 0.8 $ and $ξ_s < 0.5$. For larger values of $X_α$ the region of parameters is strongly reduced. The present results are compared to results available in the literature.

Decoherence effect in neutrinos produced in micro-quasar jets

We study the effect of decoherence upon the neutrino spectra produced in micro-quasar jets. In order to analyse the precession of the polarization vector of neutrinos we have calculated its time evolution by solving the corresponding equations of motion, and by assuming two different scenarios, namely: (i) the mixing between two active neutrinos, and (ii) the mixing between one active and one sterile neutrino. We have found that for the case with two active neutrinos and large values of the neutrino-neutrino interactions the onset of decoherence is not manifest. For the active-sterile scheme decoherence becomes manifest if the strength of the neutrino-neutrino interactions ($μ$) and the ratio between the square-mass difference and the energy ($ω=\frac{δm^2}{2 E}$) satisfy the relation $\fracμ{w_{E=E_{\rm min}}}>0.1$.

Calculated WIMP signals at the ANDES laboratory: comparison with northern and southern located dark matter detectors

Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP) are possible components of the Universe's Dark Matter. The detection of WIMP is signalled by the recoil of the atomic nuclei which form a detector. CoGeNT at the Soudan Underground Laboratory (SUL) and DAMA at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) have reported data on annual modulation of signals attributed to WIMP. Both experiments are located in laboratories of the northern hemisphere. Dark matter detectors are planned to operate (or already operate) in laboratories of the southern hemisphere, like SABRE at Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL) in Australia, and DM-ICE in the South Pole. In this work we have analysed the dependence of diurnal and annual modulation of signals, pertaining to the detection of WIMP, on the coordinates of the laboratory, for experiments which may be performed in the planned new underground facility ANDES (Agua Negra Deep Experimental Site), to be built in San Juan, Argentina. We made predictions for NaI and Ge-type detectors placed in ANDES, to compare with DAMA, CoGeNT, SABRE and DM-ICE arrays, and found that the diurnal modulation of the signals, at the site of ANDES, is amplified at its maximum value, both for NaI (Ge)-type detectors, while the annual modulation remains unaffected by the change in coordinates from north to south.

Effects due to Resonant and Continuum States on the Neutrino-Nucleus Cross Section

Estimates of the neutrino-nucleus cross section, for the charged-current process nu+208Pb-> e+208Bi, are presented. The nuclear structure calculations have been performed by considering bound, resonant, and continuum states in the single-particle basis used to construct correlated proton-particle neutron-hole configurations. The observed features of the spectrum of 208Bi have been reproduced, as accurately as possible, by diagonalizing a phenomenological multipole-multipole interaction. Calculations of the cross section, for values of q 200 $ MeV, were performed, and the dependence of the results upon the choice of the residual proton-neutron interaction was investigated. It is found that the inclusion of resonant states in the calculation of the nuclear wave functions increases the neutrino-nucleus cross section, and that the contribution of the continuum is negligible.

Testing Primordial Abundances With Sterile Neutrinos

The mixing between sterile and active neutrinos is taken into account in the calculation of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. The abundances of primordial elements, like D, 3He, 4He and 7Li, are calculated by including sterile neutrinos, and by using finite chemical potentials. It is found that the resulting theoretical abundances are consistent with WMAP data on baryonic densities, and with limits of LSND on mixing angles, only if 7Li is excluded from the statistical analysis of theoretical and experimental results.
