Description of the Scenario Machine

We present here an updated description of the "Scenario Machine" code. This tool is used to carry out a population synthesis of binary stars. Previous version of the description can be found at http://xray.sai.msu.ru/~mystery//articles/review/contents.html

Neutron star masses: dwarfs, giants and neighbors

We discuss three topics related to the neutron star (NS) mass spectrum. At first we discuss the possibility to form low-mass ($ M \stackrel{<}{\sim} 1 M_{\odot}$) and suggest this is possible only due to fragmentation of rapidly rotating proto-NSs. Such low-mass NSs should have very high spatial velocities which could allow identification. A critical assessment of this scenario is given. Secondly, we discuss mass growth due to accretion for NSs in close binary systems. With the help of numerical population synthesis calculations we derive the mass spectrum of massive ($M > 1.8 M_{\odot}$) NSs. Finally, we discuss the role of the mass spectrum in population studies of young cooling NSs. We formulate a kind of {\it mass constraint} which can be helpful, in our opinion, in discussing different competive models of the thermal evolution of NSs.

Nearby young single black holes

We consider nearby young black holes formed after supernova explosions in close binaries whose secondary components are currently observed as the so-called runaway stars. Using data on runaway stars and making reasonable assumptions about the mechanisms of supernova explosions and binary breakup, we estimate the present position of nearby young black holes. For two objects, we obtained relatively small error regions ($\sim 50$-100 deg$^2$). The possibility of detecting these nearby young black holes is discussed.

Magnetars origin and progenitors with enhanced rotation

Among a dozen known magnetar candidates there are no binary objects. As an estimate of a fraction of binary neutron stars is about 10% it is reasonable to address the question of solitarity of magnetars, to estimate theoretically the fraction of binary objects among them, and to mark o probable companions. We present population synthesis calculations of binary systems. Our goal is to estimate the number of neutron stars originated from progenitors with enhanced rotation, as such compact objects can be expected to have large magnetic fields, ie. they can be magnetars. The fraction of such neutron stars in our calculations is about 13-16%. Most of these objects are isolated due to coalescences of components prior to a neutron star formation, or due to a system disruption after a supernova explosion. The fraction of such neutron stars in survived binaries is about 1% or lower. Their most numerous companions are black holes.

Trans-sonic propeller stage

We follow the approach used by Davies and Pringle (1981) and discuss the trans-sonic substage of the propeller regime. This substage is intermediate between the supersonic and subsonic propeller substages. In the trans-sonic regime an envelope around a magnetosphere of a neutron star passes through a kind of a reorganization process. The envelope in this regime consists of two parts. In the bottom one turbulent motions are subsonic. Then at some distance $r_\mathrm{s}$ the turbulent velocity becomes equal to the sound velocity. During this substage the boundary $r_\mathrm{s}$ propagates outwards till it reaches the outer boundary, and so the subsonic regime starts. We found that the trans-sonic substage is unstable, so the transition between supersonic and subsonic substages proceeds on the dynamical time scale. For realistic parameters this time is in the range from weeks to years.

Formation of massive skyrmion stars

As it is well known for stiff equations of state an existence of neutron stars with masses $\ga 2 M_{\sun}$ is possible. Especially interesting possibility is opened if the equation of state based on the Skyrme theory is realized in nature. This equation of state was proposed recently by Ouyed and Butler. We discuss different channels of formation of massive rapidly rotating neutron stars. We use a population synthesis code to estimate numbers of massive neutron stars on different evolutionary stages. A neutron star increases its mass by accretion from a secondary companion. Significant growth of a neutron star mass due to accretion is possible only for certain values of initial parameters of the binary. In this paper we show that significant part of massive neutron stars with $M\ga 2 M_{\sun}$ can be observed as millisecond radio pulsars, as X-ray sources in pair with white dwarfs, and as accreting neutron stars with very low magnetic fields.

Population synthesis in astrophysics

We briefly describe different astrophysical applications of a population synthesis method. In some details we discuss the population synthesis of close binary systems and of isolated neutron stars.

Young close-by neutron stars: the Gould Belt vs. the Galactic disc

We present new population synthesis calculations of close young neutron stars. In comparison with our previous investigation we use a different neutron star mass spectrum and different initial spatial and velocity distributions. The results confirm that most of ROSAT dim radioquiet isolated neutron stars had their origin in the Gould Belt. Several tens of young neutron stars can be identified in future in ROSAT data at low galactic latitudes and some of them also can be EGRET unidentified sources.

Log N -- Log S distributions of accreting and cooling isolated neutron stars

We model populations of isolated neutron stars in the Galaxy following their orbital and magneto-rotational evolution. It is shown that accretors become more abundant than coolers at fluxes below $\sim 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1},$ and one can predict that about one accreting neutron star per square degree should be observed at the {\it Chandra} and {\it Newton} flux limits of $\sim 10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}.$ The soft ROSAT sources associated with isolated neutron stars can be relatively young cooling objects only if the neutron star birth rate in the Solar vicinity during the last $\sim 10^6$ yr is higher than that inferred from radiopulsar observations.

Young isolated neutron stars from the Gould Belt

The origin of the local population of young, cooling neutron stars is investigated with a population synthesis model taking into account the contribution of neutron stars born in the Gould Belt, in addition to those originating in the Galactic disk. We estimate their emission in the soft X-ray band as a function of distance and age and construct the Log N -- Log S distribution. It is shown that the inclusion of neutron stars from the Gould Belt provides a good fit to the observed Log N -- Log S distribution. As the Sun is situated inside the Gould Belt, one can naturally explain the comparative local overabundance of massive progenitors and can remove the difficulty of the deficit of relatively bright ($\ga 0.1$ ROSAT PSPC cts s$^{-1}$) cooling neutron stars previously reported from models where only neutron stars from the Galactic disk were accounted for.

Young compact objects in the Solar vicinity

We present Log N -- Log S distribution for close-by young isolated neutron stars. On the basis of this distribution it is shown that the seven ROSAT isolated neutron stars (if they are young cooling objects) are genetically related to the Gould Belt. We predict, that there are about few tens unidentified close-by young isolated neutron stars in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. The possibility that these seven peculiar sources contain a neutron star less massive and more magnetized then in ordinary radiopulsars is also discussed. In the aftermath of relatively close recent supernova explosions (1 kpc around the Sun, a few Myrs ago), a few black holes might have been formed, according to the local initial mass function. We thus discuss the possibility of determining approximate positions of close-by isolated black holes using data on runaway stars and simple calculations of binary evolution and disruption.

Astrophysics of isolated neutron stars: radioquiet neutron stars and magnetars

In this paper we review present state of theoretical and observational exploration of isolated neutron stars. We mainly discuss objects which do not show usual radiopulsar activity. We include into our review the following types of objects: dim X-ray sources in the Galactic disk and in globular clusters; compact X-ray sources in supernova remnants; anomalous X-ray pulsars; soft gamma repeaters; Geminga. Also we briefly discuss related types of objects: isolated black holes, quark stars and supernovae. We review basic physical processes connected with evolution of isolated neutron stars: cooling; magnetic field decay; period evolution; magnetospheric processes, accretion. We discuss populational synthesis of isolated neutron stars of different types.

Young close isolated compact objects

We suggest that the seven radio-quiet isolated neutron stars observed with ROSAT are young cooling objects associated to recent near-by supernova explosions which formed runaway stars and the Local Bubble, affecting the topology of the interstellar medium in the vicinity of the Sun (within a few hundred parsecs). In the aftermath of these explosions, a few black holes might have been formed, according to the local initial mass function. We thus discuss the possibility of determining approximate positions of close-by isolated black holes using data on runaway stars and simple calculations of binary evolution and disruption.

Broad-band gravitational-wave pulses from binary neutron stars in eccentric orbits

Maximum gravitational wave emission from binary stars in eccentric orbits occurs near the periastron passage. We show that for a stationary distribution of binary neutron stars in the Galaxy, several high-eccentricity systems with orbital periods in the range from tens of minutes to several days should exist that emit broad gravitational-wave pulses in the frequency range 1-100 mHz. The space interferometer LISA could register the pulsed signal from these system at a signal-to-noise ratio level $S/N>5\sqrt{5}$ in the frequency range $\sim 10^{-3}-10^{-1}$ Hz during one-year observational time. Some detection algorithms for such a signal are discussed.

The Magnificent Seven: Close-by Cooling Neutron Stars?

We model Galactic populations of accreting and cooling isolated neutron stars in the attempt to explore their link with a new class of dim soft X-ray sources revealed by ROSAT. For accretors we follow the magneto-rotational and dynamical evolution in the Galactic potential and a realistic large scale distribution of the interstellar medium is used. Under standard assumptions old neutron stars enter the accretor stage only if their magnetic field exceeds $\approx 10^{11}$--$10^{12}$ G. We predict about 1 source per square degree for fluxes $\approx 10^{-15}$--$10^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ in the energy range 0.5-2 keV. Cooling neutron stars are explored within a simpler model of local sources, including however interstellar absorption. They are found to be significantly less abundant at low fluxes, $<0.1$ sources per square degree, but dominate over accretors at higher flux levels ($\approx 10^{-12}$--$10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$). We suggest that the faint sources observed by ROSAT may be young cooling neutron stars with typical age $\la 10^6$ yrs, if the total number of young neutron stars in the Solar proximity is $\sim 10$ times higher than inferred from radiopulsars statistics.

Why NS and BH mass distribition is bimodal?

The observed mass distribution for the compact remnants of massive stars (neutron stars and black holes) and its relationship to possible mechanisms for the ejection of the envelopes of type II and Ib/c supernovae is analyzed. The conclusion is drawn that this distribution can be obtained only by a magneto-rotational mechanism for the supernovae with sufficiently long time of the field amplification, and a soft equation of state for neutron stars with limiting masses \sim1.5-1.6M_\odot. Some consequences of this hypothesis are discussed.

Stochastic spin evolution of neutron stars

In this paper we present calculations of period distribution for old accreting isolated neutron stars (INSs). At the age about a few billions years low velocity INSs come to the stage of accretion. At that stage their period evolution is governed by magnetic breaking and accreted angular momentum. Due to turbulence of the interstellar medium (ISM) accreted momentum can both accelerate and decelerate rotation of an INS and spin evolution has chaotic character. Calculations show that for constant magnetic fields INSs have relatively long spin periods, $\ge 10^4$--$10^5$ s, depending on parameters of INSs and an ISM. Due to long periods INSs have high spin up/spin down rates, which should fluctuate on a time scale about a few years.
