Search for GeV-scale sterile neutrinos responsible for active neutrino oscillations and baryon asymmetry of the Universe

Standard model of particle physics fails to explain neutrino oscillations, dark matter and baryon asymmetry of the Universe. All these problems can be solved with three sterile neutrinos added to the model. Quite remarkably, if sterile neutrino masses are well below the electroweak scale, this modification --- Neutrino Minimal Standard Model (nuMSM) --- can be tested experimentally. We discuss a new experiment on search for decays of GeV-scale sterile neutrinos, which in the framework of the nuMSM are responsible for the matter-antimatter asymmetry generation and for the active neutrino masses. If lighter than 2 GeV, these particles can be produced in decays of charm mesons generated by high energy protons in a target of a proton beam-dump experiment, and subsequently decay into light SM particles. In order to fully explore this sector of the nuMSM, the new experiment requires data obtained with at least 10^{20} incident protons on target (achievable at CERN SPS in the future), and a big volume detector constructed from a large amount of identical single modules, with a total sterile neutrino decay length of few kilometers. The preliminary feasibility study for the proposed experiment shows that it has sensitivity which may either lead to the discovery of new particles below the Fermi scale --- right-handed partners of neutrinos --- or rule out see-saw sterile neutrinos with masses below 2 GeV.

Quantum scale-invariant models as effective field theories

We address the question of whether the quantum scale-invariant theories introduced in [1] are renormalizable or play the role of effective field theories that are valid below the Planck scale $M_P$. We show that starting from two-loop level the renormalization procedure requires introduction of counter-terms with structures different from those in the initial Lagrangian, making these theories non-renormalizable and therefore non-predictive above $M_P$. Despite non-renormalizability, the attractive features of these theories, associated with the stability of the Higgs mass agains radiative corrections and the smallness of the cosmological constant, remain intact.

The Standard Model Higgs boson as the inflaton

We argue that the Higgs boson of the Standard Model can lead to inflation and produce cosmological perturbations in accordance with observations. An essential requirement is the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs scalar field to gravity; no new particle besides already present in the electroweak theory is required.

Primordial Hypermagnetic Fields and Triangle Anomaly

The high-temperature plasma above the electroweak scale $\sim 100$ GeV may have contained a primordial hypercharge magnetic field whose anomalous coupling to the fermions induces a transformation of the hypermagnetic energy density into fermionic number. In order to describe this process, we generalize the ordinary magnetohydrodynamical equations to the anomalous case. We show that a not completely homogeneous hypermagnetic background induces fermion number fluctuations, which can be expressed in terms of a generic hypermagnetic field configuration. We argue that, depending upon the various particle physics parameters involved in our estimate (electron Yukawa coupling, strength of the electroweak phase transition) and upon the hypermagnetic energy spectrum, sizeable matter-antimatter fluctuations can be generated in the plasma. These fluctuations may modify the predictions of the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We derive constraints on the magnetic fields from the requirement that the homogeneous BBN is not changed. We analyse the influence of primordial magnetic fields on the electroweak phase transition and show that some specific configurations of the magnetic field may be converted into net baryon number at the electroweak scale.

Primordial magnetic fields, anomalous isocurvature fluctuations and Big Bang nucleosynthesis

We show that the presence of primordial stochastic (hypercharge) magnetic fields before the electroweak (EW) phase transition induces isocurvature fluctuations (baryon number inhomogeneities). Depending on the details of the magnetic field spectrum and on the particle physics parameters (such as the strength of the EW phase transition and electron Yukawa couplings) these fluctuations may survive until the Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). Their lenghtscale may exceed the neutron diffusion length at that time, while their magnitude can be so large that sizable antimatter domains are present. This provides the possibility of a new type of initial conditions for non-homogeneous BBN or, from a more conservative point of view, stringent bounds on primordial magnetic fields.

Melting of the Higgs Vacuum: Conserved Numbers at High Temperature

We discuss the computation of the grand canonical partition sum describing hot matter in systems with the Higgs mechanism in the presence of non-zero conserved global charges. We formulate a set of simple rules for that computation in the high-temperature approximation in the limit of small chemical potentials. As an illustration of the use of these rules, we calculate the leading term in the free energy of the standard model as a function of baryon number B. We show that this quantity depends continuously on the Higgs expectation value $ϕ$, with a crossover at $ϕ\sim T$ where Debye screening overtakes the Higgs mechanism---the Higgs vacuum ``melts". A number of confusions that exist in the literature regarding the B dependence of the free energy is clarified.

Electroweak Baryon Number Non-Conservation in the Early Universe and in High Energy Collisions

We review recent progress in the study of the anomalous baryon number non-conservation at high temperatures and in high energy collisions. Recent results on high temperature phase transitions are described, and applications to electroweak baryogenesis are considered. The current status of the problem of electroweak instanton-like processes at high energies is outlined. This paper is written on the occasion of Sakharov's 75th anniversary and will appear in the memorial volume of Uspekhi (Usp. Fiz. Nauk, volume 166, No 5, May 1996).

Note Added to ``Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe in the Standard Model"

Recent papers by Gavela et al. and Huet et al. claim to have shown that incluion of higher order interactions between quasiparticles dramatically decreases the baryon asymmetry of the universe which can arise in the Minimal Standard Model. These papers employ an inconsistent calculational scheme which, for instance, violates unitarity. We argue that their method cannot be considered as reliable, and thus their conclusions cannot be considered as justified.

Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe in the Standard Model

We study the interactions of quarks and antiquarks with the changing Higgs field during the electroweak phase transition, including quantum mechanical and some thermal effects, with the only source of CP violation being the known CKM phase. The magnitude and sign of the predicted BAU agrees with the observed value, with moderately optimistic assumptions about the dynamics of the phase transition. At present uncertainties related to the dynamics of the ew phase transition and the oversimplifications of our treatment are too great to decide whether or not this is the correct explanation for the presence of remnant matter in our universe, however the present work makes it clear that the minimal standard model cannot be discounted as a contender for explaining this phenomenon.

Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe in the Minimal Standard Model

We calculate the baryon asymmetry of the Universe which would arise during a first order electroweak phase transition due to minimal standard model processes. It agrees in sign and magnitude with the observed baryonic excess, for resonable KM parameters and m$_t$ in the expected range, and plausible values of bubble velocity and other high temperature effects. A detailed version of this work (77pp) is being simultaneously submitted to the net. A shortened version of this recently appeared in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 70}, 2833, 1993.

Parity breaking at high temperature and density

We investigate the question of parity breaking in three-dimensional Euclidean SU(2) gauge-Higgs theory by Monte Carlo simulations. We observe no sign of spontaneous parity breaking in the behaviour of both local and non-local gauge invariant operators. However, the presence of parity odd terms in the action can induce a phase transition to a parity odd ground state which is characterized by a Chern-Simons like condensate. The implications for various proposed scenarios of fermion number non-conservation is discussed.
