On the diffusion of hard sphere fluids in disordered porous media: New extended Enskog theory description

We proposed a new extended version of Enskog theory for the description of the self-diffusion coefficient of a colloidal hard-sphere fluid adsorbed in a matrix of disordered hard-sphere obstacles. In a considered approach instead of contact values of the fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix pair distribution functions, we introduced by input the new functions that include the dependence on the fraction of the volume free from matrix particles and from fluid particles trapped by matrix particles. It is shown that the introduction of this free volume fraction by the Fermi-like distribution leads to the best agreement between theoretical predictions and computer simulation results [Chang R., Jagannathan K., Yethiraj A., Phys. Rev. E, 2004, 69, 051101].

Dimerizing hard spherocylinders in porous media

This research focuses on the unique phase behavior of non-spherical patchy colloids in porous environments. Based on the theory of scaled particle (SPT), methods have been refined and applied to analyze the thermodynamic properties of non-spherical patchy particles in a disordered porous medium. Utilizing the associative theory of liquids in conjunction with SPT, we investigated the impact of associative interactions and connections between the functional nodes of particles on the formation of the nematic phase. Calculations of orientational and spatial distributions were conducted, which helped to understand the phase behavior of particles during the transition from isotropic to nematic phase under the spatial constraints imposed by the disordered matrix of the porous medium.

Effects of porous media on the phase behaviour of polypeptide solutions

The generalized van der Waals equation for anisotropic fluids in porous media, proposed by the authors in previous works, is used to describe the effect of porous media on the phase behavior of polypeptide solutions. By introducing the temperature dependence for the depth of the potential well and the geometric parameters of the spherocylinder, the main features of phase behavior of the polypeptide poly ($γ$-benzyl-$L$-glutamate) (PBLG) in a solution of dimethylformamide, including the existence of two nematic phases, is reproduced. It is shown that the presence of a porous medium shifts the phase diagram to the region of lower densities and lower temperatures.

Clustering effects on the diffusion of patchy colloids in disordered porous media

Enskog theory is extended for the description of the self-diffusion coefficient of patchy colloidal fluid in disordered porous media. The theory includes the contact values of fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix pair distribution functions that are modified to include the dependence from the so-called probe particle porosity, $ϕ$, in order to correctly describe the effects of trapping the fluid particles by a matrix. The proposed expressions for the modified contact values of fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix pair distribution functions include three terms. Namely, a hard sphere contribution obtained by us in the previous work [Holovko M. F., Korvatska M. Ya., Condens. Matter Phys., 2020, 23, 23605], the depletion contribution connected with the cluster-cluster and cluster-matrix repulsion and the intramolecular correlation inside the cluster. It is shown that the last term leads to a remarkable decrease of the self-diffusion coefficient at a low fluid density. With a decreasing matrix porosity, this effect becomes weaker. For intermediate fluid densities, the depletion contribution leads to an increase of the self-diffusion coefficient in comparison with the hard sphere fluid. For a sufficiently dense fluid, the self-diffusion coefficient strongly decreases due to a hard sphere effect. The influence of the cluster size and the type of clusters as well as of the parameters of porous media is investigated and discussed in detail.

Diffusion of hard sphere fluids in disordered porous media: Enskog theory description

We use the Enskog theory for the description of the self-diffusion coefficient of hard sphere fluids in disordered porous media. Using the scaled particle theory previously developed by us for the description of thermodynamic properties of hard sphere fluids, simple analytical expressions for the contact values of the fluid-fluid and fluid-matrix pair distribution functions are obtained and used as the input of Enskog theory. The expressions obtained for the contact values are described only by the geometric porosity and do not include the dependence on other types of porosity that are important for the description of thermodynamic properties. It is shown that the application of such contact values neglects the effects of trapping of fluid particles by a matrix and at least the probe particle porosity $ϕ$ should be included in the Enskog theory for a correct description of the matrix influence. In this paper we extend the Enskog theory by changing the contact values of the fluid-matrix and the fluid-fluid pair distribution functions with new properties which include the dependence not only on geometric porosity but also on probe particle porosity $ϕ$. It is shown that such semi-empirical improvement of the Enskog theory corresponds to SPT2b1 approximation for the description of thermodynamic properties and it predicts correct trends for the influence of porous media on the diffusion coefficient of a hard sphere fluid in disordered porous media. Good agreement with computer simulations is illustrated. The effects of fluid density, fluid to matrix sphere size ratio, matrix porosity and matrix morphology on the self-diffusion coefficient of hard sphere fluids are discussed.

On generalization of Van der Waals approach for isotropic-nematic fluid phase equilibria of anisotropic fluids in disordered porous medium

A generalized Van der Waals approach is developed for anisotropic fluids in disordered porous media. As the reference system a hard spherocylinder fluid in a disordered porous medium is considered and described in the framework of the scaled particle theory with the Carnahan-Starling and Parsons-Lee corrections. The attractive part of interaction is treated in the framework of the mean field approximation in which due to orientational dependence of the excluded volume of two spherocylinders, a coupling between attractive and repulsive contributions is found. We focus on spherocylinder fluids with sufficiently long particle lengths for which the nematic-nematic transition was established. It is shown that these two nematic phases have different densities and are characterized by different orientational ordering. Strong influence of the type of interparticle attraction on the phase behaviour of anisotropic fluids in disordered porous media is established. Three simple models for this purpose are considered, namely a model with the Lennard-Jones anisotropic attraction, a model with modified Lennard-Jones attraction and a model with anisotropic square-well potential. For all considered models, the phase diagram shifts to the region of lower densities and lower temperatures as the porosity decreases.

Cluster expansion for the description of condensed state: crystalline cell approach

A well-known cluster expansion, which leads to virial expansion for the free energy of low density systems, is modified in such a way that it becomes applicable to the description of condensed state of matter. To this end, the averaging of individual clusters over the states of an ideal gas is replaced by the averaging over the states of a non-correlated crystal using single-particle cell potentials. As a result, we arrive at the expansion of the partition function in correlations on the basis of single-particle functions corresponding to the multiplicative approximation. The cell potentials defining these functions are found from the condition of the minimum of the remainder in the constructed decomposition.

Scaled particle theory for a hard spherocylinder fluid in a disordered porous medium: Carnahan-Starling and Parsons-Lee corrections

The scaled particle theory (SPT) approximation is applied for the study of the influence of a porous medium on the isotropic-nematic transition in a hard spherocylinder fluid. Two new approaches are developed in order to improve the description in the case of small lengths of spherocylinders. In one of them, the so-called SPT-CS-PL approach, the Carnahan-Starling (CS) correction is introduced to improve the description of thermodynamic properties of the fluid, while the Parsons-Lee (PL) correction is introduced to improve the orientational ordering. The second approach, the so-called SPT-PL approach, is connected with generalization of the PL theory to anisotropic fluids in disordered porous media. The phase diagram is obtained from the bifurcation analysis of a nonlinear integral equation for the singlet distribution function and from the thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The results obtained are compared with computer simulation data. Both ways and both approaches considerably improve the description in the case of spherocylinder fluids with smaller spherocylinder lengths. We did not find any significant differences between the results of the two developed approaches. We found that the bifurcation analysis slightly overestimates and the thermodynamical analysis underestimates the predictions of the computer simulation data. A porous medium shifts the phase diagram to smaller densities of the fluid and does not change the type of the transition.

Vapor-liquid phase behavior of a size-asymmetric model of ionic fluids confined in a disordered matrix: the collective variables-based approach

We develop a theory based on the method of collective variables to study the vapor-liquid equilibrium of asymmetric ionic fluids confined in a disordered porous matrix. The approach allows us to formulate the perturbation theory using an extension of the scaled particle theory for a description of a reference system presented as a two-component hard-sphere fluid confined in a hard-sphere matrix. Treating an ionic fluid as a size- and charge-asymmetric primitive model (PM) we derive an explicit expression for the relevant chemical potential of a confined ionic system which takes into account the third-order correlations between ions. Using this expression, the phase diagrams for a size-asymmetric PM are calculated for different matrix porosities as well as for different sizes of matrix and fluid particles. It is observed that general trends of the coexistence curves with the matrix porosity are similar to those of simple fluids under disordered confinement, i.e., the coexistence region gets narrower with a decrease of porosity, and simultaneously the reduced critical temperature $T_{c}^{*}$ and the critical density $ρ_{i,c}^{*}$ become lower. At the same time, our results suggest that an increase in size asymmetry of oppositely charged ions considerably affects the vapor-liquid diagrams leading to a faster decrease of $T_{c}^{*}$ and $ρ_{i,c}^{*}$ and even to a disappearance of the phase transition, especially for the case of small matrix particles.

Isotropic-nematic transition in a mixture of hard spheres and hard spherocylinders: scaled particle theory description

The scaled particle theory is developed for the description of thermodynamical properties of a mixture of hard spheres and hard spherocylinders. Analytical expressions for free energy, pressure and chemical potentials are derived. From the minimization of free energy, a nonlinear integral equation for the orientational singlet distribution function is formulated. An isotropic-nematic phase transition in this mixture is investigated from the bifurcation analysis of this equation. It is shown that with an increase of concentration of hard spheres, the total packing fraction of a mixture on phase boundaries slightly increases. The obtained results are compared with computer simulations data.

Vapour-liquid phase diagram for an ionic fluid in a random porous medium

We study the vapour-liquid phase behaviour of an ionic fluid confined in a random porous matrix formed by uncharged hard sphere particles. The ionic fluid is modelled as an equimolar binary mixture of oppositely charged equisized hard spheres, the so-called restricted primitive model (RPM). Considering the matrix-fluid system as a partly-quenched model, we develop a theoretical approach which combines the method of collective variables with the extension of the scaled-particle theory (SPT) for a hard-sphere fluid confined in a disordered hard-sphere matrix. The approach allows us to formulate the perturbation theory using the SPT for the description of the thermodynamics of the reference system. The phase diagrams of the RPM in matrices of different porosities and for different size ratios of matrix and fluid particles are calculated in the random-phase approximation and also when the effects of higher-order correlations between ions are taken into account. Both approximations correctly reproduce the basic effects of porous media on the vapour-liquid phase diagram, i.e., with a decrease of porosity the critical point shifts toward lower fluid densities and lower temperatures and the coexistence region is getting narrower. For the fixed matrix porosity, both the critical temperature and the critical density increase with an increase of size of matrix particles and tend to the critical values of the bulk RPM.

What is liquid in random porous media: the Barker-Henderson perturbation theory

We apply the Barker-Henderson (BH) perturbation theory to the study of a Lennard-Jones fluid confined in a random porous matrix formed by hard sphere particles. In order to describe the reference system needed in this perturbation scheme, the extension of the scaled particle theory (SPT) is used. The recent progress in the development of SPT approach for a hard sphere fluid in a hard sphere matrix allows us to obtain very accurate results for thermodynamic properties in such a system. Hence, we combine the BH perturbation theory with the SPT approach to derive expressions for the chemical potential and the pressure of a confined fluid. Using the obtained expressions, the liquid-vapour phase diagrams of a LJ fluid in HS matrix are built from the phase equilibrium conditions. Therefore, the effect of matrix porosity and a size of matrix particles is considered. It is shown that a decrease of matrix porosity lowers both the critical temperature and the critical density, while the phase diagram becomes narrower. An increase of a size of matrix particles leads to an increase of the critical temperature. From the comparison it is observed that the results obtained from the theory are in agreement with computer simulations. The approach proposed in the present study can be extended to the case of anisotropic fluid particles in HS matrices.
