On coupled-channel dynamics in the presence of anomalous thresholds

We explore a general framework how to treat coupled-channel systems in the presence of overlapping left and right-hand cuts as well as anomalous thresholds. Such systems are studied in terms of a generalized potential, where we exploit the known analytic structure of t- and u-channel forces as the exchange masses get smaller approaching their physical values. Given an approximate generalized potential the coupled-channel reaction amplitudes are defined in terms of non-linear systems of integral equations. For large exchange masses, where there are no anomalous thresholds present, conventional $N/D$ methods are applicable to derive numerical solutions to the latter. At a formal level a generalization to the anomalous case is readily formulated by use of suitable contour integrations with amplitudes to be evaluated at complex energies. However, it is a considerable challenge to find numerical solutions to anomalous systems set up on a set of complex contours. By a suitable deformations of left-hand and right-hand cut lines we managed to establish a framework of linear integral equations defined for real energies. Explicit expressions are derived for the driving terms that hold for an arbitrary number of channels. Our approach is illustrated in terms of a schematic 3-channel systems. It is demonstrated that despite the presence of anomalous thresholds the scattering amplitude can be represented in terms of 3 phase shifts and 3 in-elasticity parameters, as one would expect from the coupled-channel unitarity condition.

Constraints from a large-N_c analysis on meson-baryon interactions at chiral order Q^3

We consider the chiral Lagrangian for baryon fields with J^P =\frac{1}{2}^+ or J^P =\frac{3}{2}^+ quantum numbers as constructed from QCD with up, down and strange quarks. The specific class of counter terms that are of chiral order Q^3 and contribute to meson-baryon interactions at the two-body level is constructed. Altogether we find 24 terms. In order to pave the way for realistic applications we establish a set of 22 sum rules for the low-energy constants as they are implied by QCD in the large-N_c limit. Given such a constraint there remain only 2 independent unknown parameters that need to be determined by either Lattice QCD simulations or directly from experimental cross section measurements. At subleading order we arrive at 5 parameters.

On the convergence of the chiral expansion for the baryon ground-state masses

We study the chiral expansion of the baryon octet and decuplet masses in the isospin limit. It is illustrated that a chiral expansion of the one-loop contributions is rapidly converging up to quark masses that generously encompasses the mass of the physical strange quark. We express the successive orders in terms of physical meson and baryon masses. In addition, owing to specific correlations amongst the chiral moments, we suggest a reordering of terms that make the convergence properties more manifest. Explicit expressions up to chiral order five are derived for all baryon masses at the one-loop level. The baryon masses obtained do not depend on the renormalization scale. Our scheme is tested against QCD lattice data, where the low-energy parameters are systematically correlated by large-Nc sum rules. A reproduction of the baryon masses from PACS-CS, LHPC, HSC, NPLQCD, QCDSF-UKQCD and ETMC is achieved for ensembles with pion and kaon masses smaller than 600 MeV. Predictions for baryon masses on ensembles from CLS as well as all low-energy constants that enter the baryon masses at N3LO are made.

Spectral representation for u- and t-channel exchange processes in a partial-wave decomposition

We study the analytic structure of partial-wave amplitudes derived from u- and t-channel exchange processes. The latter plays a crucial role in dispersion-theory approaches to coupled-channel systems that model final state interactions in QCD. A general spectral representation is established that is valid in the presence of anomalous thresholds, decaying particles or overlapping left-hand and right-hand cut structures as it occurs frequently in hadron physics. The results are exemplified at hand of ten specific processes.

On finite volume effects in the chiral extrapolation of baryon masses

We perform an analysis of the QCD lattice data on the baryon octet and decuplet masses based on the relativistic chiral Lagrangian. The baryon self energies are computed in a finite volume at next-to-next-to-next-to leading order (N$^3$LO), where the dependence on the physical meson and baryon masses is kept. The number of free parameters is reduced significantly down to 12 by relying on large-$N_c$ sum rules. Altogether we describe accurately more than 220 data points from six different lattice groups, BMW, PACS-CS, HSC, LHPC, QCDSF-UKQCD and NPLQCD. Values for all counter terms relevant at N$^3$LO are predicted. In particular we extract a pion-nucleon sigma term of 39$_{-1}^{+2}$ MeV and a strangeness sigma term of the nucleon of $σ_{sN} = 84^{+ 28}_{-\;4}$ MeV. The flavour SU(3) chiral limit of the baryon octet and decuplet masses is determined with $(802 \pm 4)$ MeV and $(1103 \pm 6)$ MeV. Detailed predictions for the baryon masses as currently evaluated by the ETM lattice QCD group are made.

Combined large-N_c and heavy-quark operator analysis for the chiral Lagrangian with charmed baryons

The chiral $SU(3)$ Lagrangian with charmed baryons of spin $J^P=1/2^+$ and $J^P=3/2^+$ is analyzed. We consider all counter terms that are relevant at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in a chiral extrapolation of the charmed baryon masses. At N$^2$LO we find 16 low-energy parameters. There are 3 mass parameters for the anti-triplet and the two sextet baryons, 6 parameters describing the meson-baryon vertices and 7 symmetry breaking parameters. The heavy-quark spin symmetry predicts four sum rules for the meson-baryon vertices and degenerate masses for the two baryon sextet fields. Here a large-$N_c$ operator analysis at NLO suggests the relevance of one further spin-symmetry breaking parameter. Going from N$^2$LO to N$^3$LO adds 17 chiral symmetry breaking parameters and 24 symmetry preserving parameters. For the leading symmetry conserving two-body counter terms involving two baryon fields and two Goldstone boson fields we find 36 terms. While the heavy-quark spin symmetry leads to $36-16=20$ sum rules, an expansion in $1/N_c$ at next-to-leading order (NLO) generates $36-7= 29$ parameter relations. A combined expansion leaves 3 unknown parameters only. For the symmetry breaking counter terms we find 17 terms, for which there are $17-9=8$ sum rules from the heavy-quark spin symmetry and $17-5=12 $ sum rules from a $1/N_c$ expansion at NLO.

Two-nucleon scattering: merging chiral effective field theory with dispersion relations

We consider two-nucleon scattering close to threshold. Partial-wave amplitudes are obtained by an analytic extrapolation of subthreshold reaction amplitudes calculated in a relativistic formulation of chiral perturbation theory. The constraints set by unitarity are used in order to stabilize the extrapolation. Neutron-proton phase shifts are analyzed up to laboratory energies $T_{\rm lab}\simeq250$ MeV based on the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order expression for the subthreshold amplitudes. We find a reasonably accurate description of the empirical S- and P-waves and a good convergence of our approach. These results support the assumption that the subthreshold nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude may be computed perturbatively by means of the chiral expansion. The intricate soft scales that govern the low-energy nucleon-nucleon scattering are generated dynamically via a controlled analytic continuation.

Photon-fusion reactions from the chiral Lagrangian with dynamical light vector mesons

We study the reactions $γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0$, $π^+π^-$, $K^0\bar{K}^0$, $K^+K^-$, $ηη$ and $π^0η$ based on a chiral Lagrangian with dynamical light vector mesons as formulated within the hadrogenesis conjecture. At present our chiral Lagrangian contains 5 unknown parameters that are relevant for the photon fusion reactions. They parameterize the strength of interaction terms involving two vector meson fields. These parameters are fitted to photon fusion data $γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0$, $π^+π^-, π^0η$ and to the decay $η\rightarrowπ^0γγ$. In order to derive gauge invariant reaction amplitudes in the resonance region constraints from micro-causality and exact coupled-channel unitarity are used. Our results are in good agreement with the existing experimental data from threshold up to about 0.9 GeV for the two-pion final states. The $a_0$ meson in the $π^0η$ channel is dynamically generated and an accurate reproduction of the $γγ\rightarrow π^0η$ data is achieved up to 1.2 GeV. Based on our parameter sets we predict the $γγ\rightarrow $ $K^0\bar{K}^0$, $K^+K^-$, $ηη$ cross sections.

Chiral extrapolations and strangeness in the baryon ground states

We review the quark-mass dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses as obtained from recent lattice simulations of the BMW, PACS-CS, LHPC, HSC and QCDSF-UKQCD groups. Our discussion relies on the relativistic chiral Lagrangian and large-$N_c$ sum rule estimates of the counter terms relevant for the baryon masses at N$^3$LO. A partial summation is implied by the use of physical baryon and meson masses in the one-loop contributions to the baryon self energies. In our analysis the physical masses are reproduced exactly by means of a suitable set of linear constraints. A quantitative and simultaneous description of all lattice results is achieved in terms of a six parameter fit, where the symmetry conserving counter term that are relevant at N$^3$LO are not yet being used. For pion masses larger than 300 MeV there appears to be an approximate linear pion-mass dependence of all octet and decuplet baryon masses. We discuss the pion- and strangeness sigma terms of the baryon octet states.

Electromagnetic transitions in an effective chiral Lagrangian with the eta-prime and light vector mesons

We consider the chiral Lagrangian with a nonet of Goldstone bosons and a nonet of light vector mesons. The mixing between the pseudoscalar mesons eta and eta-prime is taken into account. A novel counting scheme is suggested that is based on hadrogenesis, which conjectures a mass gap in the meson spectrum of QCD in the limit of a large number of colors. Such a mass gap would justify to consider the vector mesons and the eta-prime meson as light degrees of freedom. The complete leading order Lagrangian is constructed and discussed. As a first application it is tested against electromagnetic transitions of light vector mesons to pseudoscalar mesons. Our parameters are determined by the experimental data on photon decays of the omega, phi and eta-prime meson. In terms of such parameters we predict the corresponding decays into virtual photons with either dielectrons or dimuons in the final state.

Strangeness in the baryon ground states

We compute the strangeness content of the baryon octet and decuplet states based on an analysis of recent lattice simulations of the BMW, PACS, LHPC and HSC groups for the pion-mass dependence of the baryon masses. Our results rely on the relativistic chiral Lagrangian and large-$N_c$ sum rule estimates of the counter terms relevant for the baryon masses at N$^3$LO. A partial summation is implied by the use of physical baryon and meson masses in the one-loop contributions to the baryon self energies. A simultaneous description of the lattice results of the BMW, LHPC, PACS and HSC groups is achieved. From a global fit we determine the axial coupling constants $F\simeq 0.45$ and $D \simeq 0.80 $ in agreement with their values extracted from semi-leptonic decays of the baryons. Moreover, various flavor symmetric limits of baron octet and decuplet masses as obtained by the QCDSF-UKQCD group are recovered. We predict the pion- and strangeness sigma terms and the pion-mass dependence of the octet and decuplet ground states at different strange quark masses.

On the consistency of recent QCD lattice data of the baryon ground-state masses

In our recent analysis of lattice data of the BMW, LHPC and PACS-CS groups we determined a parameter set of the chiral Lagrangian that allows a simultaneous description of the baryon octet and decuplet masses as measured by those lattice groups. The results on the baryon spectrum of the HSC group were recovered accurately without their inclusion into our 6 parameter fit. We show that the same parameter set provides an accurate reproduction of the recent results of the QCDSF-UKQCD group probing the baryon masses at quite different quark masses. This shows a remarkable consistency amongst the different lattice simulations. With even more accurate lattice data in the near future it will become feasible to determine all low-energy parameters relevant at N$^3$LO.

Chiral dynamics with vector fields: an application to $ππ$ and $πK$ scattering

A theoretical study of Goldstone boson scattering based on the chiral Lagrangian with vector meson fields is presented. In application of a recently developed novel approach we extrapolate subthreshold partial-wave amplitudes into the physical region. The constraints set by micro-causality and coupled-channel unitarity are kept rigourously. It is shown that already the leading order subthreshold amplitudes lead to s- and p-wave $ππ$ and $πK$ phase shifts are in agreement with the experimental data up to about 1.2 GeV.

On the quark-mass dependence of the baryon ground-state masses

We perform a chiral extrapolation of the baryon octet and decuplet masses in a relativistic formulation of chiral perturbation theory. A partial summation is assumed as implied by the use of physical baryon and meson masses in the one-loop diagrams. Upon a chiral expansion, our results are consistent with strict chiral perturbation theory at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. All counter terms are correlated by a large-$N_c$ operator analysis. Our results are confronted with recent results of unquenched three-flavor lattice simulations. We adjust the parameter set to the pion-mass dependence of the nucleon and omega masses as computed by the BMW Collaboration and predict the pion-mass dependence of the remaining baryon octet and decuplet states. The current lattice simulations can be described accurately and smoothly up to pion masses of about 600 MeV. In particular, we recover the recent results of HSC without any further adjustments.

On the possibility of a discontinuous quark-mass dependence of baryon octet and decuplet masses

We compute the quark-mass dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses within the $χ$-MS scheme at the one-loop level. The results are confronted with recent lattice QCD simulations of the MILC collaboration. A fair reproduction of the quark-mass dependence as suggested by the lattice simulations is obtained up to pion masses of about 700 MeV. Based on the chiral one-loop results we predict that the dependence of the baryon octet and decuplet masses on the quark-masses is discontinuous. Typically the pion-mass dependence is smooth up to about 300 MeV only. This is a consequence of self consistency imposed on the partial summation, i.e. the masses used in the loop functions are identical to those obtained from the baryon self energies. The 'mysterious' quark-mass dependence of the Xi mass predicted by the MILC collaboration is recovered in terms of a discontinuous chiral extrapolation.

On kinematical constraints in boson-boson systems

We consider the scattering of two-bosons with negative parity and spin 0 or 1. Starting from helicity partial-wave scattering amplitudes we derive transformations that eliminate all kinematical constraints. Such amplitudes are expected to satisfy partial-wave dispersion relations and therefore provide a suitable basis for data analysis and the construction of effective field theories. Our derivation relies on a decomposition of the various scattering amplitudes into suitable sets of invariant functions. A novel algebra was developed that permits the efficient computation of such functions in terms of computer algebra codes.
