Thomas-Fermi approximation to pairing in finite Fermi systems. The weak coupling regime

We present a new semiclassical theory for describing pairing in finite Fermi systems. It is based on taking the $\hbar \to 0$, i.e. Thomas-Fermi, limit of the gap equation written in the basis of the mean field (weak coupling). In addition to the position dependence of the Fermi momentum, the size dependence of the pairing force is also taken into account in this theory. Along isotopic chains the Thomas-Fermi gaps average the well known arch structure shown by the quantal gaps. This structure can be almost recovered in our formalism if some shell fluctuations are included in the level density. We point out that at the drip line nuclear pairing is strongly reduced. This fact is illustrated with the behavior of the gap in the inner crust of neutron stars.

Semi-Classical Description of the Average Pairing Properties in Nuclei

We present a new semi-classical theory for describing pairing in finite Fermi systems. It is based in taking the $\hbar \to 0$, i.e. Thomas-Fermi, limit of the gap equation written in the basis of the mean field (weak coupling). In addition to the position dependence of the Fermi momentum, the size dependence of the matrix elements of the pairing force is also taken into account in this theory. An example typical for the nuclear situation shows the improvement of this new approach over the standard Local Density Approximation. We also show that if in this approach some shell fluctuations are introduced in the level density, the arch structure displayed by the quantal gaps along isotopic chains is almost recovered. We also point out that in heavy drip line nuclei pairing is strongly reduced.

Semiclassical evaluation of average nuclear one and two body matrix elements

Thomas-Fermi theory is developed to evaluate nuclear matrix elements averaged on the energy shell, on the basis of independent particle Hamiltonians. One- and two-body matrix elements are compared with the quantal results and it is demonstrated that the semiclassical matrix elements, as function of energy, well pass through the average of the scattered quantum values. For the one-body matrix elements it is shown how the Thomas-Fermi approach can be projected on good parity and also on good angular momentum. For the two-body case the pairing matrix elements are considered explicitly.

Generic Finite Size Enhancement of Pairing in Mesoscopic Fermi Systems

The finite size dependent enhancement of pairing in mesoscopic Fermi systems is studied under the assumption that the BCS approach is valid and that the two body force is size independent. Different systems are investigated such as superconducting metallic grains and films as well atomic nuclei. It is shown that the finite size enhancement of pairing in these systems is in part due to the presence of a surface which accounts quite well for the data of nuclei and explains a good fraction of the enhancement in Al grains.

Surface behaviour of the pairing gap in a slab of nuclear matter

The surface behaviour of the pairing gap previously studied for semi-infinite nuclear matter is analyzed in the slab geometry. The gap-shape function is calculated in two cases: (a) pairing with the Gogny force in a hard-wall potential and (b) pairing with the separable Paris interaction in a Saxon-Woods mean-field potential. It is shown that the surface features are preserved in the case of slab geometry, being almost independent of the width of the slab. It is also demonstrated that the surface enhancement is strengthened as the absolute value of chemical potential $|μ|$ decreases which simulates the approach to the nucleon drip line.

Moment of inertia of a trapped superfluid gas of Fermions

The moment of inertia Q of a trapped superfluid gas of atomic Fermions (6Li) is calculated as a function of the temperature. At zero temperature the moment of inertia takes on the irrotational flow value. Only for T very close to Tc rigid rotation is attained. It is proposed that future measurements of the rotational energy will unambiguously reveal whether the system is in a superfluid state or not.

Moment of inertia of a trapped superfluid gas of atomic Fermions

The moment of inertia of a trapped superfluid gas of atomic Fermions (6Li) is calculated as a function of two system parameters: temperature and deformation of the trap. For moderate deformations at zero temperature the moment of inertia takes on the irrotational flow value. Only for T very close to the critical temperature rigid rotation is attained. For very strong trap deformations the moment of inertia approaches its rigid body value even in the superfluid state. It is proposed that future measurements of the rotational energy will unambiguously reveal whether the system is in a superfluid state or not.
