Spatially resolved imaging spectroscopy of T Tauri

The small separation of the individual stellar components in the TTau system has prevented spectroscopy of the individual components in the near-infrared (NIR) in the past. We present NIR data (H- and K-band) on this object taken using the ALFA adaptive optics (AO) system in combination with the 3D integral field spectrograph. Except for the Brackett series seen in emission, the NIR spectra of \tts{} appear featureless, suggesting that warm dust dominates the radiation. No ro-vibrational lines of molecular hydrogen were found in close vicinity to the stars. The Brackett line emission from \ttn{} and S could not be resolved with the 3.5-m-telescope, implying that it arises within 6 AU from the stars. The line ratios between Br$γ$ (2.166 \mum{}) and Br10 (1.736 \mum{}) toward \ttn{} and \tts{} are similar, suggesting similar selective extinctions towards the respective emitting regions. Our results are consistent with a model that describes \tts{} as a pre-main sequence star surrounded by a small edge-on disk, leaving the polar regions relatively unobscured. We present numerical simulations which support this model.

Optical and radio variability of the BL Lac object AO 0235+16: a possible 5-6 year periodicity

New optical and radio data on the BL Lacertae object AO 0235+16 have been collected in the last four years by a wide international collaboration, which confirm the intense activity of this source. The optical data also include the results of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) first-light campaign organized in November 1997. The optical spectrum is observed to basically steepen when the source gets fainter. We have investigated the existence of typical variability time scales and of possible correlations between the optical and radio emissions by means of visual inspection, Discrete Correlation Function analysis, and Discrete Fourier Transform technique. The major radio outbursts are found to repeat quasi-regularly with a periodicity of about 5.7 years; this period is also in agreement with the occurrence of some of the major optical outbursts, but not all of them.

Infrared Observation of Hot Cores

We report on mid-infrared imaging of hot cores performed with SpectroCam-10 and TIMMI2. The observations aimed at the detection of thermal emission presumably associated with the hot cores. Mid-infrared flux measurements are required to improve the luminosity and optical depth estimates for these sources. Results are presented for W3(H$_2$O), G9.62+0.19, G10.47+0.03, and the possible hot core candidate G232.620+0.996. They illustrate that the morphology of these sources cannot be described by simple geometries. Therefore, line-of-sight effects and considerable extinction even at mid-infrared wavelengths must not be neglected.

The Impact of Adaptive Optics on Star Formation Research

In this paper, we discuss the benefits of ground-based, adaptive optics (AO) aided observations for star formation research. After outlining the general advantages, we present results obtained during the ALFA science demonstration programme in 1999. These results underline the absolute necessity of AO assistance for almost any kind of observations regarding star formation regions.
