Nodal Protectorate: A Unified Theory of the ab-plane and c-axis Penetration Depths of Underdoped cuprates

We formulate a model describing the doping ($x$) and temperature ($T$) dependence of the $ab$-plane and c-axis penetration depth of a cuprate superconductor. The model incorporates the suppression of the superfluid density with underdoping as the system approaches the Mott-Hubbard insulating state by augmenting a d-wave BCS model with a phenomenological charge renormalization factor that is vanishingly small for states away from the nodes of the d-wave pair potential but close to unity in the vicinity of the nodes. The c-axis penetration depth is captured within a model of incoherent electron tunneling between the CuO$_2$ planes. Application of this model to the recent experimental data on the high-purity single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ implies existence of a ``nodal protectorate'', a $k$-space region in the vicinity of the nodes whose size decreases in proportion to $x$, in which d-wave quasiparticles remain sharp even as the system teeters on the brink of becoming an insulator. The superfluid density, which is extremely small for these samples, also appears to come exclusively from these protected nodal regions.

Survival of the d-wave superconducting state near the edge of antiferromagnetism in the cuprate phase diagram

In the cuprate superconductor $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$, hole doping in the $CuO_2$ layers is controlled by both oxygen content and the degree of oxygen-ordering. At the composition $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.35}$, the ordering can occur at room temperature, thereby tuning the hole doping so that the superconducting critical temperature gradually rises from zero to 20 K. Here we exploit this to study the c-axis penetration depth as a function of temperature and doping. The temperature dependence shows the d-wave superconductor surviving to very low doping, with no sign of another ordered phase interfering with the nodal quasiparticles. The only apparent doping dependence is a smooth decline of superfluid density as Tc decreases.

Theory of the quasiparticle interference patterns in the pseudogap phase of the cuprate superconductors

A method is proposed to test for the nature of the pseudogap phase in cuprates using the recently developed technique of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We show that the observed quasiparticle interference patterns depend critically on the quasiparticle coherence factors, making it possible to distinguish between the pseudogap dominated by superconducting fluctuations and by various particle-hole condensates.

Gauge invariant response functions in Algebraic Fermi liquids

A new method is developed that permits the simple evaluation of two-loop response functions for fermions coupled to a gauge field. We employ this method to study the gauge-invariant response functions in the Algebraic Fermi liquid, a non-Fermi liquid state proposed to describe the pseudogap phase in the QED3 theory of cuprate superconductors. The staggered spin susceptibility is found to exhibit a characteristic anomalous dimension exponent η_4, while other correlators show behavior consistent with the conservation laws imposed by the symmetries of the underlying theory.

Coexistence of bulk antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity in the QED3 theory of copper oxides

Within the framework of the QED3 theory of cuprates it is argued that bulk antiferromagnetic (AF) order can coexist with d-wave superconductivity in the underdoped region, in agreement with recent experiments. The AF order arises from the phase fluctuating d-wave superconductor via the mechanism of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, provided that fluctuations are sufficiently strong. The phase diagram for this coexistence is mapped out by means of analytical and numerical solutions of the underlying Dyson-Schwinger equation in the large N limit.

QED3 theory of pairing pseudogap in cuprates: From d-wave superconductor to antiferromagnet via "algebraic" Fermi liquid

High-$T_c$ cuprates differ from conventional superconductors in three crucial aspects: the superconducting state descends from a strongly correlated Mott-Hubbard insulator, the order parameter exhibits d-wave symmetry and superconducting fluctuations play an all important role. We formulate a theory of the pseudogap state in the cuprates by taking the advantage of these unusual features. The effective low energy theory within the pseudogap phase is shown to be equivalent to the (anisotropic) quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) space-time dimensions (QED$_3$). The role of Dirac fermions is played by the nodal BdG quasiparticles while the massless gauge field arises through unbinding of quantum vortex-antivortex degrees of freedom. A detailed derivation of this QED$_3$ theory is given and some of its main physical consequences are inferred for the pseudogap state. We focus on the properties of symmetric QED$_3$ and propose that inside the pairing protectorate it assumes the role reminiscent of that played by the Fermi liquid theory in conventional metals.

Magnetic field induced charge and spin instabilities in cuprate superconductors

A d-wave superconductor, subject to strong phase fluctuations, is known to suffer an antiferromagnetic instability closely related to the chiral symmetry breaking in (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED3). On the basis of this idea we formulate a "QED3 in a box" theory of local instabilities of a d-wave superconductor in the vicinity of a single pinned vortex undergoing quantum fluctuations around its equilibrium position. As a generic outcome we find an incommensurate 2D spin density wave forming in the neighborhood of a vortex with a concomitant "checkerboard" pattern in the local electronic density of states, in agreement with recent neutron scattering and tunneling spectroscopy measurements.

Gauge invariant fermion propagator in QED3

In a recent preprint [cond-mat/0204040] Khveshchenko questioned the validity of our computation of the gauge invariant fermion propagator in QED3, which we employed as an effective theory of high-T_c cuprate superconductors [cond-mat/0203333]. We take this opportunity to further clarify our procedure and to show that criticism voiced in the above preprint is unwarranted.

Relativity Restored: Dirac Anisotropy in QED$_3$

We show that at long lengthscales and low energies and to leading order in 1/N expansion, the anisotropic QED in 2+1 dimensions renormalizes to an isotropic limit. Consequently, the (Euclidean) relativistic invariance of the theory is spontaneously restored at the isotropic critical point, characterized by the anomalous dimension exponent of the Dirac fermion propagator $η$. We find $η=16/3π^2 N$.

Algebraic Fermi liquid from phase fluctuations: "topological" fermions, vortex "berryons" and QED3 theory of cuprate superconductors

Within the phase fluctuation model for the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors we identify a novel statistical "Berry phase" interaction between the nodal quasiparticles and fluctuating vortices. The effective action describing this model assumes the form of an anisotropic Euclidean quantum electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions (QED_3) and naturally generates the marginal Fermi liquid behavior for its fermionic excitations. The doping axis in the x-T phase diagram emerges as a quantum critical line which regulates low energy fermiology. We examine the merits of our theory in light of available experiments.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Phase Fluctuations in Cuprate Superconductors: A QED$_3$ Unified Theory of the Pseudogap State

A d-wave superconductor, its phase coherence progressively destroyed by unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs, suffers an instability related to chiral symmetry breaking in two-flavor QED$_3$. The chiral manifold exhibits large degeneracy spanned by physical states acting as inherent ``competitors'' of d-wave superconductivity. Two of these states are associated with antiferromagnetic insulator and ``stripe'' phases, known to be stable in the pseudogap regime of cuprates near half-filling. The theory also predicts additional, yet unobserved state: a d+ip phase-incoherent superconductor.

Universal thermal conductivity in the vortex state of cuprate superconductors

We formulate an effective low energy theory for the fermionic excitations in d-wave superconductors in the presence of periodic vortex lattices. These can be modeled by an effective free Dirac Hamiltonian with renormalized velocities and possibly a small mass term. In the presence of random nonmagnetic impurities this will result in universal (i.e. field and disorder strength independent) thermal and spin conductivities with values different from those occurring in the Meissner state.

Quasiparticles and Vortices in Unconventional Superconductors

Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of strongly type-II superconductors are investigated by means of a singular gauge transformation applied to the tight binding lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. We present a detailed derivation of the gauge invariant effective low energy Hamiltonian for the quasiparticle-vortex system and show how the physics of the "Doppler shift" and "Berry phase" can be incorporated at the Hamiltonian level by working in the singular gauge. In particular, we show that the "Berry phase" effect manifests itself in the effective Hamiltonian through a half-flux Aharonov-Bohm scattering of quasiparticles off vortices and stress the important role that this effect plays in the quasiparticle dynamics. Full numerical solutions in the regime of intermediate fields H_c1<<B<<H_c2 are presented for model superconductors with s-, p- and d-wave symmetries and with square and triangular vortex lattices. For s- and p-wave cases we obtain low energy bound states in the core, in agreement with the existing results. For d-wave case only extended quasiparticle states exist. We investigate in detail the nature of these extended states and provide comparison to the previous results within linearized ``Dirac fermion'' model. We also investigate internodal interference effects when vortex and ionic lattices have high degree of commensurability and discuss various specific choices for the singular gauge transformation.

Flux tubes, visons, and vortices in spin-charge separated superconductors

The idea of spin-charge separation in cuprate superconductors has been recently energized by Senthil and Fisher who formulated a Z_2 gauge theory and, within its context, proposed a ``vison detection'' experiment as a test for topological order in a sample with multiply connected geometry. Here we show that the same experiment can be performed to test for the spin-charge separation in U(1) [but not in SU(2)] theory and argue that vortex core spectroscopy can in fact distinguish between the different symmetries of the fictitious gauge field.

Vortex state in a doped Mott insulator

We analyze the recent vortex core spectroscopy experiments in cuprate superconductor and discuss what can be learned from them about the nature of the ground state in these compounds. We argue that the data are inconsistent with the assumption of a simple metallic ground state and exhibit characteristics of a doped Mott insulator. A theory for a vortex core in such a doped Mott insulator is developed based on the U(1) gauge field slave boson model and is shown to exhibit properties qualitatively consistent with the experimental data.

Effective "Penetration Depth" in the Vortex State of a d-wave Superconductor

The temperature and field dependence of the effective magnetic penetration depth in the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor, as measured by muon spin rotation experiments, is calculated using a nonlocal London model. We show that at temperatures below T^* \propto \sqrt{B}, the linear T-dependence of the effective penetration depth crosses over to a T^3-dependence. This could provide an explanation for the low temperature flattening of the effective penetration depth curves observed in a recent muon spin rotation experiment.

Heavy quark mass expansion and intrinsic charm in light hadrons

We review the technique of heavy quark mass expansion of various operators made of heavy quark fields using a semiclassical approximation. It corresponds to an operator product expansion in the form of series in the inverse heavy quark mass. This technique applied recently to the axial current is used to estimate the charm content of the η, η' mesons and the intrinsic charm contribution to the proton spin. The derivation of heavy quark mass expansion for Qbar γ_5 Q is given here in detail and the expansions of the scalar, vector and tensor current and of a contribution to the energy-momentum tensor are presented as well. The obtained results are used to estimate the intrinsic charm contribution to various observables.

Quasiparticles in the vortex lattice of unconventional superconductors: Bloch waves or Landau levels?

A novel singular gauge transformation is developed for quasiparticles in the mixed state of a strongly type-II superconductor which permits a full solution of the problem at low and intermediate fields. For a periodic vortex lattice the natural low-energy quasiparticle states are Bloch waves rather than Landau levels discussed in the recent literature. The new representation elucidates the physics considerably and provides fresh insights into the spectral properties of such systems.
